Parents of 22 adolescents diagnosed as learning disabled (LD) five years before, and parents of 22 nondisabled (ND) adolescents rated their children on 30 bipolar adjectives. Results showed that the LD adolescents were rated more negatively than ND adolescents in areas of self-satisfaction, delinquency, flexibility, sociability, and social skills. (Authors)

Compared 51 seventh-graders considered at-risk for school failure with 51 classmates. Students with a history of school failure, although of normal intelligence, were found to be significantly less intellectually, academically, and affectively competent than their more successful peers and were rated by their teachers as significantly less able to deal adaptively with normal school stress. The usefulness of the Myklebust Pupil Rating Scale (PRS) in diagnosing learning disabilities was studied in 516 third- and fourth-grade school children. It was concluded that the PRS is stable across populations and over time, and that no single subscale was sufficient to predict the total score. (PHR)

Males were randomly assigned to one of three alcohol conditions: high dose, placebo, and nodose. Analysis indicated differential effect of alcohol and placebo with no change of depressive affect in the two high-dose alcohol groups, but an increase in placebo subjects. (Author)

Results indicated that geographic mobility was independent of psychological adjustment, and none of the personality scales was associated differentially with adjustment in mobile populations. The hypothesis of increased adjustment problems with increased mobility was not supported. (Author)

Investigated the efficacy of teaching students at-risk for academic failure to deal with school-related stress. High school students were assigned to a coping skills training group, a counselor intervention group, or a control group. The students given coping skills training showed significantly improved social problem-solving ability. (Author)

Investigated teachers' ability to identify students at-risk for failure. Found correlations between teachers' ratings and standard measures of intelligence and ability of 337 sixth graders were highly significant and predictive of high school grades. At-risk students were significantly less academically able, more anxious and had lower self-concepts. (Author/JAC)

Immediate recall measures on one or both types of stimuli were recorded under two conditions: (1) in which stimuli were close together and (2) in which they were separate. Results indicated that normal children selectively attended significantly better than LD children under Condition 1 but not in Condition 2, in which both groups were equal. (Author/PHR)

The history, job description, funding base, and effectiveness of modulators (advocate type individuals who provide direct services to learning disabled (LD) children as well as coordinate services by others) are reviewed. (CL)

Results show teacher ratings and achievement score changes for all groups with the modulation group superior only in teacher ratings of Personal-Social behavior. Usefulness of this form of intervention in meeting the child's needs and in treating the concomitants of school failure are discussed. (Author)

Administered a complex reaction time task to 47 learning-disabled and 41 control children. The preparatory interval between a warning and act light was manipulated for length and regularity. Results indicated that the inability to sustain attention over time, rather than momentary inattentiveness, distinguished the two groups. (Author)

Findings indicate minimal differences, on diagnostic tests, between children who exhibited torque and those who did not. Torque is defined as the circling of any X in a clockwise direction. Torque is not associated with learning problems in school. Diagnostic utility of torque should be carefully considered. (Author)

It was found that although learning disabled elementary children did more poorly than normal children at tasks involving intersensory and intrasensory matches, the psychological processes related to performance were, with one exception, similar between groups. (Author/CL)
