Oral piercing is an emerging trend among the youth in the present times. It is a popular yet bizarre method of body art and is considered a way to display one’s cool personality. The piercing procedure is often painful and carries several complications of the oral tissues such as profuse bleeding, damage to the nerves and vital structures, infections, dislodgement and aspiration of the jewelry and chances of chocking. Dental practitioners are encountering increasing number of cases with various oral and dental complications of this practice. Thus, a comprehensive information about the possible risks and their management is the need of the hour. Objective: To demonstrate the efficacy of the ulcer piercing procedure, which allows constant cleansing of the ulcer and facilitates a positive pressure irrigation of any pierced hidden tracts, in order to reduce the negative impact of stasis on wound healing. Method: We designed a surgical procedure of ulcer piercing and drainage with a silastic tube, which allows positive pressure irrigation of any pierced tracts. This procedure was performed in a continuous series of 25 selected diabetic patients affected by a Wagner stage 3 ulcer of the toe (n=16), metatarsal midfoot (n=5) and plantar Charcot foot (n=4), and with adequate foot arterial blood supply. Results: Within 6 months of the ulcer piercing procedure, 23/25 of ulcers had completely healed. In two further cases, the ulcer piercing ring was still in place after 3 and 5 months, progressively healing with no active signs of infection. Conclusion: Taking into consideration the advantages and the lack of side effects afforded by this procedure, ulcer piercing represents a small but effective step towards an easier and safer approach to treating complicated diabetic neuropathic foot ulcers with adequate arterial blood supply. The application of body piercing is popular among young people, who consider it as a sign of marginality, beauty, or group identity. Piercing procedure is observed to cause a large number of complications such as infections, pain, inflammatory reactions, bleeding, dental fractures or fissures, and gingival damage, etc., mostly in young individuals. Hizma is a traditional body ornament worn by Anatolian women via a piercing procedure. Herein, we describe a papule of nose mimicking pyogenic granuloma as an uncommon complication of Hizma.

Background The popularity of body piercing procedures is increasing around the world. The trend for body ornamentation is not free from risks. The percentage of various complications following such procedures is growing. The aim of this paper is to present a rare complication after earlobe piercing, which happened to a child. Materials and methods A 7-year-old girl was admitted to the Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery complaining of inflammatory lesions, caused by the presence of foreign bodies in both of her earlobes, which developed after the body piercing procedure. Her earlobes had been pierced in a beauty parlor six weeks earlier. Results With regard to the child’s age, the embedded parts of the earrings were removed in the operating theatre. In our description, the hind parts of the earrings started to embed five weeks after the piercing procedure. Too strong and constant pressure caused by fixing clips led to skin ischemia, followed by inflammation and decubitus ulcer, and consequently to the penetration of clips into the earlobes. Conclusions Complications after body piercing are observed in adults, as well as in children, in whom the decision of piercing performance should be carefully considered and rather postponed until self care is achievable.

Body piercing has become increasingly popular in Western countries, especially among young people. However, not everyone is aware of its potential risks, which may develop local and systemic complications shortly after, or long after the piercing procedure. Given that the oral cavity is one of the most frequent sites for piercing placement, the aim of this paper is to familiarise the oral healthcare professional with oral piercing and its possible sequelae in order to educate patients prior to and after piercing practices and address any complications that may arise.
