1. The NF-κB RelA transcription factor is not required for CD8+ T-cell function in acute viral infection and cancer

Abstract: CD8+ T cells are critical mediators of pathogen clearance and anti-tumor immunity. Although signaling pathways leading to the activation of NF-κB transcription factors have crucial functions in the regulation of immune responses, the CD8+ T cell-autonomous roles of the different NF-κB subunits, are still unresolved. Here, we investigated the function of the ubiquitously expressed transcription factor RelA in CD8+ T-cell biology using a novel mouse model and gene-edited human cells. We found that CD8+ T cell-specific ablation of RelA markedly altered the transcriptome of ex vivo stimulated cells, but maintained the proliferative capacity of both mouse and human cells. In contrast, in vivo experiments showed that RelA deficiency did not affect the CD8+ T-cell response to acute viral infection or transplanted tumors. Our data suggest that in CD8+ T cells, RelA is dispensable for their protective activity in pathological contexts.

2. Immunophenotyping of Peripheral Blood Cells in Patients with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Treated with Ibrutinib

Abstract: Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a B-cell-derived hematologic malignancy whose progression depends on active B-cell receptor (BCR) signaling. Despite the spectacular efficacy of Ibrutinib, an irreversible inhibitor of Bruton tyrosine kinase (BTK), resistance can develop in CLL patients, and alternative therapeutic strategies are therefore required. Cancer immunotherapy has revolutionized cancer care and may be an attractive approach in this context. We speculated that characterizing the immune responses of CLL patients may highlight putative immunotherapeutic targets. Here, we used high-dimensional spectral flow cytometry to compare the distribution and phenotype of non-B-cell immune populations in the circulating blood of CLL patients treated with Ibrutinib displaying a complete response or secondary progression. Although no drastic changes were observed in the composition of their immune subsets, the Ibrutinib-resistant group showed increased cycling of CD8+ T cells, leading to their overabundance at the expense of dendritic cells. In addition, the expression of 11 different surface checkpoints was similar regardless of response status. Together, this suggests that CLL relapse upon Ibrutinib treatment may not lead to major alterations in the peripheral immune response.

Abstract: Abstract NF-kappaB (NF-κB) is a family of transcription factors with pleiotropic functions in immune responses. The alternative NF-κB pathway that leads to the activation of RelB and NF-κB2, was previously associated with the activation and function of T cells, though the exact contribution of these NF-κB subunits remains unclear. Here, using mice carrying conditional ablation of RelB in T cells, we evaluated its role in the development of conventional CD4+ T (Tconv) cells and their function in autoimmune diseases. RelB was largely dispensable for Tconv cell homeostasis, activation and proliferation, and for their polarization toward different flavors of Thelper cells in vitro. Moreover, ablation of RelB had no impact on the capacity of Tconv cells to induce autoimmune colitis. Conversely, clinical severity of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), a mouse model of multiple sclerosis (MS) was significantly reduced in mice with RelB-deficient T cells. This was associated with impaired expression of granulocyte–macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) specifically in the central nervous system. Our data reveal a discrete role for RelB in the pathogenic function of Tconv cells during EAE, and highlight this transcription factor as a putative therapeutic target in MS.

Abstract: On the seashore, archaeologi’cal remains appear well preserved and sometimes immediatly visible during erosion periods. But the constraints are accumulating at all levels : limited intervention time, water, movement of tides, rapid change due to erosion, access conditions to excavations, difficulty encountered in implementation of heavy infrastructures. For these reasons, the interventions on this area have been limited for a long time to simple observations acompanied by samples. The rise of seashore issues and the increasing coastal erosion lead to real survey or excavation projects. Carried out nor in terrestrial conditions, nor in underwater conditions, these operations required an original methodology, new tools or sampling methods.Some examples choosen in various contexts illustrate the reactivity and the adaptations needed in the study of sites generally well preserved, supplying frequently organic remains, even fish or crustacean remains.

6. Assessment of RTK Quadcopter and Structure-from-Motion Photogrammetry for Fine-Scale Monitoring of Coastal Topographic Complexity

Abstract: Advances in image-based remote sensing using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and structure-from-motion (SfM) photogrammetry continue to improve our ability to monitor complex landforms over representative spatial and temporal scales. As with other water-worked environments, coastal sediments respond to shaping processes through the formation of multi-scale topographic roughness. Although this topographic complexity can be an important marker of hydrodynamic forces and sediment transport, it is seldom characterized in typical beach surveys due to environmental and technical constraints. In this study, we explore the feasibility of using SfM photogrammetry augmented with an RTK quadcopter for monitoring the coastal topographic complexity at the beach-scale in a macrotidal environment. The method had to respond to resolution and time constraints for a realistic representation of the topo-morphological features from submeter dimensions and survey completion in two hours around low tide to fully cover the intertidal zone. Different tests were performed at two coastal field sites with varied dimensions and morphologies to assess the photogrammetric performance and eventual means for optimization. Our results show that, with precise image positioning, the addition of a single ground control point (GCP) enabled a global precision (RMSE) equivalent to that of traditional GCP-based photogrammetry using numerous and well-distributed GCPs. The optimal model quality that minimized vertical bias and random errors was achieved from 5 GCPs, with a two-fold reduction in RMSE. The image resolution for tie point detection was found to be an important control on the measurement quality, with the best results obtained using images at their original scale. Using these findings enabled designing an efficient and effective workflow for monitoring coastal topographic complexity at a large scale.

Abstract: Understanding the threats to global biodiversity and ecosystem services posed by human impacts on coastal and marine environments requires the establishment and maintenance of ecological observatories that integrate the biological, physical, geological, and biogeochemical aspects of ecosystems. This is crucial to provide scientists and stakeholders with the support and knowledge necessary to quantify environmental change and its impact on the sustainable use of the seas and coasts. In this paper, we explore the potential for the coastal and marine components of the International Long-Term Ecological Research Network (ILTER) to fill this need for integrated global observation, and highlight how ecological observations are necessary to address the challenges posed by climate change and evolving human needs and stressors within the coastal zone. The ILTER is a global network encompassing 44 countries and 700 research sites in a variety of ecosystems across the planet, more than 100 of which are located in coastal and marine environments (ILTER-CMS). While most of the ILTER-CMS were established after the year 2000, in some cases they date back to the early 1900s. At ILTER sites, a broad variety of abiotic and biotic variables are measured, which may feed into other global initiatives. The ILTER community has produced tools to harmonize and compare measurements and methods, allowing for data integration workflows and analyses between and within individual ILTER sites. After a brief historical overview of ILTER, with emphasis on the marine component, we analyze the potential contribution of the ILTER-CMS to global coastal and ocean observation, adopting the “Strength, Weakness, Opportunity and Threats (SWOT)” approach. We also identify ways in which the in situ parameters collected at ILTER sites currently fit within the Essential Ocean Variables framework (as proposed by the Framework for Ocean Observation recommendations) and provide insights on the use of new technology in long-term studies. Final recommendations point at the need to further develop observational activities at LTER sites and improve coordination among them and with external related initiatives in order to maximize their exploitation and address present and future challenges in ocean observations.

Abstract: International audience; While early maps are known from all over the world, the key questions always involve: what exactly do they show? And what spatial extent do they cover? In this context, we recently used 3D-modelling to re-examine a carved stone slab datable to the Early Bronze Age (c.2150–1600 BC) that was found at Saint-Bélec in Brittany. We show that the surface of the slab had been shaped in three dimensions to represent the relief of the surrounding landscape in which it was found, while several engraved motifs on it evoke contemporary structures known archaeologically. We argue that the Saint-Bélec slab represents an area of c.545 km2 corresponding to the extent of a prehistoric political entity. The carving and subsequent burying of the slab can be linked to the postulated rise and fall of hierarchical societies and raises many wider questions about socio-economic structures in temperate Europe at that time.

Abstract: The long-term evolution of coastal sand-dune systems is is known to be controlled by variations in sediment supply, relative sea level (RSL), wind energy, vegetation cover and anthropogenic forcing. The link between episodic sand invasion and changes in climate conditions (enhanced storminess) has been previously evidenced along the Atlantic coasts of Europe from stratigraphical, geomorphological and chronological investigations of recent aeolian sand-dune deposits. While well-constrained timing templates of dune accretion during Holocene were reconstructed in Portugal, Spain and Ireland, available data about the French Atlantic coast are limited to the Aquitaine dune complex (SW France). This lack of data is mainly due to the absence of well-developed palaeosoils interbedded within the aeolian sand deposits, especially in Brittany where only thin humic layers are preserved within the coastal dune sediment sequences. An alternative approach is here applied to the coastal dunes of Brittany by also integrating available and partly revised archaeological dataset, excavated from the end of the 19th century, and used as chrono-stratigraphical markers to reconstruct at a regional scale the periods of coastal dunes mobility during the last ca. 6,000 years. This analysis was further completed with historical data about the last few centuries. 214 sites distributed along the western coasts of France have been selected to provide accurate information in terms of dune stratigraphy and chronology. A conceptual tool routinely used in archaeology, the Harris matrix, was employed to synthesise these chrono-stratigraphic data about 78 coastal sand-dune systems. Four main episodes of aeolian activity identified during the mid- to late-Holocene period are dated at 4,250-4,100 cal BP (phase 1), 3,250-2,400 cal BP (phase 2), 1,050-700 cal BP (phase 3), and 350-110 cal BP (phase 4). Despite some methodological limitations, archaeological remains appear to be relevant chronological indicators and may be used to reconstruct ancient periods of coastal dune mobility. Finally, an evolutionary model is established about the sand-dune morphological changes that occurred during the mid-to late-Holocene period along the Western France coasts, whereas the nature of the driving mechanisms of sand movement initiation is also discussed.

15. Overwashing and rapid retreat of the gravel spit barrier assessment based on the Orford and Carter (1982) storm impact scale model

Abstract: The gravel barrier spit of the Sillon de Talbert (North Brittany, France) is a single-ridge swash-aligned barrier stretching over 3.5 km long and it is composed of a volume of sandy-gravel sediments of 1.23 106 m3. Based on annual topomorphological surveys, the morphosedimentary evolution of the Sillon de Talbert was analyzed over the period 2002-2019. The results shown that the barrier spit is driven by both longshore and cross-shore dynamics. However, since cross-shore sediment transfers are dominant comparing to longshore sediment, respectively 430,000 m3vs 52,000 m3. For the last 80 years (1930-2010), the median section of this barrier spit has displayed an average landward migration rate up to –1.2 m.yr-1. However, this barrier retreat rate has increased for the last fifteen years (2002-2017), reaching –2 m.yr-1. This evolution of the Sillon de Talbert for the last decades led us to conduct a higher frequency (weekly to bi-weekly) morphological survey based on beach profile measurements along two radials. It was also based on tide and offshore and shallow wave records using modeling (WW3) and OSSI pressure sensor. By increasing the frequency of measurements, the objective was to record the impact of each storm on the morphological evolution of the barrier. It was also a question of better understanding the hydrodynamic functioning modalities involved in the measured morphological changes. Finally, the storm impact scale model of Orford and Carter (1982) was tested using these field measurements. The results show a barrier retreat of –23 to –30 m (i.e., –3.3 to –4.3 m.y-1) over the 7-year survey (Sep 2012-Dec 2019). This retreat is related to microscale (100 yr) morphogenic events combining storm wave and high spring tide. Over 87% to 90% of the barrier retreat is due to three significant events (February 1-2, 2014, February 9, 2016, and January 3, 2018). The storm impact scale model of Orford and Carter (1982) is tested using the flow depth (Od,q) overtopping the crest of the barrier (Bh). Flow depth is thresholded by taking into account the morphological response of the barrier in order to define regimes corresponding to overtopping, discrete overwash, and sluicing overwash. While the Orford and Carter model is generally successful in reproducing the morphodynamic evolution of the Sillon de Talbert, this study shows that the wave energy flux (F) must be considered as an additional parameter in order to improve the fit of the model, so far as it contributes in some cases to change the morphodynamic regime. Thus, the wave energy flux constitutes a key component in the quantification of the water flow across the barrier (Od,q) corresponding to the hydrodynamic forcing of the model, which becomes (Od,F).

Abstract: New results acquired in the south-Brittany shelf (core MD08-3204 CQ: Bay of Quiberon and core VK03-58bis: south-Glénan) allow depicting Holocene paleoenvironmental changes from 8.5 ka BP to present through a multi-proxy dataset including sedimentological and palynological data.First, grain-size analyses and AMS-14C dates depict a common sedimentary history for both study cores. After the post-glacial sea-level (RSL) rise and related high sedimentation rates, the parallel slowdown of the RSL rise and the drop of sedimentation rates occurred between 8.3 and 5.7 ka BP. This interval leads to the establishment of a shell-condensed level, identified in the VK03-58bis core by the “Turritella layer” and interpreted as a marker for the establishment of the maximum flooding surface. Palynological data (pollen grains and dinocyst assemblages) acquired in the core MD08-3204 CQ argue for an amplification of the fluvial influence since 5.9 ka BP; the establishment of the highstand system tract (i.e. estuarine-type sedimentation on the platform) then accompanying the slowdown of the RSL rise. On the shelf, the Anthropogenic Pollen Indicators (API) amplification, is detected since 4.2 ka BP, due to the fluvial influence becoming predominant in the context of the Late Holocene.In addition, the comparison of fluvial palynological tracers, including API, over the last 7 kyrs, with coastal-marines sites subjected to northern vs. southern Loire catchment areas, allowed to discuss a major hydro-climatic effect on the reconstructed palynological signals. Strengthened subpolar gyre dynamics (SPG), combined with recurrent positive North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) configurations, are well-known to favour increased winter precipitation and fluvial discharge in northern Europe, such as Brittany, and conversely during weakened SPG the winter fluvial discharge is intensified over southern Europe. Interestingly, we record, at an infra-orbital timescale, major peaks of API during periods of strengthened (/weakened) SPG dynamics in sites whose catchment areas are located north (/south) of the Loire.

The estimation of the wave runup for the calculation of extreme water levels (i.e., peak overflow elevation (Oe) component), is based on the calibration of an equation performed from in situ measurements of the swash elevation. The flow depth (Od,q) overtopping the crest of the barrier (Bh) is thresholded by taking into account the morphological response of the barrier in order to define regimes corresponding to overtopping, discrete overwash, and sluicing overwash. Abstract: National audience; Monde marin d’une grande diversité, la « Réserve de biosphère des îles et de la mer d’Iroise » se caractérise par la densité de ses habitats naturels et la productivité exceptionnelle de ses eaux. Balayée par la houle et les courants, elle constitue une zone refuge pour les espèces animales et végétales, dont les plus rares ou menacées sont désormais protégées. Tirant profit de ces richesses environnementales, l’Homme a marqué de son empreinte les paysages de l’Iroise. Tandis que de profondes mutations affectent aujourd’hui les populations insulaires, les pressions qui pèsent sur la biodiversité imposent d’adopter un nouveau rapport à l’environnement. Tel est l’objectif que poursuivent le Parc naturel régional d’Armorique et le Parc naturel marin d’Iroise depuis leur création. Cette bonne cohabitation de l’Homme et de ses ressources a élevé ce territoire au rang de « réserve de biosphère » par l’Unesco dès 1988. Pour les chercheurs, il est aussi un laboratoire à ciel ouvert. Etudier son « socio-écosystème » permet d’en dessiner la trajectoire et de proposer les solutions de demain dans un contexte de changement global.Travail collectif, cet atlas abondamment illustré fait un état des savoirs sur le sujet et invite à une découverte passionnante. Il montre combien la diversité est constitutive du vivant et pourquoi sa conservation est si importante pour les communautés humaines.

Abstract: International audience; Dernier reste de souveraineté française dans les îles Anglo-normandes depuis qu'un jugement de la Cour Internationale de Justice (CIJ) de la Haye a attribué les Minquiers et les Ecréhous à la couronne britannique en novembre 1953 (Morandière, 1956), l’archipel de Chausey a suscité peu de curiosité chez les préhistoriens, contrairement à ses voisines et en dépit d’un patrimoine mégalithique pourtant connu de longue date. C’est la raison pour laquelle deux campagnes de prospections d'une semaine ont été réalisées en 1994 et 1996. Conduites avec le but d’obtenir un état actualisé du potentiel préhistorique, elles ont notablement enrichi la carte archéologique, préparant ainsi le terrain à des recherches plus approfondies. Une dernière campagne a été effectuée en 2007, notamment pour géo-référencer le plus finement possible les sites à l’aide d’un GPS différentiel.Depuis d'autres prospections ont eu lieu (Sevin-Allouet et al, 2015 ; Gandois et al. 2019), ainsi que des opérations de surveillance et d'entretien des monuments qui témoignent du regain d'intérêt pour cet archipel.

Abstract: International audience; Cliff-top boulder deposits (CBDs) are morphological indicators of high-energy conditions. Since 2014, a monitoring of CBDs dynamics has been undertaken on the south-western coast of Iceland (Reykjanes Peninsula) to monitor their long-term activation (quarrying, transport and deposition) as a proxy of the inter-annual winter storminess variations and basaltic cliff erosion processes in a context of rocky coast progradation. Annual topomorphological surveys of four study sites were conducted and Structure-from-Motion photogrammetry was performed to quantify CBDs displacements. Hydrodynamic conditions were analyzed based on offshore waves and water level. Results show that CBDs activation occurs every winter, regardless of the variability of hydrodynamic conditions. Depending on the site and the year, more than 2% and 17% of the CBDs accumulated above 8 m to 10 m asl at the top of the cliffs are regularly mobilized. While inland movements represent the main mode of transport of blocks (between 50% to 60%), seaward and longshore movements are also well represented (10% to 20%). Longshore displacement is favored by the wide tabular morpho-structural setting of the wave-scour cliff-top platforms, which is explained by the structure of pāhoehoe lava flows. The activation of CBDs –measured from the volumes of displaced boulders–, shows a good correspondence with the frequency and duration of storms. However, as was the case during the winter of 2018-2019, it was rather the intensity of two highly morphogenic episodes combining storm waves and especially very high spring tide water levels, that generated the largest boulders displacements. Substantial interannual activation of the CBDs confirms that they constitute an important and still understudied proxy of the morphogenic system of high-energy rocky coasts, whose the dynamic in terms of carrying, transport, and deposition, could significantly increase with rising sea level.

Abstract: National audience; On the seashore, archaeologi’cal remains appear well preserved and sometimes immediatly visible during erosion periods. But the constraints are accumulating at all levels : limited intervention time, water, movement of tides, rapid change due to erosion, access conditions to excavations, difficulty encountered in implementation of heavy infrastructures. For these reasons, the interventions on this area have been limited for a long time to simple observations acompanied by samples. The rise of seashore issues and the increasing coastal erosion lead to real survey or excavation projects. Carried out nor in terrestrial conditions, nor in underwater conditions, these operations required an original methodology, new tools or sampling methods. Some examples choosen in various contexts illustrate the reactivity and the adaptations needed in the study of sites generally well preserved, supplying frequently organic remains, even fish or crustacean remains.; Sur estran, les vestiges apparaissent très bien conservés et parfois même immédiatement apparents lors de périodes d’érosion. Mais les contraintes s’accumulent à tous les niveaux : temps d’intervention limité, présence de l’eau, alternance des marées, rapidité de l’érosion dans certains secteurs, conditions d’accès ou de fouille, difficulté de mise en place d’infrastructures lourdes. Pour ces raisons, les interventions sur cet espace sont longtemps restées limitées à de simples observations accompagnées de prélèvements. La montée en puissance des problématiques littorales et l’accélération des processus d’érosion a alors motivé la mise au point de véritables projets de prospection et de fouille. Réalisés ni dans des conditions terrestres classiques ni dans des conditions subaquatiques, ces opérations ont souvent nécessité une méthodologie originale et l’appel à de nouveaux outils ou des modalités de prélèvements particulières. Quelques exemples choisis dans des contextes variés illustrent la réactivité et les adaptations nécessaires à des sites généralement bien conservés, souvent dotés de vestiges organiques, voire de restes de poissons ou de crustacés.

Abstract: International audience; L’Amélie beach is located near the mouth of the Gironde estuary (south-western Atlantic coast of France). It has been greatly eroded by recent storms, especially in the winter of 2013-2014. Erosion of the dune front and beach has uncovered a set of estuarine and aeolian sediment deposits containing numerous archaeological remains. A campaign of topographic surveys was undertaken with DGPS and TLS equipment during the springs of 2014 and 2015 along the 2 km length of L’Amélie beach in order to reconstruct the elevation and stratigraphy of these deposits. Sedimentological analyses (grain size, micro-faunal) were performed to better constrain the depositional environment. Archaeological remains and several radiocarbon dates obtained from sediment samples collected in the field were used to propose a consistent chronological framework for this sedimentary sequence. Ten main lithofacies were distinguished from the lower part of the beach to the top of the dune. The base of the sedimentary sequence is composed of Pleistocene deposits dating from MIS 9 (unit 1a) to MIS 2 (unit 1b) (Bosq et al., 2019). The Holocene sedimentary infilling began around 5000 BC with an accumulation of coarse marine sands, which suggests the presence of a tidal inlet. On both sides of this tidal channel, archaeological remains dating from the early Neolithic period up to the Bronze Age testify to a human occupation of the coastal area. From ca. 5000 to ca. 3500 cal. a BP, a characteristic deposit of intertidal mudflats indicates the transformation of the tidal inlet into estuarine marshes protected by a coastal dune barrier. Between ca. 3500 and ca. 3000 cal. a BP, the dune barrier records a phase of erosion resulting in the exposure of the marsh to stronger hydrodynamic conditions. From ca. 2800 to 1650 cal. a BP, a second phase of estuarine sedimentation is recognized. This period is characterized by significant human occupation as indicated by the presence of numerous archaeological remains of the Iron Age and Gallo-Roman periods, associated with the exploitation of a saltwater-to-brackish environment. From 1650 to 1250 cal. a BP, the estuarine salt marsh is gradually overrun by northward migrating coastal-dune fields. After 1250 cal. a BP, the marsh is completely covered by aeolian sands. These results are consistent with previously published data and allow us to detail the local sequence of palaeogeographic changes of the north-Médoc peninsula. Using the ‘sea-level index points’ method (Hijma et al., 2015), the analysis of radiocarbon dated levels also provides new relative sea level records for this part of the French Atlantic coast. Finally, the phases of coastal dune activity/stability recognized along L’Amélie beach are synchronous with those in the wider Aquitaine coastal region, suggesting a regional driving factor. 23. Stratigraphy and chronology of Pleistocene coastal deposits in northern Aquitaine, France: a reinvestigation

Abstract: Pleistocene deposits exposed along the coast of the Medoc area, south-west France, represent valuable palaeoenvironmental archives that have been the subject of extensive work in the past few decades. To further understand the palaeoenvironmental history and sedimentary dynamics of these deposits, a detailed lithostratigraphic study was performed on a series of new sections. Additionally, new chronological data were obtained from the combination of luminescence (OSL, IR-RF) and electron spin resonance (ESR) dating of quartz and feldspar grains (Kreutzer et al., 2018). The investigated sections comprise estuarine, lacustrine and peaty deposits (Negade Formation, Argiles du Gurp Formation), aeolian sands (Sables du Gurp Formation) and colluvial units (Gres de l'Amelie Formation). The Argiles du Gurp Formation, in which many remains of Palaeoloxodon antiquus were found, support the hypothesis of a progressive replacement of a tide-inluenced marsh by a peaty fresh-water pond during the Holsteinian Interglacial (MIS 11). IR-RF dating of green estuarine clays at L’Amelie, in the northernmost part of the investigated area, strongly suggests that they do not belong to the Argile du Gurp Formation, but were deposited during the MIS 9 sea level highstand. The estuarine deposits are overlain by sandsheets (Sables du Gurp Formation) dated to MIS 10 and MIS 8 at Pointe de la Negade in the southern part of the study area, and to MIS 8 at L’Amelie. Syngenetic frost cracks testify to a periglacial depositional environment. Regional studies show that the Sables du Gurp Formation is a local equivalent of the Sables des Landes Formation, and corresponds to the oldest aeolian phase recorded in south-west France so far. Colluvial material (Gres de l'Amelie Formation) dated to the Weichselian pleni-glacial (MIS 2) ill small palaeo-valleys incised in the Sables du Gurp Formation. Holocene coastal dunes cover the whole sequence.

Abstract: International audience; Un certain nombre de gravures préhistoriques à travers le monde sont interprétées comme des représentations cartographiques (fig. 1). La répétition de motifs et les lignes qui les relient donnent le sentiment d'être confronté à des cartes, bien qu'on peine à en faire la démonstration et que l'échelle de représentation nous échappe le plus souvent. Cela peut s'expliquer par les difficultés de datation de l'art rupestre, notre méconnaissance de l'environnement archéologique ou des déformations liées plus aux nécessités de la représentation (espaces réels, imaginaires) qu'à des aberrations de l'image mentale. Ces gravures préhistoriques peuvent être classées en deux catégories définies par Delano Smith (1987) : les cartes topographiques en plan et les cartes en images, mêlant des éléments du paysage en plan, en élévation ou en profil, mais aussi des signes anthropomorphes ou zoomorphes. Les cartes en images, qui apparaissent sans doute dès le Paléolithique supérieur (Utrilla et al., 2009) constituent plutôt des scènes, dans lesquelles le paysage apparaît comme secondaire par rapport à l’événement figuré. Ces interprétations ont fait l’objet de critiques, doutant de la capacité de l’Homme préhistorique à abstraire et concevoir l’espace en deux dimensions (Meece, 2006). Cependant, nombre de comptes-rendus d’explorateurs et d’ethnographes attestent d’une habileté des sociétés préindustrielles à dresser des cartes de l’espace parcouru, rapporté par d’autres ou fondé par des êtres surnaturels. Ces cartes peuvent être tracées au sol, sur des supports mobiles ou dans la pierre à des fins d’orientation, de gestion du territoire ou d’expressions spirituelles (Lewis, 1998 ; Flood, 2004).L’étude des gravures « cartographiques » a longtemps été tributaire de relevés en plan annihilant la surface tridimensionnelle du support. Or, le réexamen d’un certain nombre de représentations suggère un lien étroit entre les gravures qui mettent à profit voire modifient la topographie de leurs supports, et entre ces derniers et le relief environnant (Maggs, 1998 ; Casti, 2018). Ainsi, on peut se demander s’il n’y avait pas une évidence pour les « cartographes » préhistoriques à créer une immédiateté entre l’espace figuré et les gravures, en choisissant des affleurements idoines par leur emplacement, leur relief, voire même leur nature géologique (Alves, 2003).L’examen d’une dalle gravée de l’âge du Bronze, découverte à Saint-Bélec (Finistère), a permis pour la première fois en Europe de saisir l’échelle de représentation d’une telle carte en pierre (Nicolas et al., 2021). L’étude des gravures au moyen de scans 3D a permis de montrer que la dalle a été piquetée pour partie en bas-relief afin de représenter la haute vallée de l’Odet, tandis que plusieurs lignes ramifiées ou méandriformes paraissent figurer les cours d’eau alentours (fig. 2). Plusieurs analyses statistiques de formes et de réseaux ont été mené afin de quantifier le degré de similarité entre les gravures interprétées et la topographie environnante. Les résultats obtenus, équivalents à ceux de certaines cartes mentales ethnographiques, permettent de valider l’hypothèse que la dalle de Saint-Bélec figure bien une carte (fig. 3), d’en préciser l’échelle (c. 30 × 21 km) mais aussi de mesurer la déviation entre l’image mentale et l’espace représenté. Dans le contexte de l’âge du Bronze ancien armoricain, qui voit l’émergence de sociétés fortement hiérarchisées et divisées en une série de potentats, la dalle de Saint-Bélec est interprétée comme la probable figuration de l’un de ces « royaumes ».Ainsi, il n’est plus à douter que les sociétés préhistoriques avaient la capacité de cartographier leur environnement en deux ou en trois dimensions. Le recours à des acquisitions 3D des gravures, de leur support et de leur environnement immédiat apparaît alors comme indispensable si l’on souhaite mieux saisir l’échelle de représentation de ces cartes en pierre et les motivations qui ont présidé à leur réalisation.

25. Geoarcheology and Prehistory of the Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon archipelago: theoretical issues, methods and first results

Abstract: A first heritage approach was initiated in 2017 by the Prefecture of Saint- Pierre and Miquelon and the Ministry of Culture in order to give a temporal depth to a proposal to classify the archipelago as UNESCO World Heritage Site. It also involved intervention on the Amerindian and Paleoeskimo site of Anse-à-Henry, which has been strongly affected by marine erosion. The team gathered around Réginald Auger and Grégor Marchand wished to install this archaeological intervention in a wider reflection on the occupation networks of the entire archipelago before the European occupations, which should lead to an archaeological map. As a matter of principle, it is no longer possible to neglect erosion, which strongly constrains the nature of the «archaeological signal» delivered by the sediments and which damages the heritage. The landscapes of the past and the understanding of the resources available at different times are not possible either without a thorough investigation of geo¬graphical conditions. The archaeological project in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon therefore immediately associates geomorphology and archaeology, in the ser¬vice of a strong societal demand. This paper presents the methods adopted, with an initial state of the archaeological map established after processing LiDAR images in 2018, followed by surveys of prehistoric sites (habitats and volcanic rock extraction workshops). Finally, it focuses on the tools deployed at Anse-à-Henry, to identify habitat areas and propose an erosion model that should lead to recommendations to anticipate its destruction., Une première démarche patrimoniale a été initiée en 2017 par la Préfecture de Saint-Pierre et Miquelon et le Ministère de la Culture afin de donner une profondeur temporelle à une proposition de classement de l’archipel au titre du patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO. Il s’agissait également d’intervenir sur le site amérindien et paléoesquimau de l’Anse-à-Henry, fortement menacé par l’érosion marine. L’équipe regroupée autour de Réginald Auger et Grégor Marchand a souhaité installer cette intervention archéologique dans une plus ample réflexion sur les réseaux d’occupation de l’archipel en son entier avant les occupations européennes, qui doit mener à une carte archéologique. Par principe, il n’est plus possible de négliger l’érosion, qui contraint fortement la nature du « signal archéologique » livré par les sédiments et qui porte atteinte au patrimoine. Les paysages du passé et la compréhension des ressources disponibles à différentes époques ne se livrent pas non plus sans une enquête poussée des conditions géographiques. Le projet archéologique de Saint-Pierre et Miquelon associe donc d’emblée la géomorphologie et l’archéologie, au service d’une demande sociétale forte.

Abstract: Simple Summary Cancer outcomes are often indexed to the quality of the immune response to the tumor. Among immune cells, Foxp3+ regulatory T cells (Treg cells) are potent inhibitors of cancer immunity, and their presence within solid tumors is generally associated with a poor prognosis. Thus, understanding how Treg cell identity is controlled, is of utmost importance for the development of novel anti-cancer therapies. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge on the different intracellular pathways involved in the programming of Treg cell homeostasis and functions in cancer. We also highlight the therapeutic approaches aiming at targeting these regulators to enhance anti-tumor immunity. Abstract Extensive research in the past decades has highlighted the tight link between immunity and cancer, leading to the development of immunotherapies that have revolutionized cancer care. However, only a fraction of patients display durable responses to these treatments, and a deeper understanding of the cellular and mechanisms orchestrating immune responses to tumors is mandatory for the discovery of novel therapeutic targets. Among the most scrutinized immune cells, Forkhead Box Protein P3 (Foxp3)+ Regulatory T cells (Treg cells) are central inhibitors of protective anti-tumor immunity. These tumor-promoting functions render Treg cells attractive immunotherapy targets, and multiple strategies are being developed to inhibit their recruitment, survival, and function in the tumor microenvironment. In this context, it is critical to decipher the complex and multi-layered molecular mechanisms that shape and stabilize the Treg cell transcriptome. Here, we provide a global view of the transcription factors, and their upstream signaling pathways, involved in the programming of Treg cell homeostasis and functions in cancer. We also evaluate the feasibility and safety of novel therapeutic approaches aiming at targeting specific transcriptional regulators.

Abstract: The main aim of the present work is to study the effect of axial preload on the durability of aerospace fastened joints. For that purpose, experimental and numerical approaches are adopted to demonstrate the beneficial effect of axial preload on the fatigue life of representative aerospace fastened joints. In the experimental approach, an innovative tightening technique, based on iterative tightening, is used to reduce the scatter habitually induced on preload when the conventional torque tightening technique is employed. The main benefit, besides the use of this alternative tightening technique, is to allow an accurate preload to be introduced without geometry or stiffness modification, thus enabling the preload effect to be determined precisely. The results show the effect of preload on the static resistance, fatigue life and failure mode of fastened joints. In the numerical approach, a 3D finite element model is developed and the analysis of its behavior confirms and explains experimental observations. Analysis of longitudinal stresses through critical paths shows that the effect of high preload is beneficial because it reduces hydrostatic pressure and shear stress amplitude, thus leading to longer fatigue lives. The correlation between experimental observations and the numerical results is studied using SWT and Crossland multiaxial fatigue criteria.

Abstract: International audience; We discuss paleoenvironments of north-western France over the last 7 kyrs in terms of: i) long-term changes (relative sea-level rise and boreal summer insolation), ii) rapid climate changes (millennial-scale Bond events and multi-decadal regimes of the North Atlantic Oscillation: NAO) and iii) growing human impacts in watersheds. Our study focuses on the CBT-CS11 core, retrieved in the northern Bay of Biscay, with new high-resolution (70 years) palynological data (dinoflagellate cysts and pollen), combined with sedimentological and oxygen stable isotopic records. This multiproxy approach enabled us to gain a better understanding of the influence of varying Middle to Late Holocene climate regimes on marine, coastal and terrestrial ecosystems as well as on human coastal societies. We especially show that the slowdown of the relative sea-level rise, starting at around 5.9 ka BP, led to the stabilization of tidal flats in estuarine environments. Subsequently, increasing river flows to the ocean resulted in a progressive seasonal stratification of the shelf under increasing winter precipitations and establishment of the modern winter thermohaline front at 3.3 ka BP. In addition, within the 4–2 ka BP interval, palynological and sedimentological evidence suggests increasing river discharges in north-western France, in a context of a weakened Atlantic subpolar gyre and recurrent negative “NAO-like” conditions. Finally, we identified a major transition at around 1.2 ka BP (Early Middle-Ages) that appears to be linked to a period of maximal anthropogenic landscape opening and soil erosion, implying stronger primary productivity in coastal surface waters of the studied region.

Abstract: National audience; Fouillé de 2003 à 2011, le site de Beg ar Loued, au sud de l’île de Molène, a livré les vestiges de deux maisons en pierres sèches occupées de 2150 à 1750 avant notre ère. Son étude a permis de mieux comprendre le mode de vie de cette communauté qui, bien qu’insulaire, n’était pas à l’écart des circuits d’échanges et était en phase avec les changements culturels identifiés sur le proche continent.

Abstract: International audience; Excavated between 2003 and 2011, the site of Beg ar Loued in the southern part of Molène Island yielded the remains of two superimposed dry stone houses which were occupied between 2150 and 1750 cal. BCE. At that time, the Molène archipelago was in a similar form as it is today, except the foreshores, which were much larger. The site was then a hundred meters from the shoreline. The study of the site allowed a more comprehensive understanding of the way of life of this island society. The elevations of these buildings are relatively well preserved thanks to the rather quick covering of the site by sand dunes after its abandonment. In addition, the presence of dense shell middens has allowed a quality conservation of organic remains, which allows a clear idea of the way of life of these island societies in the far west of Armorica. The architecture, the material culture and the organic remains provide keys to a better understanding of the exploitation of these insular landscapes and thus the economy of these human groups. Meanwhile, further research was undertaken to identify more closely the environment in which these human groups lived. Thus, all the remains collected allowed us to question the degree of autarky of these island communities but also to highlight their neighbouring links with the continent. Although limited to a surface area of 360 m², the excavation of the Beg ar Loued settlement has revealed the almost complete plans of two buildings in a dry stone technique which overlap partially and belong to two distinct phases of the Early Bronze Age, c. 2200-1950 and c. 2000-1750 cal. BCE. However, the eastern end of these buildings was completely levelled due to cultivation in recent times. Nevertheless, postholes and peripheral structures allow us to propose a reconstruction of these buildings as a whole. The first house was oriented east-west and had an elongated oval shape or an apse. Inside, a central hearth, the postholes supporting the framework and the last remains of a pavement could be recognised. After a short phase of abandonment, the second house which is the better preserved was built on the ruins of the first house but reducing the inner space to the west and probably to the east. BC. À cette période, le plateau Molénais, déjà insulaire depuis le Néolithique ancien, se présentait dans une forme assez proche de l’actuel, exception faite des estrans qui étaient beaucoup plus vastes. Le site se trouvait alors à une centaine de mètres du trait de côte. L’étude du site a permis de mieux comprendre le mode de vie de cette communauté insulaire. Celle-ci pratiquait l’agriculture et l’élevage, complétés par la pêche sur estran, la collecte des patelles et, dans une moindre mesure, la chasse aux oiseaux migrateurs. La culture matérielle montre que ce groupe exploitait les ressources locales : argile, cordons de galets et affleurements rocheux. Ce tableau d’une société autarcique se doit pourtant d’être nuancé, car l’architecture des bâtiments, les formes céramiques, la technologie lithique et la métallurgie sont autant d’indices montrant que cette société n’était pas à l’écart des circuits d’échange et qu’elle était en phase avec les changements et les innovations culturels identifiés sur le proche continent. Abstract: International audience; Due to the richness of its coastal environments, particularly lagoons and mangrove, the low-lying areas of the Omani coastline attracted settlements very early. However, the low-lying coasts are highly mobile landscapes, whose evolution is controlled by multiple factors acting at different timescales, from episodic (extreme events) to millennial timescales (gradual shoreline changes). From a geoarchaeological analysis (geomorphological mapping, archaeological survey, core drilling, and sedimentological, faunic and microfaunic analyses), this study proposes for the first time to reconstruct the landscape evolution of the Quriyat coastal plain landscape during the Mid-Late Holocene. Results indicate a coastal landscape dominated by large lagoons and mangroves during the mid-Holocene (5th millennium). Between 6712 -6501 cal. BP and 6183−5992 cal. BP, an extreme wave event identified as a tsunami, is registered in the southern part of the coast. Between 4223−3984 cal. BP and 4150−3981 cal. BP, lagoons were quickly clogging over more than 3.5 km in favour of the development of sebkhas or dune fields. We suggest this rapid evolution is related to erosional crises linked to the setting up of arid conditions in this part of the Omani coast. The production of several sea-level index points shows a great stability of the relative sea-level over the last 6.000 yearscal. BP and point out the predominant role of sedimentary infilling in the coastline evolution of Quriyat. The high sedimentation rates, added to the exposure of coastal hazards, partially explains the relatively low density of archaeological sites found in the Quriyat coastal plain, despite the presence of major shell-midden (Khor Milk I and II), which attest the old attractiveness of this sector. From geoarchaeological and taphonomic points of view, the Quriyat area is considered as having non-favourable conditions for the preservation of archaeological remains.

Les opérations de terrain réalisées dans des contraintes extrêmement fortes ont nécessité la mise en place d'un protocole de travail spécifique. In the North Médoc (Gironde department), between the communes of Soulac-sur-Mer and Montalivet-les-Bains, the sandy shoreline has been exposed to a very strong erosion. Dealing with a rich archaeological, historical and environmental heritage, an interdisciplinary team has been constituted, consisting of archaeologists, geomorphologists and biologists. The field operations realised in very hard conditions needed the introduction of a specific protocol.

Abstract: Sedimentological, palynological, and micropalaeontological studies carried out throughout the first half of the Holocene, during the Mesolithic/Neolithic transition in the Bay of Brest (i.e. 9200–9000 and 6600–5300 cal. BP) and in the Bay of Douarnenez (i.e. 9200–8400 cal. BP), allowed characterizing coastal environmental changes under the increasing influence of the relative sea-level rise. The gradual flooding of the two studied sites implied a transition from river valleys to oceanic bays as revealed by the gradual retreat of salt marsh environments, as detected through palynological analysis. In addition, these high-resolution studies highlight the regional imprint of the North Atlantic millennial climate variability in north-western coastal environments. Two cold climate events are indeed suggested to have been locally marked by a moisture increase, mainly detected by increases in Lingulodinium machaerophorum, Corylus, and Alnus percentages at 8550 cal. BP in the Bay of Douarnenez and at 6250 cal. BP in the Bay of Brest. Moreover, regarding the Neolithic transition timing in the Bay of Douarnenez, large pollen grains of Poaceae (i.e. Cerealia-type pollen grains) have been detected at around 8600 cal. BP, that is, 1500 years before the general accepted cereal cropping appearance in Western France. These results, consistent with other palynological studies conducted in the French Atlantic coast, could underline a Mesolithic ‘proto-agriculture’ in Brittany.

Abstract: Whereas immunotherapies have revolutionized the treatment of different solid and hematological cancers, their efficacy in nodal peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCLs) is limited, due to a lack of understanding of the immune response they trigger. To fully characterize the immune tumor microenvironment (TME) of PTCLs, we performed spectral flow cytometry analyses on 11 angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphomas (AITL), 7 PTCL, not otherwise specified (PTCL, NOS) lymph node samples, and 10 non-tumoral control samples. The PTCL TME contained a larger proportion of regulatory T cells and exhausted CD8+ T cells, with enriched expression of druggable immune checkpoints. Interestingly, CD39 expression was up-regulated at the surface of most immune cells, and a multi-immunofluorescence analyses on a retrospective cohort of 43 AITL patients demonstrated a significant association between high CD39 expression by T cells and poor patient prognosis. Together, our study unravels the complex TME of nodal PTCLs, identifies targetable immune checkpoints, and highlights CD39 as a novel prognostic factor.

Abstract: International audience; The Sillon de Talbert is situated on the Northern coast of Brittany; it is a large 3.5 km-long swash-aligned gravel spit barrier comprising a volume of sediment of 1.23x106 m3. Since 2002 a morphodynamic survey was carried. It is based on annual DEMs and monthly beach profile measurements. Waves and water levels are also surveyed using modelling data and field measurements. The 15-years (2002-2017) sediment budget calculation shows that cross-shore transfers are dominant and represent a total volume of 370,000 m3, while the longshore sediment transfer is estimated at about 50,000 m3. However, considering the volume of sediment eroded from the beachface (as much as –411,000 m3), and the cross-shore and longshore sediment accumulation (reaching +420,000 m3), the global sediment budget is balanced for the whole survey period. The landward displacement of the spit due to rollover processes has increased almost doubled during the last 15 years with rates of retreat of 2 m.yr-1 between 2002 and 2017, vs 1.2 m.yr-1 between 1930 and 2010. Storm events control more than 95% of this retreat due to catastrophic overwash/inundation processes. The spit retreat has led to the opening of a breach in the proximal section at the beginning of March 2018, which has experienced a rapid enlargement (35 vs 15 m) and deepening (3.4 vs 1.25 m) over the last seven months. The morphological evolution of the Sillon de Talbert is driven by anthropogenic forcing (i.e., impact of coastal defence structures, cutting off of longshore sediment transport), and natural forcing such as the depletion of the supply of sediment from the platform, and the increase of extreme storm events over the last few years.; Le Sillon de Talbert est situé sur la côte nord de Bretagne ; c’est une flèche littorale de galets faisant face à la houle, qui s’étend sur 3,5 km et dont le volume de sédiment atteint 1,23 106 m3. Depuis 2002 un suivi morphodynamique a été entrepris.Il est basé sur des levés annuels, permettant de calculer des MNT, et des mesures mensuelles de profils de plage. Le calcul du bilan sédimentaire sur les 15 ans (2002-2017) montre que les transits transversaux sont dominants et représentent un volume total de 370 000 m3, alors que le transit longitudinal est estimé à environ 50 000 m3. Toutefois, considérant le volume de plus de –411 000 m3 de sédiment érodé à la plage avant, et le volume transversal et longitudinal accumulé atteignant +420 000 m3, le bilan sédimentaire global sur l’ensemble de la période de suivi est équilibré. Le déplacement vers la terre lié au phénomène de rollover a doublé durant les quinze dernières années avec un taux de recul de 2 m/an entre 2002 et 2017, contre 1,2 m/an entre 1930 et 2010. Les évènements tempétueux contrôlent plus de 95 % de ce recul lors des processus catastrophiques de submersion/inondation. Le recul de la flèche a conduit, au début du mois de mars 2018, à l’ouverture d’une brèche dans la partie proximale qui s’est rapidement élargie et approfondie, passant respectivement de 15 à 35 m, et de 1,25 à 3,4 m, au cours des 7 derniers mois. L’évolution morphologique du sillon de Talbert est commandée par des forçages anthropiques (i.e., l’impact des ouvrages de défense côtière qui bloquent le transit sédimentaire longitudinal), et des forçages naturels, comme la pénurie de sédiments accumulés sur la plateforme pour l’alimentation de la flèche, ou l’augmentation des évènements extrêmes durant les dernières années.

Abstract: The archipelago of Molène consists in a large number of islands, islets and rocky outcrops representing the emerged part of a large plateau covered by shallow waters. The geomorphological singularity of this area lies in the contrast opposing the western coasts facing the incident waves, that are always rocky, and the northern and eastern ones that are sheltered. The latter, on the leeside, consist in large and voluminous accumulations of pebbles forming trailing beaches. This coarse-grained sediment is mainly derived from the wave action on the continental shelf during the Flandrian transgression. Presently, the other sources of material, cliffs cut into the bedrock or pleistocene deposits such as Eemian beaches or periglacial head, participate hardly and occasionally to the feeding of beaches. Except Banneg island, the shoreline dynamics of the Molène archipelago were reconstruct using aerial photographs analysis for the period 1952-2013 and DGPS survey for the period 2002-2014. Results show (i) a clear trend to erosion and shoreline retreat, (ii) a spatial variability in the evolution of the coastline for different types of coastline and orientation, (iii) high temporal variability and the impact of storm events, (iv) sedimentary transfer towards the trailing beaches. This study emphasizes the scarcity of coarse-grained sediments along the coastline of the Molène archipelago. This coastal sediment is mainly derived from the wave action on the continental shelf during the Flandrian transgression. Presently, the other sources of material, cliffs cut into the bedrock or pleistocene deposits such as Eemian beaches or periglacial head, participate hardly and occasionally to the feeding of beaches. Indeed, their foot is located way above the high tide level and very seldom eroded when strong storms occur during high spring tides., L’archipel de Molène consiste en une constellation d’îles, îlots et écueils qui forment la partie émergée d’un vaste plateau recouvert d’eaux peu profondes. La singularité géomorphologique de cet ensemble réside dans le contraste opposant les côtes toujours rocheuses faisant face à l’ouest, direction de provenance des houles dominantes, à celles qui sont en position abritée. Ces dernières, sous le vent, sont des côtes d’accumulation constituées de plages étendues et volumineuses au regard de la taille des pointements rocheux qui les abritent. Elles sont majoritairement composées de galets. À l’exception de l’île de Banneg, dont l’évolution morphologique est dominée par des processus extrêmement violents et épisodiques mobilisant des blocs cyclopéens, la dynamique du trait de côte a été étudiée sur l’ensemble de l’archipel de Molène à partir d’une analyse de photos aériens IGN pour la période 1952-2013 et à partir de suivis au DGPS sur la période 2002-2014. Les résultats montrent (i) une tendance nette à l’érosion et au recul du rivage, (ii) une forte variabilité spatiale dans les évolutions du trait de côte selon les types de côte et leur orientation, (iii) une grande variabilité temporelle et une forte signature des événements tempétueux, (iv) un transfert sédimentaire dirigé vers l’est, dans le sens des houles dominantes. Cette étude souligne une pénurie sédimentaire des rivages de l’archipel dont l’essentiel de ce matériel sédimentaire provient du balayage du plateau continental par les vagues, lors de la transgression marine holocène. Les autres sources de matériel grossier, à savoir les falaises rocheuses et les falaises entaillées dans du matériel périglaciaire ou des plages anciennes, ne participent actuellement que très peu et très épisodiquement à l’alimentation des plages.

Abstract: International audience; The abundant ichthyofauna on the archaeological site of Beg ar Loued reflects a high consumption of fish by people occupying the island of Molène during the Early Bronze Age. This raises the question of fishing techniques employed, especially from nearby stone fish traps, which are very numerous on the foreshores of Brittany. This study provides an inventory of these structures on the foreshore of the archipelago of Molène, based on aerial, pedestrian, underwater, and high-resolution bathymetric surveys. Functional stone fish traps during the Early Bronze Age were identified from their position in relation to former tide levels. A total of 36 (proven or likely) structures have been identified around the archipelago. Only 10 of them were functional at the Early Bronze Age. Other traps are located at a lower depth, indicating an earlier use, probably from the early Neolithic.; La présence d’une abondante ichtyofaune sur le site de Beg ar Loued témoigne d’une forte consommation de poissons par les populations ayant occupé l’île de Molène à l’âge du Bronze ancien, soulevant la question des techniques de pêche employées et la présence éventuelle de barrages de pêcherie à proximité. Cette étude dresse l’inventaire de ce type de structure sur les estrans de l’archipel, en s’appuyant sur une série de prospections aériennes, pédestres et subaquatiques, ainsi que sur un ensemble de relevés bathymétriques à haute résolution. Les pêcheries fonctionnelles à l’âge du Bronze ancien ont été repérées en se basant sur leur position par rapport aux anciens niveaux de marée. Un total de 36 structures, avérées ou possibles, a été identifié autour de l’archipel. Seulement 10 d'entre elles étaient fonctionnelles au Bronze ancien. Les autres pièges sont situés à une altitude plus basse, indiquant une utilisation plus ancienne, probablement dès le début du Néolithique.

Abstract: The northern coast of the Medoc between Soulac-sur-Mer and Montalivet-les-Bains has a rich archaeological heritage that is being directly impacted by coastal erosion. A series of clay-peat palaeosols that formed in ancient estuarine marshes holds evidence of intensive occupation from the Mesolithic until the end of the Roman period. Within this framework, our research focused on the two key sites of La Lede du Gurp (Grayan-et-l’Hopital) and L’Amelie (Soulac-sur-Mer), where an interdisciplinary approach based on comparison of archaeological, sedimentary and palaeo-environmental data has made it possible to situate the main phases of occupation in their environmental context. This work has benefited from field documentation that is exceptionally well-preserved in wet sediments sealed beneath the present-day dune system. The most fleeting traces (animal tracks) like the sturdiest anthropic structures are preserved, as are many organic remains. These items provide access to first-rate documentation for reconstructing the range of activities practised in a specific ecosystem: salt production, livestock grazing, shellfish collecting, passage and carriage, and funerary and symbolic practices. Study of occupation over the long term reveals an alternating pattern of dynamic phases and decline phases that seem to be correlated with changes in the local environment.

50. Holocene coastal changes along the Gironde estuary (SW France): new insights from the North Medoc peninsula beach/dune system

Abstract: International audience; Located at the mouth of the Gironde estuary (southwestern Atlantic coast of France), the Amélie beach was strongly eroded during the recent stormy events, especially in the winter of 2013-2014. The escarpment at the dune front and the truncation of the beach uncovered a set of estuarine and aeolian sediment deposits containing numerous archaeological remains. A campaign of topographic surveys was undertaken with DGPS and TLS materials during the springs of 2014 and 2015 along the 2 km length of the Amélie beach in order to reconstruct the elevation and stratigraphy of these deposits. Sedimentological analyses (grain size, micro-faunal) were performed to better constrain the depositional environment. Archaeological remains and several radiocarbon dates obtained from sediment samples collected in the field were used to propose a consistent chronological framework for this sedimentary sequence. Ten main lithofacies were distinguished from the lower part of the beach to the top of the dune. The base of the sedimentary sequence is composed to of Pleistocene deposits dating from MIS9 (unit 1a) to MIS2 (Unit 1b) (Bosq et al., this issue). The Holocene sedimentary infilling began around 5000 BC with an accumulation of marine coarse sands, which suggests the presence of a tidal inlet. On both sides of this tidal channel, archaeological remains dating from the early Neolithic period up to the Bronze Age testify to a human occupation of the coastal area. From ca. 5000 to ca. 3500 cal. BP, a characteristic deposit of intertidal mudflats indicates the transformation of the tidal inlet into estuarine marshes protected by a coastal dune barrier. Between ca. 3500 and ca. 3000 cal. BP, the dune barrier records a phase of erosion which results in the exposure of the marsh to stronger hydrodynamic conditions. From ca. 2800 to 1650, a second phase of estuarine sedimentation is recognized. This period is characterized by significant human occupation as indicated by the presence of numerous archaeological remains of the Iron Age and Gallo-roman periods, associated with the exploitation of a saltwater-to-brackish environment. From 1650 to 1250 cal. BP, the estuarine saltmarsh is gradually overrun by northward migrating coastal-dune fields. After 1250 cal. BP, the marsh is completely covered by the aeolian sands. These results are consistent with previously published data and allow to locally details the sequence of paleogeographic changes of the north-Medoc peninsula. Using the "sea-level index points" method (Hijma et al., 2015), the analysis of radiocarbon dated levels also provides new relative sea-level records for this part of the French Atlantic coast. Finally, the phases of coastal dune activity/stability recognized along the Amélie beach are synchronous with those in the wider Aquitaine coastal region, suggesting a regional driving factor. We propose that the shared sedimentary dynamics are the consequence of the onshore migration of intertidal and subtidal sand banks distributed at the mouth of the Gironde.; Le long du littoral de Soulac, à l’embouchure de la Gironde, l’érosion marine provoquée par les récentes tempêtes hivernales a mis au jour un ensemble de dépôts sédimentaires à caractère estuarien et dunaire contenant de nombreux vestiges archéologiques. Des relevés topographiques réalisés au DGPS et TLS durant les printemps 2014 et 2015 ont été effectués le long des 2 km de la plage de l’Amélie dans le but de reconstituer la stratigraphie de ces dépôts. Des analyses sédimentologiques (granulométrie, micro-faune) ont été réalisées afin de caractériser les unités lithologiques et reconstituer le cadre paléoenvironnemental. L’étude du mobilier archéologique et plusieurs datations par le radiocarbone ont permis de proposer un cadre chronologique cohérent pour cette séquence sédimentaire. Dix principaux lithofaciès ont été distingués depuis le bas de plage jusqu’au sommet de la dune. La base de la séquence se compose de formations pléistocènes datée du MIS9 au MIS2 (Bosq et al., ce volume), lesquelles montrent une topographie déprimée dans la partie centrale de la plage de l’Amélie. Le colmatage sédimentaire de cette dépression débute vers 5000 BC par le dépôt d’un sable grossier marin suggérant la présence d’une passe tidale. De part et d’autre de ce vaste chenal de marée, des vestiges archéologiques datant du Néolithique ancien jusqu’à l’âge du Bronze témoignent d’une occupation humaine du secteur. De 5000 à 3500 cal. BP environ, un dépôt caractéristique des vasières intertidales indique la transformation du milieu en marais estuarien protégé par un cordon dunaire. Entre 3500 et 3000 cal. BP, ce cordon enregistre une phase d’érosion qui se solde par l’ouverture du marais sur la mer. De 2800 à 1650 cal. BP, une seconde phase de sédimentation estuarienne est reconnue, signalant le retour à des conditions d’abri. Cette période se caractérise par une forte occupation humaine et la présence de nombreux vestiges archéologiques de l’âge du Fer et de l’Antiquité associés à l’exploitation d’un environnement intertidal à saumâtre. De 1650 à 1250 cal. BP, le marais est progressivement colmaté par les dépôts dunaires qui progradent en direction du nord. Après 1250 cal. BP, le marais est entièrement recouvert par les sables éoliens. Ces résultats sont cohérents avec les données publiées antérieurement et permettent de détailler localement la séquence des changements paléogéographiques de la péninsule du nord-médoc. En appliquant la méthode des « sea-level index points » (Hijma et al., 2015), l’analyse des niveaux datés par le radiocarbone apporte également de nouvelles données sur la remontée du niveau marin relatif dans cette partie du littoral atlantique français. Enfin, les phases d’activité et de stabilité des dunes reconnues le long de la plage de l’Amélie montre un déphasage par rapport aux évolutions dunaires du reste de la côte aquitaine et suggère une dynamique sédimentaire influencée par la migration vers la côte des bancs de sables intertidaux et subtidaux distribués à l’embouchure de la Gironde.
