Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participation has been demonstrated to improve household food insecurity, yet not all those who are eligible for the program participate. This article describes findings from both peer-reviewed and grey literature pertaining to factors that influence SNAP participation. SNAP participation has demonstrated benefits for low-income individuals and families for improving dietary intake, reducing food insecurity, and ultimately providing one strategy to alleviate poverty. The findings are described with a social science and behavioral lens in order to glean public health implications and recommendations from a broad array of literature. Factors influencing SNAP participation across the social–ecological model are discussed. Macro- and microlevel recommendations are made and actions applicable in targeted outreach, program, and organizational strategies are recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract Background The reach and representativeness are seldom examined in worksite weight loss studies. This paper describes and illustrates a method for directly assessing the reach and representativeness of a internet-based worksite weight loss program. Methods A brief health survey (BHS) was administered, between January 2008 and November 2009, to employees at 19 worksites in Southwest Virginia. The BHS included demographic, behavioral, and health questions. All employees were blinded to the existence of a future weight loss program until the completion of the BHS. Results The BHS has a participation rate of 66 percent and the subsequent weight loss program has a participation rate of 30 percent. Employees from higher income households, with higher education levels and health literacy proficiency were significantly more likely to participate in the program (p's < .01). Conclusions Worksite weight loss programs should include targeted marketing strategies to engage employees with lower income, education, and health literacy.

Background: Over the past twenty years, the post-cancer rehabilitation has been developed, usually in a hospital setting. Although this allows better care organization and improved security, it is perceived as stressful and restrictive by the "cancer survivor". Therefore, the transfer of benefits to everyday life is more difficult, or even uncertain. Staying in a thermal resort seemed to offer a good compromise: the security and structure of centralized reception in a thermal resort for treatment and medical supervision, and accommodation in a hotel with full dietary board. It combines institutional quality and security with the freedom of real life and the dynamics of a group formed under innovative conditions. This rehabilitation procedure was tested with the program PACThe (Program of Accompanying women after breast Cancer treatment completion in Thermal resorts) which was evaluated at one year in a randomized controlled trial involving 251 patients [1] and at five years in another study [2]. The results shown a significative improvement in many areas such as quality of life, functional abilities and sleep. The aim of this study is therefore to confirm the benefits of the PACThe program at six months for breast cancer women in complete remission in real-life conditions., Methods: The project PACThe Real-Life conditions is an observational trial in which 400 breast cancer women in complete remission will be sent to a 3 week thermal "post-cancer rehabilitation" program. Primary objective is to assess the quality of life until 12 months. The outcome will be measured with the self-questionnaire SF-36 [3] at five timepoints (inclusion visit, end of thermal resort, 6 months post-cure, 12 months post-cure and 18 months post-cure). The duration of patient participation in the study will therefore be 18 months. The main analysis will consist of comparing the SF-36 global score at 6 months with the baseline., Discussion: This study aims to investigate the improvements in quality of life of 3 weeks stay at thermal resort for breast cancer women in complete remission. Background: Most breast cancers are detected at an early stage in which case conservative surgery is indicated. An accurate preoperative localization technique is essential for conservative surgery of non-palpable breast lesions. Currently, the gold standard technique is wire localization (WL). However, this technique has well-known drawbacks. Several wire-free techniques have been developed to overcome these drawbacks; one technique is localisation by Radiofrequency Identification (RFID). The purpose of this clinical trial was to assess the superiority of RFID tags (HOLOGIC) in terms of patient satisfaction, over wire localization of non-palpable breast lesions., Methods: This was a single-centre, prospective, controlled and non-interventional trial. Patients were followed from their inclusion at the time of the preoperative consultation to the postoperative consultation, one month after surgery. Data on anxiety and satisfaction was collected from patients and clinicians using questionnaires, and clinical data was collected from the medical files. The primary outcome was the patients' satisfaction scores, assessed using a visual analogue scale., Results: Eighty patients were sequentially enrolled in two groups: the wire group (n = 40) and the RFID group (n = 40). One patient from the RFID group was excluded from the analysis because of a substantial migration during deployment. On a 10-point Visual Analogue Scale, the patients' median satisfaction score was 9.8 (IQR = 1.32) for the wire group and 10 (IQR = 0.07) for the RFID group (p < 0.001). A reduction in pain between device insertion and surgery was observed in the RFID group (p = 0.009). The median placement time was shorter in the RFID group (15 min, IQR = 6) than in the wire group (20 min, IQR = 30) (p = 0.01)., Conclusion: Our results show a statistically significant difference in median patient satisfaction score with the localization of non-palpable breast cancer lesions using RFID tags compared to the use of the WL. Objectives: To evaluate the prognostic factors and treatment outcomes in dogs with high-grade cutaneous mast cell tumors (HGMCTs)., Methods: Medical records of dogs with a histopathologic diagnosis of HGMCTs were reviewed from a single institution. Clinical factors, treatment-related variables, and adjuvant therapies were documented to evaluate their association with clinical outcomes. Comparative and survival analyses were conducted using Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, log-rank, and Fisher's exact tests., Results: The overall median survival time for the 77 dogs was 317 days (range 20-3,041 days) with 6-month, 1-year, and 2-year survival rates of 69, 50, and 30%, respectively. Surgically treated dogs had significantly prolonged survival and were 6.88 times more likely to survive beyond 5.5 months. The presence of metastasis at initial staging was strongly associated with poorer outcomes, as dogs without metastasis at initial staging had 6.94 times higher odds of surviving beyond 2 years. Surgical sites with incomplete margins had a higher local recurrence rate (58%) compared to those with clean margins (26%). Despite aggressive treatment, 75% of the dogs that received concurrent surgical and adjuvant therapy experienced disease progression. Lymph node extirpation, tumor localization, number of tumors, and local recurrence were not associated with the overall outcome., Clinical Relevance: The combination of aggressive local therapy and adjuvant systemic chemotherapy provides a notable survival benefit in dogs with HGMCTs. Stable flies, Stomoxys calcitrans (L.), are blood-feeding ectoparasites of cattle. Host-seeking stable flies respond to various cattle host cues, but a potential role of cattle breath gases [carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), methane (CH 4 )] and cattle breath volatiles (acetone, isoprene, 2-butanone, 2-propanol, propionic acid, 3-methyl butyric acid, phenol), alone or in combination, on host-seeking behavior of stable flies has not yet been comprehensively investigated. In laboratory and greenhouse experiments, we tested the hypotheses that (1) CO 2 and CH 4 interactively attract stable flies, (2) CO 2 'gates' attraction of stable flies to CH 4 , and (3) breath volatiles on their own, or in combination with both CO 2 and CH 4 , attract stable flies. In Y-tube olfactometer experiments, the blend of CH 4 (0.5%) and CO 2 (1%) in breathing air ('b-air') attracted significantly more female flies than CH 4 , or CO 2 , in b-air. The flies' responses to CH 4 were contingent upon their prior or concurrent exposure to CO 2 . In two-choice experiments in a large greenhouse compartment, significantly more flies landed on the host-look-alike barrel that disseminated a blend of CO 2 and CH 4 in b-air (CO 2 /CH 4 /b-air) than on the barrel disseminating either b-air or CO 2 . Moreover, significantly more flies landed on the barrel that disseminated synthetic breath volatiles (SBVs) than on the barrel disseminating b-air. The blend of CO 2 /CH 4 /b-air and SBVs elicited more fly landings on barrels than CO 2 /CH 4 /b-air but not than SBVs. SBVs, possibly combined with both CH 4 and CO 2 , could be developed as a lure to enhance trap captures of stable flies in livestock production facilities., (© 2024. Ticks spend most of their life inhabiting leaf litter and detritus where they are protected from sun but preyed upon by ants. Ants secrete chemical communication signals to coordinate group tasks such as nest defence. Ticks that avoid ant semiochemicals-as indicators of ant presence-would reduce predation risk by ants. We tested the hypotheses that: (i) chemical deposits from the thatching ant Formica oreas deter blacklegged ticks, Ixodes scapularis , (ii) deterrent semiochemicals originate from the ants' poison and/or Dufour's gland(s), and (iii) tick-deterrent semiochemicals serve as alarm-recruitment pheromone components in F. oreas . In two-choice olfactometer bioassays, filter paper soiled with ant chemical deposits significantly deterred female and male ticks. Poison and Dufour's gland extracts deterred ticks in combination but not alone. Gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric analyses of gland extracts revealed formic acid as the major constituent in the poison gland and eight hydrocarbons as constituents in the Dufour's gland. Synthetic formic acid and hydrocarbons deterred ticks only when combined. F. oreas workers sprayed both formic acid and hydrocarbons when distressed. A synthetic blend of these compounds elicited alarm-recruitment responses by F. oreas in behavioural bioassays. Background: Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer death in women. Approximately 50% of breast cancers are discovered at an early stage in patients for whom conservative surgery is indicated. Intraoperative localization of non-palpable breast lesions is generally accomplished using a hook wire to mark the area of concern under ultrasound or stereotactic localization. But this technique has several drawbacks (painful, stressful…). We propose the use of a wire-free breast lesion system using miniature radiofrequency identification (RFID) tags. This technique could improve patient comfort and surgical comfort for surgeons. We therefore propose a study to assess the interest of introducing the RFID localization technique at the Jean PERRIN comprehensive cancer center., Methods: This is a single-center prospective trial designed to assess the interest in introducing the RFID localization technique at the Jean Perrin center. It aims to show the superiority of the RFID technique in terms of patient tolerance compared to the gold-standard (hook wire). A sequential inclusion in time will be performed: 20 inclusions in the gold-standard group, then 20 patients in the RFID group before repeating the inclusion scheme. Any patient requiring preoperative localization will receive a senology consultation. The RFID tag will be placed during this consultation. The hook wire localization will be done the day before the surgery. Patients will fill out a Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale (HAD) questionnaire at the time of inclusion. They will then fill out a satisfaction questionnaire in 2 steps: during the placement of the device (RFID tag or hook wire) or during the postoperative consultation at 1 month. Radiologists and surgeons will fill out a questionnaire to evaluate the localization technique, respectively after the localization and surgery procedures., Discussion: The RFID study is the first study in France which specifically assesses the interest of the RFID localization in terms of patients comfort. Objective: Despite growing interests in patient-reported outcomes, youth and families are rarely involved in designing quality improvement measures. Few quality indicators exist for the care of children with injuries in the Emergency Department (ED) and extremity fractures are among the most common injuries in children. This study's aim was to identify both parents' and youth's perspectives about ED care in the context of a suspected long-bone fracture., Methods: Youth (10-18 years old) and their parents were surveyed prospectively during their ED visit. Participants were asked: 1) to identify their main concerns, 2) to identify quality measures that were most important to them, and 3) to evaluate the ED care they received. Descriptive analyses present participants' responses. Continuous data was analyzed using a Student t-test and categorical data using a Chi-square test., Results: Over 15 months, 350 families met eligibility criteria and were approached to participate, of which 300 participants consented and 249 surveys were completed (71% response rate): 148 parents and 101 youth (median age: 12) completed their respective surveys. Participants placed a high importance on several themes: pain management, short length of stay, and quality interactions with ED clinicians. Youth as a group prioritized their overall wellbeing and the ED environment (e.g., waiting room comfort, signage), while parents focused on accurate diagnoses and treatments. The following items were less prioritized: that radiology be close to the ED, to see the radiograph, to have access to a wheelchair, to know the identities of clinicians on the team, and to have access to entertainment. Parents and youth within the same family often did not share the same priorities. Ninety-two percent of parents reported their child's pain was treated, while 81% and 63% of youth reported their pain was treated sufficiently and quickly, respectively., Conclusions: Parents and youth can identify their priorities for ED care and should be engaged in efforts to improve and report on the quality of care in the ED. Youths' and parents' perspectives are complimentary and may not align, even within families. Objective: To describe the perioperative characteristics and outcomes in dogs that underwent transperitoneal laparoscopic ureteronephrectomy (TLU) for primary renal neoplasia., Study Design: Short case series., Animals: Seven client-owned dogs., Methods: Medical records were reviewed and data extracted regarding perioperative characteristics and animal outcomes. TLU was performed using a single-port + 1 or multiple port techniques. Hemostatic clips or a vessel-sealing device were used for occlusion of renal hilar vessels. The ureter was occluded and transected close to the ureterovesicular junction and the tumor was placed in a specimen retrieval bag for extraction from the abdomen., Results: Preoperative contrast enhanced computed tomography (CECT) was performed in 6/7 dogs. Median estimated tumor volume measured from abdominal CECT removed by TLU was 32.42 cm 3 (interquartile range [IQR] 14.76-94.85). Median surgery time for TLU was 90 minutes (IQR 85-105). In one dog, elective conversion to open laparotomy was performed due to large tumor size. Median time to discharge was 31 hours (IQR 24-48). No major perioperative complications occurred and all dogs survived to discharge. Progression free survival in four dogs was 422 days (IQR 119-784)., Conclusion: TLU was performed for the extirpation of modest sized primary renal tumors with acceptable perioperative outcomes and a low complication rate., Clinical Relevance: TLU may be considered for the treatment of selected cases of primary renal neoplasia in dogs., (© 2021 American College of Veterinary Surgeons.)

Background: Most dogs with sinonasal tumors (SNT) treated with radiation therapy (RT) died because of local disease progression., Hypothesis/objectives: Our hypothesis is that the majority of local failure and residual disease would occur within the radiation field., Animals: Twenty-two dogs with SNT treated with RT., Methods: Retrospective cohort study., Inclusion Criteria: dogs with SNT receiving 10 daily fractions of 4.2 Gy with intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)/image guided radiation therapy (IGRT) and follow-up cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Each CBCT was registered with the original radiation planning CT and the gross tumor volume (GTV) contoured. The GTV was classified as residual (GTVr) or a failure (GTVf). The dose statistic for each GTV was calculated with the original IMRT plan. For GTVf, failures were classified as "in-field," "marginal," or "out-field" if at least 95, 20-95, or less than 20% of the volume of failure was within 95% (D95) of the total prescription dose, respectively., Results: There were 52 follow-up CBCT/CTs. Overall there was a GTVr for 20 dogs and GTVf for 16 dogs. The majority of GTVr volume was within the original GTV. GTVf analysis showed that 75% (12/16) were "in-field," 19% (3/16) were "marginal" and 6% (1/16) were "out-field.", Conclusion and Clinical Importance: In-field failures are the main pattern for local recurrence, and there is evidence of radioresistant subvolumes within the GTV., (© 2021 The Authors.
