Summary Objective: Prospective study on the evolution of the radiology budget during medicalisation of an Emergency Department. Patients and methods: Evaluation of radiological investigations was performed during three differents periods: house physicians alone (P1), house physicians alone but specially trained in emergency medecine (P2), and house physicians trained with a senior physician present 24 hours a day. The analysis of the radiology budget was done using the usual tariff laws. Results: The periods were of thirty days each, and were comparable in terms of recruitment and quality of the medical care. A diminution of 40% of the radiologic investigation was found out between P1 and P3. A detailed analysis was realized. It showed that specific formation and presence of a senior had not the same effect on the variation of the different types of radiological investigations. The budget analysis showed a 40.5% decrease in radiological costs. Conclusions: Specific teaching of Emergency medecine and presence of a senior trained in that kind of practice allow optimisation of medical care in Emergency Department and reduction of Health Systems Costs by diminution of unusefol investigations.

A large scale prototype of a liquid argon accordion calorimeter, conceived as a sector of a full LHC Barrel detector and consisting of an electromagnetic and a hadronic section, has been constructed and tested at the CERN SPS with electron and pion beams in the energy range 10-287 GeV. The energy resolution measured for electrons is 10%/square-root E[GeV] with a local constant of 0.2%. Preliminary results on the hadronic section, which for this first exposure had only half of its transverse coverage, look encouraging and show that the calorimeter behaves according to the design figures.

The performance of the ALEPH detector at the LEP e+e-collider is reviewed. The accuracy of the tracking detectors to measure the impact parameter and momentum of charged tracks is specified. Calorimeters are used to measure photons and neutral hadrons, and the accuracy obtained in energy and angle is given. An essential property of the detector is its ability to identify particles; the performance in identification of electrons, muons, neutrinos (from missing energy), charged hadrons, Ï0's and V0's is described. © 1995.

Summary form only given. A research and development program is being conducted in view of realizing an electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeter for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The authors report on tests on fast electronics, coupled to an electromagnetic prototype calorimeter built with an accordion structure. Three different types of preamplifiers have been used. In two (Si and GaAs hybrids), the preamplifier is operated in liquid argon. In the third one, a common based (Si JFET or GaAs) transistor is in the liquid, the charge preamplifier being outside the cryostat, after about 6 m of 50- Omega cable. The shaping amplifier uses RC-CR filtering. The response to a short current pulse peaks after about 20 ns. When the system is connected to the calorimeter, the liquid argon signals peak, as expected, after 30 ns. Noise, linearity, and cross-talk between channels were investigated. First results from an exposure of the calorimeter to electrons of energy 30 to 175 GeV were obtained. >

The helium isotopes composition of fluids trapped in hydrothermal Sulfides from the East Pacific Rise (13 °N) were measured. Two extraction techniques, i.e., crushing and heating, were tested and sulfldes of different mineralogical types were studied. The comparison between the two extraction methods suggests that both should give similar results, provided the crushing efficiency is sufficiently high. Sulfides 3 He/ 4 He ratio for crushed samples are in the range 6.85–8.10 times the atmospheric ratio (R a = 1.38 × 10 −6 ) and the measured helium concentration is of the order of 5.5 × 10 −5 cm 3 STP per gram of trapped fluid. Comparison with the helium isotope composition of the hydrothermal vent fluids themselves shows that the mineral phases formed at the highest temperature (i.e., with less dilution by the ambient seawater) retain the helium information most effectively, with values almost indistinguishable from the endmember vent fluid.

The SARA facility at Grenoble provides the possibility to carry out neutron irradiation studies at both cryogenic and room temperatures, and permits at the same time to measure on-line the deterioration of the electronic performance of the tested circuits. The cryogenic vessel consists of a 101 liquid argon cryostat placed behind the neutron source. A TOF technique was used to measure the neutron energy spectrum produced by the collision of a 20 MeV deuteron beam on a thick Be target. Alanine and thermoluminescent dosimeters were used to determine the neutron and photon doses. The results show that the neutron and the gamma dose components are about 78% and 22%, respectively. The angular distribution of the dose was also measured.

A prototype lead-liquid-argon electromagnetic calorimeter with parallel plates and Accordion geometry has been equipped with high speed readout electronics and tested with electron and muon beams at the CERN SPS. For a response peaking time of about 35 ns, fast enough for operation at the future hadron colliders, the energy resolution for electrons is 9.6%/√E[GeV] with a local constant term of 0.3% and a noise contribution of 0.33 E[ GeV ] . The spatial accuracy achieved with a detector granularity of 2.7 cm is 3.7 mm E[ GeV ] and the angular resolution 12 mrad at 60 GeV.

A novel geometry liquid argon calorimeter with accordion-shaped electrodes and converter plates has been recently conceived. Such a design allows for a fast readout and for a high granularity over large volumes with minimal dead spaces, properties which are considered essential for operation at the future hadron colliders. The first electromagnetic prototype based on this scheme has been built and tested at the CERN SPS. For a response peaking time of 140 ns an energy resolution of 10%/√ E (GeV) and a space resolution of 4.4 mm/√ E (GeV) with 2.7 cm cell size were achieved for electrons. A few preliminary results from a test with fast readout (response peaking time of less than 40 ns) are also presented.

Transition radiation from a radiator of 650 lithium foils has been studied in a MWPC filled with a xenon-Co 2 mixture for two experimental configurations. With the chamber immediately behind the radiator, particle discriminations comparable to those reported in the literature (90% efficiency for electrons, 10% for hadrons) have been observed. With magnetic bending between the radiator and the xenon chamber typical efficiencies of 87% for electrons and less than 0.4% for hadrons have been measured. The discrimination obtained is at least a factor 20 better than for the more conventional configuration. In the latter case, synchrotron radiation has also been observed.

The migration of non-biodegradable and non volatile pollutants in soils and sub-soils is the result of the competition between solution and particulate transport and retention by insolubilization (adsorption, precipitation). Various models, taking into account convection, dispersion and,to a lesser extent,solid-liquid interactions, have been developed in order to predict the transfer of pollutants in the pedosphere and the lithosphere. In the investigations coupling flow and solid-liquid interactions, the latter are usually accounted for by empirical expressions (partition coefficient Kd). Such an approach cannot consider the significant role played by the various dissolved chemical forms that an element can present. The dissolved concentration of an element and consequently its interactions with soils are strongly dependent upon the water chemical parameters (pH, Eh, major anions and cations, complexing agents).

The histodysplasias are congenital genetic diseases affecting various tissues in the body (nervous tissue, the epidermis, connective tissue, etc.). They are caused by a genetic deterioration of the phase of differentiation of the layers between the fourth and eighth weeks of embryonic development (Robert,41)! Brown (7) in Marfan’s Syndrome, Antani (2) and Brandt (6) in Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, and Etches (14) in neurofibromatosis all found mitral valve prolapse in each of the principle dysplasias. Other researchers have discovered the same condition: Roberts (42) in pseudoxanthoma elasticum, Jean-Louis (23) in hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia, and Melaned (36) in Lobstein’s Syndrome. Mitral valve prolapse has also been found in chromosomal diseases such as Turner’s (Hancock,22) and Down’s (Goldhaber, 21) syndromes or in extra-chromosomal formations such as Noonan’s disease (Towne, 49), resulting in the formation of histodysplasias.

- Abstract
Antibiotics have been used as a prophylaxis for dermatologic procedures. We will review the various procedures that specific antibiotics with dosages are used for, depending on the procedure, diagnosis, and circumstance of the patient. We will examine the current and updated guidelines used in dermatologic surgery and the overlapping guidelines across other fields. Physicians must consider the side effects of antibiotics and the resistance that may occur as a result before using the class or level of prophylaxis. Initial evaluation for alcohol, chlorhexidine, or iodine should be measured as well. Updated guidelines aim to address the contraindications of antibiotics, yet further research is needed to avoid antibiotic resistance and to explore alternative methods of antibiotic application, such as intranasal and intravenous., (© 2022 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)
