Background: Although the human adenovirus infection is common, adenovirus infection with liver dysfunction is rare. Methods: To retrospectively analyze and compare the clinical characteristics and outcomes of pediatric patients diagnosed with severe adenovirus pneumonia with and without liver dysfunction, who were admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit of Hunan Children’s Hospital (South China University) between January 2018 and June 2022. Results: Of the 330 severe adenovirus pneumonia cases analyzed (mean age, 19.88 ± 18.26 months), 102 were girls and 228 were boys. They were divided into two groups: those with liver dysfunction (n = 54) and without liver dysfunction (n = 276). Comparison analysis showed no significant between-group differences in body mass index and levels of white blood cells, neutrophils, platelets, albumin, total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, indirect bilirubin, creatine kinase, procalcitonin, creatinine, and urea nitrogen. However, the levels of alanine aminotransferase (175.99 U/L vs 30.55 U/L) and aspartate transaminase (215.96 U/L vs 74.30 U/L) were significantly higher in patients with liver dysfunction compared to those without liver dysfunction. Further analysis showed that pediatric patients with liver dysfunction had a significantly lower percentage of natural killer (NK) cells (6.93% vs 8.71%) and higher mortality rate (22% vs 9%) than those without liver dysfunction. Conclusion: A decrease in serum NK cell levels in pediatric patients with severe adenovirus pneumonia could serve as a marker for monitoring the onset or progression of hepatic damage.

Patients with hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) have high risk of early mortality. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that the elevated level of serum myoglobin among patients with HLH is associated with disease severity and increased risk of mortality. We retrospectively investigated the serum myoglobin levels from 155 pediatric patients diagnosed with HLH in the Hunan Children's Hospital, China. The levels of myoglobin and creatine kinase at hospital admission among non-survivors and survivors were compared. The myoglobin level was dichotomized for the estimation of hazard ratio (HR) for mortality. Patients who died within 7 and 30 days of hospitalization had significantly higher myoglobin levels than did survivors (p 0.05). The myoglobin level was negatively associated with the days of survival among non-survivors (Spearman correlation coefficient = - 0.29, p = 0.04). An elevated myoglobin level ( 90 ng/mL) was significantly associated with increased mortality (unadjusted HR = 2.66, 95%CI: 1.41, 5.00, p = 0.0024) and persisted after adjusting for age, Epstein-Barr virus infection, admission department, acute kidney injury, myocardial damage, and shock. In conclusion, an elevated serum myoglobin level was associated with increased risk of early death among pediatric patients with HLH, suggesting the potential of myoglobin to be used as a reference indicator for monitoring and managing of HLH.

Background Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a life-threatening disorder. How to stratify high risk patients is one of the current challenges for the treatment of HLH. HLH patients usually fulfill multiple but not all eight diagnostic criteria. Different combinations of the fulfilled criteria may naturally cluster into previously undescribed subsets or phenotypes that may have different pathophysiology and demonstrate different risks for a poor outcome. The objectives of this study were to identify HLH subgroups according to the fulfillment of diagnostic criteria and evaluate the risk of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) and 30-day mortality for subgroups. We retrospectively collect medical records of patients with discharge diagnosis of HLH between June 2015 and October 2018 from a tertiary children’s hospital in China. Latent class analysis was used to identify class defining variables from HLH diagnostic items, and subgroups were defined according to different combinations of the class defining variables. Results Triglyceride and fibrinogen were identified as the class defining variables. When evaluated in combinations, patients with hypertriglyceridemia and normal fibrinogen levels during hospitalization had the lowest risks for MODS (27.8%, OR = 1) and 30-day mortality (18.8%, OR = 1), and patients with normal triglyceride and hypofibrinogenemia had the highest risks for MODS (86.2%, OR = 16.24, P = 0.0002) and 30-day mortality (57.1%, OR = 5.78, P = 0.0187). The fulfillment status of hypertriglyceridemia and hypofibrinogenemia within 72 h of hospital admission was also associated with the risk of adverse outcomes. Conclusions The fulfillment status of hypertriglyceridemia and hypofibrinogenemia were associated with the risks of MODS and 30-day mortality among pediatric HLH patients. Further studies are needed to validate this association and investigate its clinical utility in the severity evaluation for HLH.

Phenotypes of some rare genetic diseases are atypical and it is a challenge for pediatric intensive care units (PICUs) to diagnose and manage such patients in an emergency. In this study, we investigated 58 PICU patients (39 deceased and 19 surviving) in critical ill status or died shortly without a clear etiology. Whole exome sequencing was performed of 103 DNA samples from their families. Disease-causing single-nucleotide variants (SNVs) and copy number variants (CNVs) were identified to do genotype-phenotypes analysis. In total, 27 (46.6%) patients received a genetic diagnosis. We identified 34 pathogenic or likely pathogenic SNVs from 26 genes, which are related to at least 19 rare diseases. Each rare disease involved an isolated patient except two patients caused by the same gene ACAT1. The genotypic spectrum was expanded by 23 novel SNVs from gene MARS1, PRRT2, TBCK, TOR1A, ECE1, ARX, ZEB2, ACAT1, CPS1, VWF, NBAS, COG4, and INVS. We also identified two novel pathogenic CNVs. Phenotypes associated with respiratory, multiple congenital anomalies, neuromuscular, or metabolic disorders were the most common. Twenty patients (74.1%) accompanied severe infection, 19 patients (70.1%) died. In summary, our findings expanded the genotypes and phenotypes of 19 rare diseases from PICU with complex characteristics.

The difficulties and challenges of applying the HLH-2004 diagnostic criteria to early identification and diagnosis of haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis have been fully addressed in previous studies. However, the distribution of the diagnostic time lag of haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis and related patient characteristics remain unclear. This study investigated the time lags between symptom onset and diagnosis and between hospital admission and diagnosis among pediatric patients with haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, and identified factors that associated with a shorter or longer diagnostic time lag. The cohort of patients with haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis was drawn from a tertiary children's hospital and consisted of 122 pediatric patients. The distributions of symptom-to-diagnosis and admission-to-diagnosis time lags were assessed. Clinical characteristics within 48 h of admission and the fulfillment of HLH-2004 diagnostic criteria were compared among admission-to-diagnosis time lag categories. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify factors associated with an admission-to-diagnosis time lag >3 days. The median interval from first symptom onset to HLH diagnosis was 12 days (range 4–71 days) and the median interval from hospital admission to HLH diagnosis was 2 days (range 0–23 days). The following factors were negatively associated with admission-to-diagnosis > 3 days: Epstein–Barr virus infection; admission through pediatric intensive care unit; diagnosis established without NK-cell activity and soluble CD25 tests; the performance of all readily available diagnostic tests for HLH (within 48 and 72 h); concurrent fever, splenomegaly, and cytopenias within 48 h; hemophagocytosis, hypertriglyceridemia and/or hypofibrinogenemia within 48 h; and elevated ferritin, total bilirubin, alanine aminotransferase, and prothrombin time within 48 h. Our findings suggest that performance of adequate diagnostic tests for HLH is essential for early diagnosis of HLH. Once suspected, immediate and adequate diagnostic tests for HLH should be arranged for PICU patients. Improvements in diagnostic procedures and monitoring plans are needed to promote early diagnosis of HLH.

To explore the application value of the reconstruction algorithm based on an iterative algorithm in the analysis of CT image and analyze the therapeutic effect of honey-fried Herba Ephedrae combined with Western medicine on acute exacerbation chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD), a total of 96 AECOPD patients admitted to our hospital from January 2018 to December 2019 were selected as research subjects. According to a different treatment method, the subjects were divided into a control group (Ctrl group, conventional therapy) and an observation group (OG, conventional therapy + honey-fried Herba Ephedrae), with 48 in each group. The CT image algorithm was established based on the iterative algorithm, and the CT dose indexes of the reconstruction algorithm and the Filtered Back Projection (FBP) algorithm under the same conditions were compared ( P < 0.05 ). After using CT to confirm the diagnosis of the subjects, the difference in indicators of forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), forced expiratory volume in one second to forced vital capacity ratio (FEV1%), and forced vital capacity (FVC), inflammatory factors of serum interleukin-8 (IL-8), serum interleukin-10 (IL-10), and tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), the bronchial wall area, and the total treatment efficiency before and after different treatment was analyzed. The results suggested that the Computed Tomography Dose Index (CTDI) of iterative reconstruction (IR) algorithm when scanning different parts was higher than that of the FBP algorithm. The pulmonary function indexes and the expression of IL-8 and TNF-α in the OG were higher than those in the Ctrl group ( P < 0.05 ); the bronchial wall area, bronchial wall area percentage, and IL-10 expression in the OG were all lower than those in the Ctrl group ( P < 0.05 ). The effectiveness and improvement rates of the Ctrl group were 47.92% and 25%, respectively, significantly lower than those in the OG group, 56.25% and 31.25% ( P < 0.05 ), and the total efficiency of the observation group was 87.5%, which was significantly higher than that in the Ctrl group (72.92%) ( P < 0.05 ). In conclusion, based on the iterative algorithm, a CT reconstruction algorithm with better noise reduction performance was established, and the use of honey-fried Herba Ephedrae combined with Western medicine can improve the effective rate of treatment.

Hyperentanglement has a higher information density than conventional single-degree-of-freedom entanglement, which has attracted much attention due to its fascinating applications in quantum communication. However, since the inevitable interactions between quantum entangled systems and the environment will drive hyperentangled systems into less hyperentangled states or even mixed hyperentangled states, the efficiency and security of quantum communication will be greatly depressed. The currently existing distillation protocols are not universal, i.e., they only work for the lossy hyperentangled states in specific systems. In this paper, based on local positive-operator-valued measures (POVMs), we present a distillation protocol for lossy hyperentangled photonic Bell and Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states. The intrinsic property of our protocol is twofold, i.e., the POVM nature of the protocol guarantees that the protocol is a universal one, and the distillation operation on only one of the two degrees of freedom (DOFs) can enhance the fidelity of the system in both DOFs. Furthermore, in the implementation level, our hyperentanglement distillation protocol (HEDP) has other two merits: no auxiliary local entanglement resources and sophisticated single-photon detectors are required, and only one copy of the lossy state will be operated in each distillation round, which show that our HEDPs are relatively simple and feasible.

In this study, magnetically immobilized Bacillus natto fermentation approach was developed on Ginkgo seeds. Some parameters potentially influencing the fibrinolytic activity of fermented Ginkgo seeds were systematically investigated and optimized by Plackett-Burman and Box-Behnken designs, and the optimum fermentation conditions obtained were 60 mesh particle size, 150 rpm stirring rate, fermentation pH 6.5, 43.0 h fermentation time, 36.4 °C temperature, 16.4 mL/g liquid-solid ratio and 1.0 g/g beads-solid ratio. After fermentation, the satisfactory fibrinolytic activity of Ginkgo seeds was 3175 ± 43 IU/g. The total flavonoid contents were reached to 2.6 ± 0.2 mg rutin equivalent/g Ginkgo seeds, 2.5-fold higher than that of unfermented Ginkgo seed. The contents of Ginkgolic acids dropped to 2.2 ± 0.4 μg/g Ginkgo seeds, which were 8.3-fold lower than untreated control. Meanwhile, the reusability of magnetically immobilized microorganisms was tested and the activity of magnetically immobilized microorganisms was above 80% after 8 cycles. We concluded that this magnetically immobilized fermentation approach on Ginkgo seeds could be efficiently applied for food and industrial production, and the fermented Ginkgo seeds increased the fibrinolytic activity, flavonoid content and improved the food safety.

For the first time, Isatis tinctoria L. hairy root cultures were exposed to ultraviolet radiation (ultraviolet-A, ultraviolet-B, and ultraviolet-C) in an attempt to promote the production of pharmacologically active flavonoids. Results showed that the maximum flavonoid accumulation (7259.12 ± 198.19 μg/g DW) in I. tinctoria hairy root cultures treated by 108 kJ/m2 dose of UV-B radiation increased 16.51-fold as compared with that in control (439.68 ± 8.27 μg/g DW). Additionally, antioxidant activity enhancement and cell wall reinforcement were found in the treated I. tinctoria hairy root cultures, indicating the positive-feedback responses to oxidative stress mediated by ultraviolet-B radiation. Moreover, the expression of chalcone synthase gene was tremendously up-regulated (up to 405.84-fold) in I. tinctoria hairy root cultures following ultraviolet-B radiation, which suggested chalcone synthase gene might play a crucial role in flavonoid augmentation. Overall, the present work provides a feasible approach for the enhanced production of biologically active flavonoids in I. tinctoria hairy root cultures via the simple supplementation of ultraviolet-B radiation, which is useful for the biotechnological production of these high-added value compounds to fulfil the ever-increasing demand in pharmaceutical fields.

For the first time, I. tinctoria hairy root cultures (ITHRCs) were co-cultured with two immobilized live GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) fungi, i.e. Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus niger, for the elevated production of pharmacologically active flavonoids. Immobilized A. niger (IAN) was exhibited as the superior elicitor in the plant-fungus co-cultivation system. The highest flavonoid production (3018.31 ± 48.66 μg/g DW) were achieved in IAN-treated ITHRCs under the optimal conditions of IAN spore concentration ca.104 spores/mL, temperature 30 °C, initial pH value of media 7.0 and time 72 h, which remarkably increased 6.83-fold relative to non-treated control (441.91 ± 7.35 μg/g DW). Also, this study revealed that IAN elicitation could trigger the sequentially transient accumulation of signal molecules and intensify the oxidative stress in ITHRCs, which both contributed to the up-regulated expression of associated genes involved in flavonoid biosynthetic pathway. Moreover, IAN could be reused at least five cycles with satisfactory performance. Overall, the coupled culture of IAN and ITHRCs is a promising and effective approach for the enhanced production of flavonoids, which allows for the improved applicability of these valuable compounds in pharmaceutical fields.

Laccases are multicopper oxidases (E.C. 1.10.3.2) that catalyze the oxidation of many phenolic compounds. In this study, a novel laccase, Stlac4, from Setosphaeria turcica was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli by insertion into the pET-30a expression plasmid. The recombinant laccase was purified and visualized on SDS-PAGE as a single band with an apparent molecular weight of 71.5 KDa, and confirmed by Western blot. The maximum activity of the purified laccase was 127.78 U · mg-1 , the optimum temperature and pH value were 60 °C and 4.0 respectively, measured by oxidation of 2,2'-Azinobis-(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonate) (ABTS). Purified laccase activity under different metal ions and an inhibitor were tested, revealing that laccase activity increased by approximately 434.8% with Fe3+ , and 217.4% with Cu2+ at 10 mmol · L-1 concentrations, Mn2+ increased the laccase activity only at 5 mmol · L-1 , while Na+ increased activity at 1 mmol · L-1 but inhibited activity at 5 and 10 mmol · L-1 . SDS increased laccase activity at 1 mmol · L-1 , and inhibited activity at 5 and 10 mmol · L-1 .

Amomum tsaoko is widely distributed in south-west China as a spice. In present study, the antibacterial activity of Amomum tsaoko essential oil (AEO) against foodborne pathogens was evaluated. The antibacterial activity was determined by measuring the zones of inhibition (ZOI), minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), and the time-kill assay. Results showed the susceptibility of foodborne bacteria Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) was excellent with the lowest MIC and MBC values of 3.13 and 6.25 mg/mL, respectively. The probable antibacterial mechanism of AEO was the change in permeability and integrity of the cell membranes leading to leakage of nucleic acids and proteins. Detection of the kinetics of E. coli deactivation in situ showed that AEO has good preservative activities in foods. It is necessary to consider that AEO will become a promising antibacterial additive for food preservative.

For vacuum electron acceleration by a Gaussian beam, the energy gain of the electron is sensitively influenced by the initial parameters of the electron and the laser beam. It is necessary to find a group of optimized initial parameters to achieve the highest energy gain. The relationships between the initial parameters and the energy gains are investigated comprehensively by the global optimization method, and the global maximum as well as the local maxima is obtained. Via employing the global optimization of the initial parameters, more efficient electron acceleration has been achieved. Keywords: Electron acceleration, Gaussian beam, Global optimization

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of different energy feeding patterns on the nutritional status, clinical course, and outcome of children with congenital heart disease (CHD) and severe pneumonia. METHODS: A total of 43 malnourished infants, aged < 6 months, who were diagnosed with ventricular septal defect and severe pneumonia and underwent surgical operation from January 1 to December 30, 2017 were enrolled. They were randomly divided into an observation group with 21 infants and a control group with 22 infants. The infants in the observation group were given calorie-enriched formula milk powder (100 kcal/100 mL) after surgery, and those in the control group were given formula milk powder with normal calories (67 kcal/100 mL). The two groups were observed for 3 months to record physical measurements, laboratory markers and nutritional risk screening results. Nutritional status was evaluated for all infants. The two groups were compared in terms of prognosis and adverse events. RESULTS: There were no significant differences between the two groups in physical measurements, laboratory markers, nutritional assessment and nutritional risk screening results on admission (P > 0.05). At discharge and 1 and 3 months after surgery, the control group had significantly higher degree of malnutrition and level of nutritional risk than the observation group (P < 0.05). The analysis of variance with repeated measures showed significant differences in body weight, upper arm circumference, weight-forage Z-score, height-for-age Z-score, weight-for-height Z-score, and albumin level at different time points and between different groups, and there was an interaction between group factors and time factors (P < 0.05). Compared with the control group, the observation group had a significantly lower average daily intake of fluid, a significantly higher average daily intake of energy, and a significantly lower incidence rate of insufficient feeding during hospitalization (P < 0.05). Compared with the control group, the observation group had significantly shorter length of hospital stay, duration of mechanical ventilation, and duration of postoperative pyrexia, as well as significantly lower hospital costs (P < 0.05). No significant adverse reactions were observed in either group. CONCLUSIONS: An appropriate increase in postoperative energy supply for children with CHD can improve the status of malnutrition and clinical outcome.

Efficient preparation of W and GHZ states encoded in various degrees of freedom of quantum particles is vital in quantum information science. So far, most of the studies have focused on polarization encoded photonic W and GHZ states. In this paper, we focus on W- and GHZ-class entangled coherent states, and propose schemes to fuse small W- and GHZ-entangled coherent states into larger ones. Based on successive detuned interactions between optical modes and an ancilla atom, an ( N + M − 2 ) -mode entangled coherent W state can be probabilistically prepared from an N-mode and an M-mode entangled coherent W states. This fusion scheme applies to entangled coherent GHZ states too, and it can succeed in a deterministic way. The ancilla atom only interacts with a single optical mode, which avoids the problem of synchronizing many atoms in the previous cavity QED based fusion schemes. The detuning property of the interaction makes the current fusion scheme more feasible that the ones based on resonant atom–light interactions. In addition, the two levels of the ancilla atom for encoding quantum information are two degenerate ground states, and the excited state is adiabatically eliminated during the fusion process, so the atomic decay from excited states does not affect the quality of the fusion process.

We present two schemes for transforming bipartite non-maximally entangled states into a W state in cavity QED system, by using highly detuned interactions and the resonant interactions between two-level atoms and a single-mode cavity field. A tri-atom W state can be generated by adjusting the interaction times between atoms and the cavity mode. These schemes demonstrate that two bipartite non-maximally entangled states can be merged into a maximally entangled W state. So the scheme can, in some sense, be regarded as an entanglement concentration process. The experimental feasibility of the schemes is also discussed.

New Findings What is the central question of this study? This study aimed to investigate whether induction of haem oxygenase-1 (HO-1) can protect the kidneys of obese rats by regulating the glomerular vascular endothelial growth factor–nitric oxide (VEGF–NO) axis by increasing the adiponectin concentrations. What is the main finding and its importance? Induction of HO-1 reduces the degree of microalbuminuria and has renal protective effects by improving endothelial function and regulating the uncoupled glomerular VEGF–NO axis in diet-induced obese rats. The mechanism may be related to increased activation of the HO-1–adiponectin axis. The glomerular vascular endothelial growth factor–nitric oxide (VEGF–NO) axis plays a critical role in maintenance of normal kidney function in obesity. Induction of haem oxygenase-1 (HO-1) may result in a parallel increase in adiponectin secretion. The aim of this study was to investigate whether induction of HO-1 could protect the kidneys of obese rats by regulating the glomerular VEGF–NO axis by increasing adiponectin levels. Rats received high-fat diets and were injected with either cobalt protoporphyrin to induce HO-1 or stannous protoporphyrin to inhibit HO-1. Blood and urine samples were collected. Endothelial function was determined by measuring the endothelium-dependent vasodilatation of the aorta. Renal tissues were collected for CD34 immunohistochemistry. The glomerular VEGF–NO axis and the AMP kinase–phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt–endothelial nitric oxide synthase pathway were measured. Induction of HO-1 by cobalt protoporphyrin decreased microalbuminuria, plasma free fatty acids, serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and malondialdehyde levels and increased serum adiponectin levels compared with the untreated obese rats. Severe impairment of endothelium-dependent vasodilatation was observed in the obese rats, which was improved to some extent by HO-1 induction. Induction of HO-1 reduced glomerular CD34 expression and production of reactive oxygen species in obese rats. Obese rats showed increased glomerular VEGF expression and reduced NO levels. This uncoupling of the glomerular VEGF–NO axis was improved to some extent by induction of HO-1, with enhancement of p-AMP kinase, p-Akt and phospho-endothelial nitric oxide synthase in obese rats. These results indicate that induction of HO-1 with cobalt protoporphyrin reduces the degree of microalbuminuria and has renal protective effects by improving endothelial dysfunction and regulating the glomerular VEGF–NO axis in diet-induced obese rats by increasing adiponectin levels.

In this paper, we study how to fuse two W states into a larger W state in a cavity quantum electrodynamic system. Two atoms are collided within a detuned vacuum cavity mode. One atom is from the first N-atom W state system, and the other is from the second M-atom W state system. The two atoms will be detected after flying out of the cavity mode. If only one excitation is detected between the two atoms, an (N + M − 2)-atom W state can be generated with some probability. If no excitation is detected between the two atoms, the remaining (N − 1)-atom W state and (M − 1)-atom W state can be re-fused using the same procedure, continuing until two excitations are detected between the two atoms. Using this procedure, the chance of entanglement of the two W states is as large as possible. A feasibility analysis indicates that this scheme can be implemented using existing experimental technologies.

A cocultivation system of Astragalus membranaceus hairy root cultures (AMHRCs) and immobilized food-grade fungi was established for the enhanced production of calycosin (CA) and formononetin (FO). The highest accumulations of CA (730.88 ± 63.72 μg/g DW) and FO (1119.42 ± 95.85 μg/g DW) were achieved in 34 day-old AMHRCs cocultured with immobilized A. niger (IAN) for 54 h, which were 7.72- and 18.78-fold higher than CA and FO in nontreated control, respectively. IAN deglycosylation could promote the formation of CA and FO by conversion of their glycoside precursors. IAN elicitation could intensify the generation of endogenous signal molecules involved in plant defense response, which contributed to the significantly up-regulated expression of genes in CA and FO biosynthetic pathway. Overall, the coupled culture of IAN and AMHRCs offered a promising and effective in vitro approach to enhance the production of two health-promoting isoflavone aglycones for possible nutraceutical and pharmaceutical uses.

Outbreaks of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) have increased recently, as has the case fatality rate in severe cases. No scoring system currently exists to predict mortality risk for severe HFMD in previous study. We retrospectively collected laboratory parameters for 546 patients with severe HFMD (a derivation and a validation cohort) at Hunan Children’s Hospitals between January 2012 and December 2014. We developed a mortality risk score comprising four laboratory parameters: blood glucose (GLU), white blood cells (WBC), lactate (LAC), and N-terminal-probrain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP). Using an “optimal” cutoff score of 4, the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value was 88.00%, 96.14%, 62.86% and 99.08%, respectively, in the derivation cohort. Among severe HFMD patients with low- and high-risk scores in the validation cohort, case fatality rates were 1.49% and 74.07%, respectively. According to the “optimal” cut-off in the derivation cohort, the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value were 80.95%, 93.83%, 62.96% and 97.44%, respectively, in the derivation cohort. The mortality risk score demonstrated good discrimination (AUC > 0.9) and calibration (P > 0.05) in both cohorts. The mortality risk score, comprising WBC, GLU, LAC and NT-proBNP, has been demonstrated good discrimination and calibration in the both cohorts.

Fusion technology has been demonstrated to be a good method for generating a large-scale entangled coherent W or GHZ state from two small ones in QED system. It is of importance to study how to fuse small-scale entangled coherent W or GHZ states via optical system. In this paper, we present a scheme for generating larger entangled coherent W or GHZ state in an optical system by virtue of fusion technology. The key fusion mechanism is realized by photon detectors and a Mach---Zehnder interferometer with its two arms immersed in Kerr media, by which an n-mode entangled coherent W state and an m-mode entangled coherent W state can be probabilistically fused into an ($$n+m-2$$n+m-2)-mode entangled coherent W state. This fusion scheme applies to entangled coherent GHZ state too but with a unit probability of success. Feasibility analysis indicates that our fusion scheme may be realized with current experimental technology. Large-scale entangled coherent W and GHZ states may find new applications in quantum communication.

Detecting evolving communities in dynamic weighted networks are significant for understanding the evolutionary patterns of complex networks. In this paper, a novel algorithm is proposed to detect overlapping evolutionary spatiotemporal communities in the global trading network, a dynamic weighted network. This algorithm is capable of discovering those edges with similar evolving trend in a weighted community, and revealing the evolutionary of nodes and edge weight vectors simultaneously. Experiments on the global trading network show that the proposed algorithm can discover more evolving behaviors and properties which hide in those seemingly stable community structures.

Based on resonant interactions between atoms and cavity modes, we have designed a scheme for expanding atomic entangled W states. By sending one of the atoms in a N-atom W state and an auxiliary excited-state atom into an vacuum cavity, we have obtained a (N ? 1)-atom W state by detecting the cavity field after interaction. The feasibility analysis indicates that this scheme may be implementable in near future.

Two manganese–amine complexes incorporating thioantimonates, namely (dienH3)[(dienH)MnSb8S15]·H2O (dien = diethylenetriamine) (1) and [Mn(teta)(H2O)2]2[Mn(tren)]2Sb3S12·H3O (2, teta = triethylenetetramine, tren = tris(2-aminoethyl)amine), have been solvothermally synthesized and structurally characterized. Interestingly, the organic amines show diversiform structure-directing actions in the title compounds. In compound 1, two dien molecules exhibit partial coordination to Mn2+ ions and protonated cations, and compound 2 contains mixed tetradentate tren and teta chelating amines. The optical properties, thermal stabilities and magnetic properties have also been studied.

Four types of tetraphenyl silsesquioxane based covalent-organic frameworks (sil-COFs) were designed with the ctn and bor net topologies using molecular mechanics. The computed results revealed that these sil-COFs possess excellent structural properties, such as high porosity (89–95%) and large H2 accessible surface area (5476–6331 m2 g−1), which is advantageous to hydrogen storage. The H2 adsorption isotherms of these sil-COFs were simulated using the grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) method at 77 K and 298 K. The simulated results indicated that at 77 K, sil-COF-4 has the highest gravimetric hydrogen storage capacity of 36.82 wt%, while sil-COF-1 has the highest volumetric hydrogen storage capacity of 63.53 g L−1. At 298 K, sil-COF-4 has the highest gravimetric hydrogen uptake of 5.50 wt%, which already exceeds the U.S. Department of Energy's goal (4.5 wt%) for 2017 and is also very close to the criterion of 6 wt% for practical applications of hydrogen at room temperature. In addition, two possible schemes are proposed to synthesize the sil-COFs.

The aroma volatiles of four varieties of mango (Mangifera indica L.) ('Guire 82', 'Tainong 1', 'Mallika' and 'Hongmang 9') cultivated in Zhanjiang, Guangdong province were obtained by solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and analyzed by GC/MS in the skin and pulp at the fully ripe stage. The Total Soluble Solid (TSS) and color of skin and pulp were also studied. The aroma volatiles with the highest content in the four varieties were: (Z)-β-ocimene (43.02%), Terpinolene (68.37%), D-Limonene（54.91%) and 3-Carene（49.951%) in the skin and (Z)-β-ocimene (82.32%), Terpinolene (67.84%), Cinene (68.33%) and 3-Carene (67.86%) in the pulp. There were 22 and 7 volatiles detected in the skin and pulp of 'Guire 82', respectively. The numbers of volatiles obtained from the skin and pulp of 'Mallika' and 'Hongmang 9' were (30, 32) and (12, 10), respectively.

Drought is one of the major abiotic stresses limiting rice ( Oryza sativa L.) production. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) for drought tolerance (DT) at the reproductive stage were identified with two sets of advanced backcross introgression lines (ILs) using a common donor Tarom Molaei introgressed separately into two recipients used as female parents, Teqing and Ir64. A total of 24 and 22 QTL were identified in the Ir64 and Teqing backgrounds, respectively, during the reproductive stage under drought and irrigated conditions for thousand-grain weight, panicle number per plant, filled grains per panicle, seed fertility, and grain yield per plant. Most of these QTL showed obvious differential expression in response to drought stress. In addition, another 12 QTL were detected by the ratio of trait values under drought stress relative to the normal irrigation condition in the two backgrounds. The Tarom Molaei alleles at 8 of 12 loci with increased trait values could improve tolerance under drought stress. only three (18.8%) DT QTL ( QTgw7, QSf7, and QFgp11) were in common in the two backgrounds, clearly suggesting overwhelming genetic background effects on QTL detection for DT. Mitogen activated protein kinase kinase (MAPKK) is a crucial component in the MAPK signaling pathway. However, the functions of MAPKKs in foliar pathogens remain poorly understood. In the current study, a MAPKK gene designated as StPBS2 was cloned from Setosphaeria turcica and the functions of this gene were investigated by RNAi technology. Four independent StPBS2 gene silence transformants with different efficiencies were confirmed by real time PCR. Compared to the wild type strain (WT), these transformants showed decreased colony growth, shortened hyphae cell length, broadened cell width and an obvious reduction in conidium yield. Moreover, the cell wall of the transformants was thicker and they were also more sensitive to substances that interfere with cell wall biosynthesis than WT. Additionally, the transformants displayed higher sensitivity to hypertonic stress than WT and the sensitivity was associated with the level of silencing of StPBS2. They were also resistant to the fungicides iprodione, procymidone and fludioxonil, to which WT almost completely sensitive. The transformants produced more red secondary metabolites than WT and the production was enhanced with increasing silencing level and increased glucose content in PDA medium. Our results suggest that StPBS2 is involved in morphogenesis, condiogenesis, cell wall development, hypertonic stress reaction and resistance to fungicides, as well as in the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites in S. turcica.

We present a deterministic scheme for generating large-scale atomic W states in cavity QED system via a simple expansion mechanism, which is realized only by a detuned interaction between two identical atoms and a vacuum cavity mode. With the presented scheme, a W-type Bell pair can be created and an n-atom W state can be expanded to a 2n-atom W state with a unit probability of success in principle. No multi-atom gates, quantum memories or quantum non-demolition measurements are required, greatly simplifying the experimental realization of the scheme. The feasibility analysis shows that our expansion scheme can be implemented with state-of-the-art technologies. Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is one of the main causes of heart failure and could increase death, hospitalization, and rehospitalization rate. The effect of conventional medicine treatment (CMT) is limited; meanwhile, the combination of CMT and Oral Chinese Herbal Medicine (OCHM) represents exciting adjunctive therapies. In this study, we ascertained the therapeutic effect of OCHM in combination with CMT for dilated cardiomyopathy by using meta-analysis methods for controlled clinical trials. We searched studies from five databases and extracted data from these studies. We also assessed the methodological quality of the included studies. We evaluated the following outcome measures to estimate the prognosis in patients with DCM: left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), left ventricular end-diastolic dimension (LVEDD), stroke volume (SV), brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), 6-minute walk test (6MWT), and overall efficacy. The result showed that OCHM combined with CMT for the improvement of therapeutic effect in DCM patients. However, the evidence remains weak due to the small sample size, high clinical heterogeneity, and poor methodological quality of the included trials. Further, large sample size and well-designed trials are needed.
