The development of head shape and volume may reflect neurodevelopmental outcome and therefore is of paramount importance in neonatal care. Here, we compare head morphology in 25 very preterm infants with a birth weight of below 1500 g and / or a gestational age (GA) before 32 completed weeks to 25 term infants with a GA of 37-42 weeks at term equivalent age (TEA) and identify possible risk factors for non-synostotic head shape deformities. For three-dimensional head assessments, a portable stereophotogrammetric device was used. The most common and distinct head shape deformity in preterm infants was dolichocephaly. Severity of dolichocephaly correlated with GA and body weight at TEA but not with other factors such as neonatal morbidity, sex or total duration of respiratory support. Head circumference (HC) and cranial volume (CV) were not significantly different between the preterm and term infant group. Digitally measured HC and the CV significantly correlated even in infants with head shape deformities. Our study shows that stereophotogrammetric head assessment is feasible in all preterm and term infants and provides valuable information on volumetry and comprehensive head shape characteristics. Measuring outcomes from treatments to the skin is either reliant upon patient's subjective feedback or scale-based peer assessments. Three-Dimensional stereophotogrammetry intend to accurately quantify skin microtopography before and after treatments. The objective of this study is comparing the accuracy of stereophotogrammetry with a scale-based peer evaluation in assessing topographical changes to skin surface following laser treatment. A 3D stereophotogrammetry system photographed skin surface of 48 patients with facial wrinkles or scars before and three months after laser resurfacing, followed immediately by topical application of vitamin C. The software measured changes in skin roughness, wrinkle depth and scar volume. Images were presented to three observers, each independently scoring cutaneous improvement according to Investigator Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (IGAIS). As for the results, a trend reflecting skin/scar improvement was reported by 3D SPM measurements and raters. The percentage of topographical change given by the raters matched 3D SPM findings. Agreement was highest when observers analysed 3D images. However, observers overestimated skin improvement in a nontreatment control whilst 3D SPM was precise in detecting absence of intervention. This study confirmed a direct correlation between the IGAIS clinical scale and 3D SPM and confirmed the efficacy and accuracy of the latter when assessing cutaneous microtopography alterations as a response to laser treatment.

Objective: The initial wound measurement and regular monitoring of diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) is critical to assess treatment response. There is no standardized, universally accepted, quick, reliable, and quantitative assessment method to characterize DFU. To address this need, a novel topographic imaging system has been developed. Our study aims at assessing the reliability and practicality of the WoundVue ® camera technology in the assessment of DFU. Approach: The WoundVue system is a prototype device. It consists of two infrared cameras and an infrared projector, and it is able to produce a three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the wound structure. Fifty-seven diabetic foot wounds from patients seen in a multidisciplinary foot clinic were photographed from two different angles and distances by using the WoundVue camera. Wound area, volume, and maximum depth were measured for assessment of reliability. Thirty-one of these wounds also had area calculated by using the established Visitrak™ system, and a correlation between the area obtained by using both systems was assessed. Results: WoundVue images analysis showed excellent agreement for area (intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC]: 0.995), volume (ICC: 0.988), and maximum depth (ICC: 0.984). Good agreement was found for area measurement by using the WoundVue camera and Visitrak system (ICC: 0.842). The average percentage differences between measures obtained by using the WoundVue from different angles for assessment of different sizes and shapes of wounds were 2.9% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.3-5.4), 12.9% (95% CI: 9.6-35.7), and 6.2% (95% CI: 2.3-14.7) for area, maximum depth, and volume, respectively. Innovation: This is the first human trial evaluating this novel 3D wound measurement device. Conclusion: The WoundVue system is capable of recreating a 3D model of DFU and produces consistent data. Digital images are ideal for monitoring wounds over time, and the WoundVue camera has the potential to be a valuable adjunct in diabetic foot wound care.

Background: The evaluation of thoracoabdominal mobility is a tool extensively used in the physiotherapy practice in different populations. Photogrammetry may be a simple tool to analyse thoracoabdominal mobility; however, it is unclear whether this assessment can be a reliable method., Aim: To test the reliability intra-examinator by photogrammetry in asthmatic patients and in health controls., Methods: Twenty-six asthmatic patients (29 ± 9 years) and 14 healthy matched controls (27 ± 8 years) were assessed by thoracoabdominal mobility. Photographs during rest, during inspiration and expiration maximum were used to calculate latero-lateral and antero-posterior diameters of the thorax (at axillary and xiphoid levels) and umbilical by markers positioned in osseous structures. An evaluator obtained the same measurements in an 8-day interval., Results: We found a moderate reliability for axillary, xiphoid and umbilical mobility (average intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC] respectively [0.68, 0.55 and 0.73]) for asthmatic group. In addition, for control group, we found a moderate reliability for axillary mobility (average ICC respectively [0.68] and a good reliability for xiphoid and umbilical mobility) (average ICC 0.81 and 0.70). Bland-Altman plots showed goods limit of agreement in photos 1 and 2 in both groups., Conclusion: The photogrammetric analysis of thoracoabdominal mobility presented itself as a reliable method and may be used in clinical practice in asthmatic patients and in controls., (© 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.)

Background: The three-dimensional surface imaging system is becoming more common in plastic surgeries. However, few studies have assessed three-dimensional periocular structures and surgical outcomes. This study aimed to propose a standardized three-dimensional anthropometric protocol for the periocular region, investigate its precision and accuracy, and determine the three-dimensional periocular anthropometric norms for young Caucasians., Methods: Thirty-nine healthy young Caucasians (78 eyes) were enrolled. Three-dimensional facial images were obtained with a VECTRA M3 stereophotogrammetry device. Thirty-eight measurements in periocular regions were obtained from these images. Every subject underwent facial surface capture twice to evaluate its precision. A paper ruler was applied to assess its accuracy., Results: Sixty-three percent of measurements in linear distances, curvatures, angles, and indices were found to reach a statistically significant difference between sexes (p ≤ 0.05, respectively). Across all measurements, the average mean absolute difference was 0.29 mm in linear dimensions, 0.56 mm in curvatures, 1.67 degrees in angles, and 0.02 in indices. In relative error of magnitude, 18 percent of the measurements were determined excellent, 51 percent very good, 31 percent good, and none moderate. The mean value of the paper-ruler scale was 10.01 ± 0.05 mm, the mean absolute difference value 0.02 mm, and the relative error of magnitude 0.17 percent., Conclusions: This is the first study to propose a detailed and standardized three-dimensional anthropometric protocol for the periocular region and confirm its high precision and accuracy. The results provided novel metric data concerning young Caucasian periocular anthropometry and determined the variability between sexes.

Significance: This study highlights potential differences that can arise in gaze-position estimates from first Purkinje image-based eye trackers based on how individual Hirschberg ratios (HRs) are calculated., Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy and repeatability of eccentric-viewing, prism-based, and theoretical techniques that are routinely used to calibrate HR in first Purkinje image-based eye trackers., Methods: Hirschberg ratios of 28 participants (18 to 40 years old) were obtained using the PlusOptix PowerRef 3 photorefractor and eye tracker. In the gold standard eccentric-viewing technique, participants viewed eccentric targets (±12°, 4° steps) at 2 m. In the prism-based technique, 4 to 16Δ-D base-out and base-in prisms were placed in 4Δ-D steps before an eye occluded with an infrared filter; the fellow eye fixated a target at 1 m. Each participant's HR was calculated as the slope of the linear regression of the shift in Purkinje image relative to the pupil center for each target eccentricity or induced prism power. Theoretical HR was calculated from the participant's corneal curvature and anterior chamber depth measures. Data collection was repeated on another visit using all three techniques to assess repeatability. Data were also obtained from an Indian cohort (n = 30, 18 to 40 years old) using similar protocols., Results: Hirschberg ratio ranged from 10.61 to 14.63°/mm (median, 11.90°/mm) in the eccentric-viewing technique. The prism-based and theoretical techniques demonstrated inaccuracies of 12 and 4% relative to the eccentric-viewing technique. The 95% limits of agreement of intrasubject variability were ±2.00, ±0.40, and ±0.30°/mm for the prism-based, eccentric-viewing, and theoretical techniques, respectively (P > .05). Intraclass correlation coefficients (95% confidence interval) were 0.99 (0.98 to 1.00) for eccentric, 0.99 (0.99 to 1.00) for theoretical, and 0.88 (0.74 to 0.94) for prism-based techniques. Similar results were found for the Indian cohort., Conclusions: The prism-based and theoretical techniques both demonstrated relative inaccuracies in measures of HR compared with the eccentric-viewing technique. The prism-based technique exhibited the poorest repeatability.

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the intra-rater reliability and validity in comparison with the two-dimensional radiography (XR) of inclinometer (INCL) and rasterstereography (RAST) for assessing spinal sagittal angles of AIS patients., Methods: Fifty-one AIS patients (13.5 (2.0) years, girls = 32 (63%), Cobb angle = 23.0 (17.4)°) were included in this study. Three repeated measurements of thoracic kyphosis (TK) and lumbar lordosis (LL) were evaluated using the INCL and RAST by the same operator on the same day of the XR examination. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) were used to evaluate the reliability of the INCL and RAST systems. Additionally, Pearson coefficients were computed between the XR and INCL systems and between the XR and RAST systems., Results: Reliability of each radiation-free system was excellent (ICC > 0.75 for INCL and RAST) for both the TK and LL parameters. The Pearson coefficients between each of the radiation-free systems and the XR were high to moderate for the TK (0.50 < RTK < 0.75 for INCL and RAST), high to moderate for the LL as measured with the RAST (0.50 < RLL < 0.75 for RAST) and low for the LL as measured with the INCL (RLL < 0.50 for INCL)., Conclusion: This study demonstrated that for the RAST and INCL in AIS patients, there was (1) an excellent reliability for the TK and LL, (2) a high-to-moderate validity for measuring the TK and (3) a moderate and low validity for measuring the LL, respectively. Purpose: Aim of the study was to verify the accuracy of rasterstereography (RST), as radiation-free alternative to plain radiography (RAD) in the monitoring of spine deformity and scoliosis progression in juvenile and adolescent subjects with idiopathic scoliosis., Methods: 192 subjects underwent RST (by Formetric 4D device) and low-dose RAD (EOS Imaging, France) in the same session. A sub-group of 30 subjects, selected for conservative treatment with corrective bracing, was assessed at 6-months follow-up. The Cobb angles (CA) obtained by the 3D spine reconstruction from RAD were compared with those provided by RST. Thoracic kyphosis (TK) and lumbar lordosis (LL) were compared as well., Results: RST provided lower CA compared to RAD (15° vs. 33°, mean values). The average difference in measuring CA was 18°, and the correlation coefficient was 0.55. Comparable TK was observed, whereas LL resulted underestimated by RST compared to RAD (34° vs. 43°, average values). The within-subjects correlation, measuring the accuracy of RST in monitoring the scoliosis progression, was 0.3. Accuracy of RST in identifying increased or decreased CA was 67%. Sensitivity and specificity were 64% and 69%., Conclusions: RST demonstrated moderate accuracy in measuring the scoliosis degree and low accuracy in monitoring the curve progression. Accordingly, it cannot be considered as a valid alternative to radiographic evaluation. However, since demonstrated capable of revealing the presence of spine deformity, it could be in principle considered for the early screening in large adolescent populations, but after accounting for a cost-benefit analysis with respect to other traditional approaches. Background: The gold standard method of monitoring the evolution of scoliosis has been serial standing, posteroanterior, full-length spine radiographs with curvature measurements using the Cobb method. However, over the course of follow-up, patients can receive high radiation doses. Various studies have shown that repeated exposure to radiation in children and adolescents can be harmful to their health., Purpose: To determine the accuracy of photogrammetry in evaluating the progression of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis in comparison with radiography., Study Design: Diagnostic study., Patient Sample: Ninety adolescents subjected to radiographic follow-up of idiopathic scoliosis., Outcome Measures: The angle of scoliotic curvature was measured using the Cobb radiographic method and photogrammetry. An increase of 5° or more between two radiographic exams was considered a progression of the curvature and was defined as the standard for calculations of sensitivity, specificity, predictive value, and accuracy of the photogrammetric method for measuring scoliosis progression., Methods: Patients were subjected to radiographic and photogrammetric exams concomitantly and were reevaluated after an average of 8.6 months. The exams were analyzed separately and independently by two examiners for progression of scoliosis., Results: The measurements of the curves at the beginning of the study were 39.5±16.7° and 39.5±14.3° for radiographic and photogrammetric exams, respectively (p=1.0). At the end of the study, the measurements of the curves were 40.2±16.2° and 41.3±15.1° for the radiographic and photogrammetric exams, respectively (p=.310). The photogrammetric method had an accuracy of 89% (Confidence interval [CI] 95%=82.5-95.5) for the detection of scoliosis progression, with a sensitivity of 94.4% (CI 95%=89.6-99.2), a specificity of 86.7% (CI 95%=79.7-93.7), a positive predictive value of 75.5% (CI 95%=66.6-84.4), a negative predictive value of 97.2% (CI 95%=93.8-100), and a Kappa index of 0.75 (CI 95%=66.1-83.9). Background: Three-dimensional joint kinematics during canine locomotion are commonly measured using skin marker-based stereophotogrammetry technologies. However, marker-related errors caused by the displacement of the skin surface relative to the underlying bones (i.e., soft tissue artifacts, STA) may affect the accuracy of the measurements and obscure clinically relevant information. Few studies have assessed STA in canine limbs during kinematic analysis. The magnitudes and patterns of the STA and their influence on kinematic analysis remain unclear. Therefore, the current study aims to quantify the in vivo STA of skin markers on the canine thigh and crus during passive joint motion. The stifle joints of ten dogs were passively extended while the skin markers were measured using a motion capture system, and skeletal kinematics were determined using a CT-to-fluoroscopic image registration method., Results: The skin markers exhibited considerable STA relative to the underlying bones, with a peak amplitude of 27.4 mm for thigh markers and 28.7 mm for crus markers; however, the amplitudes and displacement directions at different attachment sites were inconsistent. The markers on the cranial thigh and lateral crus closer to the stifle joint had greater STA amplitudes in comparison to those of other markers. Most markers had STA with linear and quadratic patterns against the stifle flexion angles. These STA resulted in underestimated flexion angles but overestimated adduction and internal rotation when the stifle was flexed to greater than 90°., Conclusions: Marker displacements relative to the underlying bones were prominent in the cranial aspect of the thigh and the proximal-lateral aspect of the crus. The calculated stifle kinematic variables were also affected by the STA. These findings can provide a reference for marker selection in canine motion analysis for similar motion tasks and clarify the relationship between STA patterns and stifle kinematics; the results may therefore contribute to the development of STA models and compensation techniques for canine motion analysis.

To monitor wound healing, it is essential to obtain accurate and reliable wound measurements. Various methods have been used to measure wound size including three-dimensional (3D) measurement devices enabling wound assessment from a volume perspective. However, the currently available methods are inaccurate, costly, or complicated to use. As a consequence, we have developed a 3D-wound assessment monitor (WAM) camera, which is able to measure wound size in three-dimension and to assess wound characteristics. The aim of the study was to assess the intrarater and interrater reliability of the 3D wound measurements using the 3D camera and to compare these with traditional measurement methods. Four raters measured 48 wounds using the 3D camera, digital imaging method (2D area), and gel injection into the wound cavity (volume). The data were analyzed using linear mixed effect model. Intraclass and interclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Bland-Altman plots were used to assess intrarater and interrater reliability for the 3D camera and agreement between the methods. The Bland-Altman plots for intrarater reliability showed minor differences between the measurements, especially the 3D area and perimeter measurements. Moreover, ICCs were very high for both the intrarater and interrater reliability for the 2D area, 3D area, and perimeter measurements (ICCs > 0.99), although slightly lower for the volume measurements (ICC = 0.946-0.950). Finally, a high agreement was found between the 3D camera and the traditional methods (2D area and volume) assessed by narrow 95% prediction intervals and high ICCs above 0.97. In conclusion, the 3D-WAM camera is an accurate and reliable method, which is useful for several types of wounds. However, the volume measurements were primarily useful in large, deep wounds. Objective: The purpose of this study was to review referential values for thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis for radiography and photogrammetry analysis and search for information about the interrater and intrarater reliability., Methods: The databases PubMed/Medline and LILACS were searched using the following keywords: radiograph and posture, postural alignment, and photogrammetry or photometry or biophotogrammetry. Studies containing values of thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis or a reliability test assessed by radiography and photogrammetry were selected. Random numbers were generated in MATLAB from each study individually to establish normative values for the thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis for both methods. After that, frequencies (median, first quartile, and third quartile) were obtained in SPSS 20.0 (IBM Corp, Armonk, New York)., Results: Twenty-six articles were selected, of which 23 studies contained values for thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis and 10 tested the intra- and interrater reliability of both methods. For the studies with radiography that calculated the angle by the same method of assessment, the mean was 44.07° (4.75) for L1 to L5 and 58.01° (5.75) for L1 to S1, and for T1 to T12 the mean was 48.33° (6.24). Most studies used the intraclass correlation coefficient test, showing strong reliability., Conclusion: No concordance among the results for both methods was shown. Also, it was not possible to perform the same procedure with the photogrammetry studies because of the great discrepancy in procedures and angle calculations. The quantification of thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis can be assessed in different ways; among them radiography and photogrammetry. However, the assessment procedures are not consistent in the literature for either method. The objective of this study was to conduct a literature review about postural assessment through radiography and photogrammetry, for delineating the procedures for both methods. In total 38 studies were selected by an online search in the MEDLINE and LILACS databases with the keywords: radiograph and posture, postural alignment, photogrammetry or photometry or biophotogrammetry. For the radiographic method, the results showed divergences in arm positioning and in the calculation of thoracic and lumbar angles. The photogrammetry demonstrated differences in relation to the camera, tripod, plumb line and feet positioning, angle calculation, software utilization, and the use of footwear. In the last few years, the study of cut marks on bone surfaces has become fundamental for the interpretation of prehistoric butchery practices. Due to the difficulties in the correct identification of cut marks, many criteria for their description and classification have been suggested. Different techniques, such as three-dimensional digital microscope (3D DM), laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM) and micro-photogrammetry (M-PG) have been recently applied to the study of cut marks. Although the 3D DM and LSCM microscopic techniques are the most commonly used for the 3D identification of cut marks, M-PG has also proved to be very efficient and a low-cost method. M-PG is a noninvasive technique that allows the study of the cortical surface without any previous preparation of the samples, and that generates high-resolution models. Despite the current application of microscopic and micro-photogrammetric techniques to taphonomy, their reliability has never been tested. In this paper, we compare 3D DM, LSCM and M-PG in order to assess their resolution and results. In this study, we analyse 26 experimental cut marks generated with a metal knife. Background: Volume of the breast can be objectively measured by three-dimensional (3D) photographs. This study describes the analysis of three different positions of the patient in image acquisition, in order to find the best pose for reproducible 3D photographs of the breasts., Method: Twenty-four patients were included between February and September 2014 in a consecutive way. Data were collected prospectively. 3D photographs were acquired using a stereophotogrammetry system. Images were taken twice in three different positions (arms behind the back, arms placed on the hips and arms horizontally placed). Surface based matching was applied and the absolute mean distance between the surfaces of both 3D models of the same position was calculated. This difference measure represents the similarity of the photographs., Results: Univariate ANOVA showed a significant difference in distance between the three positions (sum of squares 1.12, p < 0.001). The horizontal position presented the lowest absolute mean distance (0.45 mm). Additional post hoc multiple comparisons analysis revealed a statistically significant difference between the distances of horizontal and back position (-0.22 mm, p < 0.001) and of back and hip position (0.13 mm, p = 0.009), with better results of the horizontal and hip positions, respectively., Conclusion: Standardization of 3D acquisition in pre- and postoperative breast imaging could improve imaging reproducibility. In the laboratory, optoelectronic stereophotogrammetry is one of the most commonly used motion capture systems; particularly, when position- or orientation-related analyses of human movements are intended. However, for many applied research questions, field experiments are indispensable, and it is not a priori clear whether optoelectronic stereophotogrammetric systems can be expected to perform similarly to in-lab experiments. This study aimed to assess the instrumental errors of kinematic data collected on a ski track using optoelectronic stereophotogrammetry, and to investigate the magnitudes of additional skiing-specific errors and soft tissue/suit artifacts. During a field experiment, the kinematic data of different static and dynamic tasks were captured by the use of 24 infrared-cameras. The distances between three passive markers attached to a rigid bar were stereophotogrammetrically reconstructed and, subsequently, were compared to the manufacturer-specified exact values. While at rest or skiing at low speed, the optoelectronic stereophotogrammetric system's accuracy and precision for determining inter-marker distances were found to be comparable to those known for in-lab experiments (< 1 mm). However, when measuring a skier's kinematics under "typical" skiing conditions (i.e., high speeds, inclined/angulated postures and moderate snow spraying), additional errors were found to occur for distances between equipment-fixed markers (total measurement errors: 2.3 ± 2.2 mm). Moreover, for distances between skin-fixed markers, such as the anterior hip markers, additional artifacts were observed (total measurement errors: 8.3 ± 7.1 mm). In summary, these values can be considered sufficient for the detection of meaningful position- or orientation-related differences in alpine skiing. However, it must be emphasized that the use of optoelectronic stereophotogrammetry on a ski track is seriously constrained by limited practical usability, small-sized capture volumes and the occurrence of extensive snow spraying (which results in marker obscuration). Purpose: Clavicular shortening after fracture is deemed prognostic for clinical outcome and is therefore generally assessed on radiographs. It is used for clinical decision making regarding operative or non-operative treatment in the first 2weeks after trauma, although the reliability and accuracy of the measurements are unclear. This study aimed to assess the reliability of roentgen photogrammetry (2D) of clavicular length and shortening, and to compare these with 3D-spatial digitization measurements, obtained with an electromagnetic recording system (Flock of Birds)., Patients and Methods: Thirty-two participants with a consolidated non-operatively treated two or multi-fragmented dislocated midshaft clavicular fracture were analysed. Two observers measured clavicular lengths and absolute and proportional clavicular shortening on radiographs taken before and after fracture consolidation. The clavicular lengths were also measured with spatial digitization. Inter-observer agreement on the radiographic measurements was assessed using the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC). Agreement between the radiographic and spatial digitization measurements was assessed using a Bland-Altman plot., Results: The inter-observer agreement on clavicular length, and absolute and proportional shortening on trauma radiographs was almost perfect (ICC>0.90), but moderate for absolute shortening after consolidation (ICC=0.45). The Bland-Altman plot compared measurements of length on AP panorama radiographs with spatial digitization and showed that planar roentgen photogrammetry resulted in up to 37mm longer and 34mm shorter measurements than spatial digitization., Conclusion: Measurements of clavicular length on radiographs are highly reliable between observers, but may not reflect the actual length and shortening of the clavicle when compared to length measurements with spatial digitization. Imaging systems have an indisputable role in revealing vegetation posture under diverse flow conditions, image sequences being generated with off the shelf digital cameras. Such sensors are cheap but introduce a range of distortion effects, a trait only marginally tackled in hydraulic studies focusing on water-vegetation dependencies. This paper aims to bridge this gap by presenting a simple calibration method to remove both camera lens distortion and refractive effects of water. The effectiveness of the method is illustrated using the variable projected area, computed for both simple and complex shaped objects. Results demonstrate the significance of correcting images using a combined lens distortion and refraction model, prior to determining projected areas and further data analysis. Use of this technique is expected to increase data reliability for future work on vegetated channels.

Background: There are different methods to assess forward head posture (FHP) but the accuracy and discrimination ability of these methods are not clear., Objectives: Here, we want to compare three postural angles for FHP assessment and also study the discrimination accuracy of three photogrammetric methods to differentiate groups categorized based on observational method., Method: All Seventy-eight healthy female participants (23 ± 2.63 years), were classified into three groups: moderate-severe FHP, slight FHP and non FHP based on observational postural assessment rules. Applying three photogrammetric methods - craniovertebral angle, head title angle and head position angle - to measure FHP objectively., Results: One - way ANOVA test showed a significant difference in three categorized group's craniovertebral angle (P< 0.05, F=83.07). There was no dramatic difference in head tilt angle and head position angle methods in three groups. According to Linear Discriminate Analysis (LDA) results, the canonical discriminant function (Wilks'Lambda) was 0.311 for craniovertebral angle with 79.5% of cross-validated grouped cases correctly classified., Conclusion: Our results showed that, craniovertebral angle method may discriminate the females with moderate-severe and non FHP more accurate than head position angle and head tilt angle. The photogrammetric method had excellent inter and intra rater reliability to assess the head and cervical posture.

We have developed a pupil-corneal reflection method-based gaze detection system, which allows large head movements and achieves easy gaze calibration. This system contains two optical systems consisting of components such as a camera and a near-infrared light source attached to the camera. The light source has two concentric LED rings with different wavelengths. The inner and outer rings generate bright and dark pupil images, respectively. The pupils are detected from a difference image created by subtracting the bright and dark pupil images. The light source also generates the corneal reflection. The 3-D coordinates of the pupils are determined by the stereo matching method using two optical systems. The vector from the corneal reflection center to the pupil center in the camera image is determined as r. The angle between the line of sight and the line passing through the pupil center and the camera (light source) is denoted as θ. The relationship θ =k |r| is assumed, where k is a constant. The theory implies that head movement of the user is allowed and facilitates the gaze calibration procedure. In the automatic calibration method, k is automatically determined while the user looks around on the PC screen without fixating on any specific calibration target. In the one-point calibration method, the user is asked to fixate on one calibration target at the PC screen in order to correct the difference between the optical and visual axes. In the two-point calibration method, in order to correct the nonlinear relationship between θ and |r|, the user is asked to fixate on two targets. The experimental results show that the three proposed calibration methods improve the precision of gaze detection step by step. In addition, the average gaze error in the visual angle is less than 1° for the seven head positions of the user.

Objective: To analyse the accuracy and reproducibility of photogrammetry in detecting thoracic abnormalities in infants born prematurely., Design: Cross-sectional study., Setting: The Premature Clinic at the Federal University of São Paolo., Participants: Fifty-eight infants born prematurely in their first year of life., Outcome Measures: Measurement of the manubrium/acromion/trapezius angle (degrees) and the deepest thoracic retraction (cm). Digitised photographs were analysed by two blinded physiotherapists using a computer program (SAPO; http://SAPO.incubadora.fapesp.br) to detect shoulder elevation and thoracic retraction. Physical examinations performed independently by two physiotherapists were used to assess the accuracy of the new tool., Results: Thoracic alterations were detected in 39 (67%) and in 40 (69%) infants by Physiotherapists 1 and 2, respectively (kappa coefficient=0.80). Using a receiver operating characteristic curve, measurement of the manubrium/acromion/trapezius angle and the deepest thoracic retraction indicated accuracy of 0.79 and 0.91, respectively. For measurement of the manubrium/acromion/trapezius angle, the Bland and Altman limits of agreement were -6.22 to 7.22° [mean difference (d)=0.5] for repeated measures by one physiotherapist, and -5.29 to 5.79° (d=0.75) between two physiotherapists. For thoracic retraction, the intra-rater limits of agreement were -0.14 to 0.18cm (d=0.02) and the inter-rater limits of agreement were -0.20 to -0.17cm (d=0.02)., Conclusion: SAPO provided an accurate and reliable tool for the detection of thoracic abnormalities in preterm infants., (Copyright © 2011 Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the reliability of photogrammetry in the measurement of the postural deviations in individuals with idiopathic scoliosis., Methods: Twenty participants with scoliosis (17 women and three men), with a mean age of 23.1 ± 9 yrs, were photographed from the posterior and lateral views. The postural aspects were measured with CorelDRAW software., Results: High inter-rater and test-retest reliability indices were found. It was observed that with more severity of scoliosis, greater were the variations between the thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis measures obtained by the same examiner from the left lateral view photographs. A greater body mass index (BMI) was associated with greater variability of the trunk rotation measures obtained by two independent examiners from the right, lateral view (r = 0.656; p = 0.002). The severity of scoliosis was also associated with greater inter-rater variability measures of trunk rotation obtained from the left, lateral view (r = 0.483; p = 0.036)., Conclusions: Photogrammetry demonstrated to be a reliable method for the measurement of postural deviations from the posterior and lateral views of individuals with idiopathic scoliosis and could be complementarily employed for the assessment procedures, which could reduce the number of X-rays used for the follow-up assessments of these individuals., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. The aim of this research was to evaluate the reliability and validity of measurements obtained from clinical standardized occlusal photographs compared with dental cast measurements. This study comprised a consecutive sample of 16 patients (eight males and eight females, aged 15-24 years) in the permanent dentition without agenesis and/or tooth loss. A paired t-test and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) were used to examine validity and reliability. Both statistics were applied for intra- and inter-methods error analysis, at P < 0.05. Random error for the photogrammetric method (less than 0.48 mm) was similar to that for the dental cast measurements (less than 0.43 mm). ICC revealed excellent reliability for both methods (P < 0.01) and no significant difference for any variables, with the exception of upper inter-canine width obtained on the dental casts (P = 0.0038) and photogrammetry (P = 0.01). However, differences were less than 1 per cent of the mean inter-canine width. Inter-method analysis showed a significant correlation for all variables (P < 0.001), with good to excellent reliability (r = 0.66-0.93). A significant mean inter-method difference was consistently observed for the upper first molars (0.33 mm, P < 0.01). For the remaining teeth (left to right second premolars), the largest mean difference was approximately equal to the resolution of the human eye (0.2 mm or less). Minor differences (around 2 per cent of the mean) and an excellent ICC (0.75-0.93, P < 0.01) were observed for arch dimensions. Except for the mesio-distal width of the upper first molars, the recently developed photogrammetric method showed accuracy, validity, and reliability acceptable for clinical and scientific purposes.

Accurate calibration of a head mounted display (HMD) is essential both for research on the visual system and for realistic interaction with virtual objects. Yet, existing calibration methods are time consuming and depend on human judgements, making them error prone, and are often limited to optical see-through HMDs. Building on our existing approach to HMD calibration Gilson et al. (2008), we show here how it is possible to calibrate a non-see-through HMD. A camera is placed inside a HMD displaying an image of a regular grid, which is captured by the camera. The HMD is then removed and the camera, which remains fixed in position, is used to capture images of a tracked calibration object in multiple positions. The centroids of the markers on the calibration object are recovered and their locations re-expressed in relation to the HMD grid. This allows established camera calibration techniques to be used to recover estimates of the HMD display's intrinsic parameters (width, height, focal length) and extrinsic parameters (optic centre and orientation of the principal ray). We calibrated a HMD in this manner and report the magnitude of the errors between real image features and reprojected features. In a previous paper, we reported the virtual axis finder, which is a new method for finding the rotational axes of the knee. The virtual axis finder was validated through simulations that were subject to limitations. Hence, the objective of the present study was to perform a mechanical validation with two measurement modalities: 3D video-based motion analysis and marker-based roentgen stereophotogrammetric analysis (RSA). A two rotational axis mechanism was developed, which simulated internal-external (or longitudinal) and flexion-extension (FE) rotations. The actual axes of rotation were known with respect to motion analysis and RSA markers within ± 0.0006 deg and ± 0.036 mm and ± 0.0001 deg and ± 0.016 mm, respectively. The orientation and position root mean squared errors for identifying the longitudinal rotation (LR) and FE axes with video-based motion analysis (0.26 deg, 0.28 m, 0.36 deg, and 0.25 mm, respectively) were smaller than with RSA (1.04 deg, 0.84 mm, 0.82 deg, and 0.32 mm, respectively). The random error or precision in the orientation and position was significantly better (p=0.01 and p=0.02, respectively) in identifying the LR axis with video-based motion analysis (0.23 deg and 0.24 mm) than with RSA (0.95 deg and 0.76 mm). There was no significant difference in the bias errors between measurement modalities. In comparing the mechanical validations to virtual validations, the virtual validations produced comparable errors to those of the mechanical validation. The only significant difference between the errors of the mechanical and virtual validations was the precision in the position of the LR axis while simulating video-based motion analysis (0.24 mm and 0.78 mm, p=0.019). These results indicate that video-based motion analysis with the equipment used in this study is the superior measurement modality for use with the virtual axis finder but both measurement modalities produce satisfactory results. The lack of significant differences between validation techniques suggests that the virtual sensitivity analysis previously performed was appropriately modeled. Thus, the virtual axis finder can be applied with a thorough understanding of its errors in a variety of test conditions.

Background and Purpose: The application of radiostereometric analysis (RSA) to monitor stability of tibial plateau fractures during healing is both limited and yet to be validated. We therefore evaluated the accuracy and precision of RSA in a tibial plateau fracture model., Methods: Combinations of 3, 6, and 9 markers in a lateral condyle fracture were evaluated with reference to 6 proximal tibial arrangements. Translation and rotation accuracy was assessed with displacement-controlled stages, while precision was assessed with dynamic double examinations. A comparison of error according to marker number and arrangement was completed with 2-way ANOVA models., Results: The results were improved using more tantalum markers in each segment. In the fracture fragment, marker scatter in all axes was achieved by a circumferential arrangement (medial, anterior, and lateral) of the tantalum markers above the fixation devices. Markers placed on either side of the tibial tuberosity and in the medial aspect of the fracture split represented the proximal tibial reference segment best. Using 6 markers with this distribution in each segment, the translation accuracy (root mean square error) was less than 37 mum in all axes. The precision (95% confidence interval) was less than +/- 16 mum in all axes in vitro. Rotation, tested around the x-axis, had an accuracy of less than 0.123 degrees and a precision of +/- 0.024 degrees., Interpretation: RSA is highly accurate and precise in the assessment of lateral tibial plateau fracture fragment movement. The validation of our center's RSA system provides evidence to support future clinical RSA fracture studies.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the reliability and validity of photogrammetry in measuring the lateral spinal inclination angles., Methods: Forty subjects (32 female and 8 males) with a mean age of 23.4 +/- 11.2 years had their scoliosis evaluated by radiographs of their trunk, determined by the Cobb angle method, and by photogrammetry. The statistical methods used included Cronbach alpha, Pearson/Spearman correlation coefficients, and regression analyses., Results: The Cronbach alpha values showed that the photogrammetric measures showed high internal consistency, which indicated that the sample was bias free. The radiograph method showed to be more precise with intrarater reliabilities of 0.936, 0.975, and 0.945 for the thoracic, lumbar, and thoracolumbar curves, respectively, and interrater reliabilities of 0.942 and 0.879 for the angular measures of the thoracic and thoracolumbar segments, respectively. The regression analyses revealed a high determination coefficient although limited to the adjusted linear model between the radiographic and photographic measures. It was found that with more severe scoliosis, the lateral curve measures obtained with the photogrammetry were for the thoracic and lumbar regions (R = 0.619 and 0.551)., Conclusions: The photogrammetric measures were found to be reproducible in this study and could be used as supplementary information to decrease the number of radiographs necessary for the monitoring of scoliosis.

In 1974 Selvik introduced marker-based roentgenographic stereogrammetric analysis (RSA), a highly accurate technique for measuring three-dimensional migration of orthopaedic implants. Novel, promising, user-friendly, fast and in some cases noninvasive RSA techniques (model-based RSA, image-based RSA and fluoroscopic RSA) have been developed, and some have recently been validated. However, the most reliable RSA technique so far is marker-based RSA. A standardization protocol for RSA studies is required. In the future, implant-testing using RSA should be used routinely in selected Danish orthopaedic units.

With increasing numbers of research groups carrying out radiostereometric analysis (RSA), it is important to reach a consensus on how the main aspects of the technique should be carried out and how the results should be presented in an appropriate and consistent way. In this collection of guidelines, we identify a number of methodological and reporting issues including: measurement error and precision, migration and migration direction data, and the use of RSA as a screening technique. Alternatives are proposed, and a statistical analysis is presented, from which a sample size of 50 is recommended for screening of newly introduced prostheses.

Model-based Roentgen Stereophotogrammetric Analysis (RSA) was recently developed for the measurement of prosthesis micromotion. Its main advantage is that markers do not need to be attached to the implants as traditional marker-based RSA requires. Model-based RSA has only been tested in uniplanar radiographic set-ups. A biplanar set-up would theoretically facilitate the pose estimation algorithm, since radiographic projections would show more different shape features of the implants than in uniplanar images. We tested the precision of model-based RSA and compared it with that of the traditional marker-based method in a biplanar set-up. Micromotions of both tibial and femoral components were measured with both the techniques from double examinations of patients participating in a clinical study. The results showed that in the biplanar set-up model-based RSA presents a homogeneous distribution of precision for all the translation directions, but an inhomogeneous error for rotations, especially internal-external rotation presented higher errors than rotations about the transverse and sagittal axes. Model-based RSA was less precise than the marker-based method, although the differences were not significant for the translations and rotations of the tibial component, with the exception of the internal-external rotations. For both prosthesis components the precisions of model-based RSA were below 0.2 mm for all the translations, and below 0.3 degrees for rotations about transverse and sagittal axes. These values are still acceptable for clinical studies aimed at evaluating total knee prosthesis micromotion. In a biplanar set-up model-based RSA is a valid alternative to traditional marker-based RSA where marking of the prosthesis is an enormous disadvantage.

Study Design: Raster-stereographic and radiographic evaluation of idiopathic scoliosis without braces in a retrospective longitudinal long-term follow-up study., Objective: To investigate the reliability and accuracy of raster stereography in comparison with radiography as the gold standard, using a longitudinal long-term study design in idiopathic scoliosis, to reduce the number of radiographs required during follow-up in scoliosis patients., Summary of Background Data: It has been confirmed that raster stereography produces reliable data in patients with conservatively and surgically treated idiopathic scoliosis, up to a Cobb angle of 80 degrees. This means that the method can be used to replace radiography during the follow-up in these patients. However, no data have yet been published on the use of raster stereography in a longitudinal setting during a long-term follow-up period in comparison with radiography as the gold standard., Methods: Raster stereographs and digitized anterior-posterior radiographs of 16 patients with idiopathic scoliosis were studied retrospectively in a longitudinal study design, with a mean follow-up period of 8 years (range 3 to 10 y). Lateral vertebral deviation and vertebral rotation were measured between C7 and L4 using raster stereography and radiography, compared with Cobb angles, and correlated., Results: During the follow-up period, the Cobb angle increased on average by 13 degrees. The progression of lateral vertebral deviation measured using both techniques, and that of vertebral rotation measured with radiography, was greater than that of the Cobb angle, whereas that of raster-stereographic vertebral rotation was lower. However, there was an excellent correlation between the raster-stereographic and radiographic progression of these parameters (R2 >or=0.5). The mean difference between raster stereographs and radiographs was 3.21 mm for lateral vertebral deviation and 2.45 degrees for vertebral rotation., Conclusions: Using the parameters of lateral vertebral deviation and vertebral rotation, raster stereography accurately reflects the radiographically measured progression of idiopathic scoliosis during the long-term follow-up, but these parameters are not directly comparable with the Cobb angle. In the follow-up of scoliosis patients, the authors would recommend a raster-stereographic examination every 3 to 6 months and a radiographic examination every 12 to 18 months only, provided that raster stereography does not show rapid deterioration of the scoliosis. The patient's radiation exposure can be reduced using this approach.

The purpose of this work was to assess the technical performance of a three-dimensional surface imaging system for geometric accuracy and maximum field of view. The system was designed for stereophotogrammetry capture of digital images from three-dimensional surfaces of the head, face, and neck. A mannequin head was prepared for imaging by adding texture in the form of red paint, and facial landmarks as black ink dots. The mannequin was imaged at the manufacturer's recommended settings for human studies. Colour-coded surface difference images among repeated exposures were computed. We compared measurements of physical linear distance with digital measurements. The three-dimensional stereophotogrammetry system had a mean error in the three-dimensional surfaces of 0.057mm, a repeatability error (variance) of 0.0016mm, a mean error of 0.6mm in linear measurements compared with manual measurements, and a field of view of 170 degrees horizontally and 102 degrees vertically.

Unlabelled: Roentgen stereophotogrammetric analysis generally is accepted as the most accurate method to measure prosthesis migration. A disadvantage of the method is it requires markers in the bone and the prosthesis. Model-based roentgen stereophotogrammetric analysis circumvents the need for markers on prostheses by fitting virtual projections of a three-dimensional surface model of a prosthesis to its actual projections in the roentgen image. We confirmed a model-based roentgen stereophotogrammetric analysis for a tibial component. Using implants with attached markers, we compared model-based roentgen stereophotogrammetric analysis with marker-based roentgen stereophotogrammetric analysis. In addition, we assessed precision of the model-based roentgen stereophotogrammetric analysis with a phantom experiment. The precisions for translations of marker-based and model-based roentgen stereophotogrammetric analysis were 0.06 and 0.11 mm, respectively, and for rotations, the precisions were 0.20 degree and 0.23 degree, respectively. The precisions of model-based roentgen stereophotogrammetric analysis calculated from the phantom data were 0.08 mm for translations and 0.13 degree for rotations. Although model-based roentgen stereophotogrammetric analysis is less precise than marker-based roentgen stereophotogrammetric analysis, its precision is still acceptable for most clinical applications, especially where marker-based roentgen stereophotogrammetric analysis has practical limitations., Level of Evidence: Level II, prognostic study. Study Design: Patients with scoliosis from 1999 to 2001 were monitored using radiographs and the Quantec Spinal Imaging System (Quantec) to validate the Functional Classification System (FCS) developed at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin (CHW)., Objective: To determine the accuracy of the FCS., Summary of Background Data: The authors evaluated different noninvasive ways of evaluating the scoliotic spine. The FCS was developed as a means to predict the degree of scoliotic curve., Methods: Consecutive scoliosis visits (543) seen at CHW between 1999 and 2001 for initial or follow-up examination were investigated; of them, 157 had an radiograph within 6 months of Quantec. Subjects were placed into groups based on Cobb Angles. FCS classifications were compared to Cobb angle groupings and calculated sensitivity and specificity. Pearson's correlation coefficient was calculated for 39 subjects., Results: Sensitivity of the FCS for single curve groups ranged from 0.50 to 0.63 and specificity from 0.64 to 0.86. For double curve, both sensitivity and specificity ranged from 0.48 to 0.81. Pearson's correlation was statistically significant (r = 0.45, P < 0.05)., Conclusions: Sensitivity, specificity, and Pearson's correlation coefficient reflect the reliability of the Quantec method. Therefore, the FCS can be considered as a reliable tool for monitoring the progression of scoliosis with reduced need of radiographs.

Purpose: To evaluate the feasibility and accuracy of Roentgen stereophotogrammetric analysis (RSA) versus computed tomography (CT) for detecting stent-graft migration in an in vitro pulsatile circulation model and to study the feasibility of a nitinol endovascular clip (NEC) as an aortic wall reference marker for RSA., Methods: An aortic model with stent-graft was constructed and connected to an artificial circulation with a physiological flow and pressure profile. Tantalum markers and NECs were used as aortic reference markers for RSA analysis. Stent-graft migrations were measured during pulsatile circulation with RSA and CT. CT images acquired with 64 x 0.5-mm beam collimation were analyzed with Vitrea postprocessing software using a standard clinical protocol and central lumen line reconstruction. RSA in the model with the circulation switched off was used as the reference standard to determine stent-graft migration. The measurement errors of RSA and CT were determined during pulsatile circulation., Results: The mean measurement error +/- standard deviation (maximum) of RSA during pulsatile circulation using the tantalum markers was -0.5+/-0.16 (0.7) mm. Using the NEC, the mean (maximum) measurement error was -0.4+/-0.25 (1.1) mm. The mean (maximum) measurement error of CT was -1.1+/-1.17 (2.8) mm., Conclusion: RSA is an accurate and feasible tool to measure stent-graft migration in a pulsatile environment. Migration measurement with RSA was more accurate than CT in this experimental setup. The nitinol clip tested in this study is potentially feasible as an aortic reference marker in patients after endovascular repair.

Image-guided radiotherapy using a three-dimensional (3D) camera as the on-board surface imaging system requires precise and accurate registration of the 3D surface images in the treatment machine coordinate system. Two simple calibration methods, an analytical solution as three-point matching and a least-squares estimation method as multipoint registration, were introduced to correlate the stereo-vision surface imaging frame with the machine coordinate system. Both types of calibrations utilized 3D surface images of a calibration template placed on the top of the treatment couch. Image transformational parameters were derived from corresponding 3D marked points on the surface images to their given coordinates in the treatment room coordinate system. Our experimental results demonstrated that both methods had provided the desired calibration accuracy of 0.5 mm. The multipoint registration method is more robust particularly for noisy 3D surface images. Both calibration methods have been used as our weekly QA tools for a 3D image-guided radiotherapy system.

A self-calibration method to estimate a camera's intrinsic and extrinsic parameters from vertical line segments of the same height is presented. An algorithm to obtain the needed line segments by detecting the head and feet positions of a walking human in his leg-crossing phases is described. Experimental results show that the method is accurate and robust with respect to various viewing angles and subjects.

Iris image quality evaluation plays a very important part in iris computer recognition. An iris image quality evaluation method was introduced into this study to distinguish good image from bad image caused by pupil distortion, blurred boundary, two circles appearing not concentric, and severe occlusion by eyelids and eyelashes. The tests based on this method gave good results.

Purpose: The HR (prism diopters [PD] per mm of corneal light reflection test [CLRT] asymmetry for strabometry) varies in humans from 14 to 24 PD/mm, but is totally unpredictable. Photo(grammetric) HR calibration in (of) each case facilitates acceptable strabometry precision and accuracy., Method: Take 3 flash photos of the patient with both the preferred eye and then the deviating eye fixating straight ahead and then again with the deviation eye fixing at (+/-5-10 PD) the strabismic angle on a metric rule (stick) one meter away from the camera lens (where 1 cm = 1 PD)., Results: On these 3 photos, make four precise measurements of the position of the CLR with reference to the limbus: In the deviating eye fixing straight ahead and fixating at the angle of deviation. Divide the mm difference in location into the change in the angle of fixation to determine the HR for this patient at this angle. Then determine the CLR position in both the deviating eye and the fixing eye in the straight ahead primary position picture. Apply the calculated calibrated HR to the asymmetry of the CLRs in primary position to determine the true strabismic deviation., Conclusions: This imaging method insures accurate Hirschberg CLRT strabometry in each case, determining the deviation in "free space", under conditions of normal binocular viewing, uncontaminated by the artifacts or inaccuracies of other conventional strabometric methods or devices. So performed, the Hirschberg CLRT is the gold standard of strabometry.

We present a novel linear algorithm with which to calibrate stereo cameras from two perpendicular planes. Stereo cameras are two cameras aligned in a special configuration with coplanar image planes and parallel axes that are increasingly more widely used in computer vision tasks. Our objective is to present a more practical and simplified linear algorithm for these special configuration cameras, as traditional linear algorithms usually require too-strong constraints either on three-dimensional scenes or on the camera's motion. We developed the proposed algorithm from a new constraint by exploiting the orthogonality of two planes. The algorithm has much weaker constraints on three-dimensional scenes because two perpendicular planes are commonly found in daily life. We tested the algorithm with synthetic data and real image data. Experimental results show that it is both accurate and practical.

There is a need for standardization of radiostereometric (RSA) investigations to facilitate comparison of outcome reported from different research groups. In this document, 6 research centers have agreed upon standards for terminology, description and use of RSA arrangement including radiographic set-up and techniques. Consensus regarding minimum requirements for marker stability and scatter, choice of coordinate systems, and preferred way of describing prosthetic micromotion is of special interest. Some notes on data interpretation are also presented. Validation of RSA should be standardized by preparation of protocols for assessment of accuracy and precision. Practical issues related to loading of the joint by weight bearing or other conditions, follow-up intervals, length of follow-up, radiation dose, and the exclusion of patients due to technical errors are considered. Finally, we present a checklist of standardized output that should be included in any clinical RSA paper.This document will form the basis of a detailed standardization protocol under supervision of ISO and the European Standards Working Group on Joint Replacement Implants (CEN/TC 285/WG4). This protocol will facilitate inclusion of RSA in a standard protocol for implant testing before it is released for general use. Such a protocol-also including other recognized clinical outcome parameters-will reduce the risk of implanting potentially inferior prostheses on a large scale.

This paper concerns the incorporation of geometric information in camera calibration and 3D modeling. Using geometric constraints enables more stable results and allows us to perform tasks with fewer images. Our approach is motivated and developed within a framework of semi-automatic 3D modeling, where the user defines geometric primitives and constraints between them. It is based on the observation that constraints, such as coplanarity, parallelism, or orthogonality, are often embedded intuitively in parallelepipeds. Moreover, parallelepipeds are easy to delineate by a user and are well adapted to model the main structure of, e.g., architectural scenes. In this paper, first a duality that exists between the shape parameters of a parallelepiped and the intrinsic parameters of a camera is described. Then, a factorization-based algorithm exploiting this relation is developed. Using images of parallelepipeds, it allows us to simultaneously calibrate cameras, recover shapes of parallelepipeds, and estimate the relative pose of all entities. Besides geometric constraints expressed via parallelepipeds, our approach simultaneously takes into account the usual self-calibration constraints on cameras. The proposed algorithm is completed by a study of the singular cases of the calibration method. A complete method for the reconstruction of scene primitives that are not modeled by parallelepipeds is also briefly described. The proposed methods are validated by various experiments with real and simulated data, for single-view as well as multiview cases.

In this paper, a semi-automated approach to 3-D landmark digitization of the face is described which uses a combination of active shape model-driven feature detection and stereophotogrammetric analysis. The study aims to assess whether the proposed method is capable of detecting statistically significant changes in facial soft tissue shape due to mandibular repositioning in a cross-sectional patient sample. A hybrid stereophotogrammetric and structured-light imaging system is used for acquiring 3-D face models in the first instance. A landmark-based statistical analysis of facial shape change is then carried out using procrustes registration, principal component analysis and thin plate spline warping on the 2-D facial midline profiles and automatically digitized 3-D landmarks. The proposed method is validated both statistically and visually by characterizing shape changes induced by mandibular repositioning in a heterogeneous cross-sample of 20 orthodontic patients. It is shown that the method is capable of distinguishing between changes in facial morphology due to simulated surgical correction and changes due to other factors such as growth and normal variation within the patient sample. The study shows that the proposed method may be useful for auditing outcomes of clinical treatment or surgical intervention which result in changes to facial soft tissue morphology.

Aim: To compare two reference standards when evaluating a method of screening for referable diabetic retinopathy., Method: Clinics at Oxford and Norwich Hospitals were used in a two centre prospective study of 239 people with diabetes receiving an ophthalmologist's examination using slit lamp biomicroscopy, seven field 35 mm stereophotography and two field mydriatic digital photography. Patients were selected from those attending clinics when the ophthalmologist and ophthalmic photographer were able to attend. The main outcome measures were the detection of referable diabetic retinopathy as defined by the Gloucestershire adaptation of the European Working Party guidelines., Results: In comparison with seven field stereophotography, the ophthalmologist's examination gave a sensitivity of 87.4% (confidence interval 83.5 to 91.5), a specificity of 94.9% (91.5 to 98.3), and a kappa statistic of 0.80. Two field mydriatic digital photography gave a sensitivity of 80.2% (75.2 to 85.2), specificity of 96.2% (93.2 to 99.2), and a kappa statistic of 0.73. In comparison with the ophthalmologist's examination, two field mydriatic digital photography gave a sensitivity of 82.8% (78.0 to 87.6), specificity of 92.9% (89.6 to 96.2), and a kappa statistic of 0.76. Seven field stereo gave a sensitivity of 96.4% (94.0 to 98.8), a specificity of 82.9% (77.4 to 88.4), and a kappa statistic of 0.80. 15.3% of seven field sets, 1.5% of the two field digital photographs, and none of the ophthalmologist's examinations were ungradeable., Conclusion: An ophthalmologist's examination compares favourably with seven field stereophotography, and two field digital photography performs well against both reference standards.

Accurate and precise wound measurements are a critical component of every wound assessment. To examine the reliability and validity of a new computerized technique for measuring human and animal wounds, chronic human wounds (N = 45) and surgical animal wounds (N = 38) were assessed using manual and computerized techniques. Using intraclass correlation coefficients, intrarater and interrater reliability of surface area measurements obtained using the computerized technique were compared to those obtained using acetate tracings and planimetry. A single measurement of surface area using either technique produced excellent intrarater and interrater reliability for both human and animal wounds, but the computerized technique was more precise than the manual technique for measuring the surface area of animal wounds. For both types of wounds and measurement techniques, intrarater and interrater reliability improved when the average of three repeated measurements was obtained. The precision of each technique with human wounds and the precision of the manual technique with animal wounds also improved when three repeated measurement results were averaged. Concurrent validity between the two techniques was excellent for human wounds but poor for the smaller animal wounds, regardless of whether single or the average of three repeated surface area measurements was used. The computerized technique permits reliable and valid assessment of the surface area of both human and animal wounds.

Purpose: To improve the usefulness of the Hirschberg Corneal Light Reflection Test (CLRT), using a photogrammetric technique independent of the size of the pupil, and to devise an easily remembered sequence of numbers corresponding to the fractional displacement of the reflection in various approximate angles of esotropia., Method: Photographs (slides) were taken of the right eye of 25 young adults using a centered strobe light source to produce the corneal light reflection in 5 prism diopters (PD) increments of adduction from 0 to 90 PD to standardize the Hirschberg CLRT for esodeviations. On a large, dual-projection screen, the eye of the subject looking straight ahead (primary position) was projected on one side and the various slides of the same eye of that subject looking into various degrees of adduction were projected on the other side of the screen. Measurements of the distance between the lateral limbus and the corneal reflection were made with a centimeter rule on the screen. The displacement (shift) of the corneal light reflection was expressed as a fraction of the distance between the lateral limbus and the position of the reflection (in relation to the lateral margins of the pupil) with the eye fixing in the primary position., Results: The values found were 1/4 = 30 +/- 3 PD; 1/3 = 41 +/- 4 PD; 1/2 = 59 +/- 4 PD; 2/3 = 75 +/- 6 PD; and 3/4 = 80 +/- 6 PD., Conclusions: An easily memorized similar series of values is 30, 40 60, 75 and 80 PD corresponding to 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3 and 3/4 PD. This is useful to know which prism to pick up to begin the prism alternate cover test efficiently in a small child.

Roentgen stereophotogrammetric analysis (RSA) can be used to assess temporal changes in anterior-posterior (A-P) knee laxity. However, the accuracy and precision of RSA is dependent on many factors and should be independently evaluated for a particular application. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of RSA for measuring A-P knee laxity. The specific aims were to assess the variation or "noise" inherent to RSA, to determine the reproducibility of RSA for repeated A-P laxity testing, and to assess the accuracy of these measurements. Two experiments were performed. The first experiment utilized three rigid models of the tibiofemoral joint to assess the noise and to compare digitization errors of two independent examiners. No differences were found in the kinematic outputs of the RSA due to examiner, repeated trials, or the model used. In a second experiment, A-P laxity values between the A-P shear load limits of +/-60 N of five cadaver goat knees were measured to assess the error associated with repeated testing. The RSA laxity values were also compared to those obtained from a custom designed linkage system. The mean A-P laxity values with the knee 30 degrees, 60 degrees, and 90 degrees of flexion for the ACL-intact goat knee (+/-95% confidence interval) were 0.8 (+/-0.25), 0.9 (+/-0.29), and 0.4 (+/-0.22) mm, respectively. In the ACL-deficient knee, the A-P laxity values increased by an order of magnitude to 8.8 (+/-1.39), 7.6 (+/-1.32), and 3.1 (+/-1.20)mm, respectively. No significant differences were found between the A-P laxity values measured by RSA and the independent measurement technique. A highly significant linear relationship (r(2)=0.83) was also found between these techniques. This study suggests that the RSA method is an accurate and precise means to measure A-P knee laxity for repeated testing over time.

In hanging and ligature strangulation, the noose mostly causes a mark or groove which is formed partly by compression of the skin and partly by abrasion with loss of the upper epidermal layers. The horny scales abraded from the neck may be transferred to the strangulation device or to the interposed textiles where they are sometimes visible at stereomicroscopic examination or even to the naked eye as silver-grey particles. The morphologic features of the epidermal transfer due to hanging and ligature strangulation is demonstrated by 14 case examples. The biological traces may be sufficient for comparative DNA typing by means of PCR-based methods. In 9 out of the 14 cases, genomic DNA typing was successful. Analysis of mtDNA succeeded in another two cases, although genomic DNA could not be detected. Beside the accumulation of solid epidermic particles the paper describes deposition of serous and fatty tissue fluid at the ligature (mainly adjacent to skin ridges).
