Context: Photoevaporation is an important process for protoplanetary disc dispersal but there has so far been a lack of consensus from simulations over the mass-loss rates and the most important part of the high-energy spectrum for driving the wind. Aims: We aim to isolate the origins of these discrepancies through carefully-benchmarked hydrodynamic simulations of X-ray photoevaporation with time-dependent thermochemistry calculated on the fly. Methods: We conduct hydrodynamic simulations with pluto where the thermochemistry is calculated using prizmo. We explore the contribution of certain key microphysical processes and the impact of using different spectra used previously in literature studies. Results: We find that additional cooling results from the excitation of O by neutral H, which leads to dramatically reduced mass-loss across the disc compared to previous X-ray photoevaporation models, with an integrated rate of 10^-9 Msun/yr. Such rates would allow for longer-lived discs than previously expected from population synthesis. An alternative spectrum with less soft X-ray produces mass-loss rates around a factor of 2-3 times lower. The chemistry is significantly out of equilibrium, with the survival of H2 into the wind aided by advection. Disc winds and planet-disc interactions are two crucial mechanisms that define the structure, evolution and dispersal of protoplanetary discs. While winds are capable of removing material from discs, eventually leading to their dispersal, massive planets can shape their disc by creating sub-structures such as gaps and spiral arms. We study the interplay between an X-ray photoevaporative disc wind and the substructures generated due to planet-disc interactions to determine how their mutual interactions affect the disc's and the planet's evolution. We perform three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of viscous ($\alpha = 6.9\cdot10^{-4}$) discs that host a Jupiter-like planet and undergo X-ray photoevaporation. We trace the gas flows within the disc and wind and measure the accretion rate onto the planet, as well as the gravitational torque that is acting on it. Our results show that the planetary gap takes away the wind's pressure support, allowing wind material to fall back into the gap. This opens new pathways for material from the inner disc (and part of the outer disc) to be redistributed through the wind towards the gap. Consequently, the gap becomes shallower, and the flow of mass across the gap in both directions is significantly increased, as well as the planet's mass-accretion rate (by factors $\approx 5$ and $\approx 2$, respectively). Moreover, the wind-driven redistribution results in a denser inner disc and less dense outer disc, which, combined with the recycling of a significant portion of the inner wind, leads to longer lifetimes of the inner disc, contrary to the expectation in a planet-induced photoevaporation (PIPE) scenario that has been proposed in the past., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A; 15+3 pages, 12+3 figures

Context: Planet-disk interactions play a crucial role in the understanding of planet formation and disk evolution. There are multiple numerical tools available to simulate these interactions, including the often-used FARGO code and its variants. Many of the codes were extended over time to include additional physical processes with a focus on their accurate modeling. Aims: We introduce FargoCPT, an updated version of FARGO incorporating other previous enhancements to the code, to provide a simulation environment tailored to study interactions between stars, planets, and disks, ensuring accurate representation of planet systems, hydrodynamics, and dust dynamics with a focus on usability. Methods: The radiation-hydrodynamics part of FargoCPT uses a second-order upwind scheme in 2D polar coordinates supporting multiple equations of state, radiation transport, heating and cooling, and self-gravity. Shocks are considered using artificial viscosity. Integration of the N-body system is achieved by leveraging the REBOUND code. The dust module utilizes massless tracer particles, adapting to drag laws for the Stokes and Epstein regimes. Moreover, FargoCPT provides mechanisms to simulate accretion onto the stars and planets. Results: The code has been tested in practice by its use in various publications. Additionally, it comes with an automated test suite to test the physics modules. Conclusions: FargoCPT offers a unique set of simulation capabilities within the current landscape of publicly available planet-disk interaction simulation tools. The high-energy radiation emitted by young stars can have a strong influence on their rotational evolution at later stages. This is because internal photoevaporation is one of the major drivers of the dispersal of circumstellar disks, which surround all newly born low-mass stars during the first few million years of their evolution. Employing an internal EUV/X-ray photoevaporation model, we have derived a simple recipe for calculating realistic inner disk lifetimes of protoplanetary disks. This prescription was implemented into a magnetic morphology-driven rotational evolution model and is used to investigate the impact of disk-locking on the spin evolution of low-mass stars. We find that the length of the disk-locking phase has a profound impact on the subsequent rotational evolution of a young star, and the implementation of realistic disk lifetimes leads to an improved agreement of model outcomes with observed rotation period distributions for open clusters of various ages. However, for both young star-forming regions tested in our model, the strong bimodality in rotation periods that is observed in hPer could not be recovered. hPer is only successfully recovered, if the model is started from a double-peaked distribution with an initial disk fraction of $65\,\%$. However, at an age of only $\sim 1\,\mathrm{Myr}$, such a low disk fraction can only be achieved if an additional disk dispersal process, such as external photoevaporation, is invoked. Understanding the complex evolution of protoplanetary disks (PPDs) and their dispersal via energetic stellar radiation are prominent challenges in astrophysics. It has recently been established that specifically the X-ray luminosity from the central protostar can significantly heat the surface of the disk, causing powerful photoevaporative winds that eject a considerable fraction of the disc's mass. Recent work in the field has moreover shown the importance of global PPD simulations that simultaneously take into account non-ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) effects and detailed thermochemistry. Our motivation with the current paper lies in combining these two aspects and figure out how they interact. Focus is put on the Hall Effect (HE) and the impact it has on the overall field topology and mass loss/accretion rates. Utilizing a novel X-ray temperature parametrisation, we perform 2D-axisymmetric MHD simulations with the NIRVANA fluid code, covering all non-ideal effects. We find that, in the aligned orientation, the HE causes prominent inward displacement of the poloidal field lines that can increase the accretion rate through a laminar Maxwell stress. We find that outflows are mainly driven by photoevaporation -- unless the magnetic field strength is considerable (i.e., $\beta_p\leq 10^{3}$) or the X-ray luminosity low enough (i.e., $\log{L_X}\leq 29.3$). Inferred mass loss rate are in the range of the expected values $10^{-8}$ to $10^{-7}M_{\odot}yr^{-1}$. For comparison, we have also performed pure hydrodynamic (HD) runs and compared them with the equivalent MHD runs. Here we have found that the magnetic field does indeed contribute to the mass loss rate, albeit only discernibly so for low enough $L_X$ (i.e., $\log{L_X}\leq 30.8$). [abridged]Photoevaporation and dust-trapping are individually considered to be important mechanisms in the evolution and morphology of protoplanetary disks. We studied how the presence of early substructures affects the evolution of the dust distribution and flux in the millimeter continuum of disks that are undergoing photoevaporative dispersal. We also tested if the predicted properties resemble those observed in the population of transition disks. We used the numerical code Dustpy to simulate disk evolution considering gas accretion, dust growth, dust-trapping at substructures, and mass loss due to X-ray and EUV (XEUV) photoevaporation and dust entrainment. Then, we compared how the dust mass and millimeter flux evolve for different disk models. We find that, during photoevaporative dispersal, disks with primordial substructures retain more dust and are brighter in the millimeter continuum than disks without early substructures, regardless of the photoevaporative cavity size. Once the photoevaporative cavity opens, the estimated fluxes for the disk models that are initially structured are comparable to those found in the bright transition disk population ($F_\textrm{mm} > 30\, \textrm{mJy}$), while the disk models that are initially smooth have fluxes comparable to the transition disks from the faint population ($F_\textrm{mm} < 30\, \textrm{mJy}$), suggesting a link between each model and population. Our models indicate that the efficiency of the dust trapping determines the millimeter flux of the disk, while the gas loss due to photoevaporation controls the formation and expansion of a cavity, decoupling the mechanisms responsible for each feature. In consequence, even a planet with a mass comparable to Saturn could trap enough dust to reproduce the millimeter emission of a bright transition disk, while its cavity size is independently driven by photoevaporative dispersal., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Photoevaporation from high energy stellar radiation has been thought to drive the dispersal of protoplanetary discs. Different theoretical models have been proposed, but their predictions diverge in terms of the rate and modality at which discs lose their mass, with significant implications for the formation and evolution of planets. In this paper we use disc population synthesis models to interpret recent observations of the lowest accreting protoplanetary discs, comparing predictions from EUV-driven, FUV-driven and X-ray driven photoevaporation models. We show that the recent observational data of stars with low accretion rates (low accretors) point to X-ray photoevaporation as the preferred mechanism driving the final stages of protoplanetary disc dispersal. Photoevaporative disc winds play a key role in our understanding of circumstellar disc evolution, especially in the final stages, and they might affect the planet formation process and the final location of planets. The study of transition discs (i.e. discs with a central dust cavity) is central for our understanding of the photoevaporation process and disc dispersal. However, we need to distinguish cavities created by photoevaporation from those created by giant planets. Theoretical models are necessary to identify possible observational signatures of the two different processes, and models to find the differences between the two processes are still lacking. In this paper we study a sample of transition discs obtained from radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of internally photoevaporated discs, and focus on the dust dynamics relevant for current ALMA observations. We then compared our results with gaps opened by super Earths/giant planets, finding that the photoevaporated cavity steepness depends mildly on gap size, and it is similar to that of a 1 Jupiter mass planet. However, the dust density drops less rapidly inside the photoevaporated cavity compared to the planetary case due to the less efficient dust filtering. This effect is visible in the resulting spectral index, which shows a larger spectral index at the cavity edge and a shallower increase inside it with respect to the planetary case. Aims. We want to find the distribution of initial conditions that best reproduces disc observations at the population level. Methods. We first ran a parameter study using a 1D model that includes the viscous evolution of a gas disc, dust, and pebbles, coupled with an emission model to compute the millimetre flux observable with ALMA. This was used to train a machine learning surrogate model that can compute the relevant quantity for comparison with observations in seconds. This surrogate model was used to perform parameter studies and synthetic disc populations. Results. Performing a parameter study, we find that internal photoevaporation leads to a lower dependency of disc lifetime on stellar mass than external photoevaporation. This dependence should be investigated in the future. Performing population synthesis, we find that under the combined losses of internal and external photoevaporation, discs are too short lived. Conclusions. To match observational constraints, future models of disc evolution need to include one or a combination of the following processes: infall of material to replenish the discs, shielding of the disc from internal photoevaporation due to magnetically driven disc winds, and extinction of external high-energy radiation. Nevertheless, disc properties in low-external-photoevaporation regions can be reproduced by having more massive and compact discs. Planets are born from the gas and dust discs surrounding young stars. Disc winds and planet formation are considered to be two of the most important mechanisms that drive the evolution and dispersal of protoplanetary discs and in turn define the environment in which planets form and evolve. While both have been studied extensively in the past, we combine them into one model by performing three-dimensional radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of giant planet hosting discs that are undergoing X-ray photo-evaporation, with the goal to analyse the interactions between both mechanisms. In order to study the effect on observational diagnostics, we produce synthetic observations of commonly used wind-tracing forbidden emission lines with detailed radiative transfer and photo-ionisation calculations. We find that a sufficiently massive giant planet carves a gap in the gas disc that is deep enough to affect the structure and kinematics of the pressure-driven photo-evaporative wind significantly. This effect can be strong enough to be visible in the synthetic high-resolution observations of some of our wind diagnostic lines, such as the [OI] 6300 \r{A} or [SII] 6730 \r{A} lines. When the disc is observed at inclinations around 40{\deg} and higher, the spectral line profiles may exhibit a peak in the redshifted part of the spectrum, which cannot easily be explained by simple wind models alone. Moreover, massive planets can induce asymmetric substructures within the disc and the photo-evaporative wind, giving rise to temporal variations of the line profiles that can be strong enough to be observable on timescales of less than a quarter of the planet's orbital period., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 13+3 pages, 8+1 figures

Transition disks with small inner dust cavities are interesting targets for the study of disk clearing mechanisms. Such disks have been identified through a deficit in the infrared part of their SED, but spatially resolved millimeter imaging is required to confirm the presence of an inner dust cavity. We use high-resolution ALMA observations of 30 mas resolution in Band 6 continuum and $^{12}$CO 2--1 emission of 10 transition disk candidates in the Lupus star forming region, in order to confirm the presence of inner dust cavities and infer the responsible mechanism. The continuum data are analyzed using visibility modeling and the SEDs are compared with radiative transfer models. Out of the six transition disk candidates selected from their SED, only one disk revealed an inner dust cavity of 4 au in radius. Three of the other disks are highly inclined, which limits the detectability of an inner dust cavity but it is also demonstrated to be the possible cause for the infrared deficit in their SED. The two remaining SED-selected disks are very compact, with dust radii of only $\sim$3 au. From the four candidates selected from low-resolution images, three new transition disks with large inner cavities $>$20 au are identified, bringing the total number of transition disks with large cavities in Lupus to 13. SED-selected transition disks with small cavities are biased towards highly inclined and compact disks, which casts doubt on the use of their occurrence rates in estimating dispersal timescales of photoevaporation. Using newly derived disk dust masses and radii, we re-evaluate the size-luminosity and $M_{\rm dust}-M_{\rm star}$ relations. Observations of young stars hosting transition disks show that several of them have high accretion rates, despite their disks presenting extended cavities in their dust component. This represents a challenge for theoretical models, which struggle to reproduce both features. We explore if a disk evolution model, including a dead zone and disk dispersal by X-ray photoevaporation, can explain the high accretion rates and large gaps (or cavities) measured in transition disks. We implement a dead zone turbulence profile and a photoevaporative mass loss profile into numerical simulations of gas and dust. We perform a population synthesis study of the gas component, and obtain synthetic images and SED of the dust component through radiative transfer calculations. This model results in long lived inner disks and fast dispersing outer disks, that can reproduce both the accretion rates and gap sizes observed in transition disks. For a dead zone of turbulence $\alpha_{dz} = 10^{-4}$ and extent $r_{dz}$ = 10 AU, our population synthesis study shows that $63\%$ of our transition disks are accreting with $\dot{M}_g > 10^{-11} M_\odot/yr$ after opening a gap. Among those accreting transition disks, half display accretion rates higher than $5\times10^{-10} M_\odot/yr$ . The dust component in these disks is distributed in two regions: in a compact inner disk inside the dead zone, and in a ring at the outer edge of the photoevaporative gap, which can be located between 20 AU and 100 AU. Our radiative transfer calculations show that the disk displays an inner disk and an outer ring in the millimeter continuum, a feature observed in some transition disks. A disk model considering X-ray photoevaporative dispersal in combination with dead zones can explain several of the observed properties in transition disks including: the high accretion rates, the large gaps, and long-lived inner disks at mm-emission., Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures. The strong X-ray irradiation from young solar-type stars may play a crucial role in the thermodynamics and chemistry of circumstellar discs, driving their evolution in the last stages of disc dispersal as well as shaping the atmospheres of newborn planets. In this paper we study the influence of stellar mass on circumstellar disc mass-loss rates due to X-ray irradiation, extending our previous study of the mass-loss rate's dependence on the X-ray luminosity and spectrum hardness. We focus on stars with masses between 0.1 and 1 Solar mass, which are the main target of current and future missions to find potentially habitable planets. We find a linear relationship between the mass-loss rates and the stellar masses when changing the X-ray luminosity accordingly with the stellar mass. This linear increase is observed also when the X-ray luminosity is kept fixed because of the lower disc aspect ratio which allows the X-ray irradiation to reach larger radii. We provide new analytical relations for the mass-loss rates and profiles of photoevaporative winds as a function of the stellar mass that can be used in disc and planet population synthesis models. Our photoevaporative models correctly predict the observed trend of inner-disc lifetime as a function of stellar mass with an increased steepness for stars smaller than 0.3 Solar mass, indicating that X-ray photoevaporation is a good candidate to explain the observed disc dispersal process., Comment: 9 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Young solar-type stars are known to be strong X-ray emitters and their X-ray spectra have been widely studied. X-rays from the central star may play a crucial role in the thermodynamics and chemistry of the circumstellar material as well as in the atmospheric evolution of young planets. In this paper we present model spectra based on spectral parameters derived from the observations of young stars in the Orion Nebula Cluster from the Chandra Orion Ultradeep Project (COUP). The spectra are then used to calculate new photoevaporation prescriptions that can be used in disc and planet population synthesis models. Our models clearly show that disc wind mass loss rates are controlled by the stellar luminosity in the soft (100 eV - 1 keV) X- ray band. New analytical relations are provided for the mass loss rates and profiles of photoevaporative winds as a function of the luminosity in the soft X-ray band. The agreement between observed and predicted transition disc statistics moderately improved using the new spectra, but the observed population of strongly accreting large cavity discs can still not be reproduced by these models. Furthermore, our models predict a population of non-accreting transition discs that are not observed. Close binaries ($a_{bin} < 20$ au) are known to harbor planets, yet planet formation is unlikely to succeed in such systems. Studying the dynamics of disks in close binaries can help to understand how those planets could have formed. We study the impact that numerical and physical parameters have on the dynamics of disks in close binaries. We use the $\gamma$-Cephei system as an example and focus on disk quantities such as disk eccentricity and the precession rate as indicators for the dynamical state of the disks. We simulate disks in close binaries by performing two-dimensional radiative hydrodynamical simulations using a modified version of the Fargo code. First, we perform a parameter study for different numerical parameters to confirm that our results are robust. In the second part, we study the effects of different masses and different viscosities on the disks' dynamics. Previous studies on radiative disks in close binaries used too low resolutions and too small simulation domains, which impacted the disk's dynamics. We find that radiative disks in close binaries, after an initialization phase, become eccentric with mean eccentricities between 0.06 to 0.27 and display a slow retrograde precession with periods ranging from $4 - 40T_{bin}$ which depends quadratically on the disk's mean aspect ratio. In general, the disks show a coherent, rigid precession which can be broken, however, by changes in the opacity law reducing the overall eccentricity of the disk., Comment: Accepted in A&A; 14 Pages, 23 figures

Numerical models have shown that disc dispersal via internal photoevaporation driven by the host star can successfully reproduce the observed pile-up of warm Jupiters near 1-2 au. However, since a range of different mechanisms have been proposed to cause the same feature, clear observational diagnostics of disc dispersal leaving an imprint in the observed distribution of giant planets could help to constrain the dominant mechanisms. We aim to assess the impact of disc dispersal via X-ray driven-photoevaporation (XPE) onto giant planet separations in order to provide theoretical constraints on the location and size of any possible features related to this process within their observed orbital distribution. For this purpose, we perform a set of 1D population syntheses with varying initial conditions and correlate the gas giants' final parking locations with the X-ray luminosities of their host stars in order to quantify observables of this process within the $L_\mathrm{x}$-$a$-plane of these systems. We find that XPE indeed creates an underdensity of gas giants near the gravitational radius, with corresponding pile-ups inside and/or outside of this location. However, the size and location of these features are strongly dependent on the choice of initial conditions in our model, such as the assumed formation location of the planets. XPE can strongly affect the migration process of giant planets and leave potentially observable signatures within the observed orbital separations of giant planets. However, due to the simplistic approach employed in our model, which lacks a self-consistent treatment of planet formation within an evolving disc, a quantitative analysis of the final planet population orbits is not possible. Transition discs are expected to be a natural outcome of the interplay between photoevaporation (PE) and giant planet formation. Massive planets reduce the inflow of material from the outer to the inner disc, therefore triggering an earlier onset of disc dispersal due to PE through a process known as Planet-Induced PhotoEvaporation (PIPE). In this case, a cavity is formed as material inside the planetary orbit is removed by PE, leaving only the outer disc to drive the migration of the giant planet. We investigate the impact of PE on giant planet migration and focus specifically on the case of transition discs with an evacuated cavity inside the planet location. This is important for determining under what circumstances PE is efficient at halting the migration of giant planets, thus affecting the final orbital distribution of a population of planets. For this purpose, we use 2D FARGO simulations to model the migration of giant planets in a range of primordial and transition discs subject to PE. The results are then compared to the standard prescriptions used to calculate the migration tracks of planets in 1D planet population synthesis models. The FARGO simulations show that once the disc inside the planet location is depleted of gas, planet migration ceases. This contradicts the results obtained by the impulse approximation, which predicts the accelerated inward migration of planets in discs that have been cleared inside the planetary orbit. These results suggest that the impulse approximation may not be suitable for planets embedded in transition discs. A better approximation that could be used in 1D models would involve halting planet migration once the material inside the planetary orbit is depleted of gas and the surface density at the 3:2 mean motion resonance location in the outer disc reaches a threshold value of $0.01\,\mathrm{g\,cm^{-2}}$., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures; accepted for publication in A&A

High resolution spectra of typical wind diagnostics ([OI] 6300 \r{A} and other forbidden emission lines) can often be decomposed into multiple components: high-velocity components with blueshifts up to several 100 km/s are usually attributed to fast jets, while narrow (NLVC) and broad (BLVC) low-velocity components are believed to trace slower disc winds. Under the assumption that the line-broadening is dominated by Keplerian rotation, several studies have found that the BLVCs should trace gas launched between 0.05 and 0.5 au and correlations between the properties of BLVCs and NLVCs have been interpreted as evidence for the emission tracing an extended MHD wind and not a photoevaporative wind. We calculated synthetic line profiles obtained from detailed photoionisation calculations of an X-ray photoevaporation model and a simple MHD wind model and analyzed the emission regions of different diagnostic lines and the resulting spectral profiles. The photoevaporation model reproduces most of the observed NLVCs but not the BLVCs or HVCs. The MHD model is able to reproduce all components but produces Keplerian double peaks at average inclinations that are rarely observed. The combination of MHD and photoevaporative winds could solve this problem. Our results suggest that the Gaussian decomposition does not allow for a clear distinction of flux from different wind regions and that the line broadening is often dominated by the velocity gradient in the outflow rather than by Keplerian rotation. The solid accretion rate, necessary to grow gas giant planetary cores within the disk lifetime, has been a major constraint for theories of planet formation. We tested the solid accretion rate efficiency on planetary cores of different masses embedded in their birth disk, by means of 3D radiation-hydrodynamics, where we followed the evolution of a swarm of embedded solids of different sizes. We found that using a realistic equation of state and radiative cooling, the disk at 5 au is able to cool efficiently and reduce its aspect ratio. As a result, the pebble isolation mass is reached before the core grows to 10 Earth masses, stopping efficiently the pebble flux and creating a transition disk. Moreover, the reduced isolation mass halts the solid accretion before the core reaches the critical mass, leading to a barrier to giant planet formation, and it explains the large abundance of super-Earth planets in the observed population., Comment: Published in A&A, 8 pages, 9 figures

The so-called transition discs provide an important tool to probe various mechanisms that might influence the evolution of protoplanetary discs and therefore the formation of planetary systems. One of these mechanisms is photoevaporation due to energetic radiation from the central star, which can in principal explain the occurrence of discs with inner cavities like transition discs. Current models, however, fail to reproduce a subset of the observed transition discs, namely objects with large measured cavities and vigorous accretion. For these objects the presence of (multiple) giant planets is often invoked to explain the observations. In our work we explore the possibility of X-ray photoevaporation operating in discs with different gas-phase depletion of carbon and show that the influence of photoevaporation can be extended in such low-metallicity discs. As carbon is one of the main contributors to the X-ray opacity, its depletion leads to larger penetration depths of X-rays in the disc and results in higher gas temperatures and stronger photoevaporative winds. We present radiation-hydrodynamical models of discs irradiated by internal X-ray+EUV radiation assuming Carbon gas-phase depletions by factors of 3,10 and 100 and derive realistic mass-loss rates and profiles. Photoevaporation of planet forming discs by high energy radiation from the central star is potentially a crucial mechanism for disc evolution and it may play an important role in the formation and evolution of planetary system. We present here a new generation of X-ray photoevaporation models for solar-type stars, based on a new set of hydrodynamical simulations, which account for stellar irradiation via a new, significantly improved, parameterisation of gas temperatures, based on detailed photoionisation and radiation transfer calculations. This is the first of a series of papers aiming at providing a library of models which cover the observed parameter space in stellar and disc mass, metallicity and stellar X-ray properties. We focus here on solar-type stars (0.7 M$_\odot$) with relatively low-mass discs (1% of the stellar mass) and explore the dependence of the wind mass loss rates on stellar X-ray luminosity. We model primordial discs as well as transition discs at various stages of evolution. Our 2D hydrodynamical models are then used to derive simple recipes for the mass loss rates that are suitable for inclusion in one-dimensional disc evolution and/or planet formation models typically employed for population synthesis studies. Line profiles from typical wind diagnostics ([OI] 6300 $\overset{\lower.5em\circ}{\mathrm{A}}$ and [NeII] 12.8 $\mu$m) are also calculated for our models and found to be roughly in agreement with previous studies. Finally, we perform a population study of transition discs by means of one-dimensional viscous evolution models including our new photoevaporation prescription and find that roughly a half of observed transition discs cavities and accretion rates could be reproduced by our models., Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures, published in MNRAS

Modern astronomy has finally been able to observe protoplanetary disks in reasonable resolution and detail, unveiling the processes happening during planet formation. These observed processes are understood under the framework of disk-planet interaction, a process studied analytically and modeled numerically for over 40 years. Long a theoreticians' game, the wealth of observational data has been allowing for increasingly stringent tests of the theoretical models. Modeling efforts are crucial to support the interpretation of direct imaging analyses, not just for potential detections but also to put meaningful upper limits on mass accretion rates and other physical quantities in current and future large-scale surveys. This white paper addresses the questions of what efforts on the computational side are required in the next decade to advance our theoretical understanding, explain the observational data, and guide new observations. We identified the nature of accretion, ab initio planet formation, early evolution, and circumplanetary disks as major fields of interest in computational planet formation. We recommend that modelers relax the approximations of alpha-viscosity and isothermal equations of state, on the grounds that these models use flawed assumptions, even if they give good visual qualitative agreement with observations. We similarly recommend that population synthesis move away from 1D hydrodynamics. The computational resources to reach these goals should be developed during the next decade, through improvements in algorithms and the hardware for hybrid CPU/GPU clusters. Coupled with high angular resolution and great line sensitivity in ground based interferometers, ELTs and JWST, these advances in computational efforts should allow for large strides in the field in the next decade., Comment: White paper submitted to the Astro2020 decadal survey

We investigate via numerical modeling the effects of two planets locked in resonance, and migrating outward, on the dust distribution of the natal circumstellar disk. We aim to test whether the dust distribution exhibits peculiar features arising from the interplay among the gravitational perturbations of the planets in resonance, the evolution of the gas, and its influence on the dust grains' dynamics. We focus on the 3:2 and 2:1 resonance, where the trapping may be caused by the convergent migration of a Jupiter- and Saturn-mass planet, preceding the common gap formation and ensuing outward (or inward) migration. Models show that a common gap also forms in the dust component -- similarly to what a single, more massive planet would generate -- and that outward migration leads to a progressive widening of the dust gap and to a decoupling from the gas gap. As the system evolves, a significantly wider gap is observed in the dust distribution, which ceases to overlap with the gas gap in the inner disk regions. At the outer edge of the gas gap, outward migration of the planets produces an over-density of dust particles, which evolve differently in the 3:2 and 2:1 resonances. For the 3:2, the dust trap at the gap's outer edge is partly efficient and a significant fraction of the grains filters through the gap. For the 2:1 resonance, the trap is more efficient and very few grains cross the gap, while the vast majority accumulate at the outer edge of the gap., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures. High energy radiation from a planet host star can have strong influence on the final habitability of a system through several mechanisms. In this context we have constructed a catalogue containing the X-ray luminosities, as well as basic stellar and planetary properties of all known stars hosting giant planets (> 0.1 Mjup) that have been observed by the Chandra X-ray Observatory, XMM-Newton and/or ROSAT. Specifically in this paper we present a first application of this catalogue to search for a possible imprint of X-ray photoevaporation of planet-forming discs on the present-day orbital distribution of the observed giant planets. We found a suggestive void in the semi-major axis, a, versus X-ray luminosity, Lx, plane, roughly located between a ~ 0.05-1 au and Lx ~10^27-10^29 erg/s, which would be expected if photoevaporation played a dominant role in the migration history of these systems. The growth process of proto-planets can be sped-up by accreting a large number of solid, pebble-sized objects that are still present in the protoplanetary disc. It is still an open question on how efficient this process works in realistic turbulent discs. Here, we investigate the accretion of pebbles in turbulent discs that are driven by the purely hydrodynamical vertical shear instability (VSI). For this purpose, we perform global three-dimensional simulations of locally isothermal, VSI turbulent discs with embedded protoplanetary cores from 5 to 100 $M_\oplus$ that are placed at 5.2 au distance from the star. In addition, we follow the evolution of a swarm of embedded pebbles of different size under the action of drag forces between gas and particles in this turbulent flow. Simultaneously, we perform a set of comparison simulations for laminar viscous discs where the particles experience stochastic kicks. For both cases, we measure the accretion rate onto the cores as a function of core mass and Stokes number ($\tau_s$) of the particles and compare it to recent MRI turbulence simulations. Overall the dynamic is very similar for the particles in the VSI turbulent disc and the laminar case with stochastic kicks. For the small mass planets (i.e. 5 and 10 $M_\oplus$), well-coupled particles with $\tau_s = 1$, which have a size of about one meter at this location, we find an accretion efficiency (rate of particles accreted over drifting inward) of about 1.6-3%. For smaller and larger particles this efficiency is higher. However, the fast inward drift for $\tau_s = 1$ particles makes them the most effective for rapid growth, leading to mass doubling times of about 20,000 yr. For masses between 10 and 30 $M_\oplus$ the core reaches the pebble isolation mass and the particles are trapped at the pressure maximum just outside of the planet, shutting off further particle accretion., Comment: 18 pages, accepted to A&A

In weakly ionized discs turbulence can be generated through the vertical shear instability (VSI). Embedded planets feel a stochastic component in the torques acting on them which can impact their migration. In this work we study the interplay between a growing planet embedded in a protoplanetary disc and the VSI-turbulence. We performed a series of three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations for locally isothermal discs with embedded planets in the mass range from 5 to 100 Earth masses. We study planets embedded in an inviscid disc that is VSI unstable, becomes turbulent and generates angular momentum transport with an effective $\alpha = 5 \cdot 10^{-4}$. This is compared to the corresponding viscous disc using exactly this $\alpha$-value. In general we find that the planets have only a weak impact on the disc turbulence. Only for the largest planet ($100 M_\oplus$) the turbulent activity becomes enhanced inside of the planet. The depth and width of a gap created by the more massive planets ($30, 100 M_\oplus$) in the turbulent disc equal exactly that of the corresponding viscous case, leading to very similar torque strengths acting on the planet, with small stochastic fluctuations for the VSI disc. At the gap edges vortices are generated that are stronger and longer lived in the VSI disc. Low mass planets (with $M_p \leq 10 M_\oplus$) do not open gaps in the disc in both cases but generate for the turbulent disc an over-density behind the planet that exerts a significant negative torque. This can boost the inward migration in VSI turbulent discs well above the Type I rate. We study the evolution of circumbinary disks under the gravitational influence of the binary using two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations to investigate the impact of disk and binary parameters on the dynamical aspects of the disk. To distinguish between physical and numerical effects we apply three hydrodynamical codes. First we analyse in detail numerical issues concerning the conditions at the boundaries and grid resolution. We then perform a series of simulations with different binary (eccentricity, mass ratio) and disk parameters (viscosity, aspect ratio) starting from a reference model with Kepler-16 parameters. Concerning the numerical aspects we find that the inner grid radius must be of the order of the binary semi-major axis, with free outflow conditions applied such that mass can flow onto the central binary. A closed inner boundary leads to unstable evolutions. We find that the inner disk turns eccentric and precesses for all investigated physical parameters. The precession rate is slow with periods ($T_\mathrm{prec}$) starting at around 500 binary orbits ($T_\mathrm{bin}$) for high viscosity and large $H/R$ where the inner hole is smaller and more circular. Reducing $\alpha$ and $H/R$ increases the gap size and $T_\mathrm{prec}$ reaches 2500 $T_\mathrm{bin}$. For varying binary mass ratios $q_\mathrm{bin}$ the gap size remains constant whereas $T_\mathrm{prec}$ decreases for increasing $q_\mathrm{bin}$. For varying binary eccentricities $e_\mathrm{bin}$ we find two separate branches in the gap size and eccentricity diagram. The bifurcation occurs at around $e_\mathrm{crit} \approx 0.18$ where the gap is smallest with the shortest $T_\mathrm{prec}$. For $e_\mathrm{bin}$ smaller and larger than $e_\mathrm{crit}$ the gap size and $T_\mathrm{prec}$ increase. Recently, the vertical shear instability (VSI) has become an attractive purely hydrodynamic candidate for the anomalous angular momentum transport required for weakly ionized accretion disks. In direct three-dimensional numerical simulations of VSI turbulence in disks, a meridional circulation pattern was observed that is opposite to the usual viscous flow behavior. Here, we investigate whether this feature can possibly be explained by an anisotropy of the VSI turbulence. Using three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations, we calculate the turbulent Reynolds stresses relevant for angular momentum transport for a representative section of a disk. We find that the vertical stress is significantly stronger than the radial stress. Using our results in viscous disk simulations with different viscosity coefficients for the radial and vertical direction, we find good agreement with the VSI turbulence for the stresses and meridional flow; this provides additional evidence for the anisotropy. The dispersal of the circumstellar discs of dust and gas surrounding young low- mass stars has important implications for the formation of planetary systems. Photo- evaporation from energetic radiation from the central object is thought to drive the dispersal in the majority of discs, by creating a gap which disconnects the outer from the inner regions of the disc and then disperses the outer disc from the inside-out, while the inner disc keeps draining viscously onto the star. In this Letter we show that the disc around TW Hya, the closest protoplanetary disc to Earth, may be the first object where a photoevaporative gap has been imaged around the time at which it is being created. Indeed the detected gap in the ALMA images is consistent with the expectations of X-ray photoevaporation models, thus not requiring the presence of a planet. The photoevaporation model is also consistent with a broad range of properties of the TW Hya system, e.g. accretion rate and the location of the gap at the onset of dispersal. We are observing, thanks to ALMA, the dust distribution in the region of active planet formation around young stars. This is a powerful tool to connect observations with theoretical models and improve our understandings of the processes at play. We want to test how a multi-planetary system shapes its birth disk and study the influence of the planetary masses and particle sizes on the final dust distribution. Moreover, we apply our model to the HL Tau system in order to obtain some insights on the physical parameters of the planets that are able to create the observed features. We follow the evolution of a population of dust particles, treated as Lagrangian particles, in two-dimensional, locally isothermal disks where two equal mass planets are present. The planets are kept in fixed orbits and they do not accrete mass. The outer planet plays a major role removing the dust particles in the co-orbital region of the inner planet and forming a particle ring which promotes the development of vortices respect to the single planetary case. The ring and gaps width depends strongly on the planetary mass and particle stopping times, and for the more massive cases the ring clumps in few stable points that are able to collect a high mass fraction. The features observed in the HL Tau system can be explained through the presence of several massive cores that shape the dust disk, where the inner planet(s) should have a mass on the order of 0.07 Jupiter masses and the outer one(s) on the order of 0.35 Jupiter masses. These values can be significantly lower if the disk mass turns out to be less than previously estimated. Decreasing the disk mass by a factor 10 we obtain similar gap widths for planets with a mass of 10 and 20 Earth masses respectively. We explore the dynamical evolution of a planet embedded in a disk surrounding a star part of a binary system where the orbital plane of the binary is significantly tilted respect to the initial disk plane. Our aim is to test whether the planet remains within the disk and continues to migrate towards the star in a Type I/II mode in spite of the secular perturbations of the companion star. This would explain observed exoplanets with significant inclination respect to the equatorial plane of their host star. We have used two different SPH codes, vine and phantom, to model the evolution of a system star+disk+planet and companion star with time. After an initial coupled evolution, the inclination of the disk and that of the planet begin to differ significantly. The period of oscillation of the disk inclination, respect to the initial plane, is shorter than that of the planet which evolves independently after about 10^4 yr following a perturbed N-body behavior. However, the planet keeps migrating towards the star because during its orbital motion it crosses the disk plane and the friction with the gas causes angular momentum loss. Disk and planet in a significantly inclined binary system are not dynamically coupled for small binary separations but evolve almost independently. The planet abandons the disk and, due to the onset of a significant mutual inclination, it interacts with the gas only when its orbit intersects the disk plane. Stellar flybys in star clusters are suspected to affect the orbital architecture of planetary systems causing eccentricity excitation and orbital misalignment between the planet orbit and the equatorial plane of the star. We explore whether the impulsive changes in the orbital elements of planets, caused by an hyperbolic stellar flyby, can be fully damped by the circumstellar disk surrounding the star. The time required to disperse stellar clusters is in fact comparable to circumstellar disk's lifetime. We have modelled in 3D a system made of a solar type star surrounded by a low density disk with a giant planet embedded in it approached on a hyperbolic encounter trajectory by a second star, of similar mass and with its own disk. We focus on extreme configurations where a very deep stellar flyby perturbs a Jovian planet on an external orbit. This allows to test in full the ability of the disk to erase the effects of the stellar encounter. We find that the amount of mass lost by the disk during the stellar flyby is less than in 2D models where a single disk was considered due to the mass exchange between the two disks at the encounter. The damping in eccentricity is slightly faster than in 2D models and it occurs on timescales of the order of a few kyr. The only trace of the flyby left in the planet system, after about 10^4 yr, is a small misalignment, lower than 9 degrees, between the star equatorial plane and the planet orbit. In a realistic model based on 3D simulations of star--planet--disk interactions, we find that stellar flybys cannot excite significant eccentricities and inclinations of planets in stellar clusters. The circumstellar disks hosting the planets damp on a short timescale all the step changes in the two orbital parameters produced during any stellar encounter. Circumstellar disks in binaries are perturbed by the companion gravity causing significant alterations of the disk morphology. Spiral waves due to the companion tidal force also develop in the vertical direction and affect the disk temperature profile. These effects may significantly influence the process of planet formation. We perform 3D numerical simulations of disks in binaries with different initial dynamical configurations and physical parameters. Our goal is to investigate their evolution and their propensity to grow planets. We use an improved version of the SPH code VINE modified to better account for momentum and energy conservation. The energy equation includes a flux--limited radiative transfer algorithm and the disk cooling is obtained via "boundary particles". We model a system made of star/disk + star/disk where the secondary star (and relative disk) is less massive than the primary. The numerical simulations performed for different values of binary separation and disk density show that the disk morphology is substantially affected by the companion perturbations. Trailing spiral shock waves develop when the stars approach their pericenter. Strong hydraulic jumps occur at the shock front creating breaking waves and a consistent mass stream between the two disks, significantly heating them. The high gas temperature may prevent the ice condensation by moving outward the "snow line". The hydraulic jumps may slow down or even halt the dust coagulation process. At apocenter these perturbations are reduced and the disks are cooled down and less eccentric. The strength of the hydraulic jumps, disk heating, and mass exchange depends on the binary separation, and for larger semi-major axes, the tidal spiral pattern is substantially reduced., Comment: 15 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Most stars form in embedded clusters. Stellar flybys may affect the orbital architecture of the systems by exciting the eccentricity and causing dynamical instability. Since, incidentally, the timescale over which a cluster loses its gaseous component and begins to disperse is comparable to the circumstellar disk lifetime, we expect that closer, and more perturbing, stellar flybys occur when the planets are still embedded in their birth disk. We investigate the effects of the disk on the dynamics of planets after the stellar encounter to test whether it can damp the eccentricity and return the planetary system to a non-excited state. We use the hydrodynamical code FARGO to study the disk+planet(s) system during and after the stellar encounter in the context of evolved disk models whose superficial density is 10 times lower than that of the Minimum Mass Solar Nebula. The numerical simulations show that the planet eccentricity, excited during a close stellar flyby, is damped on a short timescale (~ 10 Kyr) in spite of the disk low initial density and subsequent tidal truncation. This damping is effective also for a system of 3 giant planets and the effects of the dynamical instability induced by the passing star are quickly absorbed. If the circumstellar disk is still present around the star during a stellar flyby, a planet (or a planetary system) is returned to a non-excited state on a short timescale. This does not mean that stellar encounters do not affect the evolution of planets, but they do it in a subtle way with a short period of agitated dynamical evolution.
