11. Winter lightning triggered by wind-turbines: the case of snowstorm Filomena

Abstract

Winter storm Filomena battered the Iberian Peninsula on the 9-10th January 2021, covering the eastern half of Spain with a huge amount of snow. Apart from the historical snowfall, lightning activity was observed during this snowstorm episode. Although most of lightning was oversea, lightning hotspots were observed in different regions across the Iberian Peninsula, such as Galicia, Asturias, Catalunya and Andalucía. A closer look at the inland lightning hotspots showed wind turbines in the close vicinity of most of the lightning. The analysis of the ERA5 variables has shown that environmental conditions were prone to winter lightning. One of the most representative is the height of the −10 °C isotherm, a key variable for cloud electrification. A low height of the −10 °C enhances electric fields at the top of tall man-made structures, like the wind turbines, favouring the inception of upward lightning. Moreover, moving blades are exposed to stronger local electric fields than static objects, favouring the initiation of stable lightning leaders and subsequent lightning strokes.

Abstract

Holdover fires are usually associated with lightning-ignited wildfires (LIWs), which can experience a smouldering phase or go undetected for several hours to days and weeks before being reported. Since the existence and duration of the smouldering combustion in LIWs is usually unknown, holdover time is conventionally defined as the time between the lightning event that ignited the fire and the time the fire is detected. Therefore, all LIWs have an associated holdover time, which may range from a few minutes to several days. However, we lack a comprehensive understanding of holdover times. Here, we introduce a global database on holdover times of LIWs. We have collected holdover time data from 29 different studies across the world through a literature review and datasets assembled by authors of the original studies. The database is composed of three data files (censored data, non-censored data, ancillary data) and three metadata files (description of database variables, list of references, reproducible examples). Censored data are the core of the database and consist of different frequency distributions reporting the number or relative frequency of LIWs per interval of holdover time. In addition, ancillary data provide further information to understand the methods and contexts in which the data were generated in the original studies. The first version of the database contains 42 frequency distributions of holdover time built with data on more than 152,375 LIWs from 13 countries in five continents covering a time span from 1921 to 2020. This database is the first freely available, harmonized, and ready-to-use global source of holdover time data, which may be used in different ways to investigate LIWs and model the holdover phenomenon. Abstract

The 15 January 2017 a strong northerly synoptic flow lead to the generation of mountain waves and heavy snowfall over the eastern Pyrenees, particularly over the Cerdanya valley near the border between France, Spain and Andorra. Measurements from several instruments deployed during the Cerdanya-2017 field campaign and satellite imagery revealed the presence of mountain waves and the formation of an associated rotor underneath the first mountain wave crest. The evolution and location of the mountain waves were studied using high temporal resolution data from a UHF wind-profiler and a vertically pointing K-band Doppler radar, separated a few kilometres in horizontal distance. A mountain wave with a wavelength about 18 km was detected in the morning and shortened slightly in the afternoon when a transient rotor, elevated approximately 140 m above the ground, was formed, disconnected from the surface flow. A strong turbulence zone was identified at the upper edge of the mountain wave, above the rotor, a feature observed in previous studies. The mountain wave and rotor induced circulation was favoured by the valley shape and the second mountain ridge location, in addition to the weak and variable winds, established during the sunset close to the valley surface. The Cerdanya-2017 field campaign is a research effort organised by the University of the Balearic Islands, the University of Barcelona, METEO-FRANCE and the Meteorological Service of Catalonia.
