Abstract

Observations of distant supernovae indicate that the Universe is now in a phase of accelerated expansion the physical cause of which is a mystery. Formally, this requires the inclusion of a term acting as a negative pressure in the equations of cosmic expansion, accounting for about 75 per cent of the total energy density in the Universe. The simplest option for this "dark energy" corresponds to a cosmological constant, perhaps related to the quantum vacuum energy. Physically viable alternatives invoke either the presence of a scalar field with an evolving equation of state, or extensions of general relativity involving higher-order curvature terms or extra dimensions. Although they produce similar expansion rates, different models predict measurable differences in the growth rate of large-scale structure with cosmic time. A fingerprint of this growth is provided by coherent galaxy motions, which introduce a radial anisotropy in the clustering pattern reconstructed by galaxy redshift surveys. Here we report a measurement of this effect at a redshift of 0.8. Using a new survey of more than 10,000 faint galaxies, we measure the anisotropy parameter b = 0.70 +/- 0.26, which corresponds to a growth rate of structure at that time of f = 0.91 +/- 0.36. This is consistent with the standard cosmological-constant model with low matter density and flat geometry, although the error bars are still too large to distinguish among alternative origins for the accelerated expansion. 2. CRASH_alpha: coupling continuum and line radiative transfer

Abstract

In this paper we present CRASH_alpha, the first radiative transfer code for cosmological application that follows the parallel propagation of Ly_alpha and ionizing photons. CRASH_alpha is a version of the continuum radiative transfer code CRASH with a new algorithm to follow the propagation of Ly_alpha photons through a gas configuration whose ionization structure is evolving. The implementation introduces the time evolution for Ly_alpha photons (a feature commonly neglected in line radiative transfer codes) and, to reduce the computational time needed to follow each scattering, adopts a statistical approach to the Ly_alpha treatment by making extensive use of pre-compiled tables. With this statistical approach we experience a drastic increase of the computational speed and, at the same time, an excellent agreement with the full Ly_alpha radiative transfer computations of the code MCLy_alpha. We find that the emerging spectra keep memory of the ionization history which generates a given ionization configuration of the gas and, to properly account for this effect, a self-consistent joint evolution of line and ionizing continuum radiation as implemented in CRASH_alpha is necessary. A comparison between the results from our code and from Ly_alpha scattering alone on a fixed HI density field shows that the extent of the difference between the emerging spectra depends on the particular configuration considered, but it can be substantial and can thus affect the physical interpretation of the problem at hand. These differences should furthermore be taken into account when computing the impact of the Ly_alpha radiation on e.g. the observability of the 21 cm line from neutral hydrogen at epochs preceeding complete reionization., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures. Abstract

Measurements of the growth rate of structure f at different redshifts can discriminate the origin of cosmic acceleration. Coupled to estimates of the expansion rate H(z) as provided by Type-la supernovae or Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations, accurate measurements of f(z) are able to distinguish "dark energy" models from theories with modified gravity, as, e.g., braneworld models. These two classes are degenerate when considering the expansion history alone. We have recently shown (Nature, 451 (2008) 541) that redshift-space distortions in the clustering pattern of galaxies measured from large redshift surveys represent an extremely promising technique to trace f (z) back in time. We have measured the distortion parameter beta at z similar to 0.8 using the currently largest field of the VVDS-Wide survey, that includes more than 10000 galaxy redshifts to I(AB) = 22.5 over 4 deg(2). We obtain 0 - 0.70 +/- 0.26, corresponding to a growth rate f = 0.91 +/- 0.36, consistent with the simplest cosmological-constant scenario. Error bars are still large compared with the difference among models. However, next-generation deep surveys with N > 100000 redshifts over similar to 100deg(2) or larger, will be able to use this test as an accurate probe of the origin of cosmic acceleration.

Abstract

A case of a surgically confirmed cystic lymphangioma of the spleen is presented. Preoperative imaging consisted of US, contrast-enhanced CT and MRI, all showing a multiloculated lesion with small cystic cavities divided by thin septa, corresponding to dilated lymphatic spaces. Preoperative studies correlated well with the pathologic findings. Cystic lymphangioma of the spleen is a very rare condition and is usually solitary and asymptomatic. Large lymphangiomas may be an indication for splenectomy, since the risk of rupture is high even from minor abdominal trauma. Preoperative diagnosis may be achieved with correlated noninvasive imaging. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background Over the 1980s several education campaigns for prevention and early diagnosis of cutaneous melanoma have been reported from various parts of the world. Aim To improve incidence and prognosis of cutaneous melanoma in 1985 we started, in our area, an information and health education campaign aimed at identifying precursors of melanoma (congenital melanocytic nevi), suspicious lesions (changing moles) and subjects with increased risk of melanoma. Method Precursors and suspicious lesions were promptly removed, and high-risk persons entered the follow-up program. Result As a general effect of these activities the percentage of thin melanomas diagnosed in our division after 1985 increased from 25 to 37. Conclusion We believe that education campaigns and screening of a targeted population. particularly of subjects presenting increased risk of melanoma. may be helpful in the early diagnosis of melanoma. 16. Treatment of psoriasis vulgaris with topical calcipotriol: is the clinical improvement of lesional skin related to a down-regulation of some cell adhesion molecules?

Abstract

Calcipotriol is demonstrably efficacious for the treatment of psoriasis by virtue of its effects on the skin's immune system and on epidermal growth. We performed this study to emphasize the difference in the expression of certain cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) (ICAM-1, ELAM-1, LFA-1, VLA-3, VLA-6) in lesional and perilesional skin of 10 patients with psoriasis, before and after treatment with topical Calcipotriol. We took two biopsies of lesional and perilesional skin from each patient before and after treatment and then performed an immunohistochemical study to observe the expression of these CAMs, utilizing monoclonal antibodies against these adhesion molecules. We noticed reduced levels of infiltrating cells along with the expression of ICAM-1, LFA-1, ELAM-1 and of CAMs VLA-3, VLA-6 in basal and suprabasal keratinocytes. On the basis of these data we hypothesize that, besides epidermal keratinocytes, another target for Calcipotriol may be the skin's own immune system, suggesting that Calcipotriol can modify T lymphocyte activity (IL-1 dependent) through a down-regulation of CAMs.
