For thousands of years, plants have been utilized for medicinal purposes. For its naturally existing antibacterial properties, Nigella sativa is one of the most researched herbs. A study was conducted during rabi 2020-21 at The University of Haripur in order to evaluate the potential of ascorbic acid as plant growth enhancer. Two concentrations of ascorbic acid i-e 350 μm and 400 μm were sprayed along with control and water only spray on Nigella sativa crop. The study was arranged in RCBD two factor factorial arrangement. Factor A: ascorbic acid concentrations along with control and water spray, factor B: Growth stages (Stage1 = 40 days after sowing, Stage 2 = 80 DAS, Stage 3 = 120 DAS, Stage 4 = 40 + 80 DAS, Stage 5 = 40 + 120 DAS, Stage 6 = 80 + 120 DAS, Stage 7 = 40 + 80 + 120 DAS). Crop was sown in first week of November. Results reviled that chlorophyll b content, fixed oil content, 1000 seed weight, grain yield, Photosynthetic rate (μ mole m−2s−1), Transpiration rate (mmole m−2s−1), photosynthetic water use efficiency, Internal CO2 concentration (Ci) of leaf tissue and Stomatal conductance (mmole m−2s−1) were significantly affected by ascorbic acid concentrations and stage of application. Crop growth rate increased by 19.88% and 17.29%, chlorophyll b by 12.3% and 11.2%, fixed oil by 11.7% and 9%, grain yield by 10.29% and 9.8%, harvest index by 4% and 5.7% photosynthetic rate by 33%, 20% and stomatal conductance by 24.24% and 24.25 with application of ascorbic acid @ 350 μm, over control and water spray respectively. On the basis of these results it is concluded that application of ascorbic acid at the rate of 350 μm, followed by ascorbic acid at the rate of 400 μm significantly improves black cumin (Nigella sativa) yield and production. Hence it is recommended to apply ascorbic acid at the rate of 350 μm at 40 + 80+120 days after sowing of Nigella sativa crop for obtaining maximum results.

C4 plants show higher photosynthetic capacity and resource use efficiency than C3 plants. However, the genetic variations of these traits and their regulatory factors in C4 plants still remain to be resolved. We investigated physiological, biochemical, and structural traits involved in photosynthesis and photosynthetic water and nitrogen use efficiencies (PWUE and PNUE) in 22 maize lines and four teosinte lines from various regions of the world. Net photosynthetic rate (PN) ranged from 32.1 to 46.5 μmol m−2 s−1. PN was positively correlated with stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, and chlorophyll, nitrogen and soluble protein contents of leaves, but not with specific leaf weight. PN was positively correlated with the activities of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase and the C4-acid decarboxylases, NADP-malic enzyme and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase, but not with the activity of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase. Leaf structural traits (stomatal parameters, leaf thickness, and interveinal distance) were not correlated with PN. These data suggest that physiological and biochemical traits are involved in the genetic variation of PN, but structural traits are not directly involved. PWUE is in the lower class of values reported for C4 plants, whereas PNUE is in the highest class of values reported for C4 plants. PNUE was negatively correlated with leaf nitrogen content but not significantly correlated with PN. PWUE was not correlated with δ13C values of leaves, indicating difficulty in using δ13C values as an indicator of PWUE of maize. In general, teosinte lines showed lower PN but higher PWUE than maize lines.

However, which traits regulate the photosynthetic capacity of C4 plants remains unclear. We investigated structural, biochemical, and physiological traits associated with photosynthesis and resource use efficiency in 20 accessions of 12 species of Amaranthus, NAD-malic enzyme-type C4 dicots. Net photosynthetic rate (PN) ranged from 19.7 to 40.5 μmol m−2 s−1. PN was positively correlated with stomatal conductance and nitrogen and chlorophyll contents of leaves and was weakly positively correlated with specific leaf weight. PN was also positively correlated with the activity of the C3 enzyme ribulose-1,5-bisphoshate carboxylase/oxygenase, but not with the activities of the C4 enzymes phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase and NAD-malic enzyme. Structural traits of leaves (stomatal density, guard cell length, leaf thickness, interveinal distance, sizes of mesophyll and bundle sheath cells and the area ratio between these cells) were not significantly correlated with PN. These data suggest that some of the biochemical and physiological traits are involved in interspecific PN variation, whereas structural traits are not directly involved. Photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency ranged between 260 and 458 μmol mol−1 N s−1. Photosynthetic water use efficiency ranged between 5.6 and 10.4 mmol mol−1. When these data were compared with previously published data of C4 grasses, it is suggested that common mechanisms may determine the variations in resource use efficiency in grasses and this dicot group.

Abstract: Glasshouse experiments at two developmental stages (tuber initiation and tuber bulking) of potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) were conducted to investigate plant water relation and leaf gas exchange characteristics during progressive soil drying. Leaf relative water content (RWC), leaf water potential (Ψl), root water potential (Ψr), stomatal conductance (gs), photosynthesis (A), and xylem sap abscisic acid (ABA) concentration ([ABA]xylem) were determined in well-watered (WW) and drought-stressed (DS) plants. At both stages, RWC and Ψl were hardly affected, significant decreases of the two parameters occurred only at severe soil water deficits; however, gs decreased much early at 2 and 1 days after imposition of stress (DAIS) at tuber initiation and tuber bulking, respectively, and coincided with decrease of Ψr and increase of [ABA]xylem; while A decreased 2 days later than gs at each stage. Analyses of the pooled data of the two stages showed that gs was linearly correlated with [ABA]xylem at mild soil water deficits (i.e. Ψr>-0.3MPa); photosynthetic water use efficiency, viz. A/gs, increased linearly with decreasing gs until the latter reached 0.2molm-2s-1, below this point, it decreased sharply. The results suggest that at mild soil water deficits, gs of potato is seemingly controlled by xylem-borne ABA. As a consequence of A being less sensitive than gs to soil drying, photosynthetic water use efficiency, i.e. A/gs, is increased at mild soil water deficits. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

In a hypersaline mangrove scrub forest in northern Florida, coexisting trees of Laguncularia racemosa and Avicennia germinans were either fertilized with nitrogen or phosphorus, or not fertilized (controls). We aimed to test whether nutrient additions differentially altered photosynthetic performance and resource utilization in these two species. In control trees, photosynthetic rates were higher in L. racemosa than A. germinans. However, leaf nitrogen concentrations were higher in A. germinans than L. racemosa. Avicennia germinans responded to fertilization with nitrogen by increasing leaf nitrogen concentrations and rates of photosynthesis such that they were equivalent to photosynthesis in L. racemosa. Laguncularia racemosa did not show a response to nitrogen additions. Neither species showed strong responses to phosphorus fertilization. Avicennia germinans had high photosynthetic water-use efficiency (photosynthesis/transpiration), but low photosynthetic nitrogen-use efficiency (photosynthesis/leaf nitrogen). In contrast, L. racemosa had comparatively low photosynthetic water use efficiency and high photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency. Leaf level characteristics lead us to hypothesize that coexistence of A. germinans and L. racemosa should occur where nitrogen levels are low and salinity is moderate, or at least moderate for some period of the year.
