Several hundred gamma-ray burst (GRB) redshifts have been determined to date. One of the other important properties-besides the distance-of the GRBs is the duration of the burst. In this paper, we analyse these two important quantities of the phenomena. In this paper, we map the two-dimensional distribution and explore some suspicious areas. As it is well known that the short GRBs are closer than the others, we search for parts in the Universe where the GRB duration is different from the others. We also analyse whether there are any ranges in the duration where the redshifts differ. The Hercules-Corona Borealis Great Wall is a statistically significant clustering of gamma-ray bursts around redshift 2. Motivated by recent theoretical results indicating that a maximal Universal structure size may indeed coincide with its estimated size (2-3Gpc), we reexamine the question of this Great Wall's existence from both observational and theoretical perspectives. Our statistical analyses confirm the clustering's presence in the most reliable data set currently available, and we present a video showing what this data set looks like in~3D. Cosmological explanations (i.e. having to do with the distribution of gravitating matter) and astrophysical explanations (i.e. having to do with the rate of star formation over cosmic time and space) regarding the origin of such a structure are presented and briefly discussed and the role of observational bias is also discussed at length. This, together with the scientific importance of using gamma-ray bursts as unique cosmological probes, emphasises the need for future missions such as the THESEUS satellite which will provide us with unprecedentedly homogeneous data of gamma-ray bursts with measured redshifts. The afterglow of a gamma ray burst (GRB) can give us valuable insight into the properties of its host galaxy. To correctly interpret the spectra of the afterglow we need to have a good understanding of the foreground interstellar medium (ISM) in our own Galaxy. The common practice to correct for the foreground is to use neutral hydrogen (HI) data from the Leiden/Argentina/Bonn (LAB) survey. However, the poor spatial resolution of the single dish data may have a significant effect on the derived column densities. To investigate this, we present new high-resolution HI observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) towards 4 GRBs. We combine the interferometric ATCA data with single dish data from the Galactic All Sky Survey (GASS) and derive new Galactic HI column densities towards the GRBs. We use these new foreground column densities to fit the Swift XRT X-ray spectra and calculate new intrinsic hydrogen column density values for the GRB host galaxies. We find that the new ATCA data shows higher Galactic HI column densities compared to the previous single dish data, which results in lower intrinsic column densities for the hosts. We investigate the line of sight optical depth near the GRBs and find that it may not be negligible towards one of the GRBs, which indicates that the intrinsic hydrogen column density of its host galaxy may be even lower. The Fermi GBM catalog provides a large database with many measured variables that can be used to explore and verify gamma-ray burst classification results. We have used Principal Component Analysis and statistical clustering techniques to look for clustering in a sample of 801 gamma-ray bursts described by sixteen classification variables. The analysis recovers what appears to be the Short class and two long-duration classes that differ from one another via peak flux, with negligible variations in fluence, duration and spectral hardness. Neither class has properties entirely consistent with the Intermediate GRB class. Spectral hardness has been a critical Intermediate class property. Rather than providing spectral hardness, Fermi GBM provides a range of fitting variables for four different spectral models; it is not intuitive how these variables can be used to support or disprove previous GRB classification results., Comment: accepted more...

GRB170817A, associated with the LIGO-Virgo GW170817 neutron-star merger event, lacks the short duration and hard spectrum of a Short gamma-ray burst (GRB) expected from long-standing classification models. Correctly identifying the class to which this burst belongs requires comparison with other GRBs detected by the Fermi GBM. The aim of our analysis is to classify Fermi GRBs and to test whether or not GRB170817A belongs - as suggested - to the Short GRB class. The Fermi GBM catalog provides a large database with many measured variables that can be used to explore gamma-ray burst classification. We use statistical techniques to look for clustering in a sample of 1298 gamma-ray bursts described by duration and spectral hardness. Classification of the detected bursts shows that GRB170817A most likely belongs to the Intermediate, rather than the Short GRB class. We discuss this result in light of theoretical neutron-star merger models and existing GRB classification schemes. It appears that GRB classification schemes may not yet be linked to appropriate theoretical models, and that theoretical models may not yet adequately account for known GRB class properties. We observed high S/N, high velocity resolution NH$_3$(1,1) and (2,2) emission on an extended map in TMC-1, a filamentary cloud in a nearby quiescent star forming area. By fitting multiple hyperfine-split line profiles to the NH$_3$(1,1) spectra we derived the velocity distribution of the line components and calculated gas parameters on several positions. Herschel SPIRE continuum observations were reduced and used to calculate the physical parameters of the Planck Galactic Cold Clumps in the region. The Herschel-based column density map of TMC-1 shows a main ridge with two local maxima and a separated peak to the south-west. H$_2$-column densities and dust temperatures are in the range of 0.5-3.3 $\times$ 10$^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ and 10.5-12 K, respectively. NH$_3$-column densities are 2.8-14.2 $\times$ 10$^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$ and and H$_2$-volume densities are 0.4-2.8 $\times$ 10$^4$ cm$^{-3}$. Kinetic temperatures are typically very low with a minimum of 9 K, and a maximum of 13.7 K was found at the Class I protostar IRAS 04381+2540. The kinetic temperatures vary similarly as the dust temperatures in spite of the fact that densities are lower than the critical density for coupling between the gas and dust phase. The k-means clustering method separated four sub-filaments in TMC-1 in the position-velocity-column density parameter space. They have masses of 32.5, 19.6, 28.9 and 45.9 M$_{\odot}$, low turbulent velocity dispersion (0.13-0.2 kms$^{-1}$) and they are close to gravitational equilibrium. We label them TMC-1F1 through F4. TMC-1F1, TMC-1F2 and TMC-1F4 are very elongated, dense and cold. TMC-1F3 is a little less elongated and somewhat warmer, probably heated by IRAS 04381+2540 that is embedded in it. TMC-1F3 is $\approx$ 0.1 pc behind TMC1-F1. Published observational data on 39 combined type-II/type-IV solar radio bursts from the period 1972-1982 are analyzed, with a focus on the potential use of the type-IV burst duration to predict the time of arrival at earth of piston-driven shock waves (extending and modifying the prediction method proposed by Smart and Shea, 1985). The data and analysis results are presented in tables and graphs and characterized in detail. It is found that a typical shock of this type leaves the solar flare at velocity 1560 km/sec and continues for a distance of 0.12 AU, decelerates as it is convected by the solar wind, and has a travel time of about 48.5 h. In many cosmic environments electric charging of dust particles occurs by electrons, ions, and UV radiation. In case of interstellar dust particles the value of their electric charge can have, for instance, very important consequences for their destruction rate in supernova remnant's shock waves and can globally influence the overall life cycle of dust particles in galaxies. For experimental simulation of charging processes a vacuum chamber was used in which the particles fall through an electron or ion beam of energies up to 10 KeV. The aim of the experiments was to attain maximum charge of dust particles. Furthermore the influence of the rest gas was also determined because electrons and ions produced by collisional ionization of the rest gas can result in significant effects. For measurement particles from 1 to 100 microns from glass, carbon, Al, Fe, MgO, and very loosely bound conglomerates of Al2O3 were used. more...

One of the most significant features of the flare-associated Forbush decreases (Fds) in the galatctic cosmic ray (c.r.) is the so-called East-West asymmetry: the solar flares (Sfs) observed in the Eastern or central region of the solar disk exhibit a higher probability to cause large Fds than the Sfs occurring in the Western portion of the disk. In particular the interplanetary perturbations generated by Type IV Sfs depress the c.r. intensity in a vast spiral cone-like region (modulated region) which extends along the interplanetary magnetic field from the neighborhood of the active region to the advancing perturbation, and that, immediately after the flare-generated perturbation, the maximum c.r. modulation is observed between 0 and 40 deg. W of the meridian plane crossings the flare site at time of flare (flare's meridian plane). more...

A series of energetic storm particle (ESP) events is investigated on the basis of observations of energetic solar protons by IMPs IV and V between 1967 and 1972. The total number and energy of particles associated with 20 ESP events are analyzed in connection with several plasma parameters at the shock surface; i.e., magnetic and thermal pressure, magnetic field and plasma mass flux. Correlation is established between the total energy of ESPs in the energy range of 1-80 MeV and the jump in the total pressure. It is pointed out that the amount of shock energy converted to the acceleration of ESP particles is not negligible and could, in principle, contribute to the deceleration of the shock wave. more...
