2. Innovative solutions for local energy systems, a transdisciplinary approach.

- Abstract
The energy community movement has grown considerably over the past ten years. Energy communities are also expanding their activities. However, room for new energy projects is limited because of grid congestion. Therefore, citizen energy communities (CECs) are looking for ways to reduce the pressure on the grid. Against this background we ask what new roles renewable energy communities can play in grid governance. What opportunities are available to store produced electricity or to balance electricity on a neighborhood level? Are these solutions economically and technically feasible? Our article draws on a recent research project on innovative community energy services in the Netherlands. In three case studies, we investigated local solutions to balance energy production and consumption. We organized workshops and webinars for CECs and carried out interviews and technical studies. Theoretically, we use Social Movement Theory (SMT) to understand the community energy movement. Furthermore, we employ Large Technical Systems (LTS) theories about the lifecycle of infrastructures. We investigated the technical, organizational, and economic aspects of these solutions, as well as skills and knowledge. We conclude that the community energy movement is expanding its activities to new functions in the energy system, but economic feasibility is not yet within reach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Citizens are set to play an active role in the energy transition by transforming from ‘passive’ consumers to ‘active’ prosumers. Renewable Energy Communities (RECs) are envisioned as modes of collective prosumership by citizens under the Renewable Energy Directive of 2018 (RED II). A holistic understanding of RECs is essential to identify the benefits and challenges of collective prosumership. RECs have been the topic of several modelling studies, but a single model that simulates RECs from an integrated perspective - combining technical, economic and ecological analysis - is absent. Wide variability in the indicators discourages comparison of the results across studies. This article builds on the existing knowledge by proposing an integrated model to undertake a multi-disciplinary assessment of a potential REC. First, the proposed model analyses the technical possibilities of collective prosumership using energy flow analysis based on consumption and generation profiles. Second, the model evaluates the economic impacts of prosumership from two perspectives: from the consumers’ perspective (in terms of the annual cost of energy consumption) and from an investor’s perspective (in terms of the net present value of the investment). Thirdly, the model quantifies the annual greenhouse gas emissions of energy consumption (expressed in CO2 equivalent) to evaluate the ecological impact of prosumership. Lastly, a set of key performance indicators (KPIs) are proposed that can be used to interpret and compare the results of simulations and are mapped to the actors in the REC in line with their objectives. The proposed approach offers a single, replicable model that can be used to simulate RECs in the different Member States of the European Union. The KPIs can be used to compare the impact of combinations of various prosumership activities within the same REC or to compare two different RECs on the benefits offered vis-a-vis the investments incurred. The KPIs also offer insights into the aligning and conflicting objectives of the stakeholders of the REC.

Renewable Energy Communities (RECs) have been defined as modes of collective prosumership under the Renewable Energy Directive (RED II). We evaluate the benefits offered by RECs and the barriers and enablers impacting their uptake. Germany is taken as a case study for a novel multi-disciplinary assessment of a potential REC intended as a climate-neutral, mixed-use district. We found that energy cooperatives may not be suited to form RECs, but the future may see an uptake of innovative organizational structures such as the Consumer Stock Ownership Plan. It has been shown that a high degree of prosumership can provide technical and economic benefits with maximum greenhouse gas savings of 35% and a maximum self-consumption share of 61% compared to no prosumership. The REC has a negative Net Present Value (NPV) after 25 years of operation and lacks financial attractiveness. A positive NPV is only possible by using the cost savings from prosumership to recoup the investments faster. RECs are a promising mode of citizen participation in the energy transition; however, for their application in Germany, together with the currently missing regulatory allowance of sharing energy between small-scale parties over a public grid, dedicated subsidies, one-time grants or price support for operators are needed.

“Op een serieuze manier maar ook spelenderwijs samen met bedrijven, politici en burgers mogelijkheden voor duurzame energie verkennen”. Communicatie is heel belangrijk bij het verkrijgen van draagvlak voor de energietransitie. Om draagvlak te genereren is een proces nodig waar stakeholders, geholpen met inzicht in feiten, gefocust kunnen werken aan oplossingen. Hiervoor is binnen de Hanzehogeschool een proces ontwikkeld op basis van “serious gaming” die veel potentie heeft. Het resultaat van dit proces “the We-Energy Game” is al meer dan 350 keer gespeeld met gemeentes, energie coöperaties, bedrijven en bewoners.Vanuit meerdere sessies met de “We-Energy game” komt er een duidelijke maatschappelijke vraag naar een planningstool naar boven vanuit de vele gemeentes, instanties en bedrijven die deel hebben genomen. Een planningstool die meer duidelijkheid geeft in feitelijke gegevens, bijvoorbeeld; de totale vraag van een regio, de productie van duurzame bronnen, de kosten en de reductie van CO2 emissies. Daarom willen we binnen dit project de ontwikkelen van een planningstool genaamd “We-Energy Tool” verkennen. Binnen dit project gaan we vanuit de Hanzehogeschool Groningen samen met bedrijven, provincies, gemeentes, en lokale energie coöperaties werken aan een concept planningstool bruikbaar voor diepgaande planningssessies of voor voorlichtingsbijeenkomsten voor het verkrijgen van draagvlak. Deze Tool moet inzicht gaan geven in het ruimtelijk perspectief door gebruik te maken van Geo Information Systems (digitale landkaart) zodat duurzame energiebronnen op de kaart geplot kunnen worden en de mate van impact van die bronnen op de omgeving zichtbaar wordt (zie mok-up figuur 2). Daarbinnen kan de ontwikkelde tool van groot belang zijn binnen de gebiedsgerichte doelstelingen als bijvoorbeeld de Regionale Energie Strategie (RES) of de nieuw te formuleren Energie Omgevingsplannen (EOP).

Om te kijken hoe dat kan is Dorpsbelang Buren samen met de gemeente Ameland, de Hanzehogeschool Groningen en GasTerra in 2019 het project Buren geeft Energie gestart. Het project heeft subsidie gekregen van het Iepen Mienskip Fûns van de provincie Fryslân en is daarnaast een casestudie in het ESTRAC-project.

n the work package described in this report, members are investigating whether a cooperative of farmers can become self-sufficient in energy and fertilization by using manure and organic waste flows in combination with anaerobic fermentation. The aim is to link the nutrient cycle (from manure to digestate to green fertilizer consisting of, for example, nitrate, phosphate, potassium, and trace elements) to a self-sufficient energy system, by the combined production of electricity, green gas, green fuels, and green fertilizers. Within this research such a system is called a circular multi commodity system (CMCS). In effect linking, the nutrient cycle with an energy production chain. In addition, other energy sources and sinks can also play a role in the system such as wind, solar PV and storage (e.g. batteries or hydrogen). For this symbiosis of production techniques to succeed in practice, intensive cooperation between arable farmers and dairy farmers is needed. Farmers supply part of the input from the biofermenter and receive green fertilizers at the end of the process, which are used as a substitute for fertilizer. The case is based on a cooperative of farmers with a minimal geographical spread and maximum diversity in type of business. In this way, the current waste and nutrient chain is being replaced by a more sustainable and closed cycle. This could provide significant environmental benefits: reduction of the environmental impact through the use of fertilizer, reduction of dependence on fossil raw materials, and reduction of CO2 emissions.

To avoid energy scarcity as well as climate change, a transition towards a sustainable society must be initiated. Within this context, governmental bodies and/or companies often note sustainability as an end goal, for instance as a green circular economy. However, if sustainability cannot be clearly defined as an end goal or measured uniformly and transparently, then the direction and progress towards this goal can only be roughly followed. A clear understanding of and a transparent, uniform measuring technique for sustainability are hence required for sustainable and circular (renewable) energy production pathways (REPPs), as society is asking for an integrated and understandable overview of the decision-making and planning process towards a future sustainable energy system. Therefore, within this dissertation, a new approach is proposed for measuring and optimizing the sustainability of REPPs; it is useful for the analysis, comparison, and optimization of REPP systems on all elements of sustainability. The new approach is applied and tested on a case based on farm-scale, anaerobic digestion (AD), biogas production pathways.

Visual Thinking (VT) is concerned with the use of visual resources (diagrams, simple drawings, short texts) to represent, organize or communicate ideas or contents. VT aims to favor the understanding of concepts to `translate' to a visual representation a content or process. Lower thinking skills to remember and understand concepts are necessary as much as higher order skills to filter, manage and spatially organize contents. VT offers us a slower, but more effective, way to learn and teachers are increasingly using VT for educational purposes in their lectures. Within the VT techniques, we have set ourselves in the so-called canvas as a template that allows to visually structuring the fundamental elements of an entity or process. As an example of use in the educational field, the PBL canvas proposed by conecta13, describes a Project Based Learning process in nine steps (key competences, learning standards, evaluation method, final product, tasks, resources, ICT tools, grouping and organization and dissemination). On the other hand, we find the need to encourage Science, Technonoloy, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) vocations, especially in women, given the decreasing interest in these areas (Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Mathematics) considered more arid and boring by students. This makes us to face a paradoxical crossroad, since much of the jobs of the future will be linked to these fields. It is therefore necessary to bring the methodology of scientific thinking closer to the students by presenting it in accessible ways. Here we propose a canvas that provides a visual structure to represent graphically the various steps of the scientific method. These steps include the systematic observation, formulation of hypothesis, design of the experiment to prove or discard them, to finally elaborate some conclusions leading to development of a theory. The canvas is used as a visual tool to support the design to summarize the results of the scientific experiment, to cover the different steps in a schematic way either with text or graphically. An empty template is provided as well as different examples of the canvas covered with experiments that can be carried out in different pre-university educational levels. In order to let this canvas become part of the public domain it is released under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike license, so that anyone can use it, copy or modify by free, with the only condition of attributing the corresponding authorship and keeping the license open.

23. Improving the sustainability of anaerobic digestion through the use of green hydrogen integration for increased green gas production through the use of a symbiotic approach

One potential renewable energy resource is green gas production through anaerobic digestion (AD). However, only part of the biogas produced (up to 50-60%) contains the combustible methane; the remainder are incombustible gasses with the biggest being carbon dioxide. These gasses are often not used and expelled in the atmosphere. Through the use of BIO-P2M where hydrogen is mixed with the remaining CO2 additional methane can be produced, increasing the yield and using the feedstocks more effectively. Within this research the environmental sustainability and effectiveness of BIO-P2M is evaluated using the MEFA and aLCA method, expressed in; net green gas production, efficiency in (P)EROI, emissions in GWP100, and environmental impact in Ecopoints. The functional unit is set as a normal cubic meter of Groningen quality natural gas. Results indicate a net improvement of all indicators when applying BIO-P2M in several configurations (in situ, ex situ). When allocating the production of renewable energy to the BIO-P2M system environmental impacts for wind the results are still positive; however, when using solar PV as an energy source the environmental impact in Ecopoints exceeds that of the reference case of Groningen natural gas. An additional option for improving the indicators is optimization of the process. When using BIO-P2M combined with heat and power unit for producing the internal electricity and heat demands all indicators are improved substantially. On a national scale when utilizing al available waste materials for the BIO-P2M system around 1217 MNm3/a of green gas can be produced, which is 3% of the total yearly consumption in the Netherlands and around 60% more than when using normal AD systems. Within the context BIO-P2M is an interesting option for increasing green gas output and improving the overall sustainability of the AD process. However, the source of green electricity needs to be taken into account and process optimization can ensure better environmental performance.

The 'AgroCycle' project investigates whether a cooperation of farms can become self-sufficient in energy and fertilization by using manure and organic waste streams for the production of energy, green fuel and green fertilizers by means of anaerobic digestion (AD). In the project, the project partners aim to link the nutrient cycle (from manure to digestate to green fertilizer) to a self-sufficient energy system (biomass to biogas to green fuel for processing the land) through the combined production of biogas and green fertilizers. The financial feasibility of a bio-digester is highly dependent on the use and economic value of the digestate. This combined approach increases both feasibility and sustainability (environmental impacts and CO2 emissions). To explore the feasibility of the aforementioned concept, use is made of the existing 'BioGas simulator' model developed by Hanze UAS to simulate the technical process of decentralized production of biogas and the economic cost.

Tijdens de Kick-off van Charrette Middag-Humsterland werden de eerste bouwstenen geplaatst voor een energieneutraal Middag-Humsterland. Hierbij werd de Charrette methode en doelstellingen doorgenomen en mensen aangemoedigd om mee te denken over de energietransitie en de totstandkoming hiervan. Gedurende de dag werkten bewoners en onderzoekers samen aan dit concept en gingen de discussie aan met elkaar.
