We present our investigations of SU($N$) adjoint QCD in two dimensions with one Majorana fermion on the lattice. We determine the relevant parameter range for the simulations with Wilson fermions and present results for Polyakov loop, chiral condensate, and string tension. In the theory with massive fermions, all observables we checked show qualitative agreement between numerical lattice data and theory, while the massless limit is more subtle since chiral and non-invertible symmetry of the continuum theory are explicitly broken by lattice regularization. In thermal compactification, we observe $N$ perturbative vacua for the holonomy potential at high-$T$ with instanton events connecting them, and a unique vacuum at low-$T$. At finite-$N$, this is a cross-over and it turns to a phase transition at large-$N$ thermodynamic limit. In circle compactification with periodic boundary conditions, we observe a unique center-symmetric minimum at any radius. In continuum, the instantons in the thermal case carry zero modes (for even $N$) and indeed, in the lattice simulations, we observe that chiral condensate is dominated by instanton centers, where zero modes are localized. We present lattice results on the issue of confinement vs. screening in the theory and comment on the roles of chiral symmetry and non-invertible symmetry., Comment: 33 pages, 22 figures

We extend our analysis of bound states in $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory by the consideration of baryonic operators, which are composed of three gluino fields. The corresponding states are similar to the baryons in QCD, but due to the difference between gluino and quark fields, their properties and the fermion line contractions involved in their correlation functions are different from QCD. In this work, we first explain the derivation of these operators and the contractions needed in numerical calculations of their correlators. In contrast to QCD the correlators contain a spectacle piece, which requires methods for all-to-all propagators. We provide a first estimate of the two-point function and the mass of the lightest baryonic state in $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory.

We review our efforts in investigating gauge theories with fermions in the adjoint representation of the gauge group by means of numerical simulations. These theories have applications in possible extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics, being a core part of supersymmetric gauge theories. Supersymmetry on the lattice is explicitly broken by the gluino mass and lattice artifacts. However, it can be restored in the continuum limit by fine tuning the parameters based on the renormalized Ward identities. On the renormalization step not only the mass but also the renormalization of the supercurrent needs to be addressed. Here we present a lattice investigation to obtain the renormalization factors of the supercurrent for $\mathcal{N}$=1 Super-Yang Mills theory in a gauge invariant renormalization scheme. We also provide the conversion factors which are necessary in order to translate our results to the more standard $\overline{\text{MS}}$ scheme., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures. In this work, we study the nonperturbative renormalization of the supercurrent operator in $\mathcal{N} = 1$ Supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory, using a gauge-invariant renormalization scheme (GIRS). The proposed prescription addresses successfully the unwanted mixing of the supercurrent with other operators of equal or lower dimension, which respect the same global symmetries. This mixing is introduced by the unavoidable breaking of supersymmetry on the lattice. In GIRS all gauge-noninvariant operators, which mix with the supercurrent, are excluded from the renormalization procedure. The one remaining mixing operator is accessible by numerical simulations. We present results for the renormalization of the supercurrent using a GIRS scheme. We also compute at one-loop order the conversion matrix which relates the nonperturbative renormalization factors in GIRS to the reference scheme $\bar{\rm MS}$., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures and 1 table

In this work we investigate the infrared behaviour of a Yang-Mills theory coupled to a massless fermion in the adjoint representation of the gauge group SU(2). This model has many interesting properties, corresponding to the $\mathcal{N}=2$ Super-Yang-Mills theory without scalars and in the recent years there has been an increasing interest toward understanding whether confinement and fermion condensation occur at low energy. We simulate the theory on the lattice close to the massless limit using the overlap discretization of the fermion action, allowing a precise and clean study of the chiral symmetry breaking pattern and of the fermion condensate. We present results for the scale setting, the condensate and the running of the coupling constant through the gradient flow -- all of them pointing to a theory without an infrared fixed point and remaining confined deep in the infrared regime., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

Gauge theories with fermions in adjoint and fundamental representations are relevant for many different applications including composite Higgs models and general aspects of the confinement problem. We present first results from simulations of SU(2) gauge theory with two Dirac fermions in the fundamental representation and one adjoint flavor. $\mathcal{N} = 1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory describes gluons interacting with gluinos, which are spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Majorana particles in the adjoint representation of the gauge group. In addition to glueballs and mesonic bound states, the theory contains color neutral bound states of three gluinos, which are analogous to baryons in QCD. In this work we study the renormalization of the SUSY Noether current in Supersymmetric $\mathcal{N}$ = 1 Yang-Mills (SYM) theory on the lattice. In particular, we study the mixing of the current with all other compatible operators of dimension 7/2 and 5/2, leading from the lattice-regularized to the $\overline{\rm MS}$-renormalized operator basis. We perform our task in two ways: (a) We compute, in dimensional regularization, the conversion factors relating the $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme to an intermediate gauge-invariant coordinate-space scheme. In this second scheme, renormalization can be performed via lattice simulations. This could help to investigate the breaking of SUSY on the lattice and strategies towards simulations of supersymmetric QCD. Here we present some preliminary numerical results. The mass anomalous dimension is determined in SU(2) gauge theory coupled to $N_f$ fermions in the adjoint representation for $N_f = 2$, $3/2$, $1$ and $1/2$, where half-integer flavor numbers correspond to Majorana fermions. The numerical method is based on gradient flow. The results show near-conformal behavior for $N_f = 2$, $3/2$ and $1$. Particular emphasis is placed on $N_f = 2$, which is relevant for a strongly interacting extension of the Standard Model and has been studied in several previous investigations. We check whether the method is able to resolve discrepancies in earlier results for this theory. In this article we summarize our efforts in simulating Yang-Mills theories coupled to matter fields transforming under the fundamental and adjoint representations of the gauge group. In the context of composite Higgs scenarios, gauge theories with mixed representation fields have been suggested to describe the fundamental interactions well beyond the electroweak unification scale, and they are also closely related to supersymmetric QCD. In addition, they are studied as deformations of theories with pure adjoint matter in the context of adiabatic continuity. We provide some first results for bare parameter tuning and interdependence of the two representations. We determine the magnetic susceptibility of thermal QCD matter by means of first principles lattice simulations using staggered quarks with physical masses. A novel method is employed that only requires simulations at zero background field, thereby circumventing problems related to magnetic flux quantization. After a careful continuum limit extrapolation, diamagnetic behavior (negative susceptibility) is found at low temperatures and strong paramagnetism (positive susceptibility) at high temperatures. We revisit the decomposition of the magnetic susceptibility into spin- and orbital angular momentum-related contributions. The spin term -- related to the normalization of the photon lightcone distribution amplitude at zero temperature -- is calculated non-perturbatively and extrapolated to the continuum limit. Having access to both the full magnetic susceptibility and the spin term, we calculate the orbital angular momentum contribution for the first time. The results reveal the opposite of what might be expected based on a free fermion picture. In $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, regularised on a space-time lattice, in addition to the breaking by the gluino mass term, supersymmetry is broken explicitly by the lattice regulator. In addition to the parameter tuning in the theory, the supersymmetric Ward identities can be used as a tool to investigate lattice artefacts as well as to check whether supersymmetry can be recovered in the chiral and continuum limits. In this paper we present the numerical results of an analysis of the supersymmetric Ward identities for our available gauge ensembles at different values of the inverse gauge coupling $\beta$ and of the hopping parameter $\kappa$. We summarize our investigations of several aspects of $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory. We present our final results for SU(3) $\mathcal{N}=1$ SYM simulated with Wilson fermions. We also discuss the first test of the simulations of the theory with overlap gluinos. We compute the renormalization group flow of the mass anomalous dimension in adjoint QCD with $N_{f}=1$, $3/2$, and 2 Dirac fermions, using the gradient flow. Preliminary results are in agreement with at least a near-conformal scenario in all cases. At the largest flavor numbers we obtain the strongest indication for an IR conformal fixed point scenario. Moreover, we provide results for the thermal phase transitions in SU(3) supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. The physical particles in supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory (SYM) are bound states of gluons and gluinos. We have determined the masses of the lightest bound states in SU(3) $\mathcal{N}=1$ SYM. Our simulations cover a range of different lattice spacings, which for the first time allows an extrapolation to the continuum limit. Our results show the formation of a supermultiplet of bound states, which provides a clear evidence for unbroken supersymmetry., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

The realization of center and chiral symmetries in $\mathcal{N}=1$ super Yang-Mills theory (SYM) is investigated on a four-dimensional Euclidean lattice by means of Monte Carlo methods. At zero temperature this theory is expected to confine external fundamental charges and to have a non-vanishing gaugino condensate, which breaks the non-anomalous Z$_{2\textrm{N}_{c}}$ chiral symmetry. In previous studies at finite temperatures, the phase transitions corresponding to deconfinement and chiral restoration were observed to occur at roughly the same critical temperature for SU(2) gauge group. We find further evidences for this observation from new measurements at smaller lattice spacings using the fermion gradient flow, and we discuss the agreement of our findings with conjectures from superstring theory. The implementation of the gradient flow technique allows us also to estimate, for the first time, the condensate at zero temperatures and zero gaugino mass with Wilson fermions., Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures, corrected figures and extended references

We have calculated the masses of bound states numerically in N = 1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with gauge group SU(2). Using the suitably optimised variational method with an operator basis consisting of smeared Wilson loops and mesonic operators, we are able to obtain the masses of the ground states and first excited states in the scalar, pseudoscalar and spin-1/2 sectors. Extrapolated to the continuum limit, the corresponding particles appear to be approximately mass degenerate and to fit into the predicted chiral supermultiplets. The extended operator basis including both glueball-like and mesonic operators leads to improved results compared to earlier studies, and moreover allows us to investigate the mixing content of the physical states, which we compare to predictions in the literature., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures. v2: small correction of author names and acknowledgments

Many exotic charmonium resonances have been identified recently in experiment, however their nature and properties are mostly unknown. Algorithmic and theoretical progress in lattice calculations has enabled reliable numerical investigation of the spectrum below the strong decay threshold, while the study of charmonium resonances remains an open challenge. The main difficulty to overcome is the presence of many open decay channels which are coupled together, resulting in a complex finite volume quantization condition. We report on our recent progress towards the determination of single-channel and coupled-channel scattering matrices in the scalar and vector channels on CLS ensembles. The spectrum of charmonium resonances contains a number of unanticipated states along with several conventional quark-model excitations. The hadrons of different quantum numbers $J^P$ appear in a fairly narrow energy band, where $J^P$ refers to the spin-parity of a hadron at rest. This poses a challenge for Lattice QCD studies of (coupled-channel) meson-meson scattering aimed at the determination of scattering amplitudes and resonance pole positions. A wealth of information for this purpose can be obtained from the lattice spectra in frames with nonzero total momentum. These are particularly dense since hadrons with different $J^P$ contribute to any given lattice irreducible representation. This is because $J^P$ is not a good quantum number in flight, and also because the continuum symmetry is reduced on the lattice. In this paper we address the assignment of the underlying continuum $J^P$ quantum numbers to charmonia in flight using a $N_f = 2 + 1$ CLS ensemble. As a first step, we apply the single-hadron approach, where only interpolating fields of quark-antiquark type are used. The approach follows techniques previously applied to the light meson spectrum by the Hadron Spectrum Collaboration. The resulting spectra of charmonia with assigned $J^P$ will provide valuable information for the parameterization of (resonant) amplitudes in future determinations of resonance properties with lattice QCD., Comment: 19 pages, 17 figures, Version published in Physical Review D

In $\mathcal{N}$=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory the superpartner of the gluon is the gluino, which is a spin 1/2 Majorana particle in the adjoint representation of the gauge group. Combining three gluinos, it is possible to form colour neutral bound states, analogous to baryons in QCD. The correlation functions of the corresponding baryonic operators contain a contribution represented by a `sunset diagram', and in addition, unlike in QCD, another contribution represented by a `spectacle diagram'. Composite operators of bare fermion fields evolved along a trajectory on field space by means of flow equations are multiplicatively renormalized. Therefore, even in the case of Wilson fermions, the renormalization of expectation values of fermion operators can be drastically simplified on the lattice. We measure the gluino condensate in $\mathcal{N}$=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory at non-zero temperatures by means of the gradient flow. The non-vanishing expectation value of the gluino condensate up to a certain critical temperature is a signal of chiral symmetry breaking, in agreement with theoretical conjectures on the vacuum structure of the theory. This talk is an overview of our recent investigations of supersymmetric and near conformal gauge theories. We have studied extensively $\mathcal{N}=1$ super Yang-Mills theory, most recently with the gauge group SU(3). In addition we have investigated theories that show indications for a conformal behavior at an infrared fixed point. We have included a mixed fundamental and adjoint fermion action setup in our studies. This work is a step towards merging the ideas that arise from semi-classical methods in continuum QFT with analytic/numerical lattice field theory. In this context, we consider Yang-Mills theories coupled to fermions in the adjoint representation. These theories have the remarkable property that confinement and discrete chiral symmetry breaking can persist at weak coupling on small (non-thermal) $\mathbb R^3 \times S^1$. This work presents a lattice investigation of Yang-Mills with one adjoint Majorana fermion, $\mathcal N=1$ super Yang-Mills, and opens the prospect to understand a number of non-perturbative phenomena, such as the mechanism of confinement, mass gap, chiral and center symmetry realizations both in lattice and continuum analytically. We study the compactification of this theory on the lattice with periodic and thermal boundary conditions. We provide numerical evidence for the conjectured absence of the phase transitions with periodic boundary conditions for sufficiently light lattice fermions (stability of center-symmetry), suppression of the chiral transition, and also provide a diagnostic for abelian vs. non-abelian confinement, based on per-site Polyakov loop eigenvalue distribution functions. In numerical and perturbative investigations we identify the role of the lattice artefacts that become relevant in the very small radius regime, and resolve some puzzles in the naive comparison between continuum and lattice., Comment: 38 pages, 12 figures

In numerical investigations of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on a lattice, the supersymmetric Ward identities are valuable for finding the critical value of the hopping parameter and for examining the size of supersymmetry breaking by the lattice discretisation. In this article we present an improved method for the numerical analysis of supersymmetric Ward identities, which takes into account the correlations between the various observables involved. We present the first complete analysis of supersymmetric Ward identities in $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with gauge group SU(3). The results show that lattice artefacts scale to zero as $O(a^2)$ towards the continuum limit in agreement with theoretical expectations., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, revised version as being published

In this article we summarise our results from numerical simulations of $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with gauge group SU(3). We use the formulation of Curci and Veneziano with clover-improved Wilson fermions. The masses of various bound states have been obtained at different values of the gluino mass and gauge coupling. Extrapolations to the limit of vanishing gluino mass indicate that the bound states form mass-degenerate supermultiplets., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures

In this work we present the results of a numerical investigation of SU(2) gauge theory with N_f = 3/2 flavours of fermions, corresponding to 3 Majorana fermions, which transform in the adjoint representation of the gauge group. At two values of the gauge coupling, the masses of bound states are considered as a function of the fundamental fermion mass, represented by the PCAC quark mass. The scaling of bound states masses indicates an infrared conformal behaviour of the theory. We obtain estimates for the fixed-point value of the mass anomalous dimension $\gamma^{\ast}$ from the scaling of masses and from the scaling of the mode number of the Wilson-Dirac operator. The difference of the estimates at the two gauge couplings should be due to scaling violations and lattice spacing effects. The introduction of a space-time lattice as a regulator of field theories breaks symmetries associated with continuous space-time, i.e.\ Poincar{\'e} invariance and supersymmetry. A non-zero gluino mass in the supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory causes an additional soft breaking of supersymmetry. We study $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory (SYM) on the lattice. The non-perturbative nature of supersymmetric field theories is still largely unknown. Similarly to QCD, SYM is confining and contains strongly bound states. Applying the variational method together with different smearing techniques we extract masses of the lightest bound states such as gluino-glue, glueball and mesonic states. Non-Abelian gauge theories with fermions transforming in the adjoint representation of the gauge group (AdjQCD) are a fundamental ingredient of many models that describe the physics beyond the Standard Model. Two relevant examples are N=1 Supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory and Minimal Walking Technicolor, which are gauge theories coupled to one adjoint Majorana and two adjoint Dirac fermions, respectively. While confinement is a property of N=1 SYM, Minimal Walking Technicolor is expected to be infrared conformal. We study the propagators of ghost and gluon fields in the Landau gauge to compute the running coupling in the MiniMom scheme. We analyze several different ensembles of lattice Monte Carlo simulations for the SU(2) adjoint QCD with Nf=1/2, 1, 3/2, and 2 Dirac fermions. We show how the running of the coupling changes as the number of interacting fermions is increased towards the conformal window., Comment: 28 pages, 12 figures

In this work we present the results of our investigation about the thermodynamics of SU(2) gauge theory. We employ a Symanzik improved action to reduce strongly the discretisations effects, and we use the scaling relations to take into account the finite volume effects close to the critical temperature. We determine the beta-function for this particular theory and we use it in the determination of different thermodynamic observables. Finally we compare our results with previous works where only the standard Wilson action was considered. We confirm the relevance of using the improved action to access easily the correct continuum thermodynamics of the theory., Comment: 32 pages, 22 figures. We summarize our results concerning the spectrum and mass anomalous dimension of SU(2) gauge theories with various numbers of fermions in the adjoint representation, where each Majorana fermion corresponds effectively to half a Dirac flavour $N_f$. The most relevant examples for extensions of the standard model are supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory ($N_f=1/2$) and Minimal Walking Technicolour ($N_f=2$). In addition to these theories we will also consider the cases of $N_f=1$ and $N_f=3/2$. The results comprise the particle spectrum of glueballs, triplet and singlet mesons, and possible fractionally charged spin half particles. In this work we present the results of our investigation of \su{2} gauge theory with two Dirac fermions in the adjoint representation (aQCD2), which belongs to the class of strongly interacting gauge theories that are of basic interest for extensions of the Standard Model. We have done numerical lattice simulations of this theory at two different values of the gauge coupling and several fermion masses. Our results include the particle spectrum and the mass anomalous dimension. The spectrum contains new exotic fermion-gluon states and flavour-singlet mesons. The mass anomalous dimension is determined from the scaling of the masses and the mode number. The remnant dependence of the universal mass ratios and mass anomalous dimension on the gauge coupling indicates the relevance of scaling corrections, such that earlier estimations for the universal fixed point value of the mass anomalous dimension are incomplete without their inclusion., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures; version submitted to Phys. Supersymmetry provides a well-established theoretical framework for extensions of the standard model of particle physics and the general understanding of quantum field theories. We summarise here our investigations of N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with SU(2) gauge symmetry using the non-perturbative first-principles method of numerical lattice simulations. The strong interactions of gluons and their superpartners, the gluinos, lead to confinement, and a spectrum of bound states including glueballs, mesons, and gluino-glueballs emerges at low energies. For unbroken supersymmetry these particles have to be arranged in supermultiplets of equal masses. In lattice simulations supersymmetry can only be recovered in the continuum limit since it is explicitly broken by the discretisation. We present the first continuum extrapolation of the mass spectrum of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. The results are consistent with the formation of supermultiplets and the absence of non-perturbative sources of supersymmetry breaking. Theories with fermions in the adjoint representation have several interesting applications in extensions of the standard model. The conformal window for these theories is of particular interest for technicolour extensions. We present here our newest results for the spectrum of $N_f=2$ adjoint QCD and compare them with the predictions for a conformal behaviour. The comparison with supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, investigated with the same methods, will help to distinguish more clearly the conformal and the confining scenario. The spectrum includes additional fermionic states that are not present in QCD. We provide results for the mass of these states and discuss their phenomenological relevance. The spectrum of the lightest bound states in N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with SU(2) gauge group, calculated on the lattice, is presented. The masses have first been extrapolated towards vanishing gluino mass and then to the continuum limit. Recently a new method to set the scale in lattice gauge theories, based on the gradient flow generated by the Wilson action, has been proposed, and the systematic errors of the new scales t0 and w0 have been investigated by various groups. The Wilson flow provides also an interesting alternative smoothing procedure in particular useful for the measurement of the topological charge as a pure gluonic observable. We show the viability of this method for N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory by analysing the configurations produced by the DESY-Muenster collaboration. For increasing flow time the topological charge quickly approaches near-integer values. The topological susceptibility has been measured for different fermion masses and its value is observed to approach zero in the chiral limit. Finally, the relation between the scale defined by the Wilson flow and the topological charge has been investigated, demonstrating a correlation between these two quantities., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures
