The decarbonylation addition reaction of phthalic anhydrides to alkynes is shown by using a nickel catalyst in association with a Lewis acid as a cocatalyst. The results have shown that reductive elimination is promoted by the addition of Zn[Cl.sub.2].

An experimental approach is designed for determining the fraction of free amine base in nonaqueous solvents and the mechanistic details are determined for the reaction of phthalic anhydride with aniline in glacial acetic acid solution. An optimum condition is determined for maximum yield of product N-phenylphthalamic acid.

The reaction between Zn(NO3)2.6H2O and 5-aminoisophthalic acid (aip) in a mixture of diethylformamide (DEF) and ethanol resulted in [Zn(C8H5NO4)(C5H11NO)](sub n) (CPO-8DEF). This compound of infinite 2D layers with tetrahedral Zn atoms and aip ligands in a triangular topology.

The condensation of Schiff bases with homophthalic anhydrides provides a mixture of cis- and trans-4-carboxy-3,4-dihydro-3-phenyl-1-(2H)isoquinolones. A route for conversion of the trans diastereomers to indenol[1,2-c]isoquinolines using selenoxide elimination and Friedel-Crafts cyclization chemistry is presented.
