The use of transmit beamforming in a radio-frequency wireless power transfer (WPT) system can improve the energy transmission efficiency by concentrating the transmit power in the angle of departure (AoD). Optimal beamforming requires information regarding the AoD or the channel between the transmitter and receiver. A previously proposed WPT system continually estimates the optimal AoD using custom-designed pilot signals, which are known as beam-steered pilot signals and are transmitted periodically at every frame. Herein, we propose a spatio–temporal interpolation technique to improve the accuracy of beam tracking for such a WPT system. Specifically, thin-plate spline interpolation is adopted in the space domain to overcome the limited angular resolution of the beam-steered pilot signals in a three-dimensional channel. In the time domain, polynomial interpolation is performed to track the changing AoD during consecutive frames. Numerical results show that the proposed technique can improve the WPT efficiency as well as the mean square error performance of the beamforming weight vector.

The pilot scheme currently used in 5th generation (5G) cellular networks assigns the same set of orthogonal pilot signals to all cells. This results in inter-cell interference, also known as pilot contamination, which can significantly degrade performance, especially in massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems. To mitigate this interference, we propose a novel Dual Pilot Scheme (DPS) that assigns a slightly modified set of nearly-orthogonal pilot signals. DPS is a general scheme that can be implemented in any wireless communication system, including 5G and beyond. We demonstrate the integration of DPS in a massive MIMO system in both microscopic and macroscopic levels and analytically prove that DPS enables more accurate estimates of the channel state information in the minimum mean-squared error sense, under the independent identically distributed (i.i.d.) and the correlated Rayleigh fading wireless communication channel models. We further validate and demonstrate the advantages of DPS over various channel models of massive MIMO 5G technology by extensive simulations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effect of channel estimation error on bit error probability of uncoded and coded sparse code multiple access (SCMA) system in uplink channel with block fading is considered. SCMA is a variety of non-orthogonal multiple access based on code division. The variance of channel estimation error is investigated for channel estimation based on non-orthogonal pilot signals. The results obtained by computer simulation show that required accuracy of the channel estimation depends on the code block length. These results are compared with Cramer-Rao bound.

Pilot signal reuse in neighboring cells causes the pilot contamination, and performance will be degraded significantly in a multicell, massive multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) uplink system. In this letter, a new decoding method is proposed to alleviate the degradation. In the proposed method, the principal component analysis (PCA) is used to reduce the dimension of the received signals from both intercell and intracell. Then, the complex independent component analysis (ICA) is implemented to estimate the channels, and the mean minimum square error (MMSE) decoder is employed to decode the transmitted signals. At last, few pilot signals are used to overcome the ambiguity caused by the complex ICA. In our method, orthogonality or asymptotic orthogonality of the channels is not required. Moreover, the path-loss and shadowing factors can be unknown. Simulation results show that the performance of our decoder is better than the MMSE channel estimation-based MMSE decoder. Moreover, error floor does not appear even when signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is high, while it occurs if the MMSE decoder is used. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Current cellular technologies are based on the concept of coherent communication, in which the channel matrix used for demodulation is estimated via reference or pilot signals. Coherent systems, however, involve a significant increase of the signalling overhead, especially when the number of transmission points is increased or when the mobile channel changes rapidly, which motivates the use of non-coherent techniques. This letter extends the use of non-coherent communications to a multi-user (MU) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) framework by combining superposition coding with a reduced-complexity detection method. Numerical results confirm that our scheme achieves higher user rates than non-coherent MU transmission based on time multiplexing. In addition to the well-known sum-rate gain of MU systems, an extra performance gain given by downlink non-coherent MU communication is shown and qualitatively justified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper investigates the detection of pilot signals by different types of the receivers in the wireless sensor network. It is commonly known, that receiver frame statistics calculation is based on integration of impulses into all frames. It is assumed that receiver output signal is in tight synchronization with its energy concentration. The receiver output signal is represented as impulse with various noise distributions and/or modulation types. The results of this research are applicable only for particular signal type (single impulse type) and its detection method. The analytic formulas of pilot signal detection and comparator threshold have been also analysed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This paper considers a millimeter-wave communication system and proposes an efficient channel estimation scheme with a minimum number of pilots. We model the dynamics of the channel’s second-order statistics by a Markov process and develop a learning framework to obtain these dynamics from an unlabeled set of measured angles of arrival and departure. We then find the optimal precoding and combining vectors for pilot signals. Using these vectors, the transmitter and receiver will sequentially estimate the corresponding angles of departure and arrival, and then refine the pilot precoding and combining vectors to minimize the error of estimating the channel gains., QC 20190507

Slijedi multipleksiranje i formiranje prijenosnog toka. Dodatno, DVB-C2 koristi zaštitne intervale i pilotske signale. Digital cable system is defined as a functional block of equipment which performs the adaptation of band television signals to the characteristics of the cable channels. Each input video signal passes through the source coding in order to reduce the data rate. The next step is forming and multiplexing of transport stream. Channel coding ensures error protection. Modulation changes the parameters of the radio frequency carrier in response to changing signals occurring channel coding. The main differences between the systems DVB-C and DVB-C2 are the types of modulation, forward error correction and interleaving. In addition, DVB-C2 uses guard intervals and pilots. In the simulation model, by comparing the ratio of the LDPC code, a code that has a lower level of protection requires greater value C/N ratio to receive data without errors. This is true for all examined modulation procedures. More complex modulation procedures require higher values of C/N to transfer virtually without errors.

This work seeks to design a pilot signal, under a power constraint, such that the channel can be estimated with minimum mean square error. The procedure we derive does not assume Kronecker structure on the underlying covariance matrices, and the pilot signal is obtained in three main steps. Firstly, we solve a relaxed convex version of the original minimization problem. Secondly, its solution is projected onto the feasible set. Thirdly we use the projected solution as starting point for an augmented Lagrangian method. Numerical experiments indicate that this procedure may produce pilot signals that are far better than those obtained under the Kronecker structure assumption. QC 20140120

In a wireless sensor network with relaying capability, intermediate relay nodes are with limited energy budget. To maximize lifetime of relay nodes, selective relay strategies, requiring full channel state information (CSI), are used to utilizes the best relaying channel. Pilot overhead on relay nodes lifetime is reduced by assuming pilot transmission from destination instead of relay nodes. This is only valid if channel reciprocity is assumed. It is evident that channel reciprocity is not valid for low cost simple transceivers, such as sensor node transceivers. In this paper a novel sequential random (SR) selective cooperative relay strategy is proposed in amplify and forward (AF) relay networks for applications with non reciprocal links. The outage probability of SR strategy is derived and its average lifetime, average number of pilot signals per transmitted message, and average transmit energy per message are simulated. SR strategy uses less number of pilots than selective cooperative relay strategies (S-CRSs). A dynamic transmit power threshold is adopted for the proposed SR strategy to improve its performances. In contrast to S-CRSs, in which each relay knows its CSI to the destination before every transmission, SR acquires CSI on the need-to-know basis and significantly outperforms the lifetime of S-CRSs for large number of relays and relatively good channel conditions. The proposed SR selects relay nodes in a distributed manner which makes it suitable for heterogeneous ad-hoc sensor networks in which some relays have processing capabilities and less restricted energy supply, i.e. these relays can act as the intermediate destinations. An accurate ultrasonic range finder employing Sliding Discrete Fourier Transform (SDFT) based restructured phase-locked loop (RPLL), which is an improved version of the recently proposed integrated phase-locking scheme (IPLL), has been expounded. This range finder principally utilizes amplitude-modulated ultrasonic waves assisted by an infrared (IR) pilot signal. The phase shift between the envelope of the reference IR pilot signal and that of the received ultrasonic signal is proportional to the range. The extracted envelopes are filtered by SDFT without introducing any additional phase shift. A new RPLL is described in which the phase error is driven to zero using the quadrature signal derived from the SDFT. Further, the quadrature signal is reinforced by another cosine signal derived from a lookup table (LUT). The pulse frequency of the numerically controlled oscillator (NCO) is extremely accurate, enabling fine tuning of the SDFT and RPLL also improves the lock time for the 50Hz input signal to 0.04s. The percentage phase error for the range 0.6m to 6m is about 0.2. The VHDL codes generated for the various signal processing steps were downloaded into a Cyclone FPGA chip around which the ultrasonic ranger had been built. 2010 P. Sumathi and P. A. Janakiraman.

This paper proposes a spatial filtering technique for the reception of pilot-aided multirate multicode direct-sequence code division multiple access (DS/CDMA) systems such as wideband CDMA (WCDMA). These systems introduce a code-multiplexed pilot sequence that can be used for the estimation of the filter weights, but the presence of the traffic signal (transmitted at the same time as the pilot sequence) corrupts that estimation and degrades the performance of the filter significantly. This is caused by the fact that although the traffic and pilot signals are usually designed to be orthogonal, the frequency selectivity of the channel degrades this orthogonality at hte receiving end. Here, we propose a semi-blind technique that eliminates the self-noise caused by the code-multiplexing of the pilot. We derive analytically the asymptotic performance of both the training-only and the semi-blind techniques and compare them with the actual simulated performance. It is shown, both analytically and via simulation, that high gains can be achieved with respect to training-onlybased techniques.

Main attention is paid to matched filtering as a method achieving high processing gain in a short time. The impact of main parameters on the result of the detection is shown in this work. By analysing the output of detector not only in ideal conditions, but also in real transmission system, the most realibly detectable sequences were identified. Further the possibilities of spectrum sensing by matched filter in OFDM based systems are presented.
