This document describes the dataset of depth (pressure)/temperature profiles collected by means of the AdriFOOS infrastructure in the period 2012–2020 and briefly illustrates the structure of this facility, the oceanographic dataset validation procedures, some of the results achieved, and also lists some possible operational applications. In fact, in the last decade, CNR IRBIM's AdriFOOS has collected an enormous amount of georeferenced oceanographic and catch data through the use of commercial fishing vessels operating in the Adriatic Sea. This information is of the utmost importance to provide data to feed oceanographic models and advance knowledge on climate change, as well as to improve the ecosystem approach to fisheries management.

More than 80% of wastewaters are discharged into rivers or seas, with a negative impact on water quality along the coast due to the presence of potential pathogens of faecal origin. Escherichia coli and enterococci are important indicators to assess, monitor, and predict microbial water quality in natural ecosystems. During rainfall events, the amount of wastewater delivered to rivers and coastal systems is increased dramatically. This study implements measures capable of monitoring the pathways of wastewater discharge to rivers and the transport of faecal bacteria to the coastal area during and following extreme rainfall events. Spatio-temporal variability of faecal microorganisms and their relationship with environmental variables and sewage outflow in an area located in the western Adriatic coast (Fano, Italy) was monitored. The daily monitoring during the rainy events was carried out for two summer seasons, for a total of five sampling periods. These results highlight that faecal microbial contaminations were related to rainy events with a high flow of wastewater, with recovery times for the microbiological indicators varying between 24 and 72 h and influenced by a dynamic dispersion. The positive correlation between ammonium and faecal bacteria at the Arzilla River and the consequences in seawater can provide a theoretical basis for controlling ammonium levels in rivers as a proxy to monitor the potential risk of bathing waters pathogen pollution.

In this paper, a high-frequency (HF) coastal radar network is described, which is established and maintained by the Institute of Marine Sciences (ISMAR) of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR) for the measurement of surface current velocities in the Gulf of Manfredonia, located in the semienclosed Adriatic Sea (Mediterranean Sea), during 2013–2015. The network consisted of four HF radars (HFRs) that provided hourly sea surface velocity data in real-time mode in a netCDF format compliant to the Climate and Forecast Metadata Conventions CF-1.6 and the INSPIRE directive. The hourly netCDF files are disseminated via a Thematic Real-time Environmental Distributed Data Services catalog supporting OGC compliant distributions and protocols for data visualization, metadata interrogation, and data download. HFR velocity data were compared with in situ velocity measurements by Global Positioning System tracked surface drifters deployed within the radar footprint. The results show a good agreement, with the root mean square (rms) of the difference between radial velocities from HFR and drifters ranging between $20\%$ and $50\%$ of the drifter velocity rms. The HFR data have also been compared with subsurface velocity profiles from an upward looking acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) during winter 2015, to gain information on the correlation between surface and water column velocities. This information is especially relevant for fishery and coastal management applications, where transport of larvae, sediments, and pollutants in the water column are considered. Results show that, at least in the considered period, the velocity in the water column is well correlated, and there is a good agreement between surface HFR and ADCP data (correlations between 0.95 and 0.75). The Gulf of Manfredonia network has been instrumental to the set up of a core of quality control practices and interoperable data and metadata formats that have been subsequently adopted within the Italian RITMARE network and that are presently discussed and refined at the European level through the projects Jerico-NEXT and INCREASE.

On the basis of observations and modelling of the plume generated by the Misa River (AN, Italy), we performed a comprehensive study, which integrated different sources of information (field data, numerical simulations, etc.), of the generation and transport mechanisms of river plumes flowing into microtidal environments. First, we analysed images simultaneously acquired by both two shore-based stations and satellite to determine plume fronts and extensions. Then, we correlated such information with the estuarine forcing to recognize the plume generation and transport mechanisms. Being real-life events influenced by a combination of factors, we run numerical simulations to separately study each force and its influence on the plume evolution. We also performed simulations of two real-life cases, to compare the modelled and observed results. We identified the river discharge and the wind as the main generation and transport mechanisms, respectively. Moreover, waves could stir, suspend, and drag plume sediments, even if results showed that a river discharge associated with a return period smaller than 1 year produced a plume denser than 5-year return period waves. The transport mechanisms were responsible for the alongshore extension of the plume. The tide, even if secondarily, affected the plume evolution, depending on its phase shift to the river discharge peak. Particle Tracking Velocimetry from videos acquired by a shore-based station provided the surface velocity field in the final river stretch. This and the contributions by wind and waves were correlated with the plume extension through a power law.

Background The striped venus clam Chamelea gallina is an economically important species in Adriatic Sea fisheries. The use of hydraulic dredging for its catch has a long history in Italy and its management faced several stages of development in the last 40 years. A great effort has been made in the past two decades to move from poorly or weakly managed fisheries to a well-structured co-management system to improve the sustainability of this fishery. However, a prerequisite for appropriate resource management is a sound knowledge of the biology and reproductive strategy of the species. Results We investigated three major biological features– the gametogenic cycle, size at sexual maturity and partial fecundity – by microscopic, histological and video analysis techniques. We demonstrated that its breeding season is driven by rises in seawater temperature and chlorophyll-a concentration and that its spawning period lasted from March to September. Size at sexual maturity was reached very early in the life cycle. As regards partial fecundity – the number of mature oocytes potentially released by females with ripe gonads in a single release event – varied in relation to size. Nevertheless, the reduction on the Minimum Conservation Reference Size (MCRS) from 25 to 22 mm (Delegated Regulation (EU) 2020/2237) lead to a 40% reduction in the number of emitted eggs. Conclusions We suggest that the ability of Adriatic clam stocks to withstand the strong fishing pressure of the past 40 years and the present one is due to their high reproductive potential and multiple spawning events combined with the effect of management measures (closed areas/seasons, quota, MCRS) and technical constraints on the gear and the sieve on board. Moreover, since the reduced MCRS for Venus shells is still larger than the size at maturity, it will probably not be detrimental to the reproductive capacity of the stock.

We illustrate recent findings on the upriver propagation of long waves entering the mouth of the Misa River (Senigallia, Italy). Such a microtidal environment has been recently studied to understand river–sea interactions: it has been found that the river forcing dominates over the marine actions in winter, especially during storms. However, upriver wave propagation is not negligible with low-frequency waves propagating upriver for distances of the order of kilometers. With the aim to better understand the behavior of low-frequency waves propagating upriver, the analysis of the present work builds on field data collected by instruments installed close to the mouth and along the final reach of the Misa River: a tide gauge, two hydrometers and an acoustic Doppler sensor. It has been here observed that the tidal forcing (periods of the order of hours/days) is significantly strong at a distance of more than one kilometer from the river mouth, while shorter waves, like seiches (periods of some hours), are less important and are supposed to largely dissipate at the estuary, although their role could be of importance during relatively short events (e.g., floods).

In the Adriatic Sea, massive rainfall events are causing flooding of rivers and streams, with severe consequences on the environment. The consequent bacterial contamination of bathing water poses public health risks besides damaging tourism and the economy. This study was conducted in the framework of WATERCARE, an EU Interreg Italy-Croatia Project, which aims at reducing the impact of microbial contamination on Adriatic bathing water due to heavy rainfall events drained in the local sewage network and; enhancing the quality of local waters; and providing support for the decision-making processes regarding the management of bathing water in line with EU regulations. The study involved the development of an innovative water quality integrated system that helps meet these objectives. It consists of four components: a real time hydro-meteorological monitoring system; an autosampler to collect freshwater samples during and after significant rainfall events; a forecast system to simulate the dispersion of pollutants in seawater; and a real-time alert system that can predict the potential ecological risk from the microbial contamination of seawater. The system was developed and tested at a pilot site (Fano, Italy). These preliminary results will be used to develop guidelines for urban wastewater and coastal system quality assessments to contribute to develop policy actions and final governance decisions.

The evolution of different wave components as they propagate within a microtidal inlet during a storm occurring from 24–26 January 2014 is analysed, in order to improve knowledge on how microtidal river mouths typical of the Adriatic Sea behave. For the first time, the “low-pass filter” mechanism previously ascertained at several macrotidal oceanic inlets around the world has been observed in the field with remarkably specific hydrodynamic conditions, i.e. low tide excursion, permanent connection with the sea and generally milder wave climate than in the ocean. Sea/swell (SS) waves were strongly dissipated before entering the river mouth, through the combined action of wave breaking due to reducing depths and opposing river currents enhanced by rainfall. Infragravity (IG) waves propagated upstream and significant IG wave heights of up to 0.4 m, about 13% of the local water depth, have been observed 400 m upriver (about 10 times the local SS peak wavelength) during storm climax. The IG wave energy here represented over 4% of the maximum offshore storm energy. IG wave components travelled upriver at estimated velocities between 3.6 m/s and 5.5 m/s (comparable with speeds of nonlinear long waves) during intense storm stages up to 600 m into the river channel (about 15 times the local SS peak wavelength), and are enhanced by tide-induced increase in water depths. It is estimated that tide-induced excursion accounted for about 80% of the total mean water elevation at storm peak at about 400 m into the river. Finally, tidal oscillations are detected up to 1.5 km upstream (about 40 times the local SS peak wavelength). This study highlights the dominance of astronomical tide over both wave setup and storm surge in controlling the upriver propagation of IG waves, even in a microtidal environment.

Long-term data series (1971&ndash, 2015) of physical and biogeochemical parameters were analyzed in order to assess trends and variability of oceanographic conditions in the northern Adriatic Sea (NAS), a mid-latitude shallow continental shelf strongly impacted by river discharges, human activities and climate changes. Interpolation maps and statistical models were applied to investigate seasonal and spatial variability, as well as decadal trends of temperature, salinity, chlorophyll-a and nutrients. This analysis shows that sea surface temperature increased by +0.36% year&minus, 1 over four decades. Annual mean flow of the Po River markedly changed due to the occurrence of periods of persistent drought, whereas the frequency of flow rates higher than 3000 m3 s&minus, 1 decreased between 2006 and 2015. Moreover, we observed a long-term decrease in surface phosphate concentrations in Po River water (&minus, 1.34% year&minus, 1) and in seawater (in summer &minus, 2.56% year&minus, 1) coupled, however, to a significant increase in nitrate concentration in seawater (+3.80% year&minus, 1) in almost all seasons. These changes indicate that the nutrient concentrations in the NAS have been largely modulated, in the last forty years, by the evolution of environmental management practices and of the runoff. This implies that further alteration of the marine environment must be expected as a consequence of the climate changes.

To evaluate the anthropogenic impact in surface sediments of the Northern and Central Adriatic Sea, dissolved fluxes at the sediment water interface of heavy metals and nutrients on the sea bottom in front of the Po River mouths and along the western side of the Northern and Central Adriatic Sea have been determined. The fluxes have been measured by benthic chamber deployments and calculated by pore water modelling. Pore waters composition have been used also to understand the early diagenesis processes generating the benthic fluxes.Benthic chamber deployments and sediment core collection for pore water extraction have been carried out in three cruises in spring and autumn 2013 and autumn 2014.The study stations have been chosen on the base of previous research results indicating a decreasing heavy metal and organic matter surface content leaving from the Po River mouths (Pérez-Albaladejo et al., 2016). The data obtained have been compared with previous studies carried in the Adriatic Sea (Spagnoli et al. 2010).Results of the 2013 and 2014 cruises and of previous investigations indicate a consistent and rapid dissolved benthic flux decreasing going away from the Po River mouths both southward, eastward and northward.The decreasing regards the final electron acceptors and the organic matter degradation products and some heavy metals.On the whole, different early diagenesis environments have been recognized in the Northern and Central Adriatic Sea: they embrace two end members: from the Po River Prodelta to the Mid Adriatic Depression (MAD) (Spagnoli et al., 2014). In front of the Po River sediments are characterized by high sedimentation rate and by high inputs of fresh marine organic matter, continental organic matter and Fe-oxyhydroxides. These inputs produce high concentrations of organic matter degradation products, strong anoxic environment in the pore waters and high dissolved benthic fluxes. In the MAD the diagenetic environments are characterized by low sedimentation rate and low inputs of reactive organic matter that produce low concentrations of pore-water organic matter degradation products with oxic conditions near the surface and weak benthic fluxes.As regard the two major metals involved in the early diagenesis processes (Fe and Mn), they too show dissolved benthic fluxes decreases from the Po River mouths. Also in this case, this trend is attributed to the high Po River dissolved and particulate, anthropogenic and natural, metal inputs that deposit in the surface sediments of the Po Prodelta (Spagnoli and Bergamini, 1997).The dissolved benthic fluxes of trace heavy metals (Co, Ni, Zn, Cu, Cd, Pb) indicate that some elements, such as Co and Pb, are clearly adsorbed by the sediment that act, for these two elements as sink. Other elements, such as Cu, don’t show a clear north–south trend s, while other elements, such as Cd, indicate a southward decreasing trend suggesting a behavior affected by the Po River inputs and Fe-Mn-oxyhydroxide cycle.

This study investigates how multiple forcing factors such as rivers, surface marine circulation and winds affect hydrology and biogeochemical processes in the Gulf of Manfredonia and the seas around the Gargano peninsula, in the south-western Adriatic Sea. The study adopted an integrated approach, using in situ and remote sensing data, as well as the output of current models. The data reveal variability in the area's hydrography induced by local freshwater sources, the Western Adriatic Current (WAC) flowing from the north along the Italian coast, and the current patterns under different wind regimes. Specifically, exchange with offshore waters in the gulf induces variability in salinity and biogeochemical content, even within the same season, i.e. winter, in our case. This strong dependence on physical and biogeochemical factors makes the Manfredonia-Gargano ecosystem vulnerable to climate change, which could compromise its important role as a nursery area for the Adriatic Sea.

The aim of the paper is to assess the accuracy for physical oceanography purposes of some commercial sensors (Star-Oddi and NKE) installed on fishing boats in the Adriatic Sea. When mounted on fishing gears, they can retrieve huge amounts of daily datasets (temperature, depth and salinity), spanning a very large spatial region. The possibility to establish their accuracy would be of extreme importance for physical oceanography studies since it would be almost impossible to obtain the same amount of data by means of cruises onboard Research Vessels. Comparison tests against a calibrated {CTD} were performed during several surveys. Summarizing, the data collected by Star-Oddi sensors are useful only considering the data portion where a dwell time at a fixed depth permanence is longer than 50 s, while those collected by {NKE} sensors are much more accurate for both depth and temperature and could be usefully considered for broader oceanographic purposes. The weak point of the {NKE} sensors is the salinity measurement. The evaluation carried out in the present study underlined the optimal conditions for the usage of the considered sensors and produced a series of offsets that might be used to enhance the accuracy of the recorded datasets.

Shallow and deep marine environments are presently subject to strong ecological alterations due to anthropic activities, inputs of chemical pollutants and solid dumps on the sea bottom, or to global processes such as ocean acidification and global climate changes. These alterations can result in variations of the chemistry and of the trophic status of the sea water column, changes in the biogeochemical cycle of chemical elements as well as pollution phenomena, both in the sea bottom sediment and sea water column. To study the biogeochemical cycles of substances affected by the anthropic alteration in shallow and deep marine environments we realized two devices for measuring the fluxes of dissolved chemicals between the sediment and the water column: the Lander Amerigo and the Automatic Benthic Chamber (CBA). Amerigo is a lander able to operate both in shallow and deep marine environments (up to 6000 m depth) while the CBA can be employed on the continental shelf (up to 200 m depth). Moreover, the Lander Amerigo can be used also to deploy on the seafloor different types of instruments for the study of the benthic ecosystems. At present the CBA has been successfully employed in various research projects in shallow environments and environmental anthropic activity evaluations while Amerigo has been successfully deployed and tested in medium and deep marine environments. First datum fluxes, measured both by Amerigo and CBA, show good results, these are consistent with each other and with previous data.

A multidisciplinary approach that combines field measurements, artificial neural networks, water balance analyses and hydrodynamic modelling was developed to investigate the water budget and renewal capacity of semi-closed coastal systems. The method was applied to the Lesina Lagoon, a micro-tidal lagoon in the southern Adriatic Sea (Italy). Surface water flux between the lagoon and the sea was determined by neural network prediction and used as input in the analysis. Strong seasonal variations in the water budget equation were predicted. Fresh water inputs estimated by the water balance analysis were used as forcing by a calibrated finite element model to describe the water circulation and transport time scale of the lagoon's surface waters. The model highlighted the spatial heterogeneity of the renewal behaviour of the system, with a strong east-west water renewal time gradient. Knowledge of spatial distribution of water renewal times is crucial for understanding the lagoon's renewal capacity and explaining the high spatial variability of the biogeochemistry of the Lesina Lagoon.

Boka Kotorska Bay, located in the southeastern Adriatic Sea along the Montenegro coastline, is a complex morphological structure, consisting of three embayments. They are connected and interact with the sea through narrow straits and the bay can be considered one of the main freshwater inputs into the southern Adriatic Sea. In the framework of the ADRICOSM-STAR project, a hydrodynamical model of this region provided results that are compared with CTD data and hydrodynamic scenarios are discussed for the bay. A finite element coastal model nested in a finite difference model that runs on the Adriatic Sea has been used to reproduce the complex morphology of the bay. Hydrodynamic modeling allows studying the main characteristics of this bay, identifying it as a Region of Freshwater Influence (ROFI). The freshwater input coming from the numerous sources present in the bays can strongly modify temperature, salinity and current patterns. The computation of the buoyancy ratio of the thermal and haline buoyancy flux showed that the Kotor and Morinj Bays experience a major effect of surface heating in summer, while the rest of the bay seems to be mostly affected by freshwater influence from precipitation and river discharge. An average estuarine situation is seen, presenting a surface outflow and a bottom inflow of water. Specific hydrodynamic processes can be detected in the channels that connect the different sub-basins of the Boka Kotorska Bay. Moreover, the computation of the Kelvin number in correspondence of the internal straits suggests classifying the Kotor and Morinj Bays differently from the outermost areas. The innermost Kotor and Morinj Bays, generally exchange little water with the sea and they have high values of residence times. However, their fresh water springs and rivers have the highest discharges that can change abruptly the picture with increase of the total water exchange between the bay and the sea.

We define an individual-based probabilistic model of a sole (Solea solea) behaviour. The individual model is given in terms of an Extended Probabilistic Discrete Timed Automaton (EPDTA), a new formalism that is introduced in the paper and that is shown to be interpretable as a Markov decision process. A given EPDTA model can be probabilistically model-checked by giving a suitable translation into syntax accepted by existing model-checkers. In order to simulate the dynamics of a given population of soles in different environmental scenarios, an agent-based simulation environment is defined in which each agent implements the behaviour of the given EPDTA model. By varying the probabilities and the characteristic functions embedded in the EPDTA model it is possible to represent different scenarios and to tune the model itself by comparing the results of the simulations with real data about the sole stock in the North Adriatic sea, available from the recent project SoleMon. The National Research Council of Italy (CNR) has been undertaking scientific and technological activities aimed at implementing intelligent and automated systems for the collection of data in support of oceanography and fisheries science, as well as providing services for fishing operators. Two independent operational units autonomously developed two original devices, the Fishery Observing System (FOS) and the Information and Communications Technology kit (ICT-kit), recently converging towards a new modular system named the Fishery and Oceanography Observing System (FOOS) that can be adapted to fit the specific research needs of the areas in which it is used. This paper reports the development process and describes the two applications in use in Italy.

Currently, several operational marine centres issue routine seasonal forecasts produced with coupled oceanatmosphere models. For good result they require also real-time knowledge of the state of marine area as regard as oceanographic and atmospheric parameters. Effectiveness of marine climate knowledge and predictability resides in fast, reliable, scattered and numerous information on the initial marine and atmospheric conditions. The aim of this work is to present a review of the existing real time stations in the Adriatic sea and a critic state of the arte with the aim to propose a new single and standardized coastal oceanographic observatory network based on previous existing oceanographic buoys set up by different projects and institutions and with various features. The network ISMAR could be based on various oceanographic buoys located along the Adriatic Sea coastal waters transmitting real time data, accessible, after a data quality control and sensor/instrument field calibration validation, on internet by a web site. In this way it will possible to have a single system of real time oceanographic and meteorological standardized data available for regional stakeholders, policy makers, economic operators, environmental safety and tourists. Data will also useful to improve forecast systems active for the Adriatic Sea; finally it will greatly improve the knowledge of the main hydrological and meteorological forcing factors in a Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) study area where decadal time series on ecological studies are collected in a collaborative joint effort to depict trends in the trophic status and biogeochemical proprieties of the basin. 1. INTRODUCTION

The temporal variations of temperature, salinity, fluorescence, dissolved oxygen concentration, Coloured Dissolved Organic Matter (CDOM) and of chemical (nutrients, chlorophyll a) and biological (phytoplankton composition) parameters in the Boka Kotorska Bay were observed during two periods. CDOM regulates the penetration of UV light into the sea and therefore plays an important role in many hydrological and biogeochemical processes in the sea surface layer including primary productivity. In the framework ADRICOSM-STAR it was possible to investigate the Boka Kotorska Bay during May and June 2008 in order to increase an understanding of optical and chemical characteristics and their evolution during these periods. In both periods station KO (located furthest from the open sea) presented different physical, chemical and biological characteristics with respect to the other stations inside the Boka Kotorska Bay. A positive correlation was found between CDOM and chlorophyll a (R = 0.7, P < 0.001, n = 15) and this implies that in this area, similarly to the open sea, the primary source of CDOM should be the biological production from phytoplankton. This is probably due to the fact that the rivers entering the Boka Kotorska Bay are not severely impacted by man., U Bokokotorskom zaljevu su mjerene vremenske promjene temperature, saliniteta, fluorescencije, koncentracije otopljenog kisika, obojene otopljene organske materije (CDOM) i kemijskih (hranjive soli, klorofila) i bioloških (sastav fitoplanktona) parametara tijekom dva razdoblja (svibanj i lipanj 2008. godine). CDOM određuje prodiranje UV svjetlosnih zraka u more i stoga igra vrlo važnu ulogu u mnogim hidrološkim i biogeokemijskim procesima u površinskom sloju mora koji uključuje primarnu produkciju. Unutar ADRICOSM-STAR projekta, bilo je moguće istražiti Bokokotorski zaljev tijekom svibnja i lipnja 2008. godine radi povećanja razumijevanja optičkih i kemijskih karakteristika i njihovog razvoja kroz ova razdoblja. Zbog dotoka krških rijeka i smanjenja razmjene s otvorenim morem, u oba razdoblja postaja KO (smještena najdalje od otvorenog mora) je pokazala različite fizikalne, kemijske i biolo{ke karakteristike u odnosu na postaje unutar Bokokotorskog zaljeva. Pronađena je pozitivna korelacija izme|u CDOM i klorofila a (R = 0.7, P < 0.001, n = 15) {to upućuje na to da bi u ovom području, slično otvorenom moru, primarni izvor CDOM trebao biti biološka produkcija od fitoplanktona. To je vjerojatno zbog toga što dotoci rijeka u Bokokotorskom zaljevu nisu ozbiljnije ugroženi ljudskim djelovanjem.

The Drini and ManfredoniaGulfswere investigated in May 2008 and April 2009, respectively. The gulfs are located in the South Eastern (GulfofDrini) and South Western (GulfofManfredonia)Adriatic Sea. The areas are partially influenced by two main Adriatic surface currents: the Eastern Adriatic Current-EAC that flows north-westward along the eastern side, and the Western Adriatic Current—WAC that flows south-eastward along the western side of the basin. The spatial variations of temperature, salinity, fluorescence, dissolved oxygen concentration, Coloured Dissolved Organic Matter—CDOM, nutrients, chlorophyll a and phytoplankton composition parameters in the two areas were observed and compared. CDOM regulates the penetration of UV light into the sea and plays an important role in many hydrological and biogeochemical processes on the sea surface layer including primary productivity. The phytoplankton specific diversity of the Gulf of Manfredonia showed a spring community with dinoflagellates (21 taxa) as the main important fraction, coccolithophorales (6 taxa) and diatoms with 10 identified taxa. The phytoplankton distribution along the eastern coast showed a different biodiversity: a prevalence of dinoflagellates (58 taxa) included harmful microalgae such as Alexandrium, Dinophysis and Lingulodinium genus. Diatoms were less abundant, among them Pseudo-nitzschia was also reported which could include some potentially toxic species. Nanoplankton are ever abundant in offshore waters and an exceptional bloom of cyanobacteria was registered in Buna-Boyana estuary due to strong industrial impact. The gulfs showed similar physical and biochemical characteristics despite the WAC carried out along the westernAdriatic Seathe water rich in nutrients from the major northern Italian rivers. No correlations were found between CDOM and chlorophyll a in the two areas and this implied that, probably, the primary source of CDOM might come from terrestrial input rather than the biological production from phytoplankton. The Gulf of Drini is impacted by the runoff of the Buna-Bojana River that makes this gulf an eutrophic area despite the mostly eastern side of the Adriatic being an oligotrophic basin.

The Italian Fixed-Point Observatory Network (IFON) integrates well-established coastal and ocean infrastructures (buoys, platforms, moorings, mast platforms, etc.), most of them providing realtime multidisciplinary monitoring for a number of marine and atmospheric variables. Here, we describe the network characteristics and then discuss an example of its operation during the cold spell of winter 2012. One of the goals of the Italian Flagship Project Ricerca Italiana per il mare (RITMARE) is to create a common, validated IFON database able to fulfil both public and private demands, including validation of remotely sensed data and numerical models, environmental planning and management, and time-series analysis of climate and oceanographic data.
