In the face of the continuous development of novel adsorbents, developing robust adsorbents with high efficiency, strong phosphate selectivity, high regenerability, and cost effectiveness is a scientific challenge. In the present study, an activated carbon‐supported MgFe2O4‐layered double hydroxide (AC@ MgFe2O4‐LDH) derived Mg–Fe layered double oxide (AC@ MgFe2O4‐LDO) nanocomposite was synthesized at various temperatures and its potential application for phosphate adsorption was investigated. The nanocomposite exhibited a hierarchical mesoporous structure with a Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) specific surface area of 193 m2/g and a narrow per‐size distribution of ~2 nm. AC@MgFe2O4‐LDO exhibited a high point of zero charge (pHpzc) value of 9.8 and robust phosphate adsorption potential over a wide pH range of 4–9 due to its high pH buffering capacity. The effects of adsorbent dose, layered double hydroxides (LDH) calcination temperature, initial phosphate concentration, contact time, and temperature on the phosphate adsorption capacity of the adsorbent were investigated. In the present study, up to 99.0% removal of phosphate was achieved at a 4 g/L adsorbent dosage in 4 h at pH 7 and 30°C. An adsorption kinetics study revealed that the adsorption of phosphate by AC@MgFe2O4‐LDO reached equilibrium within 240 min, with the kinetic experimental data fitting well with pseudo‐first‐order kinetics (r2 >0.99). The Langmuir adsorption isotherm model fit the experimental data well, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 25.81 mg/g. The adsorbent displayed strong phosphate selectivity in the presence of competing anions, and the study demonstrated that AC@MgFe2O4‐LDO has promising potential for efficient phosphate adsorption over a wide pH range. The selection of suitable raw materials as adsorbents is a key factor in effectively removing phosphorus from water. As an industrial by-product, soda residue exhibits high porosity and surface area, which can effectively adsorb pollutants. Magnetic lanthanum-iron soda residue (La-Fe-CSR) was synthesized using the co-precipitation method, and its characterization and mechanism for removing phosphate were thoroughly investigated. La-Fe-CSR exhibited good adsorption performance under acidic conditions (3 < pH < 7). A high concentration of HCO3− (100 mg/L) reduced the adsorption performance of La-Fe-CSR by 8.3% ± 2.5%, whereas the presence of other coexisting ions had a smaller impact. The adsorption of phosphate by La-Fe-CSR was controlled by chemisorption and reached saturation after approximately 120 min. The phosphate adsorption by La-Fe-CSR was significantly higher than that of soda residue (43.65 ± 3.39 mg/g), reaching 74.87 ± 2.46 mg/g. Ligand exchange and inner-sphere complexation constituted the primary mechanisms through which L-Fe-CSR removed phosphate. After 5 consecutive cycles, La-Fe-CSR maintained a phosphate removal efficiency of 74.5 ± 1.6%. It demonstrated good performance in removing total phosphorus from real domestic sewage, with a removal rate of 94.9 ± 0.5%. The excess phosphate in water leads to eutrophication. To reduce eutrophication, alginate-pectin supported bentonite-hydrotalcite cross-linked with zirconium-cerium bimetal ions based biopolymeric composite namely APBHZC bimetallic composite was synthesized for phosphate removal from water. SEM, EDAX and FTIR techniques were used to classify the physico-chemical properties of APBHZC bimetallic composite. Adsorption studies like pH, co-ions, temperature and contact time were carried out under batch method. The developed APBHZC bimetallic composite achieved a maximum phosphate adsorption capacity of 42.50 mg/g within 40 min. The pH of the solution interferes with phosphate adsorption using APBHZC bimetallic composite. Among the co-ions, sulphate ions affected the phosphate adsorption onto APBHZC bimetallic composite. Isotherm studies were described that the phosphate adsorption onto APBHZC bimetallic composite was multilayer adsorption process and it was followed by Freundlich isotherm model. Kinetic studies illustrated that the intraparticle diffusion and pseudo-second-order were more suitable models for phosphate adsorption onto APBHZC bimetallic composite. Thermodynamics studies revealed that the phosphate adsorption on bimetallic composite was spontaneous and endothermic in nature. The developed APBHZC bimetallic composite can be reused upto 4 cycles. Since it is a limiting nutrient element in rivers and lakes, the effective removal of phosphorus is key to alleviating eutrophication. In this study, the one-pot solvothermal method was adopted to prepare an environmentally friendly Ca-Fe-La composite. This is an amorphous material with a large specific surface area of 278.41 m2 g−1. The effects of coexisting anions and pH on the phosphate removal performance were explored. Phosphate adsorption mechanisms were revealed by various characterization techniques. The phosphate adsorption obeyed the fractal-like pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetic model, implying that the overall adsorption system was highly heterogeneous. In this work, the maximum adsorption capacity predicted by the Langmuir model was 93.0 mg g−1 (as PO43−-P). The phosphate-loaded Ca-Fe-La composite could be used as a slow-release fertilizer, achieving waste management and resource utilization. The presence of SO42−, CO32− and HCO3− anions inhibited the phosphate adsorption significantly. It was unfavorable for phosphate removal at a high pH value. The present study utilised an adsorbent that integrates Mg with Al and La (i.e. MAL composite) to remove low-concentration phosphate from wastewater. The adsorption properties of MAL were identified through batch experiments of phosphate removal, in which the impacts of influencing factors such as initial pH and reaction time on the phosphate adsorption by MAL adsorbent were explored. Besides, the thermodynamics and kinetics were also investigated, where the phosphate adsorption follows the pseudo-second-order kinetics, indicating that chemisorption and internal diffusion control dominate the phosphate removal. Dynamic phosphate removal by MAL adsorbent was investigated using a fixed-bed column at different adsorbent particle sizes, flow rates and temperatures, in which the breakthrough curves were simulated. The phosphate removal by MAL adsorbent was examined at practical wastewater treatment, which achieves high efficiency and thus provides a preliminary basis for the commercial use of the adsorbent. The textile industry is a pillar of the manufacturing sector worldwide, but it still represents a significantly polluting production sector since it is energy-, water- and natural resource-intensive. Herein, waste wool that did not meet the technical requirements to be used for yarns and fabrics was recovered first to prepare materials for wastewater remediation, specifically for phosphate removal. The wool underwent an alkaline treatment, eventually saturated with FeCl3 and then left at room temperature or thermally treated to induce crosslinking/stabilisation, obtaining adsorbent panels. The main characterisation findings concerned the impact of alkaline treatment on morphology and structure; additionally, the samples with iron displayed a behaviour attributable to a crosslinking effect operated by Fe3+. Batch experiments showed that only samples with iron were efficient in phosphate adsorption, with a high removal percentage obtained in a wide pH range. Adsorption isotherms and kinetics were investigated, suggesting a complex system of interactions. Moreover, during the alkaline treatment necessary to prepare such wool-derived adsorbent panels, a significant amount of wool hydrolysates left in the solution was produced. These substances, in view of zero-waste procedures, were isolated and re-employed as dyeing auxiliaries. The reuse of solid wastes has awakened much attention and triggered extensive research, especially given the fact that kitchen waste (KW) and waste bentonite as typical solid wastes are increasing rapidly worldwide. In this work, the KW and waste bentonite were co-valorized to produce KW-bentonite (KWB) adsorbent at the mass ratio of 7:3 at 1000 °C. The effects of adsorbent dose, solution pH, and coexisting substances on the phosphate removal by KWB adsorbent were explored in a batch system, achieving the maximum adsorption capacity of 23.04 mg/g. Besides, it could be seen that the adsorption process of phosphate by KWB adsorbent depends on chemisorption through the analysis of thermodynamic and kinetic results. The properties of KWB adsorbent were analyzed to explore the adsorption process while an economic analysis was conducted to identify the practical application potential of KWB adsorbent for P-contaminated wastewater. In conclusion, the present study not only offers new insights into the synergistic effect of kitchen waste and waste bentonite for environmental pollution control, but also provides a feasible waste-to-wealth strategy for converting kitchen waste and waste bentonite into KWB adsorbent that can be used as an effective phosphate adsorbent. A substantial portion of the phosphorus utilized in crop and food production is dispersed into soil and water, posing a challenge to the management of eutrophication and sustainable nutrient recovery. This research focuses on the reclamation of phosphate from polluted water through affinitive adsorption on biochar derived from spent coffee grounds (SCG). SCG were subjected to pyrolysis within a N2-purged vertical furnace across a temperature range of 300–550 °C, with a 1-h holding time. The adsorption capability of SCG biochar was systematically investigated and experimental data were interpreted using Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. Notably, the biochar pyrolyzed at 450 °C and activated with a Fe/biochar mass ratio of 2:1 demonstrated the highest adsorption capacity (0.87 mg P/g biochar) when exposed to the highest initial phosphate concentration in the solution (15 mg P/L). Comparative analyses revealed that the removal efficiency of non-activated SCG biochar was considerably lower (5.7%) compared to the corresponding activated biochar (up to 17.3%). This highlights the significant increase in adsorption capacity facilitated by the introduction of ferric chloride. Furthermore, phosphate desorption experiments were conducted to assess the biochar's phosphorus release characteristics and stability. The results demonstrate the positive outcomes of upcycling SCG waste material as a pollutant sorbent and the potential to diminish reliance on chemical fertilizers through the recovery of Fe-phosphate-enriched SCG biochar.

Forest fires are a primary driver of biogeochemical processes in ecosystems and affect the soil nutrient balance by altering the distribution of organic matter and associated nutrients as well as the composition and availability of elemental nutrients. We investigated the changes in soils' phosphorus (P) fractions and the adsorption characteristics of potassium dihydrogen orthophosphate (orthoP) and myo‐inositol hexakisphosphate (IHP) at two depths (0–5 and 5–10 cm) in soils from two sites differing in fire severity: long‐unburned and heavily burned. Five years after the fire, there were increases in the total P and extractable inorganic P (H2O‐P, NaHCO3‐Pi, NaOH‐Pi, D.HCl‐Pi and C.HCl‐Pi) contents. Conversely, there was a decrease in organic P (NaHCO3‐Po, NaOH‐Po and C.HCl‐Po). The adsorption of soil for orthoP at a depth of 0–5 cm was dependent on the amount of P supplied by the soil; at low concentrations, heavily burned soil showed a lower adsorption than long‐unburned soil. However, at high concentrations, the adsorption of heavily burned soil was significantly larger than that of long‐unburned soil. With respect to IHP, the adsorption of long‐unburned soil was also more significant at depths of 0–5 cm. The adsorption of both orthoP and IHP of heavily burned soil was significantly higher than that of long‐unburned soil at a depth of 5–10 cm. Fire also decreased the binding degree (k1) of soil‐P and the solid phase at depths of 0–5 and 5–10 cm. The increase in P adsorption capacity outweighed the addition of P from ash, resulting in less leaching in heavily burned areas and minimizing P loss. Overall, forest fires significantly affect the adsorption characteristics and P fractions of soil, specifically orthoP and IHP, during the initial stage of postfire recovery. These effects are closely related to the direct influences of iron oxide, soil organic matter and aluminium oxide in the soil and may even produce relatively long‐term effects on the P recycling process of the entire ecosystem. In this paper, nitrogen-doped (ND) and nitrogen-magnesium co-doped (NMD) chars were synthesized by different combinations of pyrolysis-activation steps of anaerobically digested fiber (ADF), wheat straw (WS), and Douglas fir wood (DFW) to adsorb phosphate from aqueous solutions. Five different series of char were produced through different methods: (1) biomass pyrolyzed under N2, (2) biomass pyrolyzed under N2 followed by activation with ammonia, (3) biomass pyrolyzed and char activated both in the presence of NH3, (4) biomass impregnated with MgCl2 pyrolyzed under N2, and (5) biomass impregnated with MgCl2 pyrolyzed under NH3. Proximate analysis, elemental composition, gas physisorption, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) techniques were used to characterize the resulting chars. All the chars derived from ADF (independent of the procedure used) showed the best phosphate adsorption capacity, likely due to their higher ash content. Pyrolysis of ADF under NH3 resulted in char with phosphate adsorption capacity of 95 mg/g (254% higher than char produced under N2). Results from kinetic study show almost all phosphate adsorption by ND-ADF (one step) char occurred within 2 h. Richie nth-order model fits well the sorption process indicating that phosphate adsorption on the surface of the ND-ADF (one step) char was mediated by multiple mechanisms. Equilibrium data were fitted to different adsorption isotherms and the Langmuir-Freundlich and Redlich Peterson adsorption models provided the best fit. We hypothesized that the presence of Ca and Mg in the ADF enhanced N fixation and leads to higher phosphate adsorption. Therefore, we studied the effect of MgCl2 impregnation on DFW and WS pyrolyzed and activated under NH3. Our hypothesis was confirmed, and DFW and WS chars doped with Mg and N showed phosphate adsorption of 216 and 122 mg/g, respectively (37- and 24-fold increase compared with chars produced only under N2). A novel α‐manganese dioxide/β‐dicalcium silicate (α‐MnO2/β‐C2S) nanocomposite was synthesized for adsorption of phosphate ions from water to inhibit eutrophication. The adsorption rate constants (k2) of α‐MnO2/β‐C2S nanocomposite are higher than those of bare α‐MnO2 and β‐C2S revealing an increased adsorption rate in composite materials. The higher adsorption capacity of nanocomposites results from relatively larger pores. The phosphate sorption process obeys the pseudo‐second‐order kinetic model well and is likely governed by chemisorption. The equilibrium removal capacities of α‐MnO2, β‐C2S, and α‐MnO2/β‐C2S nanocomposite were found to be 25, 34.48, and 52.63 mg/g, respectively, which are very close to experimental values. Adsorption of PO43− onto adsorbents could be favorably described by the Langmuir model. D‐R isotherm model fitting showed physical adsorption by β‐C2S and α‐MnO2/β‐C2S nanocomposites and chemisorption on α‐MnO2. The maximum adsorption capacities (qm) of the adsorbents calculated from the Langmuir model were 28.58, 44.03, and 63.65 mg/g α‐MnO2, β‐C2S, and α‐MnO2/β‐C2S nanocomposites respectively. The thermodynamic parameters showed that the adsorption process occurs spontaneously with an exothermic nature and a decrease in randomness. In the present study, Mg-Fe and Ni-Fe layered double hydroxides have been examined to enhance the uptake capacity of activated sand as low-cost adsorbents for adsorption of phosphate. The physical and chemical properties of adsorbents were investigated by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrum, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis. The best efficiency of both adsorbents was obtained at the optimum condition of initial phosphate concentration: 1000 mg/L, adsorbent dose: 1 g, pH: 7–7.5, and a temperature of 298 K. The equilibrium isotherm studies show that the best result was attained in the Langmuir model for phosphate; therefore, homogeneous adsorption is dominated, which was also emphasised by three-parameter-isotherm models. The maximum adsorption capacity for functionalised sand with Mg-Fe and Ni-Fe layered double hydroxides were obtained 69.47 and 66.64 mg/g, respectively. The kinetic data fit well with the pseudo-second-order kinetics and demonstrate that the porous diffusion effectiveness is over film diffusion. The current paper describes the results of adsorptive performance of magnetite-sulphur nanocomposite (MSNP) for the removal of phosphate which causes eutrophication; providing algae nutrients to grow at alarming rate and therefore starve other aquatic organisms of much needed oxygen. The nanocomposite was prepared by ultrasonic-heating method using sulphur and magnetite nanoparticles as starting materials in the presence of citric acid as stabilising agent. Formation of nanocomposite was verified by FTIR, SEM, EDX, TEM, UV-Vis, XRD, TGA and pH of point of zero charge measurements. Adsorptive removal of phosphate by the nanocomposite was investigated in aqueous solution by determining the effects of catalyst dosages, contact time, phosphate initial concentrations and pH of the solution on phosphate adsorption. The results indicated that phosphate uptake reached maximum adsorption capacity at 38.58 mg/g, corresponding to pH 4.5, suggesting that acidic conditions favour removal of phosphate ions in water. Adsorption process was consistent with both Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second order. The calculated parameters from Langmuir model and pseudo-second order showed that the phosphate adsorption on MSNP is a feasible process. Adsorption mechanism was attributed to bimolecular interactions involving anionic species of phosphate and cationic sites of MSNP. The spent MSNP was easily regenerated with NaOH and reused for more than four adsorption-desorption cycles. This study delves into the potential of vermiculite-based adsorbents for phosphate removal from aqueous solutions. CTAB and zirconium-modified natural vermiculite slices (CZV) were employed, with XRF analysis confirming successful zirconium loading. The Langmuir model indicated monolayer adsorption behavior, suggesting a preferential adsorption characteristic. The presence of coexisting ions showed varied effects on phosphate removal, with increasing CO32− concentrations slightly inhibiting phosphate removal by CZV, while increasing NO3−, SO42−, and Cl− concentrations improved phosphate removal by all adsorbents. Notably, the vermiculite adsorbents, despite their larger particle size, demonstrated a competitive adsorption capacity when compared to other adsorbents. The practicality of these adsorbents is further emphasized by their potential direct application in artificial wetlands and lakes without posing ecological risks. Moreover, the reutilization of used vermiculite adsorbents is highlighted as a sustainable approach, considering their beneficial effects on the growth of submerged macrophytes and sediment microecological environments. This research underscores the efficacy of modified natural vermiculite slices in phosphate adsorption, paving the way for broader environmental applications and offering a promising solution to water purification challenges. The properties and phosphate adsorption capability of the one-step method and electrochemical method in modifying peanut shell biochar have been determined. The one-step method deposits MgO and Fe3O4 onto biochar through chemical impregnation and regularly affects the functional groups and magnetic separation of biochar, thereby enhancing its ability to adsorb phosphate. In contrast, the electrochemical method is not favorable for modifying functional groups of biochar but can promote phosphate adsorption because of the formation of MgFe2O4 and Fe3O4 using electrolysis. The adsorption isotherm and kinetics data suggest that adsorption is monolayer onto a homogeneous surface and phosphate adsorption could be controlled by chemical processes. Biochar with the addition of both Fe2+ and Mg2+ shows better phosphate adsorption capability than those with barely any Fe2+ additions. Excessive phosphorus in water would cause eutrophication and deterioration of the ecological environment. Herein, the La-MOFs/Al2O3 composite was successfully prepared by the in situ hydrothermal synthesis method for granulation, which was conducive to exerting the phosphate adsorption capacity and facilitating practical application. The materials were characterized by SEM, EDX, XRD, BET, FTIR, and Zeta. In addition, the adsorption performance of La-MOFs/Al2O3 was evaluated through adsorption kinetics and isotherms, showing that the Langmuir adsorption capacity was 16.34 mgP·g-1 (25 °C) and increased with the water temperature. Moreover, the batch influence experiments of intimal pH, adsorbent dosage, coexisting ions, and stability tests were performed to analyze the potential for practical applications and verified through the natural micro-polluted water samples from Houxi River and Bailu Lake (China). The results indicated that the La-MOFs/Al2O3 was suited to a wide pH range of 4 to 10 and the phosphate removal efficiency remained above 70% after continuous use for four times, exhibiting excellent stability. It also had excellent selectivity in the presence of SO42-, Cl-, NO3-, and HCO3-, only decreased to 70.24% at high HCO3- ion concentration of 60 mg/L, respectively. And the La-MOFs/Al2O3 had excellent adsorption of total phosphorus, phosphate, and organic phosphorus in the actual river and lake water and completely removed dissolved phosphorus. Finally, a phosphate adsorption mechanism model involved in electrostatic interaction and ligand exchange was proposed. Cellulose aerogels (CA) were widely used in the adsorption field due to high porosity, ultra-light quality, high-proportioned surface area. This article used a 3D La-CA-based adsorbent to improve wastewater eutrophication. Filter paper as cellulose source was applied and lanthanum was doped. Batch adsorption experiments showed that the maximum phosphate adsorption capacity could reach 54.377 mg g−1 (pH = 3.0). At the same time, the leaching of the lanthanum of the adsorbent was negligible, which proves good stability. In particular, the 3D La-CA presented an overall cylindrical monolith and would be easily separated from water compared with the powdery adsorbent. The adsorption performance of La-CA was not significantly affected by the competitive ions (F−, SO42−, Cl−, NO3−) and could still maintain 84.8% after 5 cycles. And mechanism analysis suggested that the 3D La-CA had a specific affinity with phosphates, through electrostatic attraction and inner-sphere complexation. In general, these 3D La-doped cellulose aerogels would provide new possibilities for the practical application of adsorbents in phosphate adsorption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Red mud is a red-coloured, mud-like solid waste discharged from the industrial aluminium production process, which has a high output and is a pollutant. It exhibits a small particle size and a large specific surface area and contains active oxides. In this study, "red mud" and "phosphate" were used as keywords to retrieve research hotspots and progress for the red mud as a phosphate adsorbent in the past 10 y. CiteSpace and VOSviewer visual literature analysis software were used to cluster countries, institutions, authors, and keywords. Related patents showed that research on the phosphate adsorption performance of red mud has considerably increased since 2013 and that China has made a significant contribution. This paper summarises the main chemical composition and modification methods of red mud and collects from literature the relevant mechanism research and data on phosphate adsorption/desorption using red mud as an adsorbent. Summarising data on the microstructure of red mud adsorbent, it is found that there are few reports on red mud as adsorbent based on density functional theory. This study suggests that the problem of the steric hindrance of the red mud adsorbent in the phosphate adsorption process needs further research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
