1. Küreselleşmenin Kültür Üzerine Etkisi

Abstract

Kitle iletişim araçlarında ve daha birçok alanda yaşanan gelişmeler nedeniyle küreselleşen dünyada, insanlar ve toplumlar birbirlerini artık daha fazla etkilemektedir. Özellikle küreselleşme sonucu küresel bir kültür oluşacağı savı üzerine yoğun tartışmalar söz konusudur. Küresel kültürün ise küreselleşmenin itici ülkelerinin kültürü olduğu kabul edilmektedir. Bu çalışmada amaçlanan küresel kültürün, diğer kültürleri etkilemesi sonucu homojen bir kültür tipine mi yoksa heterojen bir kültür tipine mi neden olduğunun araştırılmasıdır. Çalışmada öncelikle küreselleşmenin nasıl bir kültür tipini yaratacağına dair tartışmalara yer verilmiştir. Bu tartışmalarda araştırmacıların bazıları, küreselleşme sonucu homojen bir kültür oluşacağını iddia etmektedir. Diğer araştırmacılar ise küreselleşmenin homojenleşme yaratacağı fikrinin küreselleşmeyi tek boyutlu ele almak anlamına geleceğini savunmaktadır. Küreselleşmenin kültürel çeşitlilik yaratacağını savunan araştırmacılar; küyerel, melezleşme, kümelenme ya da bölgeselleşme gibi kavramları ön plana atmışlardır. Bu araştırmacıların ortak özelliği ise küreselleşmenin karmaşık bir yapısı olduğunu ve bu karmaşıklığın homojenleşmeden ziyade farklı kültür tiplerini ortaya çıkaracağını savunmalarıdır. Bu çerçevede 2020 yılında İzmir özelinde saha araştırılması yapılmıştır. Araştırmada kozmopolitlik, etnik kimlik ölçekleri kullanılmıştır. Ayrıca araştırmada demografik bilgi içeren sorular yer almıştır. Araştırmaya 406 kişi katılmıştır. Yapılan analiz sonucunda araştırmaya katılan kişilerin küyerel, yerel ve uluslar ötesi olmak üzere üç farklı kültür tipine ait kümede yoğunlaştığı görülmüştür. Küreselleşmenin homojen bir kültür yerine, içinde kültürel çeşitliliği barındıran bir yapıya neden olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.

Abstract

Social thermoregulation theory posits that modern human relationships are pleisiomorphically organized around body temperature regulation. In two studies (N = 1755) designed to test the principles from this theory, we used supervised machine learning to identify social and non-social factors that relate to core body temperature. This data-driven analysis found that complex social integration (CSI), defined as the number of high-contact roles one engages in, is a critical predictor of core body temperature. We further used a cross-validation approach to show that colder climates relate to higher levels of CSI, which in turn relates to higher CBT (when climates get colder). These results suggest that despite modern affordances for regulating body temperature, people still rely on social warmth to buffer their bodies against the cold.

5. Meaning in life, psychological hardiness and death anxiety: individuals with or without generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)

Abstract

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a widespread psychiatric disorder. According to the transdiagnostic approach, death anxiety can underpin predominantly somatic manifestations of GAD. Personal resilience factors such as a sense of a meaningful life, and psychological hardiness, which can protect people from developing clinical symptoms, may be lower in individuals with GAD. So far, there has been no study examining the role of meaning in life dimensions, death anxiety, and hardiness in individuals with GAD in Turkey. Thus, we aimed to investigate to what extent the GAD sample differs from the non-anxious control group in terms of death anxiety, meaning in life dimensions, and hardiness. Secondly, we examined how conceptually predicted death anxiety by meaning in life dimensions and hardiness regardless of diagnosis, age, and gender. Just before the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, we could only recruit 38 individuals with GAD and 31 non-anxious control subjects. The Death Anxiety Scale, The Meaning in Life Questionnaire and the Psychological Hardiness Scale were administered to all the participants. The one-way MANOVA results with Bonferroni adjustment revealed that individuals with GAD significantly differed from the control group in every way. Hierarchical regression analysis displayed that the presence of meaning made the most significant contribution in predicting death anxiety. In conclusion, existential issues such as death anxiety, hardiness, and meaningful life can be emphasized for the treatment of GAD, and the presence of meaning is the most crucial antidote to avoid death anxiety in all individuals.

Abstract

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common disorder that affects individuals throughout life, although generally diagnosed during the school years. Multimodal perspectives are recommended during treatment. A variety of non-pharmacological interventions, including psychoeducational approaches, are widely available particularly for clients who refuse to use or are resistant to medication, although the real effect sizes remain uncertain. The effect of music therapy as a complement to ADHD treatment has emerged especially in the last 20 years with neuroimaging studies. Recent research has indicated that music experience influences reward, emotion, motivation and pleasure, stress and the immune system, and social relationships, as well as cognitive skills. Listening to filtered music also influences auditory functions. Sound or listening therapy originated from the Tomatis audio-psycho-phonological (APP) method aims to train the vestibular system auditory functions that are assumed to be connected with both top-down (higher brain structures) and bottom-up (peripheral to central) brain functioning and the peripheral nervous system. In this case report, we discuss the probable impact of listening or sound therapy in the management of ADHD symptoms, particularly in terms of sustained attention, reaction time, and inhibitory control (impulsivity/hyperactivity) measured by a distracted continuous performance test (CPT) and learning and behavioral problems assessed by rating scales. Three adolescents (aged 14, 15, and 17 years) in Turkey with ADHD-combined presentation diagnosed by a psychiatrist were given 30 sessions (totaling 60 h) of the sound program with an auditory stimulation device developed by an APP method. The participants were assessed before and after the program and their scores compared using the CPT (MOXO d-CPT), Conners Rating Scales for Parents (CPRS) and Teachers (CTRS), and Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS) based on the ages of the participants, in addition to the listening checklist. Although the differences in the scores did not represent any statistical significance, the findings could still be noteworthy indicators of future prospective studies for the exact role of these non-pharmacological supportive interventions.

Abstract

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has increased negative emotions and decreased positive emotions globally. Left unchecked, these emotional changes might have a wide array of adverse impacts. To reduce negative emotions and increase positive emotions, we tested the effectiveness of reappraisal, an emotion-regulation strategy that modifies how one thinks about a situation. Participants from 87 countries and regions (n = 21,644) were randomly assigned to one of two brief reappraisal interventions (reconstrual or repurposing) or one of two control conditions (active or passive). Results revealed that both reappraisal interventions (vesus both control conditions) consistently reduced negative emotions and increased positive emotions across different measures. Abstract

For the last 30 years, the conceptualization studies of posttraumatic growth (PTG) which refer to the positive changes as a result of the struggle with adverse events, have been continuously evolving with new findings. In line with this empirical evidence, Tedeschi and colleagues have proposed a revised model in which PTG is accepted both as a process and an outcome. The roles of the concepts such as wisdom, resilience, socio-cultural factors are explained better. As the ultimate aim of the model, the authors suggest reaching the dimensions of PTG not hedonistic happiness or well-being. This new model include, gaining the wisdom that comes with the existing stress, possessing the newly achieved problem-solving repertoire, and also re-structuring new-life narratives, meaning of life and flexible schemas. Furthermore, the latest research has provided us the evidence that, in the process of PTG, paradoxically both positive (PTG) and negative changes (Posttraumatic Depreciaton) are experienced together. But even though the difference is small, positive changes are consistently found to be greater. The aim of this paper is to describe the revised model with the latest empirical findings and provide a literature review with implications for clinical practice.

Abstract

Background: Internalized stigma, adoption of negative attitudes and stereotypes of the society regarding persons' illness, has not been studied previously in pediatric psoriasis patients. Objective: We aimed to investigate the internalized stigma in pediatric psoriasis patients and to determine differences according to factors affecting internalized stigma compared to adult psoriasis patients. Methods: This multicenter, cross-sectional, comparative study included 125 pediatric (55 female, 70 male; mean age±standard deviation [SD], 14.59±2.87 years) and 1,235 adult psoriasis patients (577 female, 658 male; mean age±SD, 43.3±13.7 years). Psoriasis Internalized Stigma Scale (PISS), Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), Perceived Health Status (PHS), and the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ)-12 were the scales used in the study. Results: The mean PISS was 58.48±14.9 in pediatric group. When PISS subscales of groups were compared, the pediatric group had significantly higher stigma resistance (p=0.01) whereas adult group had higher scores of alienation (p=0.01) and stereotype endorsement (p=0.04). There was a strong correlation between mean values of PISS and DLQI (r=0.423, p=0.001). High internalized stigma scores had no relation to either the severity or localization of disease in pediatric group. However, poor PHS (p=0.007) and low-income levels (p=0.03) in both groups, and body mass index (r=0.181, p=0.04) in the pediatric group were related to high PISS scores. Conclusion: Internalized stigma in pediatric patients is as high as adults and is related to poor quality of life, general health, and psychological illnesses. Unlike adults, internalized stigma was mainly determined by psoriasis per se, rather than disease severity or involvement of visible body parts, genitalia or folds. Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has increased negative emotions and decreased positive emotions globally. Left unchecked, these emotional changes might have a wide array of adverse impacts. To reduce negative emotions and increase positive emotions, we tested the effectiveness of reappraisal, an emotion regulation strategy which modifies how one thinks about a situation. Participants from 87 countries/regions (N = 21,644) were randomly assigned to one of two brief reappraisal interventions (reconstrual or repurposing) or one of two control conditions (active or passive). Results revealed that both reappraisal interventions (vs. both control conditions) had consistent effects in reducing negative emotions and increasing positive emotions across different measures. Reconstrual and repurposing had similar effects. Importantly, planned exploratory analyses indicated that reappraisal interventions did not reduce intentions to practice preventive health behaviours. The findings demonstrate the viability of creating scalable, low-cost interventions for use around the world to build resilience during the pandemic and beyond.

Abstract

How people deal with humor and laughter is culturally constructed within a society but each member may differ in their attitudes. Depending upon this, this study aimed to test the factor structure of PhoPhiKat-45 (Ruch and Proyer Humor: International Journal of Humor Research, 22, 183–212, 2009a) which is a subjective measurement designed to assess three dispositions toward laughter and ridicule; gelotophobia (fear of being laughed at), gelotophilia (joy of being laughed at), and katagelasticism (joy of laughing at others), taking samples from two universities in Turkey (N = 628; female = 470). We further examined the relationships between humor styles, self-esteem, and psychological symptomatology with the PhoPhiKat-45. Confirmatory factor analyses replicated the original 3-factor model and internal consistencies of derived subscales were satisfactory (.76 for gelotophobia, .79 for gelotophilia, .66 for katagelasticism). For the nomological validity, bivariate correlations and regression analyses showed that gelotophobia was associated with low self-esteem, greater levels of psychological distress (mainly concerning interpersonal relations), and social and coping functions of humor. Gelotophilia was associated with all forms of humor, had no relation to self-esteem or any kind of psychological distress. Katagelasticism (i.e., enjoying laughing at others) was associated with all dimensions of psychological distress and only with an aggressive style of humor. In conclusion, the findings showed that the Turkish PhoPhiKat-43 scale has a satisfactory construct validity and reliability instrument to assess the dispositions toward laughter and ridicule. © 2017 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC

Abstract

In the Human Penguin Project (N = 1755), 15 research groups from 12 countries collected body temperature, demographic variables, social network indices, seven widely-used psychological scales and two newly developed questionnaires (the Social Thermoregulation and Risk Avoidance Questionnaire (STRAQ-1) and the Kama Muta Frequency Scale (KAMF)). They were collected to investigate the relationship between environmental factors (e.g., geographical, climate etc.) and human behaviors, which is a long-standing inquiry in the scientific community. More specifically, the present project was designed to test principles surrounding the idea of social thermoregulation, which posits that social networks help people to regulate their core body temperature. The results showed that all scales in the current project have sufficient to good psychometrical properties. Abstract

In the wake of significant adversity, a range of recovery outcomes are possible, from prolonged distress to minimal effects on functioning and even psychological growth. Finding meaning in one's life is thought to facilitate optimal recovery from such adversity. Research on psychological growth and recovery often focuses on the daily hassles or significant traumas of convenience samples or on people's psychological recovery from medical illness. A small body of research is developing to test theories of growth among survivors of natural disasters. The present study of 57 survivors of the 2013 Colorado floods tested the incremental relations between posttraumatic growth (PTG) and dimensions of meaning in life, vitality, and perceived social support. The most consistent relations observed were among the one dimension of meaning-search for meaning-perceived social support, and PTG. Despite the limitations of this study, we conclude that search for meaning in life may be an important part of recovery from natural disasters, floods being one example.

Abstract

The present study aimed to find out the prevalence of traumatic experiences in students and the relationships among posttraumatic stress, meaningful life, and posttraumatic growth as well as to investigate the possible contributory roles of meaning in life dimensions and posttraumatic stress in posttraumatic growth. The instruments included, a series of questionnaires consisting of demographic information, Turkish versions of Posttraumatic Diagnostic Scale, Posttraumatic Growth Inventory, and the Meaning in Life Questionnaire which were carried out in Afyon Kocatepe University. Statistical analysis of 564 university students (376 female and 188 male) revealed that sudden death was the most distressing event (51.4%). The hierarchical multiple regression results revealed both meaning in life dimensions significantly and positively predicted the total growth scores and posttraumatic stress severity contributed a significant increase in explained variance. In conclusion, following adversities, posttraumatic stress and both meaning in life dimensions are separate routes to posttraumatic growth.

Abstract

WOS: 000408928500016, PubMed: 28407292, Internalized stigma is the adoption of negative attitudes and stereotypes of the society regarding a person's illness. It causes decreased self-esteem and life-satisfaction, increased depression and suicidality, and difficulty in coping with the illness. The primary aim of this study was to investigate the internalized stigma state of psoriatic patients and to identify the factors influencing internalized stigma. The secondary aim was to identify the correlation of internalized stigma with quality of life and perceived health status. This multicentre, cross-sectional study comprised 1485 patients. There was a significant positive correlation between mean values of Psoriasis Internalized Stigma Scale (PISS) and Psoriasis Area and Severity Index, Body Surface Area, Dermatological Life Quality Index and General Health Questionnaire-12 (P < 0.001 in all). Lower percieved health score (P = 0.001), early onset psoriasis (P = 0.016), family history of psoriasis (P = 0.0034), being illiterate (P < 0.001) and lower income level (P < 0.001) were determinants of high PISS scores. Mean PISS values were higher in erythrodermic and generalized pustular psoriasis. Involvement of scalp, face, hand, genitalia and finger nails as well as arthropathic and inverse psoriasis were also related to significantly higher PISS scores (P = 0.001). Our findings imply that psoriatic patients experience high levels of internalized stigma which are associated with psoriasis severity, involvement of visible body parts, genital area, folds or joints, poorer quality of life, negative perceptions of general health and psychological illnesses. Therefore, internalized stigma may be one of the major factors responsible from psychosocial burden of the disease.

Abstract

Objective: We aimed to investigate facial emotion recognition abilities in violent individuals with antisocial personality disorder who have comorbid attention deficient hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or not. Method: The photos of happy, surprised, fearful, sad, angry, disgust, and neutral facial expressions and Wender Utah Rating Scale have been performed in all groups. Results: The mean ages were as follows: in antisocial personality disorder with ADHD 22.0 ± 1.59, in pure antisocial individuals 21.90 ± 1.80 and in controls 22.97 ± 2.85 (p N 0.05). The mean score in Wender Utah Rating Scale was significantly different between groups (p b 0.001). The mean accurate responses to each facial emotion between groups were insignificant (p N 0.05) excluding disgust faces which was significantly impaired in ASPD + ADHD and pure ASPD groups. Antisocial individuals with attention deficient and hyperactivity had spent significantly more time to each facial emotion than healthy controls (p b 0.05) while pure antisocial individual had more time to recognize disgust and neutral faces than healthy controls (p b 0.05). Conclusion: Study of complex social cognitive abilities in adults with ADHD and violent behaviors is lacking. This study is the first, investigating the differences according to social cognition cues in violent individual that revealed no significance within pure antisocial individuals and antisocial individuals with ADHD.

Abstract

Objective: Skin disorders constitute an important problem in children living in developing countries. The aim of the study was to evaluate the prevalence of skin diseases in children aged 0–16 years. Materials and Methods: In the present study, data on a total of 12,206 children aged 0–16 years, admitted to the outpatient clinic of Dermatology Department, Mersin University School of Medicine, between 2001 and 2010 were analyzed. Results: Male/female ratio was 1.1/1. 44.2% of the patients were adolescents. The most common diseases were acne (12.4%), warts (10.5%), and atopic dermatitis (9.3%). Conclusion: Studies of the pediatric population, which constitutes the cornerstone of the community, can play an important role in determining the policies of protective medicine and public health.

Abstract

This study examined the basic properties of the Turkish version of the “Boredom Proneness Scale Short-Form” (BPS-SF; (Vodanovich, Wallace, & Kass, 2005). A packet of questionnaires were administered to 264 university students. The results of confirmatory factor analysis yielded two factors as it is in the original scale. However, the internal consistency coefficients for two subscales were quite low. The study seemed to indicate that Turkish version of BFS had acceptable level of psychometric qualities. Further studies may need with different samples to understand the problems involved in reliability issue.

25. The relationship between ABO blood groups and acne vulgaris

Abstract

Background and Aim: Studies of associations between various cancers and the ABO blood groups have shown elevated relative risks for some categories of disease. There has so far been no report of an evaluation of the relationship between the ABO blood groups and acne vulgaris. To investigate this association, we conducted a retrospective study of acne vulgaris diagnosed in Turkey. Material and Methods: All cases were clinically confirmed. Blood information was obtained on 498 individuals with acne vulgaris, and the distribution of ABO and Rh blood type for cases was compared with that of 419 healthy blood donors from the same geographic area. Results: Patients with group A and B blood groups ratios were higher than the control group, but not statistically significant (P = 0.325 and P = 0.138). The ratio of the patient group with AB blood group was significantly higher than in the control group (P < 0.01). The ratio of blood group O of patient group was significantly lower than in the control group (P < 0.01). There were no statistically significant differences between the patient and control groups in the distribution of Rh factor. Conclusion: Our study showed a significant association of AB and O blood groups with acne vulgaris. Further studies in a larger series on blood group antigens are needed to shed some light on the relationship between these antigens and skin cancer.
