Abstract

We advocate the Loop-of-stencil-reduce pattern as a means of simplifying the implementation of data-parallel programs on heterogeneous multi-core platforms. Loop-of-stencil-reduce is general enough to subsume map, reduce, map-reduce, stencil, stencil-reduce, and, crucially, their usage in a loop in both data-parallel and streaming applications, or a combination of both. The pattern makes it possible to deploy a single stencil computation kernel on different GPUs. We discuss the implementation of Loop-of-stencil-reduce in FastFlow, a framework for the implementation of applications based on the parallel patterns. Experiments are presented to illustrate the use of Loop-of-stencil-reduce in developing data-parallel kernels running on heterogeneous systems.

7. Temporal pattern of the altitudinal limit of beech forest in the Northern Apennines. A photogrammetric analysis

Abstract

The temporal pattern of the High Reggio Emilia Apennine upper timberline during the second half of the 19th century has been studied at landscape level in the Prado-Cusna area since 1954. This part of the Northern Apennines is of outstanding biological value. Orthorectified aerial photographs (flights GAI 1954, RER 1978, IT 2000) were used to generate maps using an object-based method of classification. In the period studied the timberline was relatively stable despite the decline of local historical human impact based on agriculture and pastoralism on high mountain vegetation and the mean temperature in the northern Apennines has increased by about 1.3�C. Problems linked to the photogrammetric data processing of aerial photographs of the past and to the classification of images are briefly discussed.

Abstract

Le Flore sono opere che presentano il catalogo delle specie di un territorio, commentate criticamente e accompagnate da altre informazioni quali il luogo (o località) del ritrovamento. Le Flore da un lato sono fortemente influenzate nella genesi e nel contenuto dal contesto storico-geografico-scientifico-culturale in cui vengono realizzate (e lo riflettono) e, dall’altro lato, rappresentano anche un momento di arrivo (oltre che di partenza) dello stato delle conoscenze del territorio a cui si riferiscono. La Flora della Provincia di Bologna di Girolamo Cocconi (1883) è una delle prime Flore locali dell’Italia post-unitaria, espressamente indirizzata agli studenti e a quanti avessero voluto accrescere le proprie cognizioni di botanica. La genesi di questa Flora è legata all’opera ai botanici Antonio e Giuseppe Bertoloni, che, dal 1816 al 1878, oltre ad avere fortemente improntato il panorama scientifico bolognese (e non solo), hanno esplorato a più riprese il territorio provinciale. La maggior parte dei dati contenuti nella Flora è stata però raccolta in un ristretto arco temporale, quindi essa fornisce una sorta di istantanea dello scenario floristico dell’epoca. I dati contenuti nella Flora sono ora parte della Banca-Dati della Flora della Regione Emilia-Romagna (7767 record) e le località (659) sono state georeferenziate. Ciò consente una rilettura in chiave contemporanea di questo prezioso volume e nuove possibilità di analisi. In questo contributo presentiamo i dati relativi all’alta valle del Reno e del Dardagna che costituiscono un importante segmento non solo in termini numerici (un terzo circa) del territorio descritto nella Flora, di grande attrazione per i botanici bolognesi, ma anche toscani.

I castagneti da frutto di antico impianto e con alberi secolari sono un habitat raro (e fragile) nel paesaggio appenninico e di elevato pregio perché, oltre ad avere valenze storico-culturali e paesaggistiche, supportano una elevata biodiversità e costituiscono un rifugio per specie rare o in declino. La gestione degli alberi monumentali e del sottobosco ha un ruolo chiave per il mantenimento o recupero dell’habitat e la salvaguardia della biodiversità ad esso connessa. Contestualmente, va riconosciuto il contributo insostituibile dato dai castanicoltori nella tutela dell’habitat.

Abstract

I castagneti di antico impianto sono un habitat di importanza conservazionistica a livello europeo. In Appennino ci sono esempi di tali castagneti che ospitano alberi secolari. Questi ultimi, non solo testimoniano la lunga storia dell'impianto e la sua complessa relazione con l'uomo, ma possono costituire un rifugio per specie epifite rare o in declino. Nelle provincie di Bologna e Modena, attraverso informatori chiave e lo snow ball sampling sono stati individuati 20 castagneti (13 gestiti) con prevalenza di alberi secolari. Nei siti sono stati valutati la condizione degli alberi (incluso lo stato fitosanitario), la biodiversità vegetale e l’abbondanza di licheni target. I risultati evidenziano il ruolo centrale della gestione tradizionale nel preservare l'habitat e la biodiversità.

Abstract

The threat to the survival of many species, caused by emerging ecological crises, has favored the development of a new environmental awareness. In recent decades, especially in the most industrialized nations, an increasing participation of citizens in the collection of scientific data has also been recorded. The active involvement of society in different aspects of science has been defined by the sociologist Alan Irwin as “Citizen Science”. Although environmental Citizen Science brings together the largest number of projects, the fields of application of this new way of doing science are innumerable. BioBlitz is one of the best-known examples of citizen science activities, aimed at monitoring the biodiversity of an area. The Maremma Natural History Museum, as part of its activities, regularly organizes BioBlitz on an annual basis, starting from 2013. During BioBlitz 2017 in the SPZ and SCZ “Monte Labbro and Alta Valle dellAlbegna” data were collected attesting the presence of 403 different taxonomic entities, of which 367 identified at the species level and 5 at the subspecies level. Six alien and 2 endemic species were identified. In terms of environmental legislation, 38 protected species and 7 endangered species were detected in the area. The most relevant aspect that emerges from the collected data is the consistent number of protected species. This confirms the environmental value of the area and the need for management and conservation plans for the entire site.

Abstract

In recent decades, many natural history museums in Europe have integrated their traditional functions with new ways of interacting with visitors and local communities. In particular, the need to adapt their mission according to the changes in modern society has led them to develop initiatives aiming at an active involvement of the public in scientific research. This is one of the inspiring principles of Citizen Science. BioBlitz are among the most popular activities dedicated to biodiversity in this field. In line with the inspiring principles of this cultural revolution, since 2012 the Maremma Natural History Museum organized public participation initiatives for the collection of biodiversity data. We hereby report the main results of the BioBlitz 2018 organized by the Maremma Natural History Museum in the Talamone area, located in the southern portion of the Uccellina Hills. Four hundred and ninety eight taxa were sampled and identified, 447 of which at the level of species and 10 at the level of subspecies; the remaining refer to higher taxonomic levels. 31 protected species and 10 endangered species were found in the area; moreover, 6 alien species and one endemic species were detected. The main feature that distinguished BioBlitz 2018 to others conducted in previous years was the large number of participants. The data collected increased the scientific knowledge of the southern portion of the Maremma Regional Park, less known than other areas of the same protected area.

Abstract

In 2019 the 4th Report ex-Art. 17 on the conservation status (CS) of Annex I Habitats of the 92/43/EEC Directive was expected by every EU/28 country, with reference to the period 2013-18. In Italy, the process was in charge to the Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA), on behalf of the Ministry for Environment, Land and Sea Protection (MATTM), with the scientific support of the Italian Botanical Society (SBI). A large group of thematic and territorial experts elaborated the available data concerning the 124 types of terrestrial and inland water Habitats present in Italy, 39 of which are represented by Forest Habitats (Group 9),. The main aim of the work was the evaluation of the overall CS of each Habitat by Biogeographic Region (Mediterranean, Continental and Alpine), for a total amount of 294 assessments. A high proportion of these (92, corresponding to 31% of the total) referred to Forest Habitats, including 20 marginal types for which the CS was not requested. The analysis was carried out at different scales: a) administrative territory, through the data contained in the ISPRA database, whose compilation was in charge to the Regions and Autonomous Provinces; b) Natura 2000 site, with the latest updates available (Standard Data Forms updated to 2018); c) national scale, implementing the distribution maps for each Habitat based on the European grid ETRS89-LAEA5210 (10x10 km2 mesh); d) Biogeographic Region, scale of the final assessment. Cartographic outcomes, associated databases and additional data used for the assessments will be available online on the ISPRA Portal as soon as the validation process by the European Commission will be completed. A dedicated archive named "HAB_IT" has been created in the national database "VegItaly" (1), managed by the Italian Society of Vegetation Science, where the phytosociological relevés representative of the various Annex I Habitats in Italy will be archived and freely accessible. An overview of the results regarding the Forest habitats is here provided, including a comparison with the outcomes of the former reporting cycle, the 3rd Report ex-Art. 17 (2). In several cases (e.g. 9120, 91L0), the distribution maps have been remarkably improved due to better knowledge and more fitful interpretation. The conservation status resulted as Favourable (FV) for 6,7%, Inadequate (U1) for 58,7% and Bad (U1) for 32,0% of the 72 assessed forest Habitat types. In no case there was an improvement of the conservation status, while in 6 cases a worsening of the conditions resulted from the data analysis, pointing out the Habitats types with a higher need of action. Similarly to other projects carried out as a team by the network of Annex I Habitat experts of the Italian Botanical Society and the Italian Society for Vegetation Science (e.g. 3, 4), this is another step in the direction of supporting the implementation of the 92/43/EEC "Habitat" Directive in Italy and Europe. On this ground, the high biodiversity of the Italian forest Habitats could be emphasized, however results pointed out that some rare or endemic types (e.g. Alnus cordata or Betula aetnensis-dominated forests) are still scarcely acknowledged by the most prominent EU conservation tools such as the Annex I to the "Habitat" Directive. 1) F. Abstract

Si valutano le potenzialità di un campione di litografie, omogeneo per ambito temporale ed incisore, quale mezzo per la descrizione di paesaggi storici e base-line per l'analisi dei cambiamenti della copertura del suolo. La fonte delle immagini è l'opera in quattro volumi de "Le Chiese parrocchiali della diocesi di Bologna ritratte e descritte" di metà dell'Ottocento. Ciascuna litografia deriva da disegni en plein air eseguiti da un medesimo autore, suggerendo una sorta di standardizzazione nella modalità di rappresentazione. Presentiamo il processo di selezione delle immagini utilizzando come parametri principali una buona rappresentazione paesaggistica e la presenza di strutture utili alla georeferenziazione. In ciascuna immagine sono stati identificati i tipi di uso del suolo, le peculiarità geomorfologiche e gli edifici (intesi come punti di controllo a terra). Il processo di selezione ha portato all'individuazione di casi ricchi di punti di controllo a terra che consentirà di eseguire una ripresa fotografica dal presumibile punto di osservazione originale.

Abstract

Detection should enable containment of viral foodborne infections., Because secondary transmission masks the connection between sources and outbreaks, estimating the proportion of foodborne norovirus infections is difficult. We studied whether norovirus genotype frequency distributions (genotype profiles) can enhance detection of the sources of foodborne outbreaks. Control measures differ substantially; therefore, differentiating this transmission mode from person-borne or food handler–borne outbreaks is of public health interest. Comparison of bivalve mollusks collected during monitoring (n = 295) and outbreak surveillance strains (n = 2,858) showed 2 distinguishable genotype profiles in 1) human feces and 2) source-contaminated food and bivalve mollusks; genotypes I.2 and I.4 were more frequently detected in foodborne outbreaks. Overall, ≈21% of all outbreaks were foodborne; further analysis showed that 25% of the outbreaks reported as food handler–associated were probably caused by source contamination of the food.

Abstract

The lack of prospective, randomized, controlled trial data to guide optimal antibiotic use in bacteraemic critically ill patients has led to a wide variety of strategies and major issues with drug resistance. We therefore prospectively investigated the epidemiology of bacteraemia and fungaemia in intensive care units (ICUs); and the impact of timing, type and appropriateness of antibiotic intervention.We conducted a multinational, multicentre, prospective observational study in 132 ICUs from 26 countries with no interventions.1702 patients [European (69.6%), Australasian (12.2%), South American (8.3%) and Asian (9.9%)] developed 1942 bacteraemic episodes over the study period. Mortality rates were similar for those receiving empirical (40.5%), semi-targeted (37.6%) or fully targeted (33.3%) antibiotic therapy (P=0.40), and in those initially receiving broad- (39.3%) or restricted-spectrum (39.1%) therapy (P=0.94). First-line therapy was effective in terms of the antibiogram (where available) in 70.4% of cases. This in vitro susceptibility ranged from 76.3% for broad-spectrum antibiotics to 46.3% for restricted-spectrum antibiotics (P0.0001). However, no antibiotic policy-associated variable, including in vitro susceptibility (odds ratio 0.89, 95% confidence interval 0.61-1.30), was a statistically significant predictor of mortality.We could not show an impact of antibiotics on mortality in critically ill patients, despite in vitro activity and early commencement. Randomized, multicentre trials are urgently needed to establish the appropriate duration, timing and combinations of antibiotics that will both optimally treat infection and minimize development of resistance and other complications.

Abstract

Il presente lavoro ha inteso quantificare il consumo di suolo naturale e agricolo ed esaminarne gli effetti sulla permeabilità ambientale, calcolata attraverso la valutazione della variazione dei valori di “frizione ambientale” considerando specificatamente i grandi erbivori (ungulati). La metodologia illustrata in Rizzo et al. (2014) ed estesa qui a gran parte del Nord Italia permette di stimare lo sforzo necessario ad una specie animale per attraversare una data tipologia di uso suolo. Tutte le analisi sono state effettuate per il periodo 1950-2006 utilizzando gli uso suoli provinciali e delle zone rete natura 2000 SIC e ZPS di 5 regioni del Nord Italia: Valle d'Aosta, Piemonte, Liguria, Lombardia e Friuli Venezia Giulia, utilizzando il software GIS open source QGIS 2.10 e ArcGIS 10.2. I dati evidenziano a livello provinciale un generalizzato peggioramento della permeabilità ambientale mentre in molte aree protette SIC e ZPS si ha avuto un miglioramento della permeabilità ambientale.

Abstract

We advocate the Loop-of-stencil-reduce pattern as a means of simplifying the implementation of data-parallel programs on heterogeneous multi-core platforms. Loop-of-stencil-reduce is general enough to subsume map, reduce, map-reduce, stencil, stencil-reduce, and, crucially, their usage in a loop in both data-parallel and streaming applications, or a combination of both. The pattern makes it possible to deploy a single stencil computation kernel on different GPUs. We discuss the implementation of Loop-of-stencil-reduce in FASTFLOW, a framework for the implementation of applications based on the parallel patterns. Experiments are presented to illustrate the use of Loop-of-stencil-reduce in developing data-parallel kernels running on heterogeneous systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
