The purpose of the present study was to identify the anthropometric and motor performance profile of futsal (indoor soccer) athletes in the second and third-placed teams in the Parana state championships (Brazil). Anthropometric (body mass, stature and skinfolds thickness) and motor performance (modified abdominal test, shuttle run, race of 30 m and 40 s) measures were obtained from twenty-seven male athletes (24.7 ± 6.4 years; 73.6 ± 7.6 kg; 174.8 ± 6.6 cm). For data analysis, athletes were grouped according to game positions. ANOVA one-way was used for comparisons between different positions, followed by Scheffé’s post hoc test, with p < 0.05. Signifi cant differences were detected in body mass (midfi elder < goalkeeper, p < 0.01), stature (midfielder < forward and goalkeeper, p < 0.01) and lean body mass (midfielder < goalkeeper, p < 0.01). No signifi cant differences in motor performance were detected between the athletes studied. The results of this study show that futsal athletes playing in different positions exhibit similar anthropometric and motor performance, in the majority of variables.

Multi-joint flexibility assessment seems to be more appropriate for analyzing the association between fl exibility and functional fitness, but there is a lack of studies to confi rm this possibility in elderly people. The present study investigated the relationship between a multiple joint fl exibility assessment and the functional performance of 30 independent and physically active elderly women (age=68±1yr). Flexibility was assessed using the Chair Sit-and-Reach Test (CSRT). Functional performance was tested by a combination of three tasks: a) Step Length (SL); b) Time to Put on Sneakers (TPS); c) Climbing Stairs (CS). The association between fl exibility and functional performance was tested by both simple and multiple correlation techniques. Pearson’s correlation was signifi cant for TPS (r = -.37; p ABSTRACT

Many health benefi ts are associated with physical activity level (PAL), but no standardized approaches to measurement exist, and comparisons and surveillance are problematic. The aim of this study was to verify the level ofagreement between the results of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ: short) and the Habitual Physical Activity Questionnaire (HPAQ) with true cardiorespiratory fi tness (VO2max), in order to classify young men and women ashaving PAL that is either adequate or inadequate for good health. A convenience sample was studied, composed of 105 young adults (43 male physical education students; 28 female physical education students; 34 males not studying physicaleducation). Both questionnaires were self-administered under the identical conditions. Values for VO2max were obtained using Cooper’s 12 min running test. Subjects were classifi ed as having PAL and VO2max that were adequate or inadequatefor good health. The cut off points used to defi ne adequate VO2max ≥44 ml/kg/min-1 for men and ≥33 ml/kg/min-1 for women. Agreement was assessed using a 2x2 contingency table. Percentage agreement ranged from 51.10% to 64.70% for theHPAQ and was 47.06% for the IPAQ. Agreement was higher for the HPAQ than for the IPAQ. Women overestimated their PAL by HPAQ and men underestimated their PAL by both questionnaires. The fi ndings of this study suggest that the HPAQ tends to be more accurate than the IPAQ.

Introduction: Children with poor motor performance, engage in less vigorous and organized activities, contributing to low scores in physical fi tness assessments. However, there is no consensus in the literature about the association between variables. Objective: Evaluate the relationship between motor performance and physical fi tness of students between 7 and 10 years old. Methods: Ninety-eight (98) students enrolled in a public school in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina State, Brazil, participated in this study. For motor evaluation, the Movement Assessment Battery for Children - Second Edition (MABC-2) was used; the assessment of physical fi tness was performed using the guidelines of the Brazil Sport Project (PROESP-BR). Data were tabulated in the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) for the descriptive statistical analysis (mean, standard deviation, frequency) and inferential analysis (Student's t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, and multiple linear regression test). The significance level was set at p < 0.05. Results: The values of the prevalence of motor difficulty and motor difficulty risk were 5.9% and 13.9%, respectively, and the value for without difficulty of movement was 80.2%. Differences were found for males in the agility tests and explosive strength of the lower limbs (p < 0.05), in which the boys with motor difficulty showed lower values. We noticed that abdominal strength, endurance, and agility significantly contributed to explain the variability in motor performance, which together showed a coefficient of determination (R?) of 0.13. Conclusion: Abdominal strength/endurance and agility contributed significantly in explaining the variability in motor performance. Thus, it is fundamental to encourage involvement in activities that contribute to the increase in motor repertoire reflecting physical fi tness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to compare the physical fi tness and quality of life related to the health of a sample population of older adult women from Spain and Serbia (60-69 years). A total of 127 female participants of physical fi tness programs from Spain (64.33±3.26) and Serbia (63.00±2.88) have participated. Physical fi tness (PF), quality of life (QoL) and sociodemographic characteristics were evaluated by Senior Fitness Test, SF-36 Health Survey and socio-demographic questionnaire, respectively. The anthropometric characteristic was measured by corporal measurement. The physical fi tness program comprised exercise of strength, agility and aerobic capacity, centering on the Pilates' program and Aerobic. Mean body mass index was 33.6±7.4 kg·m
-2 in the Spanish participants and 25.1±2.6 kg·m-2 from the Serbian participants (p<0.001). Similarly, mean waist circumference and body weight of Spanish women was higher than Serbian (p<0.001; p<0.05, respectively). Spanish women perceived lower quality of life dimensions than Serbian women, such as physical functioning, social functioning and general health (p<0.001), general health (p<0.01) and vitality (p<0.05). Serbian participants experienced higher physical fi tness, such as upper body fl exibility (p<0.05), lower body fl exibility, agility and aerobic endurance (p<0.001). In conclusion, Serbian women were found to have better levels of physical fi tness and quality of life than Spanish women. Furthermore, endurance fi tness has 73% of explained variance with age, body mass index and fat mass. Španjolske žene dimenzije kvalitete živote smatraju manjima nego srpske žene, poput tjelesnog funkcioniranja, socijalizacije i općeg zdravlja (p<0,001), opće zdravlje (p<0,01) i vitalnost (p<0,05). Srpske sudionice imale su veću tjelesnu kondiciju, poput fl eksibilnost gornjeg tijela (p<0,05), fl eksibilnost donjeg tijela, agilnosti i aerobne izdržljivosti (p<0.001). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Background: The increasing quality of cancer treatment and early detection of tumors have an impact on the number of patients who survive cancer treatment. Therefore, the attention of physicians as well as scientists is increasingly focused on the consequences of the treatment than just on the treatment itself. One of the ways to positively influence the side effects of oncological treatment seems to be physical activity., Methods: In our research, there were involved 18 women after breast cancer treatment, 17 completed the research (average values of the tested group: 55.9 years, 165.1cm, 76.9kg, body mass index (BMI) 28.3). The patients who signed informed consent were divided into 3 groups (SAPA = supervised exercises 3times a week, HAPA = home exercises 3times a week, and a control group without exercises). The whole intervention lasted 12 weeks and the exercise unit itself contained an aerobic-resistant component and a yoga component. During the exercise, the patients heart rate was monitored using a chest belt and sports testers. We used spiroergometry (peak oxygen uptake - VO2peak), bio-electric impedance, and spectral analysis of the heart rate variability to evaluate changes in the quality of life., Results: VO2peak increased in training groups by an average of 5ml/min/kg (P = 0.082). A similar tendency was evident in some body composition values (skeletal muscle: P = 0.005; fat free mass: P = 0.006). Statistical significance did not reach the values of BMI (P = 0.131) and autonomic nervous system (P = 0.513; P = 0.585)., Conclusion: Although our results suggest a positive trend in affecting the quality of life of patients after breast cancer treatment by exercises, similar research needs to be repeated in a larger study to confirm our results.

Background. Cardiovascular (CVD) risk factors have been shown to cluster in some children. This has been shown in children from the age of nine years, but recently we found no clustering in six-year old children. It is uncertain when clustering develops and which parameters are related to the development of clustered CVD risk. Methods. A longitudinal study including 484 children aged six years. Three years later, 434 children participated in a follow-up. The main outcome was clustering of five CVD risk factors: homeostasis assessment insulin resistance (HOMA), total cholesterol:HDL ratio, triglyceride (TG), systolic blood pressure and sum of four skinfolds. Independent variables were physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness. Results. CVD risk factors were independently distributed in the six-year-olds, and there was no association between composite risk factor score and physical fitness or activity even if there were obese and unfit children in the population. Clustering of CVD risk factors was found at the age of nine years, and the observed number with three or more CVD risk factors was 3.33 (95% CI: 1.41-7.87) times higher than expected if risk factors had been independently distributed. At the age of nine years, the lowest quartile of fitness had 34.9 (95% CI: 8.0-152.5) times higher risk of having clustered risk than the most fit quartile. Conclusion. Clustering of CVD risk factors developed between the age of six and nine years. At nine years of age clustered CVD risk was highly associated with low fitness level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: There is a lack of research about the relationship between exercise and the psychological well-being of HIV-infected (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) patients. Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of a physical training program on life satisfaction and on the immunological function in HIV-patients. Methods: A total of 29 HIV-seropositive patients [age: 45±2 yrs; Body Mass Index (BMI): 22.8±1.0 kg/m2; TCD4: 20.5±2.0%] were allocated to the control (CG, n=10) and to the experimental groups (EG, n=19). The EG participated in an exercise program combining aerobic, strength, and flexibility exercises for a period of 12 weeks [3 times/week of 30 min of aerobic exercise (workload corresponding to 150 bpm-PWC150); 50 min of strength exercises (3 sets of 12 repetitions in 5 exercises at 60-80% 12 RM); and 10 min of flexibility exercises (2 sets of 30 seconds at maximal range of motion of 8 exercises)]. The immunological function was assessed by flow citometry [absolute and relative TCD4 cells counting] and the life satisfaction was assessed by the Life Satisfaction Index (LSI). Results: The analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed no significant differences for relative and absolute CD4 T counts for both groups, however, a slight enhancement trend in the EG [16%, p=0.19] was observed. There was a significant improvement of LSI [approximately 15%; P<0.05] in EG, but not for CG. Conclusion: A physical activity program of moderate intensity improved life satisfaction perception in HIV-infected patients with no immunological function impairment. The goal of this study was the investigation of the relationship between 200 m performance and motor abilities and anthropometric characteristics of different level of male sprinters (200 m performance 23.80±2.16 s – the best results 21.40 s). The physical fi tness measures included: 50 m from standing and fl ying start, standing long jump (SLJ) standing fi ve jump (SFJ), double and single leg countermovement jumps CMJ), fl exibility (sit and reach) and 4 kg shot put throwing (over head). The Spearman correlation coeffi cient was applied to verify the association. The results demonstrated strong relationships (p < 0.05) between 200 m performance and experience (age) and body mass (r=0.85, r=–0.80 respectively.) As for the motor abilities strong relationship exists between 200 m and time of 150 m, 50 m from standing and fl ying start and CMJ on single leg. Vertical jumping displayed stronger relationship with 200 m performance that horizontal one. From a practical point of view this is very important notice.
