- Abstract
Purpose: To investigate how EU related contents are represented in Portuguese upper secondary school textbooks of History and English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Design/methodology/approach: The study performs a textbook analysis on two History textbooks and three EFL textbooks to explore if and how EU related topics are addressed. The methodological approach was mainly qualitative, based on a content analysis of the textbooks, but also includes some quantitative data (e.g., number of paragraphs) to determine the importance given to European topics in each of the selected school subjects. Findings: EFL textbooks have a residual approach to EU topics that is mainly focused in students' mobility. History textbooks, while containing a significant amount of information about the EU, present it mainly in a nonconfrontational perspective and do not prioritize the development of students' critical thinking about the EU. Our data also points to a predominance of national level citizenship related content, with European citizenship being briefly and normatively presented to the students. Research limitations/implications: EFL is attended by almost 100% of students in the academic track of secondary education, but History is a curricular subject only available to 25-30% of the students; as such, our findings refer to a specific group. Practical implications: Textbooks should include more information about the actual problems and challenges of the EU to foster the development of students' critical thinking about the EU.

Democracies expect citizens to engage actively in public life by making decisions about political issues that are frequently ambiguous, with strong moral and emotional implications, and often subject to misinformation and manipulation. Strong critical thinking (CT) appears therefore as a crucial component of a reflective democratic citizenship. This study identifies sociopolitical topics that are relevant to secondary Portuguese students and explores the interplay between emotions and cognition in their moral-political decision-making. Participants in two rounds of focus group discussions were asked to choose one sociopolitical topic and to report their emotions about that topic; in the second round, they discussed an ethical-moral dilemma about the most selected topic. The students' emotions selection and their verbal explanations revealed that topics related to refugees, animal rights and environmental issues were the most engaging ones. The dilemma about refugees showed that a strong emotional engagement can lead to higher levels of conflict and that emotional ambivalence can have positive effects on CT. We conclude that pedagogical activities to educate critical citizens should explore social, humanitarian, and environmental issues, encouraging the expression of emotional ambivalence as a precursor to cognitive-moral conflict that is important to a truly engaging and reflective democratic citizenship education. - Abstract
Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) teachers face significant challenges to their personal and professional well-being that can influence the quality of their interactions with children. Despite this recognition, interventions exploring the potential of Positive Psychology and School-Wide Positive Behavior Support (SWPBS) to address the personal and professional well-being of ECEC teachers are lacking. In this paper, we present how a training program, theoretically grounded on the PERMA model and SWPBS approach, was delivered to 50 Portuguese ECEC teachers using an innovative coaching model, Positive Practice-based Group Coaching. The participants attended 10 on-site training sessions designed to explore the potential of group dynamics on self-reflection and problem-solving. Results indicate that the integration of the PERMA model and SWPBS approach was highly satisfactory and that a non-directive, flexible, and informal coaching style was crucial for the success of the implementation process. We discuss how Positive Practice-based Group Coaching can be useful for future professional development actions to promote the personal and professional well-being of professionals in ECEC. The main aim of this study is to explore early childhood teachers' social self-efficacy in Cyprus, Greece, and Portugal. In addition, this study examines the validity of the factorial structure of the Teachers' Social Self-Efficacy Scale (TSSES). A sample of 349 early childhood teachers across the three countries participated in this study. An exploratory analysis and then a confirmatory factor analysis were employed to reveal the structure of the TSSES. Configural and metric invariance were established for the one-factor structure of the TSSES. The results showed that teachers in Portugal and Cyprus experience high levels of social self-efficacy, whereas Greek teachers experience moderate to high levels of social self-efficacy. The TSSES seems to be a reliable instrument for assessing social self-efficacy beliefs. Possible implications for practice are also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This project aims to build and implement a talent retention model in an organization in the information technology sector focused on the development of technological products and services for companies in the mobility and transport industry. At the base of the elaboration of this project is the organization's need to be able to retain and motivate its most valuable asset, the human talent, at a time when the labor market lacks for qualified professionals and where the offer of new opportunities is exponential. The project was developed according to a qualitative approach, based on six semi-directive interviews, two focus groups and also document analysis. The coding and analysis of the interviews was done using MaxQDA software. The talent retention model was developed according to the talent identification matrix together with three fictional characters with different characteristics and behavior patterns. The identified retention strategies aim to meet the specific needs of a group of individuals working in the information technology industry, capable of creating, in the long term, better conditions for the company to be able to retain talent more effectively. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

- Abstract
The project of creating a common European citizenship requires that the educational systems from the different member-states of the European Union (EU) contribute to the education of European citizens that are critical and active regarding the objective of continuing and perfecting the European project. In Portugal, previous studies of upper secondary education have shown serious shortcomings, both in the curricula and the textbooks of several subjects, in the pedagogical approaches suggested for the process of teaching/learning about this European dimension. In this article, we have tried to find out which kind of extra and co-curricular activities the schools have been organizing to fill the previously mentioned shortcomings. To that end, we have interviewed 16 teachers from 4 different schools of the Portuguese upper secondary educational system. Their accounts have allowed us to identify several kinds of extra and co-curricular activities that have been implemented by their schools in order to increase their students´ level of knowledge and reflexiveness regarding the EU. The analysis of these accounts has also allowed us to identify both the potential and limitations involved in developing these activities and to make some general recommendations towards improving the conditions for the schools to give a more efficient contribution to the objective of consolidating a active and critical European citizenship., O projeto de criação de uma cidadania europeia comum pede aos sistemas educativos dos vários estados-membros da União Europeia (UE) que contribuam para a formação de cidadãos europeus críticos/as e ativos/as relativamente ao objetivo de prossecução e aperfeiçoamento do projeto europeu.

The two decades that separate the two World Wars were a particularly intense period in history, full of such great contradictions that, a hundred years later, continue to challenge us. This thematic dossier is dedicated to this period of great illusions about building peace and recognizing the right to self-determination, revolutions drowned in blood, the anti-colonial surge, political massification. We have gathered here six different papers whose focus balances between the demand for more democracy and the evident failure of the democratization process of the liberal system, across very different political geographies and national contexts. As we are presently facing a very obvious crisis of the liberal-democratic regimes that resurfaces a hundred years later, revisiting those interwar years, much more than a simple intellectual exercise, can be of use to learn about the circumstances in which democracy slides into crisis and on the perception of how authoritarianism advances. publishersversion published

- Abstract
WP9 of the CATCH-EyoU project proposes a school-based socially innovative intervention that involves students and teachers. It examines how young people engage in social issues having local and European relevance, combining a participatory approach, community analysis, and structured dialogue with public authorities. The dataset contains the national report with the main results of the implementation of this intervention in the Portuguese contexts. The transcriptions and analyses of qualitative data (focus groups, interviews) contained in the report serves as the underlying data of the following scientific paper accepted for publication in the journal “Psicologia di Comunità” (https://www.francoangeli.it/riviste/Sommario.aspx?IDRivista=139&lingua=it): Joana Cruz, Carla Malafaia, Filipe Piedade, José Eduardo Silva, Isabel Menezes (2019). Promoting European active citizenship: A participatory intervention towards the politicisation of youth social concerns. Psicologia di comunità. The data has been collected from an upper secondary school in Portugal, involved in the WP9 EU citizenship education intervention. - Abstract
How does academic literature across various disciplines conceptualize and empirically address active citizenship? What are the potential benefits and dangers of dominant epistemological and ideological perspectives on ‘good citizenship’? Our paper engages with these questions by drawing on literature across 12 disciplines. We used textual analysis software TLAB to quantify and visualize co-occurrences, word associations and thematic clusters in the abstracts of 770 texts gathered by eight country teams and original in-depth qualitative analyses of ideological positions and discourses taken up in a selection of key texts across the corpus. Our paper elaborates the findings: that many of the key themes surrounding young people and citizenship in the literature share little or no connection with European citizenship; that there is a significant gap in the literature on young European citizens; and that studies connected to internal, status-based factors connected to citizenship are far more prevalent than those examining external, practice-based factors or dissidence and dissent. Our conclusions examine the potential normative implications of the disjuncture between dominant conceptions and critical accounts of youth active citizenship., Funding Agency:FCT-Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation BD/123619/2016, Catch-EyoU

- Abstract
This work tries to uncover if, regarding that Portugal was a colonial power, the Portuguese journalistic elites feared, within the 1930-1933 period, that the Nazi Germany could represent a threat to the Portuguese colonial Empire in the future. This article includes results from the investigation that was presented in the Masters dissertation under the title: «A caminho do Estado Novo e do Terceiro Reich: a "Lição de Hitler" e a "Lição de Salazar" na imprensa portuguesa (1930-1933)».
Findings: EFL textbooks have a residual approach to EU topics that is mainly focused in students’ mobility. History textbooks, while containing a significant amount of information about the EU, present it mainly in a non-confrontational perspective and do not prioritize the development of students’ critical thinking about the EU. Practical implications: Textbooks should include more information about the actual problems and challenges of the EU to foster the development of students’ critical thinking about the EU., JSSE - Journal of Social Science Education, Vol 17 No 2 (2018): European Identity and Citizenship in Textbooks and Educational Media

Our conclusions examine the potential normative implications of the disjuncture between dominant conceptions and critical accounts of youth active citizenship.
