Health information activities essentially are geared towards raising people's awareness on good health and holistic living, thereby reducing the risks of opportunistic illness. In this regard, a related health promotional activity was undertaken in four local communities in Southern Nigeria. The purpose was gingered by the compelling efforts made by various government bodies and NGOs to curb the scourging HIV/AIDS pandemic, particularly in local communities. This Paper is therefore based on a three-day health and legal information outreach programme spearheaded by this author as a volunteer librarian in one of the communities. Planning and implementation of this endeavour undertook participatory approach with beneficiaries being predominantly youths, in cognizance to their 'reachability'. Team work makes effort worthwhile, as such some NGOs and faith-based groups collaborated, in addition to the village head (chief) of host community. High point of this activity was massive and voluntary HIV/AIDS screening which prior to the health information awareness programme, was dreaded. Nigeria has changed in diverse sectors such as education, politics, agriculture, health, technology and so forth in view of development and modernisation across these sectors. Consequently, the diverse structure of Nigeria' s federalism is discussed in terms of the various development plans put forward by successive governments. This paper particularly noted the various institutional and special libraries as contributing to these strides with a responsibility of developing a literate community of its patrons. Some of the roles that libraries play in the development of Nigeria have been buttressed through various writers relayed in this paper. The work concludes that there is no development or modernisation in practical terms without impacting on people directly, which has the major reason libraries channel their services toward people of all careers and background. This paper notes that workers in a bid to be productive in order to actualise oganisational goals, become overloaded with tasks. This naturally leads to feeling pressure which can result in stress feelings of not being satisfied with the job situation workers find themselves in. These are issues discussed in relation to library staff in six universities in three states in South - South region of Nigeria. Questionnaire was instrument used for data gathering and administered to 102 academic librarians working in the universities under study. Mean, Standard Deviation and t-tests were statistical tools used for analysing the data. Major findings designates that librarians who are motivated to work can be affected (adversely) in their job as a result of work pressure. The result indicates that librarians who have heavy work load are not as satisfied in the job as those with less work load. The study recommends among others that organisations should adopt and implement practical solutions in career path. For instance since people use energy, work should be spread out evenly to avoid draining energy. More so, the librarian diligently involved in responsibility, deserves recognition and rewards as incentive to do more and even better. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One of the annual activities of the Reading Association of Nigeria (RAN) in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria is to organize and host a holiday reading programme for pupils at primary school level. During such organized activities, 'library hour' is one of the 'spice' activities which afford them the privilege of leisure reading in choice literature. The children which participated were drawn from various school and background primarily from the urban area; they were grouped according to their age, capacity, and grade level were made to participate in library-use and other literacy activities with observations made, the essence being to familiarize them with the library as a place where value is placed on knowledge acquisition using such reference materials such as encyclopedias, thesauri and dictionaries, biographical sources and gazetteers. The children generally benefited from guided reading, vocabulary and spelling exercises. They were also taken on a tour to a typical academic library to further raise their consciousness towards the efficacy of good reading materials.
