In the present work, a prototype was developed to observe the flow behavior of viscous fluids (10^3 to 10^5 Pa.s) under free surface shear. The geometry of the prototype is an eccentric Couette cell where both cylinders can rotate in the same or opposite directions. Transparent windows permit in-situ observations during flow. The design, development and testing of the prototype with a viscous model fluid are reported in this paper. In order to obtain information on contact lines and free surfaces under shear, the flow behaviour of a small fluid volume was investigated in co-and counter-rotating conditions. The different flow conditions and information that can be obtained are described. A particular attention is paid to determine steady state flow conditions.

International audience; The prediction of the morphology of ternary polymer blends requires a good knowledge of the values of the three interfacial tensions. We selected three polymers, either biobased or biodegradable, PA, PBAT and PLA and we accurately measured their interfacial tensions using the retraction method, varying the molar mass or inverting the phases. The following values of interfacial tensions were obtained: = 3.3±0.7mN/m, = 5.6±0.3mN/m and = 3.0±0.4 mN/m. These values were used to calculate the spreading coefficients giving rise to two negative coefficients and one coefficient close to zero. Ternary blends with various compositions, two different levels of viscosity for the PBAT, different processing conditions were prepared. There was a very good agreement between the predictions of the spreading theory, when using the values of interfacial tensions in the right order of magnitude, and the observed morphologies, whatever the polymer serving as a matrix. When the PLA or PBAT was chosen as the matrix, the ternary blend morphology was composed of composite droplets, presenting a partial wetting morphology, dispersed in the polymer matrix. This morphology was observed whatever the composition, the viscosity level of the PBAT phase and the processing conditions. A further calculation of the free energy confirmed this 2 morphology. The formation process of this semi-encapsulated morphology was observed during blending.

International audience; Même si de nombreux travaux ont été dédiés à l'étude de la dispersion d'argiles dans des matrices polymères, la dispersion à l'échelle nanométrique d'une argile organomodifiée dans une matrice apolaire même en présence d'un compatibilisant reste un challenge. Nous nous intéressons depuis une quinzaine d'années à la dispersion d'argiles organomodifiées dans une matrice polypropylène (PP). Comme mis en évidence par d'autres auteurs, l'énergie mécanique spécifique (EMS) apparaît être un paramètre clé pour décrire l'état de dispersion. Ainsi, l'état de dispersion est amélioré en augmentant l'EMS. Néanmoins au-delà d'une valeur critique (fonction du système, du procédé, du profil de vis), l'état de dispersion à l'échelle nanométrique ne semble plus pouvoir être amélioré. L'objectif de ce travail était d'étudier l'impact de l'énergie fournie au nanocomposite sur l'état de dispersion. Les nanocomposites ont été préparés par voie directe en extrusion bi-vis. L'EMS apportée au système a été variée en jouant sur la vitesse de rotation des vis et sur la viscosité de la matrice. L'état de dispersion du nanocomposite a été déterminé pour chaque condition en sortie de filière, mais aussi le long du profil de vis. L'état de dispersion a été caractérisé à différentes échelles : par microscopie électronique à balayage pour déterminer la quantité d'agrégats non dispersés, la diffraction des rayons X pour voir si les chaînes polymères sont bien intercalées entre les feuillets d'argile, la microscopie électronique en transmission pour visualiser localement si les feuillets sont bien exfoliés. Ces observations à l'échelle nanométrique ont été complétées par une caractérisation rhéologique des échantillons. Nous verrons que la rhéologie est une technique particulièrement utile pour suivre l'état de dispersion en particulier à l'échelle nanométrique. Le logiciel Ludovic© a été utilisé pour analyser les conditions d'extrusion et déterminer l'évolution des paramètres d'extrusion le long du profil de vis. Cette nouvelle étude a confirmé la relation entre l'état de dispersion et l'EMS. Mais cette relation est valable dans une gamme limitée d'EMS et aussi de température matière. Ainsi une dégradation thermomécanique des chaînes liée à des conditions d'extrusion trop sévères n'est pas favorable à la dispersion. La température matière apparaît comme un paramètre clé. Une température trop élevée peut conduire à une dégradation du tensio-actif présent dans l'argile ou une dégradation du compatibilisant, les deux ayant un effet négatif sur la dispersion. Nous verrons dans un dernier temps comment la connaissance de la relation entre l'état de dispersion à l'échelle nanométrique et l'EMS, et des limites de ces relations peut aider la simulation à déterminer des conditions optimales d'extrusion sur un nouveau profil de vis.

International audience; Polymer crystallization can be considered at different levels: nucleation, growth and overall kinetics. Because these levels are, in turn, materials dependent, the present work intends to evaluate how size and volume fraction of expanded graphite particles can affect the three crystallization levels in an isotactic polypropylene in quiescent and isothermal conditions.Neat polypropylene (PP) was Moplen HP400R (LyondellBasell). The selected expanded graphite particles were KNG-180, KNG-150 [1] and KNG-G5 [2] (Knano®). Composites with three volume fractions of graphite varying from 0.3 to 2 % were prepared in the same conditions in an internal mixer. The dispersion state of the particles in the composites was characterized at different scales using SEM and TEM. Crystallization was studied by optical microscopy, DSC and X-ray diffraction.Expanded graphite particles were found to have a flake shape with a micrometric size. At a given volume fraction, graphite particles enhanced the kinetics of crystallization of PP especially in the presence of KNG-150, KNG-G5 and KNG-180, acting as nucleating agents [3]. The crystal nucleation of PP was found to be located on the surface of the micrometric graphite particles giving rise to transcrystalline growths in the microcomposites [4]; but related to the difference in stacking dimension of graphite particles. International audience; Ethylene-propylene-diene-monomer rubber (EPDM) has been widely studied in the recent years. Thanks to its high resistance to ageing and mechanical properties, it is one of the best candidates for the automotive industry. For a better understanding of its mechanical properties, a suitable characterization of its thermomechanical behavior is mandatory. For this purpose, the combination of infrared thermography and strain field measurement is commonly used in literature [1]. Over the last decade, image correlation approach has been widely improved. It now allows precisely estimating the volume change during the deformation [2]. However, to the authors’ knowledge, no study was already devoted to the combined analysis of both thermal and volume change. This approach should be useful to identify the respective contributions of the reversible and irreversible mechanisms associated with the deformation of elastomers.

National audience; Le renforcement des polymères est très souvent réalisé par des nanocharges en raison de leursgrandes surfaces de contact, jouant un rôle particulier sur leurs comportements. Parfois de formesanalogues à celles de fibres, ces charges jouent un rôle important dans les propriétés thermiques,mécaniques, optiques ou barrières et permettent de renforcer un matériau à l’aide d’une faibleconcentration de matière.Cette étude s’intéresse à la dispersion de nanofibres de sépiolite, une argile naturelle, dans unematrice polymère. L’utilisation de cette argile minérale est très répandue dans le domaine despolymères [1] du fait de sa forme aciculaire, de son faible coût ainsi que de son abondance. Viadifférents procédés et traitements, nous allons voir qu’il est possible de modifier les mécanismes dedispersion de cette charge au sein d’une matrice polymère et donc de modifier les propriétés finalesdes composites synthétisés. Les résultats obtenus à partir de deux méthodes de dispersion serontcomparés: (i) l’ultraturrax qui permet l’obtention de microdispersions et (ii) la sonification quipermet l’obtention de nanodispersions. La morphologie des mélanges et la qualité de la dispersiondes charges ont été caractérisées par microscopie électronique à balayage (MEB). Les interactionsentre les fibres et la matrice ont été suivis au cours du temps par rhéométrie (suivi des modulesviscoélastiques, et donc de la reconstruction du réseau minéral, après un pré-cisaillement). International audience; The present work proposes an approach to identify the network structural evolution of EPDM rubbers induced by loading. An experimental device based on two camera pair systems has been developed in order to accurately measure the volume change of rubber samples during stretching. Results show that the loading is associated with an increase of volume change (∆V/V0) up to 2% and should be related to cavitation/decohesion at the interface between fillers and the rubbery matrix. Post mortem analysis of the microstructure, combining swelling and thermoporosimetry experiments, were then carried out. A good agreement has been found between the volume change and the microstructural evolution: as compared to virgin samples (not submitted to loading), the effective network density estimated from swelling measurements of tested materials (ν) is decreased of 7% and thermoporosimetry shows that damage during stretching is accompanied by an average increase of the chains length. These changes are significantly increased for samples stretched up to the rupture (λ=8). Indeed, in that case, the effective network density is decreased of more than 20%.

The improvement of its mechanical properties should be based on a good understanding of the microstructural changes induced by loading. The damage mechanisms, i.e. cavitation / decohesion, are usually studied in the literature by in-situ SAXS [1] or volume changes [2]. However, to the authors’ knowledge, no study was devoted to microstructural characterization allowing taking into account the heterogeneity of the rubber network. Thus, the present work proposes an approach to identify the network structural evolution of EPDM rubbers induced by loading combining volume measurements, swelling and thermoporosimetry.

International audience; nylon 6/clay nanocomposites have been prepared in the Toyota laboratories [1], and proved to show great mechanical properties such as stiffness and impact resistance for only 4 wt% of clay addition in the matrix [2], the use of organoclay has widely increased. Polymer/organoclay nanocomposites can be prepared via different methods but melt-mixing has proven to be the most effective, and also the most adaptable at an industrial scale. The impact of the melt processing conditions on the dispersion state of the clay in a polypropylene matrix has been recently investigated [3], showing the wide range of processing parameters that can impact the microstructure and the properties of the nanocomposites.This study looks at the preparation of organoclay-based nanocomposites by melt mixing with polypropylene (PP) in a twin-screw extruder. We are interested in the influence of extrusion parameters (screw speed and barrel temperature) on the state of dispersion of the organoclay. The influence of the PP viscosity is also investigated. A polypropylene grafted with maleic anhydride (PP-g-MA) was used as compatibilizing agent. The nanocomposites formulation was: 85 wt% PP / 10 wt% PP-g-MA / 5wt% organoclay. Dead-stop experiments have been performed, allowing to collect samples all along the screws. The samples were analyzed through scanning electron microscopy, X-Ray diffraction and rheology in small amplitude oscillatory shear. These different techniques allow us to characterize the dispersion state of the organoclay at different scales. The results show that screw speed has a strong impact on the clay exfoliation but is limited by matrix degradation. This degradation is hardly reduced when decreasing barrel temperature and is enhanced with a more viscous matrix. It also appears that intercalation and exfoliation develop early along the screw profile. International audience; Polypropylene-organoclay based nanocomposites were prepared via twin-screw extrusion. The effect of different processing parameters on the dispersion state was investigated. Complementary techniques were used to characterize nanocomposites microstructures. Scanning electron microscopy allows to quantify the remaining agglomerates, whereas X-Ray diffraction focusses on the intercalation of the clay platelets by the polymer chains. Rheological measurements in small amplitude oscillatory shear helps to characterize the nanodispersion of the organoclay. Dead-stop experiments were performed to follow the dispersion state along the screw profile. The results show that the screw speed plays a major role on the exfoliation, but a compromise has to be found between an efficient dispersion and the matrix thermal degradation. It also appears that both micro-and nanodispersion happens early along the screw profile, and that, in some conditions, the microstructure is established largely before the screw end.

International audience; Abstract:The fragmentation behaviour of different agglomerated fillers (carbon black pellets and amorphous precipitated silica micropearls) in a common polymer matrix (styrene-co-butadiene rubber) was investigated by in-situ observations under shear. This was done thanks to a transparent counter-rotating shear cell coupled with optical microscopy. Different elementary mechanisms of dispersion were evidenced and characterized. Criteria for dispersion and erosion kinetics were determined.Carbon black pellets and silica micropearls showed different elementary mechanisms for dispersion. A relationship between the criterion for fragmentation and the internal organisation of the agglomerate could be established.These in-situ observations allow us to study the first steps of dispersion down to the micron size. They show that an efficient mechanism of dispersion (rupture or disintegration) is first necessary to reduce the agglomerate size during a mixing operation. However this mechanism is limited down to a certain size. Erosion then becomes the dominant mechanism to decrease the fragment size.

International audience; Summary :Reaching nanoscale dispersion of the layered silicate within polypropylene (PP) matrix is challenging and requires both the use of a compatibilizer and optimal processing method. We showed in a previous work that the specific mechanical energy received during extrusion was the key parameter controlling this microstructure with a saturation of the dispersion state above a certain level of energy [1-2].The present study aims at better understanding the effect of the specific mechanical energy on the dispersion process. Nanocomposites of polypropylene, maleated polypropylene and organomodified montmorillonite were prepared in a co-rotating twin-screw extruder by direct mixing. The effect of the specific mechanical energy was investigated by varying extrusion parameters such as the screw speed, the barrel temperature and changing the matrix viscosity level. A particular attention was paid to high screw speed conditions. Dead stop experiments were conducted and the nanocomposite structure was followed along the screw profile. The structure was systematically quantified via scanning and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and dynamic rheometry in to order to analyse the structure at different scales.A clear relationship is once again shown between the specific mechanical energy given to the system and the organoclay dispersion state with a saturation above a certain screw speed. This saturation was shown to be related to the thermo-mechanical degradation of polymer chains. The effect of the polymer chain degradation on dispersion will be discussed.References:[1] T. National audience; Les nanocomposites à matrice thermoplastique ont connu un large engouement depuis les travaux de Toyota sur les matériaux argile lamellaire/polyamide [1]. Ils ont montré que la dispersion de l’argile à l’échelle du feuillet permet, avec de très faibles fractions massiques (quelques %), d’améliorer les propriétés mécaniques, barrière aux gaz et résistance au feu du matériau. Néanmoins, les travaux ultérieurs dans une matrice apolaire (polypropylène) ont montré que la mauvaise affinité de l’argile avec la matrice rendent sa dispersion difficile [2-3]. Ceci reste vrai même si l’affinité charge/matrice est améliorée en jouant sur le tensio-actif utilisé pour rendre l’argile organophile et en ajoutant un agent compatibilisant (PP greffé anhydride maléique). Dans ce cas, l’état de dispersion de la charge doit être caractérisé à différentes échelles : celle du micron pour voir les agglomérats mal dispersés (microscopie électronique à balayage) et celle du nanomètre pour voir l’état d’exfoliation de la charge (microscopie électronique en transmission, mais surtout la rhéologie). Différents travaux ont montré la relation entre le comportement rhéologique du nanocomposite en dynamique (mesures dans le domaine de viscoélasticité linéaire) et l’état d’exfoliation de la charge [4].L’état de dispersion de l’argile peut être amélioré en jouant sur les conditions d’extrusion des nanocomposites. Nous avons montré dans un premier travail que l’énergie mécanique spécifique peut être utilisée pour représenter l’effet des paramètres procédé (vitesse de rotation des vis, débit, température du fourreau) sur l’état de dispersion de la charge [5,6]. Dans ce précédent travail, les nanocomposites avaient été préparés par dilution d’un mélange maître. Les résultats concernaient l’étape de dilution.Dans le présent travail, les nanocomposites ont été préparés à l’état fondu par voie directe en extrusion bi-vis. Nous nous sommes intéressés à l’effet de la vitesse de rotation sur l’état de dispersion de la charge, mais aussi à l’évolution de l’état de dispersion le long de la vis (via des essais interrompus). L’état de dispersion de la charge a été, dans tous les cas, caractérisé à différente échelles en couplant différentes techniques. Nos travaux montrent une relation entre l’état de dispersion et la vitesse de rotation des vis. Toutefois, les fortes vitesses entraînent une dégradation de la matrice. Son effet sur la dispersion sera discuté.

International audience; We developed a transparent counter-rotating shear cell coupled with an optical microscope. The counter-rotating geometry allows us to stabilize the particle in suspension in a liquid matrix submitted to a shear flow relatively to the laboratory framework. It is then possible to observe the behaviour of this particle under the effect of hydrodynamics stresses. If the particle is an agglomerated object and if the hydrodynamics stresses are larger than its cohesion strength, fragmentation takes place. We thus applied this technique to study the fragmentation process of agglomerated fillers such as carbon black and silica suspended in a styrene-butadiene rubber. Different fragmentation processes were observed and characterized. Quantities such as the minimum shear stress to be applied to reduce the size of the agglomerated filler are determined.The comparison of different grades of carbon black and precipitated micropearl silica allows us to better understand the mechanism of fragmentation of such agglomerated fillers. Conditions for fragmentation could be related to the agglomerate internal organisation. The experimental procedure, the validity of the measured data and the models used to interpret the data will be discussed.

National audience; L'objectif du travail est de reproduire la morphologie d'un polystyrène choc (inclusions coeur-peau dans une matrice PS) dans le cas d'une matrice polylactide (PLA) pour améliorer ses propriétés chocs. La présente communication concerne la stratégie mise en place pour atteindre la morphologie cible à savoir des sous-inclusions d'une 1 ère phase de l'ordre du micron encapsulée dans une 2 ème phase formant des inclusions elles-mêmes dispersées dans une matrice PLA. L'obtention d'une telle morphologie implique d'être capable de maîtriser la localisation exacte de chaque phase mais aussi de contrôler la taille des inclusions et des sous-inclusions. La position relative des phases les unes par rapport aux autres est pilotée par la thermodynamique du système et donc par les tensions interfaciales entre les composants [1,2]. La taille relative des inclusions est contrôlée dans un mélange immiscible binaire par la fraction volumique, le nombre Capillaire et le rapport de viscosités des deux phases. Nous montrerons au cours de cette communication les modèles utilisés pour prédire la morphologie et la stratégie mise en place pour l'obtenir. Différentes compositions ont été testées en variant la fraction d’argile organomodifiée pour un taux fixe PP-g-MA/OMMT (taux fixé à 0 ou 4). L’ensemble des mélanges a été préparé en mélangeur interne avec les mêmes conditions de mélange. La structure multi-échelle de ces matériaux a été analysée en combinant différentes techniques : MEB, MET, diffraction de rayons X et rhéométrie en mode oscillatoire dans le régime de viscoélasticité linéaire.L’ajout de compatibilisant dans les mélanges permet de passer d’une structure type microcomposite caractérisée par la présence d’agglomérats d’argile à une structure type nanocomposite, partiellement intercalée et exfoliée. Au-delà d’un seuil de percolation, le nanocomposite présente un comportement type pseudo-solide qui se traduit par la présence d’un plateau sur G’ dans la zone terminale et d’une contrainte seuil sur la courbe de viscosité.Dans ce travail, nous nous sommes intéressés au caractère fractal du réseau de charges du nanocomposite. La contrainte seuil apparente et la déformation critique ont été utilisées pour remonter à la dimension fractale du réseau de charges. Cette structure de réseau confère au nanocomposite un caractère thixotrope que nous avons plus particulièrement étudié. L’application d’un cisaillement continu conduit à une rupture partielle du réseau et à un alignement des charges en écoulement qui explique la non-validité de la règle de Cox-Merz. Différentes sollicitations dans le domaine linéaire et non-linéaire ont été appliquées pour mesurer et comprendre la cinétique de formation ou reformation du réseau fractal après arrêt d’un écoulement. Ces mesures montrent une réorganisation du réseau de charges sur des temps très longs.Les recherches menant aux présents résultats ont bénéficié d'un soutien financier du septième programme-cadre de la Communauté européenne en vertu de la convention de subvention n° NMP3-LA-2008-213436.

National audience; Dans un fluide Newtonien, l’orientation d’une fibre est parfaitement décrire par l’équation de Jeffery. Dans cette étude,on utilise un rhéomètre numérique pour étudier l’évolution d’une fibre dans un champ de cisaillement simple pour des fluidesviscoélastiques Oldroyd-B. Pour les fluides viscoélastiques, la période de rotation augmente avec le temps de relaxation (le nombrede Weissenberg) tandis que la fibre s’oriente le long de l’axe de vorticité. Par conséquence pour les fluides viscoélastiquesl’équation Jeffery ne peux plus être utilisée pour prédire l’orientation d’une fibre.

International audience; This work aims at achieving direct core-shell morphology in ternary PLA/PBAT/PA polymer blends by melt mixing. The final goal is to improve the toughness of polylactic acid (PLA). The morphology of multi-phase polymer blends is controlled by the thermodynamics of the system. The morphology of ternary blends can be predicted from the relative values of the three spreading coefficients characterising the triplet of polymers. Spreading coefficients are calculated from the values of interfacial tensions between binary components. The determination of interfacial tensions between a PLA, a poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) and a copolyamide (PA) predicts a complex dispersed morphology in the PLA matrix where PA subinclusions are partly encapsulated in the PBAT phase. This morphology was obtained by melt mixing the three components, as observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In a second step, selective compatibilization was used to modify the PA subinclusion location. To this end, a PBAT-b-PLA di-block copolymer was synthesized. The presence of the di-block copolymer enables us to modify the interfacial tension between PLA and PBAT. The modification of the interfacial tension balance was shown to successfully change the morphology from semi-encapsulation to full encapsulation of PA sub-inclusions in the PBAT drops.

International audience; The objective of this work is to mimic the morphology of high impact polystyrene (core-shell inclusions in PS) in the case of a PLA matrix in order to reinforce its impact strength. The present communication focusses on the strategy developed to obtain the targeted morphology, i.e. to have micron size subinclusions embedded in a second phase itself embedded into a PLA matrix. The challenge is to drive the right polymer at its right location and to be able to control the sub-inclusion and inclusion sizes.The spatial relative location of the phases in the blend is controlled by the thermodynamics of the system and thus by the interfacial tension between the components [1-2]. The relative size of the inclusions is controlled in binary blends by volume fraction, Capillary number and viscosity ratio.This communication will describe how to theoretically predict a pre-defined morphology by playing with these different parameters and how to obtain it.

International audience; The development of highly dispersible silica micropearls by Rhodia led to the introduction of silica as a reinforcing filler in Green tyres in 1992 by Michelin. However new environmental constraints imply to further improve the silica dispersion process.The objective of the present work was to investigate the role of silica intrinsic parameters on its dispersibility in order to determine key parameters to improve the silica dispersion. The behaviour of different silica grades was thus investigated: two classical silica micropearl grades for tyre applications different in their specific area (silica Z1165MP with a high specific area and silica Z1115MP with a lower specific area), the same grades chemically modified with a covering agent (silane), and pilot grades (same specific area, same aggregate structure as Z1165MP) synthesized by Rhodia where the physico-chemistry of the silica surface was modified during the silica process. The dispersion behaviour was characterized in model conditions: in air (impact on wall) and under shear in a SBR matrix (rheo-optical device).The direct observation of dispersion mechanism in a SBR matrix under shear showed that the Z1115MP dispersed via an efficient mechanism of disintegration with the sudden breakage of the micropearl into micron size fragments above a low critical stress whereas the Z1165MP ruptured into a few large fragments at a higher stress. The post-chemical modification of the silica surface using silane had no effect on the silica dispersion compared to raw materials. However the modification of the physico-chemistry of the silica surface during the silica process implied changes in the internal organisation of the micropearl and allowed to modify the dispersion mechanism.This work was performed in the framework of DURAMAT project, programme of AXELERA for innovative, durable and environmental friendly materials.
