Decarbonizing the energy sector is one of the main challenges to combat the climate crisis. Cities play an important role to reach climate neutrality as more than 70% of global CO2 emissions originate from urban areas. Decarbonization of energy supply systems can be achieved through various means, including the use of renewable energy sources, improving the efficiency of technologies, the coupling of different energy sectors, and the use of flexibility considering individual prosumer behaviour. This leads to an increasingly decentralized energy system, which is challenging to operate in a robust and cost-effective way. The evaluation of technologies and subsystems can only be done from the perspective of the system in which it is embedded and it is highly dependent on their networking and application scenarios. Therefore, the design and operation of energy systems require adequate computation and evaluation tools, which offer a holistic view of all interconnected components. The currently available optimization tools have limitations, such as limited scope of technologies and sectors, high requirements on data, high computational cost, and difficulty in handling multi-objective optimization. To overcome these limitations a software framework called FOCUS for the flexible and dynamic modeling of any urban sector-coupled energy system is developed. The framework includes a library containing models for different technologies and offers a variety of parameter sets for each technology. FOCUS can handle multi-objective problems by returning Pareto-optimal fronts, which helps users to discover the trade-off between criteria and objectives. The developed tool can identify new flexibility potentials in the energy system, actively support companies in the respective field to optimize urban energy system planning solutions, and determine possible threads to the stable operation of such systems.

This is an Open Access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/), which permits unrestricted reuse, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited., We present the first very long baseline interferometric (VLBI) observations of the blazar OJ 287 carried out jointly with the Global Millimeter VLBI Array (GMVA) and the phased Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) at 3.5 mm on 2017 April 2. The participation of phased ALMA has not only improved the GMVA north–south resolution by a factor of ∼3, but has also enabled fringe detections with signal-to-noise ratios up to 300 at baselines longer than 2 Gλ. The high sensitivity has motivated us to image the data with newly developed regularized maximum likelihood imaging methods, revealing the innermost jet structure with unprecedentedly high angular resolution. Our images reveal a compact and twisted jet extending along the northwest direction, with two bends within the inner 200 μas, resembling a precessing jet in projection. The component at the southeastern end shows a compact morphology and high brightness temperature, and is identified as the VLBI core. An extended jet feature that lies at ∼200 μas northwest of the core shows a conical shape, in both total and linearly polarized intensity, and a bimodal distribution of the linear polarization electric vector position angle. We discuss the nature of this feature by comparing our observations with models and simulations of oblique and recollimation shocks with various magnetic field configurations. Our high-fidelity images also enabled us to search for possible jet features from the secondary supermassive black hole (SMBH) and test the SMBH binary hypothesis proposed for this source. © 2022. The characterization of exoplanet requires reliable determination of the fundamental parameters of their host stars. Spectral fitting plays an important role in this process. For the majority of stellar parameters matching synthetic spectra to the observations provides a robust and unique solution for fundamental parameters, such as effective temperature, surface gravity, abundances, radial and rotational velocities and others. Here we present a new software package for fitting high resolution stellar spectra that is easy to use, available for common platforms and free from commercial licenses. We call it PySME. It is based on the proven Spectroscopy Made Easy (later referred to as IDL SME or "original SME") package. The IDL part of the original SME code has been rewritten in Python, but we kept the efficient C++ and FORTRAN code responsible for molecular-ionization equilibrium, opacities and spectral synthesis. In the process we have updated some components of the optimization procedure offering more flexibility and better analysis of the convergence. The result is a more modern package with the same functionality of the original SME. We apply PySME to a few stars of different spectral types and compared the derived fundamental parameters with the results from IDL SME and other techniques. In particle-laden turbulence, the Fourier Lagrangian spectrum of each phase is regularly computed, and analytically derived response functions relate the Lagrangian spectrum of the fluid- and the particle phase. However, due to the periodic nature of the Fourier basis, the analysis is restricted to statistically stationary flows. In the present work, utilizing the bases of time-focalized proper orthogonal decomposition (POD), this analysis is extended to temporally non-stationary turbulence. Studying two-way coupled particle-laden decaying homogeneous isotropic turbulence for various Stokes numbers, it is demonstrated that the temporal POD modes extracted from the dispersed phase may be used for the expansion of both fluid- and particle velocities. The POD Lagrangian spectrum of each phase may thus be computed from the same set of modal building blocks, allowing the evaluation of response functions in a POD frame of reference. Based on empirical evaluations, a model for response functions in non-stationary flows is proposed. The related energies of the two phases is well approximated by simple analytical expressions dependent on the particle Stokes number. It is found that the analytical expressions closely resemble those derived through Fourier analysis of statistically stationary flows. These results suggest the existence of an inherent spectral symmetry underlying the dynamical systems consisting of particle-laden turbulence, a symmetry which spans across stationary/non-stationary particle-laden flow states., 11 pages, 10 Figures

Femtosecond transient soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a very promising technique that can be employed at X-ray free-electron lasers (FELs) to investigate out-of-equilibrium dynamics for material and energy research. Here, a dedicated setup for soft X-rays available at the Spectroscopy and Coherent Scattering (SCS) instrument at the European X-ray Free-Electron Laser (European XFEL) is presented. It consists of a beam-splitting off-axis zone plate (BOZ) used in transmission to create three copies of the incoming beam, which are used to measure the transmitted intensity through the excited and unexcited sample, as well as to monitor the incoming intensity. Since these three intensity signals are detected shot by shot and simultaneously, this setup allows normalized shot-by-shot analysis of the transmission. For photon detection, an imaging detector capable of recording up to 800 images at 4.5 MHz frame rate during the FEL burst is employed, and allows a photon-shot-noise-limited sensitivity to be approached. Skyrmions are prospected as the potential future of data storage due to their topologically protected spin structures. However, traditional ferromagnetic (FM) skyrmions experience deflection when driven with an electric current, hindering their usage in spintronics. Antiferromagnetic (AFM) skyrmions, consisting of two FM solitons coupled antiferromagnetically, are predicted to have a zero Magnus force, making them promising candidates for spintronic racetrack memories. Currently, they have been stabilized in synthetic AFM structures, i.e. multilayers hosting FM skyrmions, which couple antiferromagnetically through a non-magnetic spacer, while recent first-principles simulations predict their emergence in an intrinsic form, within an row-wise AFM single monolayer of Cr deposited on PdFe bilayer grown on Ir(111) surfaces. The latter material forms a triangular lattice, where single and interlinked AFM skyrmions can be stabilized. Here, we explore the minimal Heisenberg model enabling the occurrence of such AFM solitons and the underlying phase diagrams by accounting for the interplay between the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and Heisenberg exchange interactions, as well as the magnetic anisotropy and impact of magnetic field. By providing the fundamental basis to identify and understand the behavior of intrinsic AFM skyrmions, we anticipate our model to become a powerful tool for exploring and designing new topological magnetic materials to conceptualize devices for AFM spintronics., Comment: 21 pages, 3 figures

In two-qubit gates activated by microwave pulses, by turning pulse on or off, the state of qubits are swapped between entangled or idle modes. In either mode, the presence of stray couplings makes qubits accumulate coherent phase error. However, the error rates in the two modes differ because qubits carry different stray coupling strengths in each mode; therefore, eliminating stray coupling from one mode does not remove it from the other. We propose to combine such a gate with a tunable coupler and show that both idle and entangled qubits can become free from stray couplings. This significantly increases the operational switch fidelity in quantum algorithms. We further propose a weakly-tunable qubit as an optimum coupler to bring the two modes parametrically near each other. We analytically determine the distribution of fixed points in a canonical model of a chaotic neural network. This distribution reveals that fixed points and dynamics are confined to separate shells in phase space. Furthermore, the distribution enables us to determine the eigenvalue spectra of the Jacobian at the fixed points. Perhaps counter-intuitively, the velocity of the dynamics is strongly correlated with the direction imposed by the nearest fixed point despite the spatial separation. Interfacing a topological insulator (TI) with an $s$-wave superconductor (SC) is a promising material platform that offers the possibility to realize a topological superconductor through which Majorana-based topologically protected qubits can be engineered. In our computational study of the prototypical SC/TI interface between Nb and Bi$_2$Te$_3$, we identify the benefits and possible bottlenecks of this potential Majorana material platform. Bringing Nb in contact with the TI film induces charge doping from the SC to the TI, which shifts the Fermi level into the TI conduction band. For thick TI films, this results in band bending leading to the population of trivial TI quantum-well states at the interface. In the superconducting state, we uncover that the topological surface state experiences a sizable superconducting gap-opening at the SC/TI interface, which is furthermore robust against fluctuations of the Fermi energy. We also show that the trivial interface state is only marginally proximitized, potentially obstructing the realization of Majorana-based qubits in this material platform.

Anton., Ultra-high angular resolution in astronomy has always been an important vehicle for making fundamental discoveries. Recent results in direct imaging of the vicinity of the supermassive black hole in the nucleus of the radio galaxy M87 by the millimeter VLBI system Event Horizon Telescope and various pioneering results of the Space VLBI mission RadioAstron provided new momentum in high angular resolution astrophysics. In both mentioned cases, the angular resolution reached the values of about 10–20 microarcseconds (0.05–0.1 nanoradian). Further developments towards at least an order of magnitude “sharper” values, at the level of 1 microarcsecond are dictated by the needs of advanced astrophysical studies. The paper emphasis that these higher values can only be achieved by placing millimeter and submillimeter wavelength interferometric systems in space. A concept of such the system, called Terahertz Exploration and Zooming-in for Astrophysics, has been proposed in the framework of the ESA Call for White Papers for the Voyage 2050 long term plan in 2019. In the current paper we present new science objectives for such the concept based on recent results in studies of active galactic nuclei and supermassive black holes. We also discuss several approaches for addressing technological challenges of creating a millimeter/sub-millimeter wavelength interferometric system in space. In particular, we consider a novel configuration of a space-borne millimeter/sub-millimeter antenna which might resolve several bottlenecks in creating large precise mechanical structures. The paper also presents an overview of prospective space-qualified technologies of low-noise analogue front-end instrumentation for millimeter/sub-millimeter telescopes. Data handling and processing instrumentation is another key technological component of a sub-millimeter Space VLBI system. Requirements and possible implementation options for this instrumentation are described as an extrapolation of the current state-of-the-art Earth-based VLBI data transport and processing instrumentation. The paper also briefly discusses approaches to the interferometric baseline state vector determination and synchronisation and heterodyning system. The technology-oriented sections of the paper do not aim at presenting a complete set of technological solutions for sub-millimeter (terahertz) space-borne interferometers. Neural networks can implement arbitrary functions. But, mechanistically, what are the tools at their disposal to construct the target? For classification tasks, the network must transform the data classes into a linearly separable representation in the final hidden layer. We show that a feed-forward architecture has one primary tool at hand to achieve this separability: progressive folding of the data manifold in unoccupied higher dimensions. The operation of folding provides a useful intuition in low-dimensions that generalizes to high ones. We argue that an alternative method based on shear, requiring very deep architectures, plays only a small role in real-world networks. The folding operation, however, is powerful as long as layers are wider than the data dimensionality, allowing efficient solutions by providing access to arbitrary regions in the distribution, such as data points of one class forming islands within the other classes. We argue that a link exists between the universal approximation property in ReLU networks and the fold-and-cut theorem (Demaine et al., 1998) dealing with physical paper folding. Based on the mechanistic insight, we predict that the progressive generation of separability is necessarily accompanied by neurons showing mixed selectivity and bimodal tuning curves. This is validated in a network trained on the poker hand task, showing the emergence of bimodal tuning curves during training. We hope that our intuitive picture of the data transformation in deep networks can help to provide interpretability, and discuss possible applications to the theory of convolutional networks, loss landscapes, and generalization. Multilayer Laue lenses were used for the first time to focus x-rays from an X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL). In an experiment, which was performed at the European XFEL, we demonstrated focusing to a spot size of a few tens of nanometers. A series of runs in which the number of pulses per train was increased from 1 to 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 20 and 30 pulses per train, all with a pulse separation of 3.55 us, was done using the same set of lenses. The increase in the number of pulses per train was accompanied with an increase of x-ray intensity (transmission) from 9% to 92% at 5 pulses per train, and then the transmission was reduced to 23.5 % when the pulses were increased further. The final working condition was 30 pulses per train and 23.5% transmission. Only at this condition we saw that the diffraction efficiency of the MLLs changed over the course of a pulse train, and this variation was reproducible from train to train. We present the procedure to align and characterize these lenses and discuss challenges working with the pulse trains from this unique x-ray source.

One promising method to alleviate the sign problem is the transformation of the integration domain towards Lefschetz Thimbles. Unfortunately, this suffers from poor scaling originating in numerically integrating of flow equations and evaluation of an induced Jacobian. In this proceedings we present a new preliminary Neural Network architecture based on complex-valued affine coupling layers. This network performs such a transformation efficiently, ultimately allowing simulation of systems with a severe sign problem. Ionic liquids (ILs) are important solvents for sustainable processes and predicting activity coefficients (ACs) of solutes in ILs is needed. Recently, matrix completion methods (MCMs), transformers, and graph neural networks (GNNs) have shown high accuracy in predicting ACs of binary mixtures, superior to well-established models, e.g., COSMO-RS and UNIFAC. GNNs are particularly promising here as they learn a molecular graph-to-property relationship without pretraining, typically required for transformers, and are, unlike MCMs, applicable to molecules not included in training. For ILs, however, GNN applications are currently missing. Herein, we present a GNN to predict temperature-dependent infinite dilution ACs of solutes in ILs. We train the GNN on a database including more than 40,000 AC values and compare it to a state-of-the-art MCM. The GNN and MCM achieve similar high prediction performance, with the GNN additionally enabling high-quality predictions for ACs of solutions that contain ILs and solutes not considered during training., 16 pages, 4 figures, 5 tables

We present results from the global electroweak fit to precision measurements in the Standard Model (SM). The fit uses the latest theoretical calculations for observables on the $Z$ pole and the $W$ boson mass, yielding precise SM predictions for the effective weak mixing angle and the masses of the $W$ and Higgs bosons, as well as the top quark. The outgoing photoelectron leaves behind the cation in a coherent superposition of quantum mechanical eigenstates. Delayed x-ray pulses track the induced coherence through resonant x-ray absorption that induces Auger decay and by photoelectron emission from sequential double photoionization. Sinusoidal temporal modulation of the detected signal at early times (0-25 fs) is observed in both measurements. Advanced ab initio many-electron simulations allow us to explain the first 25 fs of the detected coherent quantum evolution in terms of the electronic coherence. In the kinematically complete x-ray absorption measurement we monitor its dynamics for a period of 175 fs and observe an evolving modulation that may implicate the coupling of electronic to vibronic coherence at longer time scales. We present an improved measurement of the CNO solar neutrino interaction rate at Earth obtained with the complete Borexino Phase-III dataset. The measured rate R$_{\rm CNO}$ = $6.7^{+2.0}_{-0.8}$ counts/(day$ \cdot$ 100 tonnes), allows us to exclude the absence of the CNO signal with about 7$\sigma$ C.L. The correspondent CNO neutrino flux is $6.6^{+2.0}_{-0.9} \times 10^8$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, taking into account the neutrino flavor conversion. We use the new CNO measurement to evaluate the C and N abundances in the Sun with respect to the H abundance for the first time with solar neutrinos. Our result of $N_{\rm CN}$ = $(5.78^{+1.86}_{-1.00})\times10^{-4}$ displays a $\sim$2$\sigma$ tension with the "low metallicity" spectroscopic photospheric measurements. On the other hand, our result used together with the $^7$Be and $^8$B solar neutrino fluxes, also measured by Borexino, permits to disfavour at 3.1$\sigma$ C.L. the "low metallicity" SSM B16-AGSS09met as an alternative to the "high metallicity" SSM B16-GS98., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

To accelerate the electron beam to an energy of 4 GeV, 280 TESLA type superconducting RF (SRF) cavities are used. A quality factor $(𝑄_𝐿 )$ of $4×10^7$ is used to drive the cavities at a power level of a few kilowatts. For this $𝑄_𝐿$ , the RF cavity bandwidth is 32 Hz. Therefore, keeping the cavity resonance frequency within such bandwidth is imperative to avoid a significant increase in the required drive power. In superconducting accelerators, resonance frequency variations are produced by mechanical microphonic vibrations of the cavities. One source of microphonic noise is rotary machinery such as vacuum pumps or HVAC equipment. A possible method to reject these disturbances is to use Narrowband Active Noise Control (NANC) techniques. Such a technique was already tested at DESY/CMTB [1] and Cornell/CBETA [2].This proceeding presents the implementation of a NANC controller adapted to the LCLS-II Low Level RF (LLRF) control system. Understanding the functional principles of information processing in deep neural networks continues to be a challenge, in particular for networks with trained and thus non-random weights. To address this issue, we study the mapping between probability distributions implemented by a deep feed-forward network. We characterize this mapping as an iterated transformation of distributions, where the non-linearity in each layer transfers information between different orders of correlation functions. This allows us to identify essential statistics in the data, as well as different information representations that can be used by neural networks. Applied to an XOR task and to MNIST, we show that correlations up to second order predominantly capture the information processing in the internal layers, while the input layer also extracts higher-order correlations from the data. The heavy-ion superconducting synchrotron SIS100, currently under construction at GSI, should provide intense beams for the future FAIR experiments. Using SIS100 as an example, this paper develops a quantitative framework for characterizing the half-integer stop band for realistic, Gaussian-like distributed bunched beams. This study identifies the tune areas affected by the gradient-error-induced half-integer resonance for varying space charge strengths. A key insight of our analysis is that, for bunched beams a relatively small gradient error can result in a large half-integer stop band width. The achievable maximum bunch intensity, often referred to as space charge limit, is thus reduced significantly. This contrasts the findings in existing studies in literature based on more simplified beam distributions. The reason for discrepancy is identified in the increasing stop band width for Gaussian distributions when space charge becomes stronger, which appears on longer time scales as relevant for synchrotrons. The role of synchrotron motion in providing continuous emittance growth across the bunch is scrutinized. To minimize the half-integer stop band for a bunched beam, and hence increase the space charge limit, lattice corrections are applied: Including space charge in the optimization procedure recovers results equivalent to conventional lattice correction. The potential of a combined ozone O3 ultraviolet (UV) light reactor for gas-phase oxidation of flue gas pollutants has been evaluated in this work. For this, numerical simulations of a continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR) have been performed for the analysis of sulfur dioxide SO2 removal. Chemical kinetics have been coupled with modeling of the radiation intensity distribution produced by a UV lamp with five different radiation models. A grid convergence study and an optimization of the number of discrete point light sources employed for some of the radiation models was carried out. The effect of residence time and reactor size on the removal of SO2 have also been analyzed. Overall, results for the abatement of SO2 in an O3-UV reactor under optimized conditions suggest that this approach is suitable for sustainable air cleaning applications.

Lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) material has great potential for photonic integrated circuits, providing substantial versatility in design of various integrated components. To properly use these components in the implementation of different quantum protocols, photons with different properties are required. In this paper, we theoretically demonstrate a flexible source of correlated photons built on the LNOI waveguide with a special geometry. This source is based on the parametric down-conversion (PDC) process, in which the signal and idler photons are generated at the telecom wavelength and have different spatial profiles and polarizations, but the same group velocities. Distinguishability in polarizations and spatial profiles facilitates the routing and manipulating individual photons, while the equality of their group velocities leads to the absence of temporal walk-off between photons. We show how the spectral properties of the generated photons and the number of their frequency modes can be controlled depending on the pump characteristics and the waveguide length. Finally, we discuss special regimes, in which narrowband light with strong frequency correlations and polarization-entangled Bell states are generated at the telecom wavelength.

We have deduced the structure of the \ce{bromobenzene}--\ce{I2} heterodimer and the \ce{(bromobenzene)2} homodimer inside helium droplets using a combination of laser-induced alignment, Coulomb explosion imaging, and three-dimensional ion imaging. The complexes were fixed in a variety of orientations in the laboratory frame, then in each case multiply ionized by an intense laser pulse. A three dimensional ion imaging detector, including a Timepix3 detector allowed us to measure the correlations between velocity vectors of different fragments and, in conjunction with classical simulations, work backward to the initial structure of the complex prior to explosion. For the heterodimer, we find that the \ce{I2} molecular axis intersects the phenyl ring of the bromobenzene approximately perpendicularly. The homodimer has a stacked parallel structure, with the two bromine atoms pointing in opposite directions. These results illustrate the ability of Coulomb explosion imaging to determine the structure of large complexes, and point the way toward real-time measurements of bimolecular reactions inside helium droplets.

Phys. 393, 781-838 (2022). doi:10.1007/s00220-022-04376-z, We introduce and study tetrahedron instantons, which can be realized in string theory by D$1$-branes probing a configuration of intersecting D$7$-branes in flat spacetime with a proper constant $B$-field. Physically they capture instantons on $\mathbb{C}^{3}$ in the presence of the most general intersecting real codimension-two supersymmetric defects. Moreover, we construct the tetrahedron instantons as particular solutions of general instanton equations in noncommutative field theory. We analyze the moduli space of tetrahedron instantons and discuss the geometric interpretations. We compute the instanton partition function both via the equivariant localization on the moduli space of tetrahedron instantons and via the elliptic genus of the worldvolume theory on the D$1$-branes probing the intersecting D$7$-branes, obtaining the same result. The instanton partition function of the tetrahedron instantons lies between the higher-rank Donaldson-Thomas invariants on $\mathbb{C}^{3}$ and the partition function of the magnificent four model, which is conjectured to be the mother of all instanton partition functions. Finally, we show that the instanton partition function admits a free field representation, suggesting the existence of a novel kind of symmetry which acts on the cohomology of the moduli spaces of tetrahedron instantons., Published by Springer

Double logarithmic contributions of the type $(\alpha_s \ln ^2 (1/x))^k$ which are not included in the GLAP evolution equations are shown to give a stronger rise at small-x than the extrapolation of the GLAP expressions. Further enhancement in the small-x region is due to non-ladder Feynman graphs which in the DLA of the unpolarized structure functions do not contribute. Compared to the conventional GLAP method (where neither the whole kinematical region which gives the double logs nor the non-ladder graphs are taken into account) our results lead to a growth at small-x which, for HERA parameters, can be larger by up to factor of 10 or more., Published by Springer, Heidelberg
