Abstract

This study investigates potential areas for research and development in the feed sectors in Italy and Serbia. A questionnaire was submitted to 113 feed companies, 37% of these answered. Frequency statistics, data graphs and Simple Correspondence Analysis was obtained. Results indicated that 7% of responders in Italy and 47% of Serbia have not planned any budged for research and development in the last 3 years. The industrial processes were the main focus for Italy, while new product developments for Serbia. For both countries will be essential in the near future increase in product quality, search for new markets and reduction of energy consumption. Additionally, it was observed that company dimension is linked to the area/focus of innovation, irrespective of the type of feed production.

Abstract

The growing world population and rising income in developing countries create more demand for animal products. However, natural resources such as land, water, and nutrients are not boundless. As a consequence, competition of resources in food and feed production is an issue to be confronted with. One promising solution is relocating food losses into animal feeding, propelling the course of sustainability and circular economy in the livestock sector. Given this scenario, former food products (FFPs) represent great opportunities. Instead of ending up in landfill or compost, a better destination for FFPs is to be used as feedstuffs to replace traditional ingredients. FFPs are foodstuffs not accepted by the human market but have several advantages enabling them to enter swine feeding programs. FFPs are mainly composed of processed and readyto- eat food products such as snacks and bakery goods. Thanks to industrial processing and their product type nature, FFPs are rich in easily digestible starch, simple sugars, fat, and energy contents comparable with cereal grains. Based on their nutritional features, these materials are extremely rich in carbohydrates, free sugars and, depending on their origin, also in fats. In addition, FFPs are often characterized by a high degree of processing including technological and heat treatments which can affect not only the availability of nutrients and the kinetics of digestion, but also gastro-intestinal health and animal response. On fresh matter basis, FFPs can substitute conventional feed ingredients up to 30 % in the diets of pigs. Starting from post-weaning piglets, FFP-based diet is able to maintain piglet growth without substantial effects on hindgut microbiota. In growing-finishing pigs, FFP-based diets at a 30 % inclusion level support growth performance of pigs without altering their nutrient and energy deposition efficiency, live body and carcass composition, and general meat quality traits. When considering liver proteome and plasma peptidome of pigs fed such diets, minor modulation occurs. To sum up, while maintaining the performance and wellbeing of pigs, the use of FFPs up to 30 % to replace classic feedstuffs represents a great potential in: i) mitigating food-feed competition, ii) re-distributing valuable food losses to livestock sector to produce animal protein, and iii) reducing environmental footprints resulting from animal production. All these aspects point out important concepts under the principles of circular economy and resilience enhancement in livestock farming, namely, making the most of resources to build a regenerative food system. No contexto de patrimônio cultural, identificou-se que a região possui um setor metalmecânico importante, no qual muitas empresas produzem para o setor automobilístico. Um selo é um importante instrumento para que os consumidores possam fazer suas escolhas, em diferentes segmentos, que via de regra, buscam informar características. Alguns selos são emitidos por Institutos como o INMETRO ou por outras entidades e até mesmo pelos próprios fabricantes. Por meio do diálogo construtivo e transformador, proposto no item II do artigo 6º da Resolução nº 7, de 18 de dezembro de 2018, com os demais setores da sociedade brasileira e internacional, respeitado e promovendo a interculturalidade, definiu-se a temática do projeto: o desenvolvimento de um selo de segurança com o tripé qualidade, sustentabilidade e nacionalidade para avaliar as peças automobilísticas produzidas pelas empresas Açopeças e Zen S/A.

38. Proteomic/peptidomic profile and Escherichia coli\ud growth inhibitory effect of in vitro digested soya\ud protein

Abstract

Plant proteins contain bioactive peptides with functional properties and physiological activities.\ud In the present work, the bioactive peptides produced during in vitro gastrointestinal digestion\ud of soya protein isolate were investigated. Protein samples were subjected to simulated gastrointestinal\ud digestion with a generation of permeate (3 kDa) fractions.\ud The permeate was analysed by nano-liquid chromatography electrospray ionisation tandem\ud mass spectrometry (LC-nano ESI MS/MS) using a shotgun peptidomic approach, and the retentate\ud was further digested with trypsin and analysed using a shotgun proteomic approach. Based\ud on protein profile observed, the retentate was further tested for its potential antimicrobial activity\ud by evaluating the inhibitory effect on E. coli growth. In the present study the peptidomic/\ud proteomic characterisation of permeate and retentate fractions revealed the presence of bioactive\ud peptides and proteins associated with antioxidant, ACE-inhibitory, anti-hypertensive and\ud antimicrobial activities. The presence of potentially antimicrobial proteins in the retentate fraction\ud is supported by a marked E. coli F18þ growth inhibitory activity of the same fraction. In\ud particular, the growth inhibitory effect was significant from one until six hours of incubation\ud with 0.65–2.6 mg/ml of in vitro digested soya. The obtained data confirmed that soya-based supplements\ud may have potential beneficial effects after human consumption, and they may be recycled\ud for animal nutrition in line with the circular economy concept.

41. The contribution of dietary magnesium in farm animals and\ud human nutrition

Abstract

Magnesium (Mg) is a mineral that plays an essential role as cofactor of more than 300 enzymes.\ud Mg in farm animals’ and human nutrition is recommended to avoid Mg deficiency, ensure\ud adequate growth and health maintenance. Mg supplementation above the estimated minimum\ud requirements is the best practice to improve farm animals’ performances (fertility and yield) and\ud food products’ quality, since the performance of farm animals has grown in recent decades. Mg\ud supplementation in pigs increases meat quality and sows’ fertility; in poultry, it helps to avoid\ud deficiency-related health conditions and to improve meat quality and egg production by laying hens;\ud in dairy cows, it serves to avoid grass tetany and milk fever, two conditions related to hypomagnesaemia,\ud and to support their growth. Thus, Mg supplementation increases food products’ quality\ud and prevents Mg deficiency in farm animals, ensuring an adequate Mg content in animal-source\ud food. These latter are excellent Mg sources in human diets. Sub-optimal Mg intake by humans has\ud several implications in bone development, muscle function, and health maintenance. This review\ud summarizes the main knowledge about Mg in farm animals and in human nutrition.

Abstract

The importance of the impact of the food system not only on human health but also on planet health is gaining growing attention, and there is now an urgent call to action for developing multi-stakeholder strategies able to end poverty and maintain prosperity and health for people and for the planet. To provide a better understanding of the complex relationships between food, well-being and environment, it is pivotal to generate multidisciplinary knowledge on the promotion of human well-being in relation to multiple interconnected factors such as diet and nutrition, environment, economic, social, and legal aspects. Based on these premises, the present paper aims at describing the proposed role of the Joint Research Center “Innovation for Well-Being and Environment” (CRC I-WE) that was brought to light in 2019 with a strong interdisciplinary nature at the University of Milan, Italy. In 2021, the Center hosted its first annual conference aimed at identifying case studies from the food, health, and sustainability fields particularly deserving an interdisciplinary approach, and which may provide the basis for opening a wider discussion with the scientific community.

Abstract

Former food products (FFPs) are foodstuffs that, even though they are nutritious and safe, have lost their value on the human consumption market for different reasons, such as production errors leading to broken or intermediate foodstuffs, surpluses caused by logistical challenges of daily delivery, or any other reason. The nutritional features of FFPs include carbohydrates, free sugars, and possibly also fats. FFPs tend to have been processed through various technological and heat treatments that impact the nutrients and the kinetics of digestion, as well as animal response and, particularly, gastro-intestinal health. This review integrates some of the most recently published works about the chemical composition, nutritional value, digestibility and glycaemic index of ex-foods. In addition, a view on the relationship between the use of FFPs and safety issues and their effects on pigs&rsquo, intestinal microbiota are also given.
