We analyze the mathematical model that describes the heat generated by electromagnetic nanoparticles. We use the known optical properties of the nanoparticles to control the support and amount of the heat needed around a nanoparticle. Precisely, we show that the dominant part of the heat around the nanoparticle is the electric field multiplied by a constant dependent, explicitly and only, on the permittivity and quantities related to the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Magnetization (or the Newtonian) operator, defined on the nanoparticle, and inversely proportional to the distance to the nanoparticle. The nanoparticles are described via the Lorentz model. If the used incident frequency is chosen related to the plasmonic frequency $\omega_p$ (via the Magnetization operator) then the nanoparticle behaves as a plasmonic one while if it is chosen related to the undamped resonance frequency $\omega_0$ (via the Newtonian operator), then it behaves as a dielectric one. The two regimes exhibit different optical behaviors. In both cases, we estimate the generated heat and discuss advantages of each incident frequency regime. The analysis is based on time-domain integral equation techniques avoiding the use of (formal) Fourier type transformations.

We report the magnitude of the induced magnetic moment in CVD-grown epitaxial and rotated-domain graphene in proximity with a ferromagnetic Ni film, using polarized neutron reflectivity (PNR) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The XMCD spectra at the C K-edge confirms the presence of a magnetic signal in the graphene layer and the sum rules give a magnetic moment of up to $\sim\,0.47\,\mu$_B/C atom induced in the graphene layer. For a more precise estimation, we conducted PNR measurements. The PNR results indicate an induced magnetic moment of $\sim$ 0.53 $\mu$_B/C atom at 10 K for rotated graphene and $\sim$ 0.38 $\mu$_B/C atom at 10 K for epitaxial graphene. Additional PNR measurements on graphene grown on a non-magnetic Ni_9Mo_1 substrate, where no magnetic moment in graphene is measured, suggest that the origin of the induced magnetic moment is due to the opening of the graphene's Dirac cone as a result of the strong C pz-3d hybridization., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures

This paper proposes an efficient boundary-integral based "windowed Green function" methodology (WGF) for the numerical solution of three-dimensional electromagnetic problems containing dielectric waveguides. The approach, which generalizes a two-dimensional version of the method introduced recently, provides a highly effective solver for general electromagnetic problems containing waveguides. In particular, using an auxiliary integral representation, the proposed method is able to accurately model incident mode excitation. On the basis of a smooth window function, the integral operators along the infinite waveguide boundaries are smoothly truncated, resulting in errors that decay faster than any negative power of the window size.

A simple and accurate method based on degenerate four-wave mixing (FWM) to evaluate optical fiber dispersion and nonlinearity is presented. We investigated the continuous wave degenerate FWM characteristics of two photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) and a SMF28 fiber. Simply by measuring and analyzing the continuous wave degenerate FWM conversion efficiency as a function of the wavelength difference between pump and signal waves, fitting between experimental data and analytical FWM conversion efficiency expression is carried out to determine the dispersion, dispersion slope and nonlinear coefficient of the fiber. The fiber parameters simultaneously obtained from a single set of FWM measurement for Single Mode Fiber 28 (SMF28) are found to be agreement with the manufacturer specifications for this fiber, thus validating the PCF results and, more generally, the acceptable accuracy of the simple method proposed here.

The feasibility of a 220 - 330 GHz zero order axicon generated Bessel beam for corneal water content was explored. Simulation and experimental data from the 25-degree cone angle hyperbolic-axicon lens illuminating metallic spherical targets demonstrate a monotonically decreasing, band integrated, backscatter intensity for increasing radius of curvature from 7 - 11 mm, when lens reflector and optical axis are aligned. Further, for radii >= 9.5 mm, maximum signal was obtained with a 1 mm transverse displacement between lens and reflector optical axes arising from spatial correlation between main lobe and out of phase side lobes. Thickness and permittivity parameter estimation experiments were performed on an 8 mm radius of curvature, 1 mm thick fused quartz dome over a 10 mm axial span. Extracted thickness and permittivity varied by less than ~ 25 $μ$m and 0.2 respectively after correction for superluminal velocity. Polymer bonded explosives (PBXs) have high energy density, excellent mechanical properties and better thermal stability. In this study, droplet microfluidic technology was used to successfully prepare HMX/TATB microspheres. The effects of different binder types and binder concentrations on the morphology of the microspheres were studied, and results proved that NC/GAP (1:4) provides particles a regular spherical morphology and good dispersion. Subsequently, the influence of the concentration of the dispersed phase and the flow rate of the continuous phase on the particle size distribution of the microspheres was fully studied. The microspheres had narrow particle size distribution and high spherical shape. Under optimized process conditions, HMX/TATB microspheres were prepared and compared with the physical mixtures. The X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, flow properties, bulk density, and mechanical sensitivity of the samples were also studied. Results showed that the crystal form of the microspheres remains unchanged, and the binder maintains good compatibility with explosives. In addition, the fluidity, bulk density, real density and safety performance of the microspheres are remarkably better than the physical mixture. This study provides a new method for preparing PBX with narrow particle size distribution, high spherical shape, excellent dispersion and high bulk density.

Spatial modulation of electron beams is an essential tool for various applications such as nanolithography and imaging1–3 , yet its implementations4–11 are severely limited and inherently non-tunable. Conversely, light-driven electron spatial modulation12–15 could potentially allow arbitrary electron wavefront shaping16–18 via the underlying mechanism of photon-induced nearfield electron microscopy (PINEM)19–21 . Here, we present tunable photon-induced spatial modulation of electrons through their externally-controlled interaction with surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). Using recently developed methods of shaping SPP patterns 22,23, we demonstrate a dynamic control of the electron beam with a variety of high-quality electron distributions. Intriguingly, by utilizing the intrinsic interaction nonlinearity24, we attain the first observation of 2D spatial Rabi oscillations25,26 and generate electron features below the SPP wavelength. Our work paves the way to on-demand electron wavefront shaping at ultrafast timescales, with prospects for aberration correction, nano-fabrication and material characterization., The results supporting the findings of this articles have received additional fundings from the Israel Science Foundation grants 3334/19 and 831/19

As standard microelectronic technology approaches fundamental limitations in speed and power consumption, novel computing strategies are strongly needed. Analog optical computing enables processing large amounts of data at a negligible energy cost and high speeds. Based on these principles, ultrathin optical metasurfaces have been recently explored to process large images in real-time, in particular for edge detection. By incorporating feedback, it has also been recently shown that metamaterials can be tailored to solve complex mathematical problems in the analog domain, although these efforts have so far been limited to guided-wave systems and bulky setups. Here, we present an ultrathin Si metasurface-based platform for analog computing that is able to solve Fredholm integral equations of the second kind using free-space visible radiation. A Si-based metagrating was inverse-designed to implement the scattering matrix synthesizing a prescribed Kernel corresponding to the mathematical problem of interest. Next, a semi-transparent mirror was incorporated into the sample to provide adequate feedback and thus perform the required Neumann series, solving the corresponding equation in the analog domain at the speed of light. Visible wavelength operation enables a highly compact, ultrathin device that can be interrogated from free-space, implying high processing speeds and the possibility of on-chip integration.

Given the flexibility of choosing negative elastic parameters, we construct material structures that can induce two resonance phenomena, referred to as the elastodynamical resonances. They mimic the emerging plasmon/polariton resonance and anomalous localized resonance in optics for subwavelength particles. However, we study the peculiar resonance phenomena for linear elasticity beyond the subwavelength regime. It is shown that the resonance behaviours possess distinct characters, with some similar to the subwavelength resonances, but some sharply different due to the frequency effect. It is particularly noted that we construct a core-shell material structure that can induce anomalous localized resonance as well as cloaking phenomena beyond the quasi-static limit. The study is boiled down to analyzing the so-called elastic Neumann-Poinc\'are (N-P) operator in the frequency regime. We provide an in-depth analysis of the spectral properties of the N-P operator beyond the quasi-static approximation,and these results are of independent interest to the spectral theory of layer potential operators.

In this paper, we introduce the Laguerre bounded variation space and the Laguerre perimeter, thereby investigating their properties. Moreover, we prove the isoperimetric inequality and the Sobolev inequality in the Laguerre setting. As applications, we derive the mean curvature for the Laguerre perimeter., In this paper we systematicallyinvestigate the theory of the Laguerre bounded variation space. This paper presents performance of gallium arsenide (GaAs) light emitting diode (GaAsLED) for wireless systems such as mobile communication system. Due to the fact mobile communication systems require effective signal transmission it is possible to aid with quantum photonic devices such as light emitting diodes at the transmitting ends which can provide effective and efficient photons transmission from one base station (BS) to another base station through the optical link under ground surface. At the receiving end the photons in the form of light are fed into a photodetector for further information processing as electrical signals. Simulation results portray the current-voltage characteristics of quantum photonic device namely GaAs LED for various scenarios. Further, the bit error rate performance analysis of GaAsLED cellular system is analysed in indoor and outdoor fading channels. The obtained results could be used for the implementation of 5G systems in mobile wireless systems.

Semiconductor Quantum Dots have unique properties, such as the quantum size effect that provide the breakthrough in optoelectronic devices. The small effective mass of electron and hole open-up an avenue of wide bandgap tunability in InAs Quantum Dots (QDs), making them an attractive material for solar cell application. Therein, 4x4 Luttinger Kohn Hamiltonian method is used to calculate the absorption co-efficient of epitaxially grown InAs QDs. Further, we studied the size-dependent absorption co-efficient and the barrier material model of InAs QDs capping with InP and GaAs. Our theoretical simulation predicts the efficiency of InAs/GaAs and InAs/InP system in the intrinsic layer of p-i-n structure solar cells.

Photonic balls are spheres tens of micrometers in diameter containing assemblies of nanoparticles or nanopores with a spacing comparable to the wavelength of light. When these nanoscale features are disordered, but still correlated, the photonic balls can show structural color with low angle-dependence. Their colors, combined with the ability to add them to a liquid formulation, make photonic balls a promising new type of pigment particle for paints, coatings, and other applications. However, it is challenging to predict the color of materials made from photonic balls, because the sphere geometry and multiple scattering must be accounted for. To address these challenges, we develop a multiscale modeling approach involving Monte Carlo simulations of multiple scattering at two different scales: we simulate multiple scattering and absorption within a photonic ball and then use the results to simulate multiple scattering and absorption in a film of photonic balls. After validating against experimental spectra, we use the model to show that films of photonic balls scatter light in fundamentally different ways than do homogeneous films of nanopores or nanoparticles, because of their increased surface area and refraction at the interfaces of the balls. Both effects tend to sharply reduce color saturation relative to a homogeneous nanostructured film. We show that saturated colors can be achieved by placing an absorber directly in the photonic balls and mitigating surface roughness. With these design rules, we show that photonic-ball films have an advantage over homogeneous nanostructured films: their colors are even less dependent on the angle.

The Möbius strip, a fascinating loop structure with one-sided topology, provides a rich playground for manipulating the non-trivial topological behaviour of spinning particles, such as electrons, polaritons and photons, in both real and parameter spaces. For photons resonating in a Möbius-strip cavity, the occurrence of an extra phase—known as the Berry phase—with purely topological origin is expected due to its non-trivial evolution in parameter space. However, despite numerous theoretical investigations, characterizing the optical Berry phase in a Möbius-strip cavity has remained elusive. Here we report the experimental observation of the Berry phase generated in optical Möbius-strip microcavities. In contrast to theoretical predictions in optical, electronic and magnetic Möbius-topology systems where only Berry phase π occurs, we demonstrate that a variable Berry phase smaller than π can be acquired by generating elliptical polarization of resonating light. Möbius-strip microcavities as integrable and Berry-phase-programmable optical systems are of great interest in topological physics and emerging classical or quantum photonic applications.

In this paper, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrated photothermal nonlinearities of both forward and backward scattering intensities from quasi-perfect absorbing silicon-based metasurface with only λ/7 thickness. The metasurface is efficiently heated up by photothermal effect under laser irradiation, which in turn modulates the scattering spectra via thermo-optical effect. Under a few milliwatt continuous-wave excitation at the resonance wavelength of the metasurface, backward scattering cross-section doubles, and forward scattering cross-section reduces to half. Our study opens up the all-optical dynamical control of the scattering directionality, which would be applicable to silicon photonic devices.

For single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with a length of 1-50 nm, the surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) resonance is within the terahertz frequency range; therefore, SWCNT lattices can be used to design frequency-selective surface (FSS). The numerical model of electromagnetic wave diffraction on a two-dimensional periodic SWCNT lattice can be described by an integro-differential equation of the second-order with respect to the surface current along SWCNT. The equation can be solved by the Bubnov-Galerkin method. Frequency dependence of reflecting and transmitting electromagnetic waves for FSSs near the SPP resonance are studied numerically. It is shown that the resonances are within the lower-frequency part of the terahertz range. Also, we estimate the relaxation frequency of an individual SWCNT and demonstrate the applicability of the Kubo formula for graphene conductivity to array of strips similar in size with SWCNTs under consideration., Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures

There is today a growing need to accurately model the angular scattering response of metasurfaces for optical analog processing applications. However, the current metasurface modeling techniques are not well suited for such a task since they are limited to small angular spectrum transformations, as shall be demonstrated. The goal of this work is to overcome this limitation by improving the modeling accuracy of these techniques and, specifically, to provide a better description of the angular response of metasurfaces. This is achieved by extending the current methods, which are restricted to dipolar responses and weak spatially dispersive effects, so as to include quadrupolar responses and higher-order spatially dispersive components. The accuracy of the newly derived multipolar model is demonstrated by predicting the angular scattering of a dielectric metasurface placed in a vacuum. This results in a modeling accuracy that is substantially better than the standard dipolar model.

We analyze the inversion of the photo-acoustic imaging modality using electromagnetic plasmonic nano-particles as contrast agents. We prove that the generated pressure, before and after injecting the plasmonic nano-particles, measured at a single point, located away from the targeted inhomogeneity to image, and at a given band of incident frequencies is enough to reconstruct the (eventually complex valued) permittivity. Indeed, from these measurements, we define an indicator function which depends on the used incident frequency and the time of measurement. This indicator function has differentiating behaviors in terms of both time and frequency. First, from the behavior in terms of time, we can estimate the arrival time of the pressure from which we can localize the injected nano-particle. Second, we show that this indicator function has maximum picks at incident frequencies close to the plasmonic resonances. This allows us to estimate these resonances from which we construct the permittivity. To justify these properties, we derive the dominant electric field created by the injected nano-particle when the incident frequency is close to plasmonic resonances. This is done for the full Maxwell system. To this end, we use a natural spectral decomposition of the vector space (L^2(D))^3 based on the spectra of the Newtonian and the Magnetization operators. As another key argument, we provide the singularity analysis of the Green's tensor of the Maxwell problem with varying permittivity. Such singularity is unusual if compared to the ones of the elliptic case (as the acoustic or elastic models). In addition, we show how the derived approximation of the electric fields propagates, as a source, in the induced pressure with the time.

Understanding and controlling the interaction between the excitonic states of a quantum emitter and the plasmonic modes of a nanocavity is one of the most relevant current scientific challenges, key for the development of many applications, from quantum information processing devices to polaritonic catalysts. In this paper we demonstrate that the tunnel electroluminescence of C60 nanocrystals enclosed in the plasmonic nanocavity between a metallic surface and the tip of a Scanning Tunnelling Microscope, and isolated from the metal surface by a thin NaCl film, can be switched from a broad emission spectrum, revealing the plasmonic modes of the cavity, to a narrow band emission, displaying only the excitonic states of the C60 molecules by changing the bias voltage applied to the junction. Plasmonic emission is found in the same voltage region in which the rate of inelastic tunnel transitions is large and, thus, vanishes for large voltages. Excitonic emission, on the other hand, dominates the spectra in the high-voltage region in which the inelastic rate is low, demonstrating that the excitons cannot be created by an inelastic tunnel process. These results point towards new possible mechanisms to explain the tunnel electroluminescence of quantum emitters and offer new avenues to develop electrically tuneable nanoscale light sources.

We study spectral singularities of an infinite planar slab of homogeneous optically active material in focus of a thin lens under illumination of a Gaussian beam. We describe the field distribution of the Gaussian beam under this configuration as a plane wave propagated near the optical axis which its phase and amplitude vary with distance from center of the beam. Based on this approximation, we carry out the transfer matrix for the slab. We explore the consequences of this configuration on determining the threshold gain of the active medium and tuning the resonance frequencies related to spectral singularities. We show that the spectral singularities and the threshold gain besides that vary with distance from center of the Gaussian beam, also they change with relative aperture of the focusing lens. As a result, using a thin lens with higher relative aperture, the spectral singularities corresponding resonances shift to the higher frequencies (lower wavelengths). When sources of energy gain and loss are introduced to a wave-scattering system, the underlying mathematical formulation will be non-Hermitian. This paves the way for the existence of exceptional points, where eigenmodes are linearly dependent. The primary goal of this work is to study the existence of exceptional points in high-contrast subwavelength metamaterials. We begin by studying a parity-time-symmetric pair of subwavelength resonators and prove that this system supports asymptotic exceptional points. These are points at which the subwavelength eigenvalues and eigenvectors coincide at leading order in the asymptotic parameters. We then investigate further properties of parity-time-symmetric subwavelength metamaterials. First, we study the exotic scattering behaviour of a metascreen composed of repeating parity-time-symmetric pairs of subwavelength resonators. We prove that the non-Hermitian nature of this structure means that it exhibits asymptotic unidirectional reflectionless transmission at certain frequencies and demonstrate extraordinary transmission close to these frequencies. Ultrafast laser pump-probe spectroscopy is an important and growing field of physical chemistry that allows the measurement of chemical dynamics on their natural timescales, but undergraduate laboratory courses lack examples of such spectroscopy and the interpretation of the dynamics that occur. Here we develop and implement an ultrafast pump probe spectroscopy experiment for the undergraduate physical chemistry laboratory course at the University of California Berkeley. The goal of the experiment is to expose students to concepts in solid-state chemistry and ultrafast spectroscopy via classic coherent phonon dynamics principles developed by researchers over multiple decades. The experiment utilizes a modern high-repetition-rate 800 nm femtosecond Ti:Sapphire laser, split pulses with a variable time delay, and sensitive detection of transient reflectivity signals using the lock-in technique. The experiment involves minimal intervention from students and is therefore easy and safe to implement in the laboratory. Students first perform an intensity autocorrelation measurement on the femtosecond laser pulses to obtain their temporal duration. Then, students measure the pump-probe reflectivity of a single-crystal antimony sample to determine the period of coherent phonon oscillations initiated by an ultrafast pulse excitation, which is analyzed by fitting to a sine wave. Students who completed the experiment in-person obtained good experimental results, and students who took the course remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic were provided with the data they would have obtained during the experiment to analyze. Evaluation of student written and oral reports reveals that the learning goals were met, and that students gained an appreciation for the field of ultrafast laser-induced chemistry.

The optical responses of metals are often dominated by plasmonic resonances, that is, the collective oscillations of interacting electron liquids. Here we unveil a new class of plasmons─quantum metric plasmons (QMPs)─that arise in a wide range of parity-violating magnetic metals. In these materials, a dipolar distribution of the quantum metric (a fundamental characteristic of Bloch wave functions) produces intrinsic nonreciprocal bulk plasmons. Strikingly, QMP nonreciprocity manifests even when the single-particle dispersion is symmetric: QMPs are sensitive to time-reversal and parity violations hidden in the Bloch wave function. In materials with asymmetric single-particle dispersions, quantum metric dipole induced nonreciprocity can continue to dominate at large frequencies. We anticipate that QMPs can be realized in a wide range of parity-violating magnets, including twisted bilayer graphene heterostructures, where quantum geometric quantities can achieve large values. The bandwidth and energy demands of neural networks has spurred tremendous interest in developing novel neuromorphic hardware, including photonic integrated circuits. Although an optical waveguide can accommodate hundreds of channels with THz bandwidth, the channel count of photonic systems is always bottlenecked by the devices within. In WDM-based photonic neural networks, the synapses, i.e. network interconnections, are typically realized by microring resonators (MRRs), where the WDM channel count (N) is bounded by the free-spectral range of the MRRs. Optical vortices host the orbital nature of photons, which offers an extra degree of freedom in photonic applications. Unlike vortices in other physical entities, optical vortices require structural singularities, which restrict their abilities in terms of dynamic and interactive characteristics. In this study, we present the spontaneous generation and external magnetic field-induced manipulation of an optical vortex and antivortex. A gradient-thickness optical cavity (GTOC) consisting of an Al/SiO2/Ni/SiO2 multilayer structure realised the distinct transition between the trivial and non-trivial topological phases, depending on the magneto-optic effects of the Ni layer. In the non-trivial topological phase, the mathematical singularities generating the optical vortex and antivortex pair in the reflected light existed in the generalised parameter space of the thicknesses of the top and bottom SiO2 layers, which is bijective to the real space of the GTOC. Coupled with the magnetisation, the optical vortex and antivortex in the GTOC experienced an effective spin-orbit interaction and showed topology-dependent dynamics under external magnetic fields. We expect that field-induced engineering of optical vortices will pave the way for the study of topological photonic interactions and their applications., 22 pages, 4 figures

Electrothermal metasurfaces have attracted extensive attention due to their ability to dynamically control thermal infrared radiation. Although previous studies were mainly focused on the metasurfaces with infinite unit cells, the finite-size effect can be a critical design factor for developing thermal metasurfaces with fast response and broad temperature uniformity in practice. Here, we study the thermal metasurfaces consisting of gold nanorods with a finite array size, which, with only several periods, can achieve a resonance close to that of the infinite case. More importantly, such a small footprint due to the finite array size results in the response time down to a nanosecond level. Furthermore, the number of the unit cells in the direction perpendicular to the axis of the nanorods is found to be insensitive to the resonance and response time, thus providing a tunability in aspect ratio that can boost the temperature uniformity in the sub-Kelvin level., 14 pages, 5 figures

Permutation matrices form an important computational building block frequently used in various fields including e.g., communications, information security and data processing. Optical implementation of permutation operators with relatively large number of input-output interconnections based on power-efficient, fast, and compact platforms is highly desirable. Here, we present diffractive optical networks engineered through deep learning to all-optically perform permutation operations that can scale to hundreds of thousands of interconnections between an input and an output field-of-view using passive transmissive layers that are individually structured at the wavelength scale. Our findings indicate that the capacity of the diffractive optical network in approximating a given permutation operation increases proportional to the number of diffractive layers and trainable transmission elements in the system. Such deeper diffractive network designs can pose practical challenges in terms of physical alignment and output diffraction efficiency of the system. We addressed these challenges by designing misalignment tolerant diffractive designs that can all-optically perform arbitrarily-selected permutation operations, and experimentally demonstrated, for the first time, a diffractive permutation network that operates at THz part of the spectrum. Diffractive permutation networks might find various applications in e.g., security, image encryption and data processing, along with telecommunications; especially with the carrier frequencies in wireless communications approaching THz-bands, the presented diffractive permutation networks can potentially serve as channel routing and interconnection panels in wireless networks., Comment: 22 Pages, 6 Figures

An $n\times n$ matrix $C$ is said to be {\it centrosymmetric} if it satisfies the relation $JCJ=C$, where $J$ is the $n\times n$ counteridentity matrix. Centrosymmetric matrices have a rich eigenstructure that has been studied extensively in the literature. Many results for centrosymmetric matrices have been generalized to wider classes of matrices that arise in a wide variety of disciplines. In this paper, we obtain interesting spectral properties for nonnegative centrosymmetric matrices. We show how to change one single eigenvalue, two or three eigenvalues of an $n\times n$ nonnegative centrosymmetric matrix without changing any of the remaining eigenvalues neither nonnegativity nor the centrosymmetric structure. Cavity magnonics deals with the interaction of magnons - elementary excitations in magnetic materials - and confined electromagnetic fields. We introduce the basic physics and review the experimental and theoretical progress of this young field that is gearing up for integration in future quantum technologies. Much of its appeal is derived from the strong magnon-photon coupling and the easily-reached nonlinear regime in microwave cavities. The interaction of magnons with light as detected by Brillouin light scattering is enhanced in magnetic optical resonators, which can be employed to manipulate magnon distributions. We report parametric gain by utilizing $ \chi^{(2)} $ non-linearities in a semiconductor Bragg Reflection Waveguide (BRW) waveguide chip. Under the two-mode degenerate type II phase matching, it can be shown that more than 18 dBs of parametric gain for both TE and TM modes is tenable in 100s of micrometers of device length. Polarization insensitive parametric gain can be attained within the 1550 nm region of the spectrum. These AlGaAs BRW waveguides exhibit sub-photon per pulse sensitivity. This is in sharp contrast to other types of parametric gain devices which utilize $ \chi^{(3)} $, where the pump wavelength is in the vicinity of the signal wavelength. This sensitivity, which reached 0.1~photon/pulse, can usher a new era for on-chip quantum information processing using compact, micrometer-scale devices., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

A multimode fiber represents the ultimate limit in miniaturization of imaging endoscopes. However, such a miniaturization usually comes as a cost of a low spatial resolution and a long acquisition time. Here we propose a fast superresolution-fiber-imaging technique employing compressive sensing through a multimode fiber with a data-driven machine-learning framework. We implement a generative adversarial network (GAN) to explore the sparsity inherent to the model and provide compressive reconstruction images that are not sparse in a representation basis. The proposed method outperforms other widespread compressive imaging algorithms in terms of both image quality and noise robustness. We experimentally demonstrate machine-learning ghost imaging below the diffraction limit at a sub-Nyquist speed through a thin multimode fiber probe. We believe that this work has great potential in applications in various fields ranging from biomedical imaging to remote sensing.

Mid-infrared semiconductor lasers in photonic integrated circuits are of considerable interest for a variety of industrial, environmental, and medical applications. However, photonic integration technologies in the mid-infrared lag far behind the near-infrared range. Here we present the monolithic integration of mid-infrared quantum cascade lasers with low-loss passive waveguides via butt-coupling. The passive waveguide losses are experimentally evaluated to be only 1.2 ± 0.3 dB/cm, with negligible butt-coupling losses. We demonstrate continuous-wave lasing at room temperature of these active-to-passive waveguide coupled devices. Moreover, we report a frequency comb operation paving the way toward on-chip, mid-infrared, dual-comb sensors. ISSN:2330-4022

Two dimensional (2D) Photonic crystals (PhCs) based cross waveguide structure (CWs) consisting of resonant cavity is investigated in this paper. Investigations are done using Two Dimensional Finite Difference Time Domain (2DFDTD) method. Transmission characteristics have been obtained for different radii of central rod placed at crossing point of two waveguides and number of regular rods surrounding central rod. Nonlinear behavior is also studied for different operating wavelengths.

The optoelectronic application of gold nanoparticles is majorly influenced by certain unique features they exhibit, like surface plasmon resonance, ready functionalization and ease of conjugation with bio-analytes etc. Production of gold nanoparticles through laser ablation is the simplest method with the advantage of obtaining high purity particles. In this work, the saturation and reverse saturation behaviour during ultrafast absorption in laser ablated gold nanoparticles is studied using the Z-scan technique. The Z-scan experiment is conducted using 800 nm, 84 MHz and 120 fs intense laser pulses at different excitation intensities from 6.23 GW/cm2 to 23.37 GW/cm2. The open aperture Z-scan measurements show distinct positive region till an excitation of 17 GW/cm2 after which there is a clear cross-over into negative trend. The strength of this negative wing increases with the excitation intensity, which is featured by the nonlinear absorption due to the two-photon and three-photon absorption contributions with their respective coefficients in the range of 10-3. The optical limiting nature of these gold nanoparticles is demonstrated. An understanding of these nonlinear optical properties provides better insight in their application towards biomedical diagnostics and optical switching and limiting.

In this paper, recent results regarding rare earth element doped with chalcogenide glasses for optical gain media such as amplifiers and lasers are reviewed. Rare earth Chalcogenide glasses are formed when chalcogen elements (S, Se, Te etc.) are mixed with new additive elements (Ge, Ga, Sb, As etc.) and also with rare earth elements (Er, Dy, Pd, Pr etc.) from periodic table and prepared by melt quench technique (MQT). Rare earth element doped with chalcogenide glasses has been emerged as a suitable candidate for applications in the numeral passive and active. Among various materials, chalcogenide glasses show significant improvement in their emission properties in the optical communication range and spectroscopic properties. Finally, rare earth doped chalcogenide and optical fibers show potential for high power mid-infrared gain medium and their spectroscopic properties as well.

The use of optical cavities to control chemical reactions has been of great interest recently, following demonstrations of enhancement, suppression, and negligible effects on chemical reaction rates depending on the specific reaction and cavity frequency. In this work, we study the reaction rate inside imperfect cavities, where we introduce a broadening parameter in the spectral density to mimic Fabry-P\'erot cavities. We investigate cavity modifications to reaction rates using non-Markovian Langevin dynamics with frictional and random forces to account for the presence of imperfect optical cavities. We demonstrate that in the regime of weak solvent and cavity friction, the cavity can enhance chemical reaction rates. On the other hand, in the high friction regime, cavities can suppress chemical reactions. Furthermore, we find that the broadening of the cavity spectral density gives rise to blue shifts of the resonance conditions and, surprisingly, increases the sharpness of the resonance effect., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

One of the key insights in the emerging field of non-Hermitian photonics is that well-established concepts like the laser can be operated in reverse to realize a 'coherent perfect absorber' (CPA). While conceptually appealing, such CPAs are limited so far to a single, judiciously shaped wavefront or 'mode'. Here, we demonstrate how this limitation can be overcome by time-reversing a 'degenerate cavity laser', based on a unique cavity that self-images any incident light-field onto itself. Placing a weak, critically-coupled absorber into this cavity, we demonstrate that any incoming wavefront, even a complex and dynamically-varying speckle pattern, is absorbed with close to perfect efficiency in a massively parallel interference process. Moreover, the coherent nature of multi-mode absorption allows us to tune the degree of absorption over a wide range. Cu3Sn was recently predicted to host topological Dirac fermions, but related research is still in its infancy. The growth of large and high-quality Cu3Sn single crystals is, therefore, highly desired to investigate the possible topological properties. In this work, we report the single crystal growth of Cu3Sn by Czochralski (CZ) method. Crystal structure, chemical composition, and transport properties of Cu3Sn single crystals were analyzed to verify the crystal quality. Notably, compared to the mm-sized crystals from a molten Sn-flux, the cm-sized crystals obtained by the CZ method are free from contamination from flux materials, paving the way for the follow-up works.

Semiconductor quantum dots embedded in hybrid circular Bragg gratings are a promising platform for the efficient generation of nonclassical light. The scalable fabrication of multiple devices with similar performance is highly desirable for their practical use as sources of single and entangled photons, while the ability to operate at telecom wavelength is essential for their integration with the existing fiber infrastructure. In this work we combine the promising properties of broadband hybrid circular Bragg gratings with a membrane-transfer process performed on 3" wafer scale. We develop and study single-photon sources based on InAs/GaAs quantum dots emitting in the telecom O-band, demonstrating bright single-photon emission with Purcell factor > 5 and count rates up to 10 MHz. Furthermore, we address the question of reproducibility by benchmarking the performance of 10 devices covering a wide spectral range of 50 nm within the O-band.

In this article, we introduce an analytical description for the nonlinear off-resonance qutrit-cavity system through intensity-dependent nonlinear coupling under intrinsic decoherence. When the cavity is initially in coherent and even coherent states. The dynamics of the negativity entanglement, in the off-resonance qutrit-cavity system, is investigated under the physical parameters of the qutrit-cavity detuning, the intrinsic decoherence as well as the initial cavity coherent states. It is found that the ability of the off-resonance qutrit-cavity interaction to generate the entanglement, depends on the physical parameters. The high nonclassicality of the even coherent state can enhance the generated entanglement and its stability. For the intrinsic decoherence, the amount and the stability of the generated qutrit-cavity entanglement can be controlled by the coherent field intensity of the initial cavity states.

An investigation of angled flip-chip integration of a singlemode 850 nm vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) on a silicon nitride photonic integrated circuit (PIC) is presented. Using numerical FDTD simulations, we consider the conditions under which the VCSEL can be integrated at an angle over a grating coupler with high coupling efficiency and low optical feedback. With both coupling efficiency and feedback decreasing with increasing angle, there is a trade-off. With co-directional coupling, first-order diffraction loss sets in at a critical angle, which further reduces the coupling efficiency. No such critical angle exists for contra-directional coupling. We also experimentally demonstrate angled flip-chip integration of GaAs-based 850 nm single transverse and polarization mode VCSELs over grating couplers on a silicon-nitride PIC. At the output grating coupler, light is either collected by an optical fiber or converted to a photocurrent using a flip-chip integrated GaAs-based photodetector. The latter forms an on-PIC optical link. We measured an insertion loss of 21.9, 17.6 and 20.1 dB with a singlemode fiber, multimode fiber and photodetector over the output grating coupler, respectively.

In this paper, all-optical short-time Fourier transform (STFT) based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is proposed and further used for real-time time-frequency analysis of different radio frequency (RF) signals. In the proposed all-optical STFT system, SBS not only provides a band-pass filter for implementing the window function in conjunction with a periodic frequency-sweep optical signal but also obtains the frequency domain information in different time windows through the generated waveform via frequency-to-time mapping (FTTM). A periodic frequency-sweep optical signal is generated and then modulated at a Mach-Zehnder modulator by the electrical signal under test (SUT). During different sweep periods, the fixed Brillouin gain functions as a bandpass filter to select a specific range of the spectrum, which is equivalent to applying a sliding window function to the corresponding section of the temporal signal with the help of the sweep optical signal. At the same time, after the optical signal is selectively amplified by the SBS gain and converted back to the electrical domain, SBS also implements the real-time FTTM, which can be utilized to obtain the frequency domain information corresponding to different time windows through the generated waveforms via the FTTM. The frequency domain information corresponding to different time windows is formed and spliced to analyze the time-frequency relationship of the SUT in real-time. An experiment is performed. STFTs of a variety of RF signals are carried out in a 12-GHz bandwidth limited only by the equipment, and the dynamic frequency resolution is better than 60 MHz., 18 pages, 9 figures, 1 table

Optical nonlinear functions are crucial for various applications in integrated photonics, such as all-optical information processing, photonic neural networks and on-chip ultrafast light sources. Due to the weak nonlinearities in most integrated photonic platforms, realizing optical nonlinear functions typically requires large driving energies in the picojoules level or beyond, thus imposing a barrier for most applications. Here, we tackle this challenge and demonstrate an integrated nonlinear splitter device in lithium niobate nano-waveguides by simultaneous engineering of the dispersion and quasi-phase matching. We achieve non-resonant all-optical switching with ultra-low energies down to tens of femtojoules, a near instantaneous switching time of 18 fs, and a large extinction ratio of more than 5 dB. Our nonlinear splitter simultaneously realizes switch-on and -off operations and features a state-of-the-art switching energy-time product as low as $1.4 \times10^{-27}$ J$\cdot$s. We also show a path toward attojoule level all-optical switching by further optimizing the device geometry. Our results can enable on-chip ultrafast and energy-efficient all-optical information processing, computing systems, and light sources.

The realization of photonic microwave oscillators using optomechanical cavities has recently become a reality. By pumping the cavity with a blue-detuned laser, the so-called phonon lasing regime - in which a mechanical resonance is amplified beyond losses - can be reached and the input signal gets modulated by highly-coherent tones at integer multiples of the mechanical resonance. \textcolor{Red}{Implementing optomechanical cavities on released films with high index of refraction can lead to optical modes at telecom wavelengths and mechanical resonances in the GHz scale, resulting in highly-stable signals in the microwave domain upon photodetection}. Owing to the extreme compactness of such cavities, application in satellite communications (SATCOM) seems highly appropriate, but no experiments have been reported so far. In this paper, an optomechanical microwave oscillator (OMO) built on a micron-scale silicon optomechanical crystal cavity is characterized and tested in a real SATCOM testbed. Using a blue-detuned laser, the OMO is driven into a phonon lasing state where multiple harmonics are generated, reaching tones up to 20 GHz. Under this regime, its practical applicability, remarkably addressing its performance as a photonic local oscillator, has been validated. The results, in addition with the advantages of extreme compactness and silicon-technology compatibility, make OMOs very promising candidates to build \textcolor{Red}{ultra-low} weight photonics-based microwave oscillators for SATCOM applications.

The modeling of optical wave propagation in optical fiber is a task of fast and accurate solving the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (NLSE), and can enable the optical system design, digital signal processing verification and fast waveform calculation. Traditional waveform modeling of full-time and full-frequency information is the split-step Fourier method (SSFM), which has long been regarded as challenging in long-haul wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical fiber communication systems because it is extremely time-consuming. Here we propose a linear-nonlinear feature decoupling distributed (FDD) waveform modeling scheme to model long-haul WDM fiber channel, where the channel linear effects are modelled by the NLSE-derived model-driven methods and the nonlinear effects are modelled by the data-driven deep learning methods. Meanwhile, the proposed scheme only focuses on one-span fiber distance fitting, and then recursively transmits the model to achieve the required transmission distance. The proposed modeling scheme is demonstrated to have high accuracy, high computing speeds, and robust generalization abilities for different optical launch powers, modulation formats, channel numbers and transmission distances. The total running time of FDD waveform modeling scheme for 41-channel 1040-km fiber transmission is only 3 minutes versus more than 2 hours using SSFM for each input condition, which achieves a 98% reduction in computing time. Considering the multi-round optimization by adjusting system parameters, the complexity reduction is significant. The results represent a remarkable improvement in nonlinear fiber modeling and open up novel perspectives for solution of NLSE-like partial differential equations and optical fiber physics problems., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 1 table, 30 references

In nanoscale photonic devices, the demand for multifunctionality from metasurface 2D optics increases rapidly. To explore fine-tuning in the design metric, we reinvestigated the trapezoid shape copper metasurface with Finite-Difference Time-Domain simulation for efficiently using linearly polarized light for two different functionalities. From the plasmonic band structure, we see how the degree of asymmetry in geometry affects the efficient resonance coupling of the traveling plasmonic modes, along with different types of mode hybridization profiles related to the nanoantenna's geometric shape. Tuning the nanoantenna's length, we can excite the effective plasmon mode supported by this configuration and guide out surface wave unidirectionally from the normal incident free-space light for visible to infrared range. Directed surface plasmon polariton has both antisymmetric and symmetric modes oscillating between the top and bottom surface of the continuous metal layer depending on the nanoantenna's length and wavelength. This proposed Copper metasurface is optimized for far-field application of broadband (600-900 nm) anomalous beam steering for an average of 65 percent efficiency with a maximum of 64 degree angle. This work brings more understanding of how one metasurface can be implemented in small footprint plasmonic devices, waveguide mode controlling, as well as beam steering with their wavelength dependent functionality., 12 pages, 6 figures

In this work, a model of optomechanical system was investigated by analyzing the entanglement dynamics of two related mechanical oscillators in a modified system. Geometrical shapes effects of optical cavities on entanglement of a representative optomechanical system were investigated by means of performing numerical analysis. It was signified that the steady-state or the dynamic behavior of optomechanical engagement could be created owing to the strength of mechanical pairs, which are strong towards the oscillating temperature. In addition, the mentioned entanglement dynamics were seen to be entirely related to the natural state’s stability. Furthermore, rendering the mechanical damping effects, the critical mechanical coupling strength-related analytical expression, where the transition from a steady state to a dynamic clamp occurs, was reported. In the studied system, two identical mechanical oscillators were formed in different conditions of the optical cavities shapes.

The deployment of a modular truss antenna reflector is relied on the driven energy of the springs between the components of the structure. The deployment process is characterized by fast speed and large impact. In order to study the impact characteristics of antenna deployment on the boundary, the deployment dynamic analysis of a modular truss antenna reflector is carried out. The deployment impact experiment is performed to obtain the impact forces of the reflector on the boundary. The dynamic model of the modular truss reflector is modified according to the experiment results. The dynamic analysis of a satellite with an arm and a modular truss reflector is conducted by using the modified reflector model. The dynamic behavior of the satellite in orbit during the modular truss antenna reflector deployment is predicted.

Using localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) as an optical probe we demonstrate the presence of free carriers in phosphorus doped silicon nanocrystals (SiNCs) embedded in a silica matrix. In small SiNCs, with radius ranging from 2.6 to 5.5 nm, the infrared spectroscopy study coupled to numerical simulations allows us to determine the number of electrically active phosphorus atoms with a precision of a few atoms. We demonstrate that LSP resonances can be supported with only about 10 free electrons per nanocrystal, confirming theoretical predictions and probing the limit of the collective nature of plasmons. We reveal the appearance of an avoided crossing behavior linked to the hybridization between the localized surface plasmon in the doped nanocrystals and the silica matrix phonon modes. Finally, a careful analysis of the scattering time dependence versus carrier density in the small size regime allows us to detect the appearance of a new scattering process at high dopant concentration, which can be explained by P clustering inside the SiNCs.

Noncoherent light, as a common light source in life, can effectively avoid problems such as scattering noise caused by optical components incoherent light imaging, and through the design of the optical path can also trigger interference and holographic imaging of objects, allowing holography to be used in more fields. Various techniques have emerged for recording holograms using incoherent light sources as technology has developed. A recording method has been proposed that exploits the correlation between the object wave information and the Fresnel band sheet to achieve incoherent hologram recording. Using a spatial light modulator (SLM) loaded with a bit-phase mask with multiplexed lens function, the incident light wavefield is phase-modulated to achieve diffraction spectroscopy and phase shifting. And holograms with different phase shifts can be obtained and combined with phase-shifting techniques to eliminate the effects of twin images caused by coaxial holography in the reproduction process. Based on the study of this incoherent holographic imaging system, the influence of the characteristics of the main components of the system and the corresponding parameters on the resolution of the recorded and reproduced holograms is investigated, and optimization methods are given from both theoretical and experimental studies. The empirical analysis of the FINCH imaging system is carried out. The observed optical path is designed, and the method of making a bit-phase mask loaded on a spatial light modulator is presented. The effect of the focal length and recording distance of the dislocation mask on the resolution of the system is investigated by both computer simulation and experimental operation.
