BACKGROUND: Populations of the plant pathogenic fungus Verticillium dahliae display a complex and rich genetic diversity, yet the existence of sexual reproduction in the fungus remains contested. As pivotal genes, MAT genes play a crucial role in regulating cell differentiation, morphological development, and mating of compatible cells. However, the functions of the two mating type genes in V. dahliae, VdMAT1-1-1, and VdMAT1-2-1, remain poorly understood. RESULTS: In this study, we confirmed that the MAT loci in V. dahliae are highly conserved, including both VdMAT1-1-1 and VdMAT1-2-1 which share high collinearity. The conserved core transcription factor encoded by the two MAT loci may facilitate the regulation of pheromone precursor and pheromone receptor genes by directly binding to their promoter regions. Additionally, peptide activity assays demonstrated that the signal peptide of the pheromone VdPpg1 possessed secretory activity, while VdPpg2, lacked a predicted signal peptide. Chemotactic growth assays revealed that V. dahliae senses and grows towards the pheromones FO-a and FO-α of Fusarium oxysporum, as well as towards VdPpg2 of V. dahliae, but not in response to VdPpg1. The findings herein also revealed that VdMAT1-1-1 and VdMAT1-2-1 regulate vegetative growth, carbon source utilization, and resistance to stressors in V. dahliae, while negatively regulating virulence. CONCLUSIONS: These findings underscore the potential roles of VdMAT1-1-1 and VdMAT1-2-1 in sexual reproduction and confirm their involvement in various asexual processes of V. dahliae, offering novel insights into the functions of mating type genes in this species.

Knowledge of insect pest ecology and biology is important for maximizing crop protection and reducing crop losses. Currently, we lack an efficient control program for the cocoa mirid Sahlbergella singularis Haglund (Hemiptera: Miridae), the principal insect pest of cocoa in West and Central Africa. A 2-yr study was conducted in 11 plantations across Ayos and Konye, two of the largest cocoa growing areas of Cameroon. We evaluated the effects of mirid sex pheromone and climatic variations on mirid population dynamics and their associated cocoa damage. Sex pheromone traps caught 1.5-fold higher mirids in Ayos than in Konye, with more overall counts in 2015 than in 2016. Cocoa pod counts were also significantly higher in 2015 than in 2016 and were negatively correlated with temperature and relative humidity. In both localities, mirid populations and associated cocoa pod damage were suppressed in plantations where sex pheromone traps were used. Damage incidence was positively correlated with mirid counts, confirming that the cocoa pod is the preferential site for mirid feeding and reproduction. As such, damage incidence could be used as proxy for comparative mirid population level due to the mirid's cryptic habit. Of the recorded weather variables, only relative humidity was correlated (negatively) with damage severity. Our data on the relationships between damage caused by mirids and their population dynamics and sex pheromone trap catches suggest that an effective control strategy using mass trapping could be developed for mirid management in cocoa plantations.

Studies of adaptive radiations have played a central role in our understanding of reproductive isolation. Yet the focus has been on human-biased visual and auditory signals, leaving gaps in our knowledge of other modalities. To date, studies on chemical signals in adaptive radiations have focused on systems with multimodal signalling, making it difficult to isolate the role chemicals play in reproductive isolation. In this study we examine the use of chemical signals in the species recognition and adaptive radiation of Hawaiian Tetragnatha spiders by focusing on entire communities of co-occurring species, and conducting behavioural assays in conjunction with chemical analysis of their silks using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Male spiders significantly preferred the silk extracts of conspecific mates over those of sympatric heterospecifics. The compounds found in the silk extracts, long chain alkyl methyl ethers, were remarkably species-specific in the combination and quantity. The differences in the profile were greatest between co-occurring species and between closely related sibling species. Lastly, there were significant differences in the chemical profile between two populations of a particular species. These findings provide key insights into the role chemical signals play in the attainment and maintenance of reproductive barriers between closely related co-occurring species.

Sex pheromones emitted by female moths play important roles in mate attraction. The molecular mechanism underlying pheromone biosynthesis activating neuropeptide (PBAN)‐regulated sex pheromone biosynthesis has been well elucidated in many moth species, although this mechanism is species‐dependent. Spodoptera litura, an important pest, has caused serious economic losses to agricultural production, yet the mechanism for its sex pheromone biosynthesis has not been fully identified. The present study investigates in detail mechanism underlying PBAN‐regulated sex pheromone biosynthesis in S. litura. The transcriptome sequencing of S. litura pheromone glands (PGs) was analysed to identify a serial of candidate genes potentially involved in sex pheromone biosynthesis. Further investigation revealed a bimodal pattern in both sex pheromone release and mating frequency. PBAN was found to regulate sex pheromone biosynthesis via its receptor by using Ca2+ as a secondary messenger, as demonstrated by RNA interference and the application of pharmacological inhibitors. Furthermore, PBAN/Ca2+ signalling activated calcineurin (CaN) and acetyl‐CoA carboxylase (ACC), which mediated sex pheromone biosynthesis in response to PBAN stimulation. Mostly importantly, hexokinase 2 (HK2) was confirmed to be activated by PBAN/PBANR /Ca2+/PKC signalling via phosphorylation at two specific sites (ser423 and ser434 sites of HK2). Overall, our findings shed light on the intricate processes involved in sex pheromone production in S. litura, in which PBAN regulates sex pheromone biosynthesis through PBAN/PBANR/Ca2+/CaN/ACC and PBAN/PBANR/Ca2+/PKC/HK2 signalling pathways. Western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis, is a serious worldwide pest of agriculture and horticulture, and its contact pheromone is 7-methyltricosane. Two enantiomers of 7-methyltricosane were synthesized for the first time. The centra of our strategy were chiral auxiliaries to introduce stereocenter, and Wittig coupling to connect two blocks. The overall yields of our synthesis were 29–30% with seven steps. The electroantennogram (EAG) and the contact behavioral responses revealed that (R)-, (S)- and racemic 7-methyltricosane were separately bioactive, and the racemate was the most bioactive in the male arrestant activity and the female EAG test. This result provides valuable insights, showing that the racemate could be used for the support of the control of western flower thrips, which could be more easily prepared relative to more expensive enantiopure pheromone. Sex pheromones play a crucial role in species recognition and reproductive isolation. Despite being largely species-specific in drosophilids, the mechanisms underlying pheromone detection, production, and their influence on mating behavior remain poorly understood. Here, we compare the chemical profiles of Drosophila bipectinata and D. melanogaster, the mating behaviors in both species, as well as the tuning properties of Or67d receptors, which are expressed by neurons in antennal trichoid sensilla at1. Through single sensillum recordings, we demonstrate that the D. bipectinata Or67d-ortholog exhibits similar sensitivity to cis-vaccenyl acetate (cVA) as compared to D. melanogaster but in addition also responds uniquely to (Z)-11-eicosen-1-yl-acetate (Z11-20:Ac), a compound exclusively produced by D. bipectinata males. Through courtship behavior assays we found that, surprisingly, perfuming the flies with Z11-20:Ac did not reveal any aphrodisiacal or anti-aphrodisiacal effects in mating assays. The behavioral relevance of at1 neuron channels in D. bipectinata compared to D. melanogaster seems to be restricted to its formerly shown function as an aggregation pheromone. Moreover, the non-specific compound cVA affected copulation negatively in D. bipectinata and could potentially act as a premating isolation barrier. As both ligands of Or67d seem to govern different behaviors in D. bipectinata, additional neurons detecting at least one of those compounds might be involved. These results underscore the complexity of chemical signaling in species recognition and raise intriguing questions about the evolutionary implications of pheromone detection pathways in Drosophila species. Pinus sylvestris trees are known to efficiently defend themselves against eggs of the herbivorous sawfly Diprion pini. Their direct defense against eggs is primable by prior exposure to the sex pheromones of this species and their indirect defense involves attraction of egg parasitoids by egg-induced pine needle odor. But it is unknown whether exposure of pine to D. pini sex pheromones also affects pine indirect defense against sawfly eggs. In this study, we investigated the influence of exposure of P. sylvestris trees to the sex pheromones of D. pini on indirect defense mediated by egg parasitoids. Behavioral assays with Closterocerus ruforum, a key parasitoid of sawfly eggs, revealed no significant attraction to odor from egg-free pines pre-exposed to pheromones. Chemical analyses of odor from egg-free pines showed no pheromone-induced change in the emission rates of the known key terpenoids promoting parasitoid attraction. Further comparative analyses of odor from egg-laden pines pre-exposed to the sex pheromones and of odor from egg-laden pines unexposed to pheromones neither revealed significant differences in the emission rates of terpenoids relevant for parasitoid attraction. The results suggest that a pheromone-induced or pheromone-primed, egg-induced pine indirect defense seems to be redundant in addition to the known pheromone-primable pine direct defense against the eggs and the known egg-inducible indirect defense. Semiochemicals left by predators in their foraging area can be utilised by prey to avoid predation. The range of predators' chemical cues with contrasting degradation rates might provide information of different quality, potentially allowing prey to differentiate between the immediate and the longer-term presence of predators in a location. So far, knowledge about the roles of volatile versus stable chemical cues in informing predation risk is limited. We here seek to disentangle the role of ephemeral trail pheromones compared to persistent cuticular hydrocarbons of ants (predators) on the antipredator behaviour of juvenile spiders (prey), with the expectation that volatile semiochemicals induce avoidance behaviour in spiders at a higher rate compared to stable cues. We allowed the spiders to choose between sites with and without ant cues separately for volatile trail pheromones and stable hydrocarbons. Unexpectedly, spiders avoided the presence of persistent cuticular hydrocarbons more clearly than the highly volatile trail pheromone. This underscores the widespread impact of these stable cues on the avoidance behaviour of potential intraguild prey. The response to trail pheromones was unclear, possibly because spiders always encounter these cues simultaneously with visual and vibratory cues from ants; hence, trail pheromones may not contain any additional information, hindering the evolution of the ability to detect them. The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith), is a global pest that feeds on > 350 plant species and causes major yield loses. Variation in the responses of S. frugiperda males to female sex pheromone compounds affects the detection, monitoring and management of the pest. We determined geographic variation in the responses of S. frugiperda males to four different doses of synthetic sex pheromone compounds using a gas chromatography-electroantennogram detector (GC-EAD). Furthermore, we disentangled regional populations into C- and R- mitotypes via molecular analysis of the cytochrome oxidase I gene, and measured their responses to the compounds. When comparing responses of males from Florida, Benin, Nigeria and Kenya, we found some regional differences in the responses of S. frugiperda males to the major compound, Z9-14:OAc and minor component Z9-12:OAc. However, we found no differences in male responses between the different African countries. All males showed significantly higher antennal responses to Z7-12:OAc than to E7-12:OAc. When comparing the mitotypes, we found that Florida R-type males showed higher responses to Z9-14:OAc, Z7-12:OAc and Z9-12:OAc than Benin R-type males, while C-type males from both regions responded equally to Z7-12:OAc. In addition, Florida R-type males showed higher responses to E7-12:OAc than Florida C-type males. Our study thus shows some differential physiological responses of S. frugiperda males towards the known sex pheromone compounds, including E7-12:OAc, but mostly in the different mitotypes. The conventional Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm, applied to logistics robot path planning in a two-dimensional grid environment, encounters several challenges: slow convergence rate, susceptibility to local optima, and an excessive number of turning points in the planned paths. To address these limitations, an improved ant colony algorithm has been developed. First, the heuristic function is enhanced by incorporating artificial potential field (APF) attraction, which introduces the influence of the target point's attraction on the heuristic function. This modification accelerates convergence and improves the optimization performance of the algorithm. Second, an additional pheromone increment, calculated from the difference in pheromone levels between the best and worst paths of the previous generation, is introduced during the pheromone update process. This adjustment adaptively enhances the path length optimality. Lastly, a triangle pruning method is applied to eliminate unnecessary turning points, reducing the number of turns the logistics robot must execute and ensuring a more direct and efficient path. To validate the effectiveness of the improved algorithm, extensive simulation experiments were conducted in two grid-based environments of varying complexity. Several performance indicators were utilized to compare the conventional ACO algorithm, a previously improved version, and the newly proposed algorithm. MATLAB simulation results demonstrated that the improved ant colony algorithm significantly outperforms the other methods in terms of path length, number of iterations, and the reduction of inflection points, confirming its superiority in logistics robot path planning. Females control the paternity of their offspring by selectively mating with males they perceive to be of high quality. In species where females mate with multiple males in succession, females may bias offspring paternity by favoring the sperm of one male over another, a process known as cryptic female choice. 1 While evidence of cryptic female choice exists in multiple taxa, the mechanisms underlying this process have remained difficult to unravel. 2 Understanding cryptic female choice requires demonstration of a female-driven post-mating bias in sperm use and paternity and a causal link between this bias and male cues. 3 In this study, we present evidence of cryptic female choice in female Drosophila melanogaster. Through experiments utilizing transgenic males expressing fluorescent sperm, we observed that exposure to attractive males between matings prompts females to expel the ejaculate of their initial mate more rapidly than in the presence of less attractive males. While doing so, females exhibit a bias in sperm storage against their first mate, thereby favoring the paternity of their subsequent mate. Our findings reveal that females adjust the timing of ejaculate expulsion in response to male pheromones in their environment, specifically heptanal and 11- cis -vaccenyl acetate, which are sensed by females through specific odorant receptors. We provide a cryptic female choice mechanism allowing a female to modulate the share of paternity of her first mate depending on the sensing of the quality of potential mates in her environment. These findings showcase that paternity can be influenced by events beyond copulation. Simple Summary: Proholopterus chilensis (Cerambycidae: Cerambycinae) is a native species and an important damage agent in the Nothofagaceae forests of southern Chile, significantly affecting timber production in some areas, especially production of Nothofagus obliqua, with no sanitary management measures currently available. Therefore, the present research determined the predisposing factors for male–female sex approaches and identified, for the first time, some compounds that appear to mediate sexual behaviors that could be used to develop specific, safe, and effective control strategies. Interestingly, the chemical communication for mating purposes in P. chilensis preliminarily seems to include both possible "volatile or airborne" pheromones (eventually long-range ones) and short-range pheromonal compounds produced only by females, something, as far as we know, unique in Cerambycinae. During the spring–summer seasons between 2019 and 2023, in the localities of Maquehue (La Araucanía Region) and Llifén (Los Ríos Region), we collected 262 virgin Proholopterus chilensis (1 female/2.3 males) specimens emerging from the live trunks of N. obliqua trees, an atypical sex ratio in Cerambycidae, suggesting high male competition for females. Virgin specimens of both sexes were individually placed in panel traps in the field, capturing only males (n = 184) over the field study seasons and only in traps baited with females. This fact preliminarily suggests the P. chilensis females emit possible "volatile or airborne" pheromones (eventually being a long-range sex pheromone), something unusual in Cerambycinae, the subfamily to which it currently belongs, although the taxonomic status of the species is under debate. In Llifén and Santiago (Metropolitan Region), behavioral observations were conducted, which allowed us to define the conditions necessary for male–female encounters that were replicated when carrying out volatile captures (Head Space Dynamic = HSD) and collections of compounds from terminalias excised from females. In field trials, virgin females less than ten days old were more attractive than older ones and attracted males during the night, i.e., between 23:00 and 5:00 AM, when the ambient temperature exceeded 11.6 °C. The aeration of females under the conditions described above and subsequent analysis of extracts by GC-MS allowed the identification of compounds absent in males and the control, including two oxygenated sesquiterpenes, a nitrogenous compound (C20), and a long-chain hydrocarbon (C26). From the terminalia extracts, hentriacontane, heptacosane, and heneicosyl, heptacosyl and docosyl acetates were identified by GC-MS, and their roles are unknown in the development of short-distance sexual behaviors, but they could serve to mark a trail leading the male towards the female in the final stage of approach for courtship/mating. Thus, we proposed the hypothesis that P. chilensis females emit both a long-range and a trail-pheromone, which, if confirmed, would be a rare case in this family. The specific identity of the compounds obtained by HSD, as well as the activities of these chemicals and those obtained from the terminalias, should be evaluated in future behavioral studies, as well as regarding their potential to attract males under field conditions. The recognition of cerambycids as frequent and damaging invaders led to an increase in the interest in the chemical ecology of the group with the identification of pheromones and pheromone-like attractants for well over 100 species. Pheromone components of the Cerambycidae are often phylogenetically conserved, with a single compound serving as a pheromone component for several related species. In the subfamily Lamiinae, the compound 2-(undecyloxy)ethanol (monochamol) has been identified as an aggregation-sex pheromone for several species of the genus Monochamus. In other species, including Monochamus maculosus Haldeman, field trials have demonstrated that monochamol is a pheromone attractant, but at that point it was still unknown as to whether it was a pheromone for this species. Here we report the identification, and laboratory and field trials of a pheromone component produced by adult male M. maculosus. Chemical analyses of headspace volatile collections sampled from field collected beetles of both sexes revealed the presence of one male-specific compound that was identified as 2-(undecyloxy)ethanol. Electroantennography analyses showed that monochamol elicited responses from the antennae of female beetles. Traps baited with monochamol in the field captured M. maculosus adults of both sexes corroborating the identification of monochamol as the sex-aggregation pheromone of this species. The attractivity of monochamol to adult M. maculosus in our field trapping experiment was synergized by the addition of the host volatile α-pinene. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Male orchid bees are unique in the animal kingdom for making perfumes that function as sex pheromone. Males collect volatile chemicals from the environment in the neotropical forests, including floral and non-floral sources, creating complex but species-specific blends. Male orchid bees exhibit several adaptations to facilitate perfume collection and storage. When collecting volatile compounds, males apply lipid substances that they secrete from cephalic labial glands onto the fragrant substrate. These lipids help dissolve and retain the volatiles, similar to the process of 'enfleurage' in the traditional perfume industry. We investigated how the chemical composition of acquired perfume and labial gland secretions varied across the phylogeny of orchid bees, including 65 species in five genera from Central and South America. Perfumes showed rapid evolution as revealed by low overall phylogenetic signal, in agreement with the idea that perfume compounds diverge rapidly and substantially among closely related species due to their role in species recognition. A possible exception were perfumes in the genus Eulaema, clustering closely in chemospace, partly mediated by high proportions of carvone and trans-carvone oxide. Labial gland secretions, in contrast, showed a strong phylogenetic signal at the genus level, with secretions of Eufriesea and Exaerete dominated by fatty acids and Eulaema dominated by saturated acetates of chain lengths 12 to 16 C-atoms. Secretions of the majority of Euglossa were heavily dominated by one unsaturated long chain diacetate, (9Z)-Eicosen-1,20-diyldiacetate. However, we also identified few highly divergent species of Euglossa in four subclades (11 species) that appear to have secondarily replaced the diacetate with other compounds. In comparison with environment-derived perfumes, the evolution of labial gland secretion is much slower, likely constrained by the underlying biochemical pathways, but perhaps influenced by perfume-solvent chemical interactions. Sex pheromones, which consist of multiple components in specific ratios promote intraspecific sexual communications of insects. Plutella xylostella (L.) is a worldwide pest of cruciferous vegetables, the mating behavior of which is highly dependent on its olfactory system. Long trichoid sensilla on male antennae are the main olfactory sensilla that can sense sex pheromones. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, 3 sex pheromone components from sex pheromone gland secretions of P. xylostella female adults were identified as Z11‐16:Ald, Z11‐16:Ac, and Z11‐16:OH in a ratio of 9.4 : 100 : 17 using gas chromatography – mass spectrometry and gas chromatography with electroantennographic detection. Electrophysiological responses of 581 and 385 long trichoid sensilla of male adults and female adults, respectively, to the 3 components were measured by single sensillum recording. Hierarchical clustering analysis showed that the long trichoid sensilla were of 6 different types. In the male antennae, 52.32%, 5.51%, and 1.89% of the sensilla responded to Z11‐16:Ald, Z11‐16:Ac, and Z11‐16:OH, which are named as A type, B type, and C type sensilla, respectively; 2.93% named as D type sensilla responded to both Z11‐16:Ald and Z11‐16:Ac, and 0.34% named as E type sensilla were sensitive to both Z11‐16:Ald and Z11‐16:OH. In the female antennae, only 7.53% of long trichoid sensilla responded to the sex pheromone components, A type sensilla were 3.64%, B type and C type sensilla were both 0.52%, D type sensilla were 1.30%, and 1.56% of the sensilla responded to all 3 components, which were named as F type sensilla. The responding long trichoid sensilla were located from the base to the terminal of the male antennae and from the base to the middle of the female antennae. The pheromone mixture (Z11‐16:Ald : Z11‐16:Ac : Z11‐16:OH = 9.4 : 100 : 17) had a weakly repellent effect on female adults of P. xylostella. This paper proposed an improved ant colony optimization named TSACO and an enhanced velocity obstacle (VO) to solve the UAV path planning problem. The TSACO incorporated non-uniform initial pheromone distribution, a turning heuristic function, and an elite ant system to improve the convergence speed and reduce the number of path corners during global planning. The enhanced VO integrated the UAV's dynamic equation, adaptive collision radius and emergency collision cone, along with an optimal velocity selection approach to increase real-time and safe local obstacle avoidance during local planning. Simulation experiments demonstrate that the proposed algorithms have better effectiveness in terms of path length, number of turns, and dynamic obstacle avoidance compared to other algorithms. Path planning with multiple evaluation metrics makes the motion of a robot realistic, but the contradiction between the metrics and the lack of global search and obstacle avoidance capabilities increases the difficulty of obtaining the optimization solution. To solve these problems, an enhanced ant colony algorithm (EACA) with an obstacle avoidance strategy is proposed in this article. First, the path planning model is constructed, and strict movement rules are designed. Secondly, the EACA with global search, balancing the contradiction between metrics, is designed. The dynamic regulation of pheromone concentration and the mechanism of fluctuating pheromone distribution are explored, heuristic information is optimized and the path planning effect is enhanced. Finally, a new mechanism of away-from-obstacles is proposed as the obstacle avoidance strategy, which ensures a reasonable safe distance. Comparative simulations on several different maps validate the performance of EACA with the obstacle avoidance strategy for planning robot movement paths. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pheromones convey rich ethological information and guide insects' search behavior. Insects navigating in turbulent environments are tasked with the challenge of coding the temporal structure of an odor plume, obliging recognition of the onset and offset of whiffs of odor. The coding mechanisms that shape odor offset recognition remain elusive. We designed a device to deliver sharp pheromone pulses and simultaneously measured the response dynamics from pheromone-tuned olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) in male moths and Drosophila. We show that concentration-invariant stimulus duration encoding is implemented in moth ORNs by spike frequency adaptation at two time scales. A linear-nonlinear model fully captures the underlying neural computations and offers an insight into their biophysical mechanisms. Drosophila use pheromone cis-vaccenyl acetate (cVA) only for very short distance communication and are not faced with the need to encode the statistics of the cVA plume. Their cVA-sensitive ORNs are indeed unable to encode odor-off events. Expression of moth pheromone receptors in Drosophila cVA-sensitive ORNs indicates that stimulus-offset coding is receptor independent. In moth ORNs, stimulus-offset coding breaks down for short (< 200 ms) whiffs. This physiological constraint matches the behavioral latency of switching from the upwind surge to crosswind cast flight upon losing contact with the pheromone. Precise odor delivery shows that moth pheromone sensitive olfactory receptor neurons are capable of very fast response to odor offset. The Swarm Guiding and Communication System (SGCS) is a decision-making and information-sharing framework for robot swarms that only needs close-range peer-to-peer communication and no centralized control. Each robot makes decisions based on an incomplete virtual pheromone map that is updated on each interaction with another robot, imitating ant colonial behavior. Similar systems rely on continuous communication with no range limitations, environment modification, or centralized control. A computer simulation is developed to assess the effectiveness and robustness of the framework in covering an area. Consistency and the time needed for 99% coverage are compared with an unbiased random walk. The pheromone approach is shown to outperfom the unbiased one regardless of number of agents. Supporting bee populations is essential considering threats posed by human activities like pesticide usage and habitat destruction. However, the current methods for monitoring and analyzing beehives and their surrounding environments are invasive, complex, and time-consuming. These methods often rely heavily on laboratory analyses, making them difficult to implement independently in the field. This study explores the application of portable membrane inlet mass spectrometer (MIMS) for noninvasive hive analysis, demonstrating its ability to detect various compounds indicative of hive conditions and environmental stressors. In addition to the expected compounds found in beehives, such as α-bergamotene, hexadecanoic acid, heptadecane, hexadecanamide, α-bisabolol-, 9-octadecenamide, (Z) − , and benzaldehyde, unexpected compounds, pollutants, like indane (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon) and carbofuran (pesticide), were also detected. The MIMS detection method provides rapid, accurate, and real-time results, making it suitable for preventive measures against bee diseases and integral to environmental biomonitoring. The use of sex pheromones for the attraction of potential mating partners is widespread in insects. Species-specificity of these chemical signals is essential, particularly in closely related species with overlapping habitats. In parasitoid wasps of the genus Nasonia, it is the males that produce sex pheromones in their rectal vesicles. The genus consists of four species: N. vitripennis (Nv), N. giraulti (Ng), N. oneida (No), and N. longicornis (Nl). The cosmopolitan species Nv is sympatric with Ng and No in eastern North America and with Nl in the west. Interspecific courtship is common in Nasonia although hybridization is prevented in most combinations by Wolbachia-mediated cytoplasmic incompatibility. The pheromone of Nv males differs from all Nasonia congeners by an additional component that is believed to ensure precopulatory isolation from the sympatric congeners. Detailed investigations on these interactions, however, exist only for the species combination Nv/Ng. Here, we report the results of chemical and behavioral investigations on the sex pheromone of Nl males. The pheromone consists of (4R,5S)-5-hydroxy-4-decanolide (RS) and 4-methylquinazoline (MQ) as a minor component which are produced only after eclosion. Pheromone titers peaked 2 days after eclosion and remained constant on day three. The pheromone is deposited by abdomen dipping which males increasingly exhibited after mating or brief contact with a female. The presence of hosts containing females about to emerge did not increase marking behavior. Site fidelity of males at their own pheromone markings is mediated by MQ. Both natural and synthetic pheromone attracted virgin but not mated females and both RS and MQ are required for female attraction. Females collected during emergence from the host responded likewise to the pheromone and 84% of them produced mixed-sex offspring showing that most of them emerge unmated. Nl females preferred pheromone extract from conspecific males to extract from Nv males, and the addition of the Nv-specific component (4R,5R)-5-hydroxy-4-decanolide (RR) to the Nl pheromone made them unresponsive. The present study demonstrates that Nl uses the male sex pheromone in a similar way as previously shown for Nv and Ng. Using pheromone diffusers is part of the strategy to control stress-related behaviors in cats (Felis catus). The goal of the study was to compare the efficacy of a novel long-acting, unpowered gel-based diffuser containing a facial pheromone analog (Zenifel® gel diffuser, Virbac) with a similar electrically powered feline pheromone diffuser that already has proven efficacy, on situational stress in cats, at home. The study involved 90 owners of cats presenting undesirable behaviors receiving one diffuser or the other: 46 received one gel diffuser and 44 received one plug-in device and a refill, for the 2-month study duration. The presence of the various undesirable behaviors was checked regularly and a general score was given to rate their presence. The most reported behaviors were related to hypervigilance, seeking the owner’s attention, hiding, excessive vocalization, inactivity, and excessive scratching. All six behaviors significantly improved over time with Zenifel® while only four improved with the reference product (no improvement for excessive meowing and inactivity). The general score significantly improved as of day 7 in both groups, with no difference between groups. More owners said they would use the product throughout the year with Zenifel® than with the reference product (80% vs. 42%, p  <  0.05). Therefore, both diffusers can be used to help control undesirable behaviors of cats at home but Zenifel® is more convenient to use throughout the year. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Same-sex sexual behavior (SSB) is an enigma in behavioral ecology as it does not result in reproduction. Proximately, the effect of sexual signals on SSB could be distinct between signal receivers and senders. For receivers, the absence of sexual signals leads to smaller phenotypic sex differences, leading to frequent accidental SSB between receivers. Alternatively, for senders, sexual signals could help locate another sender, enhancing intentional SSB. Here, we demonstrate this link between sex pheromone signaling and the frequency of same-sex pairing in two Coptotermes termites that use the same chemical as sex pheromones but in different quantities. In termites, mating pairs engage in tandem runs, where a female emits sex pheromones to guide a male as they move together in searching a potential nest site. So, females are signal senders, and males are signal receivers for sexual communication. We found that female-female tandems were more stable in C. formosanus, whose females produce more pheromones. On the other hand, although both species did not show stable male–male tandems, males of C. gestroi , whose females produce fewer pheromones, spent more time attempting to follow another male. Thus, stronger pheromones lead to sender–sender SSB, while weaker pheromones lead to receiver–receiver SSB. Simple Summary: The main aim of this study was to identify antennally active pheromone components from the citrus long-horned beetle, Anoplophora chinensis, and to test them for behavioral activity. Simple Summary: The number of invasive pests has increased worldwide, mainly due to international trade. This problem is further exacerbated by climate change and the continued restrictions on the quantity and number of pesticides imposed by international authorities. Delottococcus aberiae, a mealybug native to South Africa, was first detected in Europe in 2009, specifically in the Valencia Community (Spain). The identification of its sex pheromone allowed the development of a monitoring network for this pest a decade later. This network facilitated the mapping of the affected citrus area and its subsequent expansion over time. The monitoring network has revealed that from 2019 until 2023, the citrus area affected by the pest has considerably increased. This network, in conjunction with fruit damage assessments conducted at the end of the crop cycle, has also allowed us to know that the damage to the fruit is independent of the maximum annual population level of the pest. The male catches obtained during the months of March to June, when fruit setting occurs, seem to be related to economic losses due to fruit damage. The invasive mealybug Delottococcus aberiae De Lotto (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) has rapidly spread in the Mediterranean basin since its detection in 2009 in the Valencia Community in eastern Spain. The use of sticky traps baited with its sex pheromone, (4,5,5-trimethyl-3-methylenecyclopent-1-en-1-yl)methyl acetate, has allowed to determine the geographical distribution of D. aberiae by means of the surveillance network described in the present work. The population monitoring of the pest over a five-year period (2019–2023) has revealed an increase from 31% to 70% of the affected citrus-growing area. The monitoring network has also allowed a better understanding of the pests' biological cycle throughout the year. The populations start growing from March to June and reach their maximum in July–August. During autumn, there is a gradual decline in the population. Although the highest annual populations were detected in 2022 and 2023, the greatest crop losses were recorded in 2020 and 2021, with mean values near 18%. Data suggest that the damage responsible for fruit deformation, and thus the economic losses, are related to the population levels in spring (April–May) rather than those in summer (July–August). Simple Summary: The rice leaf-roller Cnaphalocrocis medinalis is a migratory pest of rice. Monitoring its population is important in integrated pest management systems. Trapping them with a sex pheromone or plant odor has been used in population monitoring. We studied the physiological status of adults trapped by sex pheromones and floral odors. In the immigrant group, the number of males caught in the floral trap was greater than those caught by the sex pheromone trap. The volumes of testes in adults caught using the above two trapping methods were similar. In the local breeding group, the number of males caught by sex pheromone trapping was greater than that by floral trapping. The volume of testes was smaller in males caught in the floral odor trap compared to the pheromone trap. In the emigrant group, the adult olfactory response to the sex pheromone and floral odor was low. The number of eggs laid by the females in the local breeding group was greater in those caught in the sweep net in comparison with those caught in the floral odor trap. The blister beetle Epicauta atomaria (Germar) (Coleoptera: Meloidae) is a phytophagous pest of various agricultural crops, especially in Amaranthaceae, Solanaceae, and Fabaceae. Currently, this insect is managed through the spraying of synthetic insecticides that cause serious human health and environmental damage. To reduce the use of synthetic insecticides, the integrated pest management (IPM) programs for other crop pests rely on the use of semiochemical compounds, such as pheromones, kairomones, and allomones, to manipulate the insects' behavior to prevent crop damage. However, studies on semiochemical compounds related to E. atomaria have never been carried out. For this reason, the aim of this study was to explore the chemical communication of E. atomaria. This includes the existence of (i) a sex and/or an aggregation pheromone, (ii) attractant volatile kairomones from host plants, and (iii) repellent volatile allomones from non‐host plants. Tests were carried out using olfactometers and an experimental arena. First, olfactometer tests failed to show the existence of volatile sex and/or aggregation pheromones of these insects. Second, olfactometer and experimental arena tests failed to demonstrate attraction of E. atomaria via volatile kairomonal compounds from host plants (chard, bell pepper, and cock's‐eggs). However, olfactometer tests showed that non‐host plants of E. atomaria (thyme and lavender) emit allomonal volatile compounds with repellent activity. This work represents a first step toward the elucidation of the chemical ecology of E. atomaria and suggests that volatiles from non‐host plants help shape the host preferences of these insects. Death feigning is hypothesized to be an anti-predator behavior in which prey is temporarily immobilized in response to external stimuli. While death feigning may be an effective predator-defense strategy, there may be trade-offs in terms of energy and time for finding food and/or mating. The duration of death feigning is regulated by the balance of various selection pressures, and its duration is influenced by many internal and environmental factors. However, little is known about the factors that influence arousal from death-feigning behavior. Sex pheromones are important semiochemicals that affect reproductive success and may influence the duration of death-feigning behavior. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of sex pheromones on the death-feigning behavior of the sweet potato weevil (Cylas formicarius) by conducting laboratory experiments. The results showed that males had a significantly shorter death-feigning duration in the presence of sex pheromones because it aroused them from their death-feigning behavior, but females were unaffected. This is the first study to show that sex pheromones alter death-feigning behavior. The results of this study elucidate the factors influencing predator-avoidance behavior and reveal the impact of death-feigning behavior on prey reproduction under predation pressure. Thaumatotibia leucotreta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) is a quarantine pest for certain export markets due to its phytosanitary status in affected crops in sub‐Saharan Africa, including citrus. Consequently, there is a zero‐tolerance policy for T. leucotreta in export markets. In South Africa, an integrated pest management strategy, incorporating a systems approach is used to achieve complete control of T. leucotreta. Preharvest management is multi‐faceted, including reliance on sex pheromone tools such as monitoring, attract‐and‐kill, mating disruptions, and sterile insect technique (SIT). Geographically isolated populations of T. leucotreta occur in South Africa, and there is speculation concerning the possible loss of sexual communication between these isolated populations, thereby compromising the efficiency of sex pheromone tools. To investigate this possibility, we collected samples from five geographically isolated populations of T. leucotreta and a population used for SIT in South Africa. These were subjected to sexual attraction trials under choice and no‐choice scenarios in a semi‐natural environment. Results of the choice tests revealed that males of each population preferred their corresponding population females, except irradiated males. However, when we deprived males of their preferred females, these preferences dissipated, and they were equally attracted to females from all populations. These results indicate that local adaptation and other selection forces in contrasting environments are important in sexual communication and selection in T. leucotreta but do not necessarily prevent recognition of sexual signals and attraction between geographically isolated populations. Females' ability to select mates that can fertilize eggs directly impacts their fitness, but the secondary sexual traits that often guide mate choice may not be directly correlated with male fertility. In externally fertilizing species, such as many fish species, chemical cues in ejaculates may allow females to assess male fertilization capacity. However, chemical cues associated with sperm release have only been described in a few species, and evidence that females use these cues to discriminate among males remains limited. Female sea lamprey, Petromyzon marinus , use several chemical cues to find and interact with potential mates, including a sex pheromone released by males across their gill epithelia and a second sex pheromone released in their semen. Unlike males of many fish species that control pheromone release via urinary pulses, male sea lamprey continually broadcast the gill pheromone once they are sexually mature. This presents a potentially costly scenario for females because attraction to males that are not actively spawning or that are sperm-depleted likely wastes time and energy. We tested the hypothesis that female sea lamprey use pheromones present in seminal plasma to discriminate among potential mates. In-stream behavioural assays revealed that females (1) preferred seminal plasma + male-conditioned water (containing gill-released pheromones) over male-conditioned water alone, (2) preferred male-conditioned water + 2× seminal plasma over male-conditioned water + 1× seminal plasma and (3) oriented towards seminal plasma over large distances and when no male-conditioned water was applied. Taken together, our results indicate that female sea lamprey use seminal pheromones to find and remain near males with immediate fertilization capacity, thereby reducing the risk of wasting time and energy during their single, reproductive window. The Indian meal moth, Plodia interpunctella, poses a significant threat to global agricultural products. Although pheromone-based technologies show promise for P. interpunctella management, limitations such as single-sex targeting necessitate exploring complementary strategies. Vegetable-based oils represent a potential alternative but their efficacy, sex-specificity, and interaction with sex pheromones remain unclear. To address these questions, we first examined the attraction of P. interpunctella female and male adults to 10 commercially available vegetable oils in semi-field conditions. Sesame, olive, and blended oils were the most attractive, capturing significantly more adults compared to other oils. We then evaluated the effectiveness of these three attractive oils and their combinations with P. interpunctella sex pheromones in a grain warehouse. Traps baited with these oils captured significantly more females and males compared to control traps without attractants; however, the addition of sex pheromones did not improve male capture and significantly reduced female capture, suggesting an inhibitory effect. Finally, we demonstrated that female mating status (mated vs. virgin) did not influence the attractiveness of traps baited with these effective oils. Our findings highlight the potential of standalone traps baited with blended, olive, or sesame oil as a practical, economic, and effective management strategy for P. interpunctella in storage facilities. The Mangshan pit viper, Protobothrops mangshanensis, is a rare, highly endangered snake native to the mountainous regions of Hunan Province in China. Snakes possess abdominal scent glands, which have been chemically studied in several species. These glands can contain various lipids and peptides, but very often also complex mixtures of carboxylic acids. We report here the occurrence of novel methyl-branched unsaturated acids found in the secretions of six captive individuals living in a zoo. The structures of these compounds, 4.6-dimethylalk-5-enoates in a homologous series from C11–C16, were characterized by GC–MS and GC–IR analysis and various microderivatization reactions including hydrogenation and esterification leading to methyl and pyridylmethyl esters. In addition, dimethyloxazoline formation helped to localize the double bond. The synthesis of methyl 4,6-dimethyldodec-5-enoate allowed the correct assignment of structures and showed the (E)-configuration of the double bond for the major naturally occurring diastereomers. These acids occur in small amounts compared to the major glandular components, cholesterol, and 1-O-hexadecylglycerol, as well as other common long-chain alcohols and amides. Although a general defensive function has been proposed for snake abdominal scent glands, the specific chemistry and moderate amounts of acids reported here may suggest a function in chemical signaling for the Mangshan pit viper. In addition, proline-containing diketopiperazines were identified for the first time in snake scent glands, although an artificial formation from amino acids likely present in the secretion cannot be excluded.

Background: The efficiency and profitability of animal farming systems are closely linked to the reproductive success of livestock, which requires effective management through biological, hormonal, and nutritional strategies. The "male effect," referring to the influence of male pheromones on female reproductive hormones, offers several benefits. This leads to improved reproductive management, better timing of breeding, and increased fertility rates. Additionally, using natural pheromones provides a non-invasive and sustainable method for managing reproduction, and it can be a cost-effective strategy, reducing the need for expensive hormonal treatments. Incorporating male pheromones into reproductive management practices can thus boost the efficiency and profitability of animal farming systems. Aim: The study's objective is to examine the influence of pheromones, extracted from Awassi ram's wool and Shami goat buck's hair, on the secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) and Progesterone (P4) in Awassi ewes during the breeding season. Methods: The pheromones were extracted using a soaking method with dichloromethane as the solvent. The resulting organic extract was then analyzed using a Chromatec-Crystal 5000 gas chromatography-mass spectrometry device, equipped with a quadrupole mass spectrometer. The experiment was carried out on three equal groups, each consisting of 17 subjects, during the breeding season. In Group I, 15 ml of the ram's wool extract was applied to a piece of gauze and placed in a specially designed mask that was attached directly to the nose. In the second group, a similar procedure was followed using 15 ml of the buck's hair extract. The third group consisted of Awassi rams. The LH assay was conducted immediately before the treatment and again at 1-, 10-, 20-hours post-treatment and after 5 and 30 days of treatment to assess progesterone levels. Results: The study found that pheromones from Awassi rams and Shami goat bucks significantly increased the levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) and the Progesterone (P4) in female Awassi sheep. Conclusion: The study concludes that the pheromones extracted from the wool of rams and Shami goat bucks can stimulate the response of female Awassi sheep. Cocoa plants are one of the important commodities in plantation crops. The decreasing cocoa production is caused by several factors, one of which is pest attacks. There are several main pests in cocoa plants, namely, fruit borer pests, fruit sucking pests and lice. Currently, the use of chemical insecticides has been widely studied, causing many residues that can pollute the environment and disrupt the stability of the agro-ecosystem. One alternative that can be used is the use of attractants, namely pheromones derived from plant extracts containing essential oils. The use of pheromones with the trap method is one of the insect trapping techniques that has been widely used in control. The purpose of this study was to obtain the best combination of essential oils as vegetable pheromones to control pests in cocoa plants. This study consisted of six treatments and three replications. Treatment consists of use of vegetable pheromones derived from patchouli oil, cinnamon oil, oil nutmeg, clove oil, control (water) and combination (all treatments).

The primary function of odorant‐binding proteins (OBPs) is thought to be binding and transporting odorants molecules. The research on the molecular mechanisms of SfruOBPs binding with sex pheromones is beneficial to the prevention and control of Spodoptera frugiperda (S. frugiperda). Herein, two screened SfruOBPs (Sfru10933 and Sfru21187) were knocked down by RNA interference, and then the changes in electroantennogram (EAG) and behavioral responses of male mutants to their main sex pheromone components were recorded. Upon interfering with Sfru10933, the EAG response and behavioural preferences of males to sex pheromones were significantly reduced or eliminated. The interference with Sfru21187 resulted in a weakening of the behavioural preference, while the EAG response remained unchanged. However, the co‐interference of Sfru10933/Sfru21187 led to a significant reduction in the EAG activity of male to sex pheromones. These results reveal that Sfru10933 and Sfru21187 play a crucial role in sex pheromone recognition, and there may be a synergistic effect between them. Furthermore, these results will help clarify the perception of sex pheromones by S. frugiperda, which may provide new targets for the development of mating inhibitors in the future. Biostimulation aims to optimize reproductive parameters as part of animal management practices by modulating animal sensory systems. Chemical signals, mostly known as pheromones, have a great potential in this regard. This study was conducted to determine the influence of short-term male rabbit exposure to different biological secretions, potentially pheromone-mediated, on reproductive parameters of males. Four groups of 18 males each were exposed to A) doe urine, B) 2-phenoxyethanol, C) doe vaginal swab, and D) distilled water (control), three times over a 2.5h exposure window, just before semen collection. Semen volume, sperm concentration and motility, as well as subpopulation analysis of the spermatozoa were assessed for each condition. Additionally, testosterone levels in blood samples were monitored at five time points over the 2.5 h exposure window. We found a higher percentage of motile, progressive, fast progressive and mid-progressive spermatozoa in any of the three experimental groups compared to the control group. In contrast, the semen volume and the percentage of immotile and non-progressive spermatozoa was generally higher in the control group. We then identified a higher proportion of a subpopulation of fast and progressive spermatozoa in groups A, B, and C compared to group D. Our data indicates that sperm motility increases when animals are exposed to specific biological fluids potentially containing pheromones, and that an increase in sperm volume does not correlate with an increase in spermatozoa concentration, progressiveness, and speed. Finally, no differences in testosterone levels were found among comparisons, although males of groups A and C (exposed to natural female biological fluids) showed a tendency towards higher testosterone levels. In conclusion, our results indicate that rabbit sperm quality increases upon exposure to the biological secretions proposed, thereby supporting further investigation into their molecular identity. Colonies of ants can complete complex tasks without the need for centralised control as a result of interactions between individuals and their environment. Particularly remarkable is the process of path selection between the nest and food sources that is essential for successful foraging. We have designed a stochastic model of ant foraging in the absence of direct communication. The motion of ants is governed by two components - a random change in direction of motion that improves ability to explore the environment, and a non-random global indirect interaction component based on pheromone signalling. Our model couples individual-based off-lattice ant simulations with an on-lattice characterisation of the pheromone diffusion. Using numerical simulations we have tested three pheromone-based model alternatives: (1) a single pheromone laid on the way toward the food source and on the way back to the nest; (2) single pheromone laid on the way toward the food source and an internal imperfect compass to navigate toward the nest; (3) two different pheromones, each used for one direction. We have studied the model behaviour in different parameter regimes and tested the ability of our simulated ants to form trails and adapt to environmental changes. The simulated ants behaviour reproduced the behaviours observed experimentally. Furthermore we tested two biological hypotheses on the impact of the quality of the food source on the dynamics. We found that increasing pheromone deposition for the richer food sources has a larger impact on the dynamics than elevation of the ant recruitment level for the richer food sources. AbstractThe fall armyworm (FAW) is a significant pest of maize worldwide. Here, we evaluated the feasibility of mating disruption (MD) of FAW and the MD mechanisms involved using hand-applied pheromone dispensers with intermediate release rate and point density in maize plots. To understand the mechanisms underlying the MD of FAW, male captures and device density data were compared using profile analysis. In the first trial, we tested 0, 10, 30, and 40 dispensers/ha, and then 0, 20, 40, and 60 dispensers/ha in the second trial. Male captures were reduced up to 87% in MD plots. In the first trial, the percentage of plants damaged by larvae was lower in plots with 30 and 40 dispensers/ha, whereas in the second trial, the lower percentage of damaged plants was observed in plots treated with 60 pheromone dispensers/ha. There was no difference in maize yield between the MD-treated and control treatments. The profile analysis matched the predictions of hybrid MD mediated by a combination of non-competitive and competitive mechanisms. Although our results showed that sexual communication in FAW adults may be disrupted to a certain extent, further studies are needed to corroborate the potential of MD for FAW management. The invasion of fall armyworm (FAW) to the Eastern hemisphere poses a major challenge to the food security efforts of several nations including India. Invasive FAW population is primarily composed of two predominant strains differentiated based on the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase (COI) gene, known as COI-RS (hybrid strain) and COI-CS (corn strain). COI-RS, in particular was found to be different from the ancestral rice strain in America and displayed characteristics of typical inter-strain hybrid population. Although the ancestral populations have been tested for their mating behaviour and response toward pheromones and biocontrol agents, similar studies have not been performed on the invasive populations. We report here the interstrain mating behaviour of COI-RS and COI-CS populations from India along with their susceptibilities towards different biocontrol agents. COI-RS larvae were more susceptible to SpfrNPV infection compared to COI-CS larvae. The response towards other biocontrol agents was similar in the two strains. Electroantennogram response study revealed that the two strains differed in their response towards FAW pheromone, where COICS males displayed higher mean antennal response towards Z-9-tetradecenyl acetate (87%), Z-11-hexadecenyl acetate (12.5%) and Z-7-dodecenyl acetate (0.5%) than COI-RS males. Similar to the ancestral population, we found unidirectional mating between COI-RS females and COI-CS males while the reverse cross did not yield viable offspring. Studies of oriental fruit moth (OFM), Grapholita molesta (Busck), and codling moth (CM), Cydia pomonella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), both important pests of pome fruit, evaluated the addition of low‐intensity light‐emitting diode (LED) to delta traps baited with 3 commercial monitoring lures. Studies were conducted in 9 orchards treated with and without sex pheromone mating disruption for one or both species. OFM was monitored with a two‐part pheromone/kairomone lure (OFM Combo Dual), while CM was monitored with either a two‐part kairomone lure (CM Dual 4 K) or a sex pheromone lure (CM PH). Both pests were monitored with or without the addition of three types of a low power LED light with peak intensity at 395 (UV‐A), 458 (blue), and 516 (green) nm. The UV‐A LED was found to be the most effective among the three lights for OFM. Unexpectedly, traps with the OFM Combo Dual lure plus UV‐A LED caught similar numbers of CM as traps baited with the CM Dual 4 K and CM PH lures alone. They also caught other pest species, such as oblique banded leafroller (OBLR), Choristoneura rosaceana (Harris), and peach twig borer (PTB), Anarsia lineatella (Zeller). Interestingly, in different trials the OFM Combo Dual combined with UV‐A LED light caught significantly more OFM and/or CM females compared to the OFM Combo Dual lure without light, opening the perspective for a female‐oriented monitoring and for a “female removal” management approach of these pests. The development of inexpensive, dual‐modality traps adding a light stimulus to a pheromone/kairomone lure may reduce monitoring costs in orchards with multiple moth pests, improving the trapping efficiency. Many animals exchange chemicals during courtship and mating. In some amphibians, sexual chemical communication is mediated by pheromones produced in male breeding glands that are transferred to the female's nostrils during mating. This has been mostly studied in salamanders, despite frogs having similar glands and courtship behaviours suggestive of chemical communication. In Neotropical poison frogs (Dendrobatidae and Aromobatidae), males of many species develop breeding glands in their fingers, causing certain fingers to visibly swell. Many also engage in cephalic amplexus, whereby the male's swollen fingers are placed in close contact with the female's nares during courtship. Here, we investigate the possible roles of swollen fingers in pheromone production using whole‐transcriptome sequencing (RNAseq). We examined differential gene expression in the swollen versus non‐swollen fingers and toes of two dendrobatid species, Leucostethus brachistriatus and Epipedobates anthonyi, both of which have specialised mucous glands in finger IV, the latter of which has cephalic amplexus. The overwhelming pattern of gene expression in both species was strong upregulation of sodefrin precursor‐like factors (SPFs) in swollen fingers, a well‐known pheromone system in salamanders. The differentially expressed SPF transcripts in each species were very high (>40), suggesting a high abundance of putative protein pheromones in both species. Overall, the high expression of SPFs in the swollen fingers in both species, combined with cephalic amplexus, supports the hypothesis that these traits, widespread across members of the subfamilies Colostethinae and Hyloxalinae (ca. 141 species), are involved in chemical signalling during courtship. The tea tussock moth is a pest that damages tea leaves, affecting the quality and yield of tea and causing huge economic losses. The efficient asymmetric total synthesis of the sex pheromone of the tea tussock moth was achieved using commercially available starting materials with a 25% overall yield in 11 steps. Moreover, the chiral moiety was introduced by Evans' template and the key C-C bond construction was accomplished through Julia–Kocienski olefination coupling. The synthetic sex pheromone of the tea tussock moth will facilitate the subsequent assessment and implementation of pheromones as environmentally friendly tools for pest management. Bee alarm pheromones are essential molecules that are present in beehives when some threats occur in the bee population. In this work, we have applied multilevel modeling techniques to understand molecular interactions between representative bee alarm pheromones and polymers such as polymethyl siloxane (PDMS), polyethylene glycol (PEG), and their blend. This study aimed to check how these interactions can be manipulated to enable efficient separation of bee alarm pheromones in portable membrane inlet mass spectrometric (MIMS) systems using new membranes. The study involved the application of powerful computational atomistic methods based on a combination of modern semiempirical (GFN2-xTB), first principles (DFT), and force-field calculations. As a fundamental work material for the separation of molecules, we considered the PDMS polymer, a well-known sorbent material known to be applicable for light polar molecules. To improve its applicability as a sorbent material for heavier polar molecules, we considered two main factors—temperature and the addition of PEG polymer. Additional insights into molecular interactions were obtained by studying intrinsic reactive properties and noncovalent interactions between bee alarm pheromones and PDMS and PEG polymer chains. Sesquiterpenoids constitute the largest subgroup of terpenoids that have numerous applications in pharmaceutical, flavor, and fragrance industries as well as biofuels. Bergamotenes, a type of bicyclic sesquiterpenes, are found in plants, insects, and fungi with α-trans-bergamotene as the most abundant compound. Bergamotenes and their related structures (Bergamotane sesquiterpenoids) have been shown to possess diverse biological activities such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressive, cytotoxic, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, and insecticidal effects. However, studies on their biotechnological potential are still limited. This review compiles the characteristics of bergamotenes and their related structures in terms of occurrence, biosynthesis pathways, and biological activities. It further discusses their functionalities and potential applications in pharmaceutical, nutraceuticals, cosmeceuticals, and pest management sectors. Bacterial interactions are vital for adapting to changing environments, with quorum sensing (QS) systems playing a central role in coordinating behaviors through small signaling molecules. The RRNPPA family is the prevalent QS systems in Bacillota and mediating communication through secreted oligopeptides, which are processed into active pheromones by extracellular proteases. Notably, in several cases the propeptides show the presence of multiple putative pheromones within their sequences, which has been proposed as a mechanism to diversify peptide-receptor specificity and potentially facilitate new functions. However, neither the processes governing the maturation of propeptides containing multiple pheromones, nor their functional significance has been evaluated. Here, using 2 Rap systems from bacteriophages infecting Bacillus subtilis that exhibit different types of pheromone duplication in their propeptides, we investigate the maturation process and the molecular and functional activities of the produced pheromones. Our results reveal that distinct maturation processes generate multiple mature pheromones, which bind to receptors with varying affinities but produce identical structural and biological responses. These findings add additional layers in the complexity of QS communication and regulation, opening new possibilities for microbial social behaviors, highlighting the intricate nature of bacterial interactions and adaptation. The major and possibly only component of the sex attractant pheromone of the moth Hemileuca nevadensis (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) from southern California was determined to be (E10,Z12)-hexadecadienal (E10,Z12-16:Ald). Detectable quantities of the analogs (E10,Z12)-hexadecadien-1-yl acetate (E10,Z12-16:Ac) and (E10,Z12)-hexadecadien-1-ol (E10,Z12-16:OH) were also present in solvent extracts of sex pheromone glands, and stimulated male antennae in coupled gas chromatography-electroantennogram detector (GC-EAD) assays. GC-EAD traces from solid phase microextraction (SPME) wipe samples of sex pheromone glands of calling females confirmed the presence of E10,Z12-16:Ald and traces of E10,Z12-16:OH on the gland surface, but E10,Z12-16:Ac was not detected. Despite evidence for the presence of all three compounds in extracts, behavioral responses to synthetic compounds in the field suggested that only E10,Z12-16:Ald is required for optimal attraction. Chemical, electrophysiological, and field trapping experiments were carried out to identify the female-produced sex pheromone of the asparagus moth, Parahypopta caestrum, a very serious pests of asparagus cultivations in southern Europe. Gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry and electroantennogram detection (GC-MS-EAD) analysis of hexane and solid-phase microextraction (SPME) extracts of sex pheromone glands of calling females consistently detected four compounds eliciting EAG responses in male moth antennae. According to their GC retention times, mass spectra, and comparative EAG analyses with reference standards, these EAD-active compounds were identified as (Z)-9-tetradecenol (Z9-14:OH), (Z)-5-tetradecenyl acetate (Z5-14:Ac), (Z)-7-tetradecenyl acetate (Z7-14:Ac), and (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate (Z9-14:Ac), respectively. In the SPME extracts from the head-space of individual abdominal tips, Z9-14:Ac, Z5-14:Ac, Z7-14:Ac, and Z9:14 OH were detected in the ratio of 82:9:5:4. In EAG dose-response experiments, Z9-14:Ac was the strongest antennal stimulant at different doses tested. In field trapping experiments, Z9-14:Ac, Z7-14:Ac, and Z5-14:Ac proven to be essential for male attraction and a their 85:5:10 blend loaded onto green rubber septum dispensers was significantly more effective than single-, two-, and any other three-component blend of these compounds. The addition of Z9-14:OH to the optimal blend resulted in a significant reduction of male catches. The ability to recognize and differentiate between conspecifics and heterospecifics as well as their signals is critical for the coexistence of closely related species. In the genus Rattus , species are morphologically similar and multiple species often coexist. Here, we investigated the interspecific recognition and signal differentiation of two sympatric rat species, the brown rat (Rattus norvegicus , RN) and the Asian house rat (Rattus tanezumi , RT). In a two-way choice test, both RN and RT females showed a preference for conspecific male rats to heterospecific ones. RT females showed a significant preference for accessible urine of males of same species to those of other species, but not for the inaccessible urine. On the other hand, there were significant differences in the structural characteristics of the ultrasonic vocalization emitted by males of these two rat species. Sodium dodecyl sulphate‒polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS‒PAGE) and isoelectric focusing electrophoresis unveiled that major urinary proteins (MUPs) in voided urine were more highly expressed in RN males versus RT males. Sex pheromones are considered to play critical roles in partner communication of most parasitic Hymenoptera. However, the identification of sex pheromone components remains limited to a few families of parasitoid wasps. In this study, we functionally characterized a candidate sex pheromone component in Microplitis mediator (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a solitary parasitoid of Noctuidae insects. We found that the body surface extract from female wasps could significantly stimulate courtship behavior of males. Gas chromatography‐electroantennographic detection (GC‐EAD) analysis revealed that a candidate semiochemical from extract triggered significant electrophysiological response of antennae of males. By performing gas chromatography‐mass spectrometer (GC‐MS) measurement, GC‐EAD active compound was identified as n‐octyl acrylate, a candidate sex pheromone component in female M. mediator. In electroantennogram (EAG) tests, antennae of male wasps showed significantly higher electrophysiological responses to n‐octyl acrylate than those of females. Y‐tube olfactometer assays indicated that male wasps significantly chose n‐octyl acrylate compared with the control. Furthermore, male wasps showed a remarkable preference for n‐octyl acrylate in a simulated field condition behavioral trial; simultaneously, n‐octyl acrylate standard could also trigger significant courtship behavior in males. We propose that n‐octyl acrylate, as a candidate vital sex pheromone component, could be utilized to design behavioral regulators of M. mediator to implement the protection and utilization of natural enemies.
