The booming expansion of nanotechnology poses the problem of environmental pollution by nanoparticles (NPs). The available methods for sensing and removing NPs from the environment are typically lengthy and instrumentally demanding. The recent introduction of NP-imprinted polymers (NPIPs), either as films or bulk materials, is an important step toward the simple and fast sensing and removal of NPs from water and air. Similarly to the well-established molecularly imprinted polymers, in NPIPs, an organic or inorganic polymeric material is first obtained with embedded NPs. Then, the NPs are chemically or physically removed by acting as a template, i.e., leaving a polymeric matrix with cavities of the same shape and dimensions. After the first examples were published in 2014, the literature has so far reported an increasing number of NPIPs that are capable of reuptaking NPs from water (or, more rarely, air), with remarkable size and shape selectivity. By laying an NPIP layer on a reporter (typically an electrode), devices are obtained that are capable of sensing NPs. On the other hand, bulk NPIPs can reuptake massive amounts of NPs and have been used for the quantitative removal of NPs from water. This review begins with an overview of NP-imprinted hollow capsules, which can be considered the ancestors of NPIPs, both as conception and as preparative methods. Then, the literature on NPIPs is reviewed. Finally, the possible evolutions of NPIPs are highlighted from the perspective of stepping toward their real-life, field use.

Prussian Blue nanoparticles (PBnps) are now popular in nanomedicine thanks to the FDA approval of PB. Despite the numerous papers suggesting or describing the in vivo use of PBnps, no studies have been carried out on the formation of a protein corona on the PBnp surface and its stabilizing role. In this paper, we studied qualitatively and quantitatively the corona formed by the most abundant protein of blood, human serum albumin (HSA). Cubic PBnps (41 nm side), prepared in citric acid solution at PB concentration 5 × 10−4 M, readily form a protein corona by redissolving ultracentrifuged PBnp pellets in HSA solutions, with CHSA ranging from 0.025 to 7.0 mg/mL. The basic decomposition of PBnp@HSA was studied in phosphate buffer at the physiological pH value of 7.4. Increased stability with respect to uncoated PBnps was observed at all concentrations, but a minimum CHSA value of 3.0 mg/mL was determined to obtain stability identical to that observed at serum-like HSA concentrations (35–50 mg/mL). Using a modified Lowry protocol, the quantity of firmly bound HSA in the protein corona (hard corona) was determined for all the CHSA used in the PBnp@HSA synthesis, finding increasing quantities with increasing CHSA. In particular, an HSA/PBnp number in the 1500–2300 range was found for CHSA 3.0–7.0 mg/mL, largely exceeding the 180 HSA/PBnp value calculated for an HSA monolayer on a PBnp. Finally, the stabilization brought by the HSA corona allowed us to carry out pH-spectrophotometric titrations on PBnp@HSA in the 3.5-9-0 pH range, revealing a pKa value of 6.68 for the water molecules bound to the Fe3+ centers on the PBnp surface, whose deprotonation is responsible for the blue-shift of the PBnp band from 706 nm (acidic solution) to 685 nm (basic solution).

Prussian blue is an ancient artificial pigment. Its biocompatibility and the possibility of synthesizing it in nanometric size stimulated the interest of the scientific community. Many uses of Prussian blue nanoparticles have been reported in the field of nanomedicine. More recently, interest into the potential application of Prussian blue nanoparticles as antibacterial agents has spread. Literature regarding Prussian blue and its analogs as antibacterial materials is still limited, but the number of papers has grown quickly over the last 2–3 years.

Bacterial contamination is a severe issue that affects medical devices, hospital tools and surfaces. When microorganisms adhere to a surface (e.g., medical devices or implants) they can develop into a biofilm, thereby becoming more resistant to conventional biocides and disinfectants. Nanoparticles can be used as an antibacterial agent in medical instruments or as a protective coating in implantable devices. In particular, attention is being drawn to photothermally active nanoparticles that are capable of converting absorbed light into heat. These nanoparticles can efficiently eradicate bacteria and biofilms upon light activation (predominantly near the infrared to near-infrared spectral region) due a rapid and pronounced local temperature increase. By using this approach new, protective, antibacterial surfaces and materials can be developed that can be remotely activated on demand. In this review, we summarize the state-of-the art regarding the application of various photothermally active nanoparticles and their corresponding nanocomposites for the light-triggered eradication of bacteria and biofilms.

A synthetic approach has been developed to prepare silica gel monoliths that embed well separated silver or gold spherical nanoparticles (NP), with diameters of 8, 18 and 115 nm. Fe3+, O2/cysteine and HNO3 were all successfully used to oxidize and remove silver NP from silica, while aqua regia was necessary for gold NP. In all cases, NP-imprinted silica gel materials were obtained, with spherical voids of the same dimensions of the dissolved particles. By grinding the monoliths, we prepared NP-imprinted silica powders that were able to efficiently reuptake silver ultrafine NP (Ag-ufNP, d = 8 nm) from aqueous solutions. Moreover, the NP-imprinted silica powders showed a remarkable size selectivity, based on the best match between NP radius and the curvature radius of the cavities, driven by the optimization of attractive Van der Waals forces between SiO2 and NP. Ag-ufNP are increasingly used in products, goods, medical devices, disinfectants, and their consequent diffusion in the environment is of rising concern. Although limited here to a proof-of-concept level, the materials and methods described in this paper may be an efficient solution for capturing Ag-ufNP from environmental waters and to safely dispose them.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is becoming widely used as an analytical tool, and the search for stable and highly responsive SERS substrates able to give ultralow detection of pollutants is a current challenge. In this paper we boosted the SERS response of Gold nanostars (GNS) demonstrating that their coating with a layer of silver having a proper thickness produces a 7-fold increase in SERS signals. Glass supported monolayers of these GNS@Ag were then prepared using simple alcoxyliane chemistry, yielding efficient and reproducible SERS chips, which were tested for the detection of molecules representative of different classes of pollutants. Among them, norfloxacin was detected down to 3 ppb, which is one of the lowest limits of detection obtained with this technique for the analyte.

Two-photon and single photon laser writing are used here to fabricate 3D proteinaceous microstructures with photothermal functionality in the near-infrared spectral region and tunable elasticity. The photo-cross-linking is initiated in bovine serum albumin (BSA) by Rose Bengal and the photo-thermal effect arises from gold nanostars dispersed in the ink. Massive energy transfer of the plasmonic resonances of the gold nanostars to the photo-initiator is avoided by employing an anionic photo-initiator, allowing to obtain effective photo-crosslinking of BSA and to retrieve a substantial photo-thermal efficiency of the fabricated structures. On these microstructures, with a gold atom concentration as low as 1% w/w, a highly localized temperature increase can be quickly (?1 s) reached and maintained under continuous wave laser irradiation at 800 nm. The photothermal efficiency under continuous wave laser irradiation depends on the thickness of the microstructure and can reach 12.2 +/- 0.4 ?C/W. The Young modulus of the fabricated structures is estimated from the measurement of their bending under steady flow and falls in the range of most typical tissues, suggesting that they can be adopted as promising platform for future applications in regenerative nanomedicine.

In this paper, we report on the preparation of Imidazole-functionalized glass surfaces, demonstrating the ability of a dinuclear Cu(II) complex of a macrocyclic ligand to give a “cascade” interaction with the deprotonated forms of grafted imidazole moieties. In this way, we realized a prototypal example of an antimicrobial surface based on a supramolecular approach, obtaining a neat microbicidal effect using low amounts of the described copper complex.

Heating has recently been applied as an alternative to electrical stimulation to modulate excitability and to induce neuritogenesis and the expression of neuronal markers; however, a long-term functional differentiation has not been described so far. Here, we present the results obtained by a new approach for scalable thermal stimulation on the behavior of a model of dorsal root ganglion neurons, the F-11 cell line. Initially, we performed experiments of bulk stimulation in an incubator for different time intervals and temperatures, and significant differences in neurite elongation and in electrophysiological properties were observed in cultures exposed at 41.5 °C for 30 min. Thus, we exposed the cultures to the same temperature increase using a near-infrared laser to irradiate a disc of Prussian blue nanoparticles and poly-vinyl alcohol that we had adhered to the outer surface of the petri dish. In irradiated cells, neurites were significantly longer, and the electrophysiological properties (action potential firing frequency and spontaneous activity) were significantly increased compared to the control. These results show for the first time that a targeted thermal stimulation could induce morphological and functional neuronal differentiation and support the future application of this method as a strategy to modify neuronal behavior in vivo.

The unique photothermal properties of non-spherical gold nanoparticles under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation find broad application in nanotechnology and nanomedicine. The combination of their plasmonic features with widely used biocompatible poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) films can lead to novel hybrid polymeric materials with tunable photothermal properties and a wide range of applications. In this study, thin PVA films containing highly photothermally efficient gold nanostars (GNSs) were fabricated and their properties were studied. The resulting films displayed good mechanical properties and a pronounced photothermal effect under NIR irradiation. The local photothermal effect triggered by NIR irradiation of the PVA-GNS films is highly efficient at killing bacteria, therefore providing an opportunity to develop new types of protective antibacterial films and coatings.

Bacteria infections and related biofilms growth on surfaces of medical devices are a serious threat to human health. Controlled hyperthermia caused by photothermal effects can be used to kill bacteria and counteract biofilms formation. Embedding of plasmonic nano-objects like gold nanostars (GNS), able to give an intense photothermal effect when irradiated in the NIR, can be a smart way to functionalize a transparent and biocompatible material like polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). This process enables bacteria destruction on surfaces of PDMS-made medical surfaces, an action which, in principle, can also be exploited in subcutaneous devices. We prepared stable and reproducible thin PDMS films containing controllable quantities of GNS, enabling a temperature increase that can reach more than 40 degrees. The hyperthermia exerted by this hybrid material generates an effective thermal microbicidal effect, killing bacteria with a near infrared (NIR) laser source with irradiance values that are safe for skin.

Abstract Photo-responsive antibacterial surfaces combining both on-demand photo-switchable activity and sustained biocidal release were prepared using sequential chemical grafting of nano-objects with different geometries and functions. The multi-layered coating developed incorporates a monolayer of near-infrared active silica-coated gold nanostars (GNS) decorated by silver nanoparticles (AgNP). This modular approach also enables us to unravel static and photo-activated contributions to the overall antibacterial performance of the surfaces, demonstrating a remarkable synergy between these two mechanisms. Complementary microbiological and imaging evaluations on both planktonic and surface-attached bacteria provided new insights on these distinct but cooperative effects.

PVA films with embedded either silver nanoparticles (AgNP), NIR-absorbing photothermal gold nanostars (GNS), or mixed AgNP+GNS were prepared in this research. The optimal conditions to obtain stable AgNP+GNS films with intact, long lasting photothermal GNS were obtained. These require coating of GNS with a thiolated polyethylene glycol (PEG) terminated with a carboxylic acid function, acting as reticulant in the film formation. In the mixed AgNP+GNS films, the total noble metal content is w/w and in the Ag films < 0.025% w/w. The slow but prolonged Ag+ release from film-embedded AgNP (8–11% of total Ag released after 24 h, in the mixed films) results in a very strong microbicidal effect against planktonic Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacterial strains (the release of Au from films is instead negligible). Beside this intrinsic effect, the mixed films also exert an on-demand, fast hyperthermal bactericidal action, switched on by NIR laser irradiation (800 nm, i.e., inside the biotransparent window) of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption bands of GNS. Temperature increases of 30 °C are obtained using irradiances as low as 0.27 W/cm2. Moreover, 80–90% death on both strains was observed in bacteria in contact with the GNS-containing films, after 30 min of irradiation. Finally, the biocompatibility of all films was verified on human fibroblasts, finding negligible viability decrease in all cases.

Inkjet printing of spherical gold nanoparticles is widely applied in the fabrication of analytical and diagnostics tools. These methods could be extended to non-spherical gold nanoparticles that can efficiently release heat locally when irradiated in the near infrared (NIR) wavelength region, due to localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). However, this promising application requires the ability to maintain high efficiency and tunability of the NIR LSPR of the printed nanoparticles. In this study stable inks containing PEGylated gold nanostars (GNS) were fabricated and successfully inkjet-printed onto differently coated paper substrates with different porosity and permeability. A pronounced photothermal effect was observed under NIR excitation of LSPR of the printed GNS patterns even at low laser intensities. It was found that beside the direct role of the laser intensity, this effect depends appreciably on the printing parameters, such as drop density (δ, drops/mm2) and number of printed layers, and, critically, on the permeability of the coated paper substrates. These results will promote the development of GNS-based printed platforms for local photothermal therapy.

In 2017 the World Health Organization (WHO) announced a list of the 12 multidrug-resistant (MDR) families of bacteria that pose the greatest threat to human health, and recommended that new measures should be taken to promote the development of new therapies against these superbugs. Few antibiotics have been developed in the last two decades. Part of this slow progression can be attributed to the surge in the resistance acquired by bacteria, which is holding back pharma companies from taking the risk to invest in new antibiotic entities. With limited antibiotic options and an escalating bacterial resistance there is an urgent need to explore alternative ways of meeting this global challenge. The field of medical nanotechnology has emerged as an innovative and a powerful tool for treating some of the most complicated health conditions. Different inorganic nanomaterials including gold, silver, and others have showed potential antibacterial efficacies. Interestingly, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have gained specific attention, due to their biocompatibility, ease of surface functionalization, and their optical properties. In this review, we will focus on the latest research, done in the field of antibacterial gold nanoparticles; by discussing the mechanisms of action, antibacterial efficacies, and future implementations of these innovative antibacterial systems.

Silver nanoparticles were produced with AgF as the starting Ag(I) salt, with pectin as the reductant and protecting agent. While the obtained nanoparticles (pAgNP-F) have the same dimensional and physicochemical properties as those already described by us and obtained from AgNO3 and pectin (pAgNP-N), the silver nanoparticles from AgF display an increased antibacterial activity against E. coli PHL628 and Staphylococcus epidermidis RP62A (S. epidermidis RP62A), both as planktonic strains and as their biofilms with respect to pAgNP-N. In particular, a comparison of the antimicrobial and antibiofilm action of pAgNP-F has been carried out with pAgNP-N, pAgNP-N and added NaF, pure AgNO3, pure AgF, AgNO3 and added NaF and pure NaNO3 and NaF salts. By also measuring the concentration of the Ag+ cation released by pAgNP-F and pAgNP-N, we were able to unravel the separate contributions of each potential antibacterial agent, observing an evident synergy between p-AgNP and the F− anion: the F− anion increases the antibacterial power of the p-AgNP solutions even when F− is just 10 µM, a concentration at which F− alone (i.e., as its Na+ salt) is completely ineffective.

When using gold nanoparticle (AuNP) inks for writing photothermal readable secure information, it is of utmost importance to obtain a sharp and stable shape of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption bands in the prints. The T increase at a given irradiation wavelength (ΔTλ) is the retrieved information when printed patterns are interrogated with a laser source. As ΔTλ is proportional to the absorbance at the wavelength λ, any enlargement or change of the absorbance peak shape in a printed pattern would lead to wrong or unreliable reading. With the aim of preparing AuNP inks suitable for inkjet printing of patterns with stable and reliable photothermal reading, we prepared liquid solutions of spherical AuNP coated with a series of different polymers and with or without additional dispersant. The optical stability of the inks and of the printed patterns were checked by monitoring the shape changes of the sharp LSPR absorption band of AuNP in the visible (λmax 519 nm) along weeks of ageing. AuNP coated with neutral polyethylenglycol thiols (HS-PEG) of mw 2000–20000 showed a strong tendency to rapidly agglomerate in the dry prints. The close contact between agglomerated AuNP resulted in the loss of the pristine shape of the LSPR band, that flattened and enlarged with the further appearance of a second maximum in the Near IR, due to plasmon hybridization. The tendency to agglomerate was found directly proportional to the PEG mw. Addition of the ethylcellulose (EC) dispersant to inks resulted in an even stronger and faster tendency to LSPR peak shape deformation in the prints due to EC hydrophobicity, that induced AuNP segregation and promoted agglomeration. The introduction of a charge on the AuNP coating revelead to be the correct way to avoid agglomeration and obtain printed patterns with a sharp LSPR absorption band, stable with ageing. While the use of a simple PEG thiol with a terminal negative charge, HS-PEGCOO(−) (mw 3000), was not sufficient, overcoating with the positively charged polyallylamine hydrochloride (PAH) and further overcoating with the negatively charged polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) yielded AuNP@HS-PEGCOO(−)/PAH(+) and AuNP@HS-PEGCOO(−)/PAH(+)/PSS(−), both giving stable prints. With these inks we have shown that it is possible to write photothermally readable secure information. In particular, the generation of reliable three-wavelength photothemal barcodes has been demonstrated.

Currently there is a strong demand for novel protective materials with efficient antibacterial properties. Nanocomposite materials loaded with photo-thermally active nanoparticles can offer promising opportunities due to the local increase of temperature upon near-infrared (NIR) light exposure capable of eradicating bacteria. In this work, we fabricated antibacterial films obtained by spraying on glass slides aqueous solutions of polymers, containing highly photo-thermally active gold nanostars (GNS) or Prussian Blue (PB) nanoparticles. Under NIR light irradiation with low intensities (0.35 W/cm2) these films demonstrated a pronounced photo-thermal effect: ΔTmax up to 26.4 °C for the GNS-containing films and ΔTmax up to 45.8 °C for the PB-containing films. In the latter case, such a local temperature increase demonstrated a remarkable effect on a Gram-negative strain (P. aeruginosa) killing (84% of dead bacteria), and a promising effect on a Gram-positive strain (S. aureus) eradication (69% of dead bacteria). The fabricated films are promising prototypes for further development of lightweight surfaces with efficient antibacterial action that can be remotely activated on demand.

We developed an easy and reproducible synthetic method to graft a monolayer of copper sulfide nanoparticles (CuS NP) on glass and exploited their particular antibacterial features. Samples were fully characterized showing a good stability, a neat photo-thermal effect when irradiated in the Near InfraRed (NIR) region (in the so called “biological window”), and the ability to release controlled quantities of copper in water. The desired antibacterial activity is thus based on two different mechanisms: (i) slow and sustained copper release from CuS NP-glass samples, (ii) local temperature increase caused by a photo-thermal effect under NIR laser irradiation of CuS NP−glass samples. This behavior allows promising in vivo applications to be foreseen, ensuring a “static” antibacterial protection tailored to fight bacterial adhesion in the critical timescale of possible infection and biofilm formation. This can be reinforced, when needed, by a photo-thermal action switchable on demand by an NIR light.

The adhesion and proliferation of bacteria on abiotic surfaces pose challenges in both health care and industrial applications. Gold nanostars (GNSs) monolayers grafted on glass have demonstrated to exert antibacterial action due to their photo-thermal features. Here, these GNS layers were further functionalized using thiols monolayers, in order to impart different wettability to the surfaces and thus adding a feature that could help to fight bacterial proliferation. Thiol that has different functional groups was used and the thiol-protected surfaces were characterized by means of UV-vis spectroscopy, contact angles, SEM and surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). We verified that (i) coating with the proper thiol allows us to impart high hydrophilicity or hydrophobicity to the surfaces (with contact angle values ranging from 10 to 120°); (ii) GNS monolayers are strongly stabilized by functionalization with thiols, with shelf stability increasing from a few weeks to more than three months and (iii) photo-thermal features and subsequent antibacterial effects caused by hyperthermia are not changed by thiols layers, allowing us to kill at least 99.99% of representative bacterial strains.

In this paper a refractive index sensor based on localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in a Plastic Optical Fiber (POF), is presented and experimentally tested. LSPR is achieved exploiting five-branched gold nanostars (GNS) obtained using Triton X-100 in a seed-growth synthesis. They have the uncommon feature of three localized surface plasmon resonances. The strongest LSPRs fall in two ranges, one in the 600–900 nm range (LSPR 2) and the other one in the 1,100–1,600 nm range (LSPR 3), both sensible to refractive index changes. Anyway, due to the extremely strong attenuation (>102 dB/m) of the employed POF in the 1,100–1,600 nm range, only LSPR 2 will be exploited for refractive index change measurements, useful for bio-chemical sensing applications, as a proof of principle of the possibility of realizing a compact, low cost and easy-to-use GNS based device.

Prussian blue (PB) is a coordination polymer studied since the early 18th century, historically known as a pigment. PB can be prepared in colloidal form with a straightforward synthesis. It has a strong charge-transfer absorption centered at ~700 nm, with a large tail in the Near-IR range. Irradiation of this band results in thermal relaxation and can be exploited to generate a local hyperthermia by irradiating in the so-called bio-transparent Near-IR window. PB nanoparticles are fully biocompatible (PB has already been approved by FDA) and biodegradable, this making them ideal candidates for in vivo use. While papers based on the imaging, drug-delivery and absorbing properties of PB nanoparticles have appeared and have been reviewed in the past decades, a very recent interest is flourishing with the use of PB nanoparticles as photothermal agents in biomedical applications. This review summarizes the syntheses and the optical features of PB nanoparticles in relation to their photothermal use and describes the state of the art of PB nanoparticles as photothermal agents, also in combination with diagnostic techniques.

A layer of silver nanoplates, specifically synthesized with the desired localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) features, was grafted on amino-functionalized bulk glass surfaces to impart a double antibacterial action: (i) the well-known, long-term antibacterial effect based on the release of Ag+; (ii) an “on demand” action which can be switched on by the use of photo-thermal properties of silver nano-objects. Irradiation of these samples with a laser having a wavelength falling into the so called “therapeutic window” of the near infrared region allows the reinforcement, in the timescale of minutes, of the classical antibacterial effect of silver nanoparticles. We demonstrate how using the two actions allows for almost complete elimination of the population of two bacterial strains of representative Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
