The surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory consists of 1600 water-Cherenkov detectors, for the study of extensive air showers (EAS) generated by ultra-high-energy cosmic rays. We describe the trigger hierarchy, from the identification of candidate showers at the level of a single detector, amongst a large background (mainly random single cosmic ray muons), up to the selection of real events and the rejection of random coincidences. Such trigger makes the surface detector array fully efficient for the detection of EAS with energy above $3\times 10^{18}$ eV, for all zenith angles between 0$^\circ$ and 60$^\circ$, independently of the position of the impact point and of the mass of the primary particle. In these range of energies and angles, the exposure of the surface array can be determined purely on the basis of the geometrical acceptance., Comment: 29 pages, 12 figures

The Pierre Auger Observatory is a hybrid detector for ultra-high energy cosmic rays. It combines a surface array to measure secondary particles at ground level together with a fluorescence detector to measure the development of air showers in the atmosphere above the array. The fluorescence detector comprises 24 large telescopes specialized for measuring the nitrogen fluorescence caused by charged particles of cosmic ray air showers. In this paper we describe the components of the fluorescence detector including its optical system, the design of the camera, the electronics, and the systems for relative and absolute calibration. We also discuss the operation and the monitoring of the detector. Finally, we evaluate the detector performance and precision of shower reconstructions., Comment: 53 pages. We consider the full Boltzmann equations for standard and soft leptogenesis, instead of the usual integrated Boltzmann equations which assume kinetic equilibrium for all species. Decays and inverse decays may be inefficient for thermalising the heavy-(s)neutrino distribution function, leading to significant deviations from kinetic equilibrium. We analyse the impact of using the full kinetic equations in the case of a previously generated lepton asymmetry, and find that the washout of this initial asymmetry due to the interactions of the right-handed neutrino is larger than when calculated via the integrated equations. We also solve the full Boltzmann equations for soft leptogenesis, where the lepton asymmetry induced by the soft SUSY-breaking terms in sneutrino decays is a purely thermal effect, since at T=0 the asymmetry in leptons cancels the one in sleptons. In this case, we obtain that in the weak washout regime (K ~< 1) the final lepton asymmetry can change up to a factor four with respect to previous estimates., Comment: 34 pages, 6 figures, to be published in JCAP

27. Supersymmetry breaking : models of gauge mediation with gauge messengers

With the start of the LHC, it becomes increasingly important to understand the experimental signatures that discriminate different extensions of the standard model. Supersymmetry (SUSY), in particular the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), is one such extension that is specially attractive by its simplicity and elegance. However, if this symmetry is to be realized in nature, it must be spontaneously broken. In this work we will try to understand the most general way in which SUSY breaking can happen in renormalizable field theories and the implications that this has on the minimal extension of the standard model (MSSM) mass spectrum. The first two chapters are the introductory material: in chapter 1 we will introduce some of the key ideas necessary to understand supersymmetric field theories, and in chapter 2 we will briefly describe the the simplest supersymmetric version of the Standard Model. In chapter 3 we will focus on understanding the role of R-Symmetry breaking in determining the soft terms gauge mediation of supersymmetry breaking (GMSB) can lead to. To do this we consider a model where both R-symmetry and SUSY are spontaneously broken. One starts with the model proposed by Intriligator, Seiberg and Shih (ISS) and adds a (dangerous) marginal operator, which we call a meson deformation. The inclusion of this operator leads to the spontaneous breaking of R-symmetry in the vacuum. One then gauges the SU(5) of flavour and identifies it with the MSSM GUT gauge group, thus implementing GMSB. This was the second explicit example where R-symmetry was spontaneously broken in the vacuum. As in the first, gaugino masses iii turned out to be smaller than naively expected so that a mild splitting between scalar (squark and slepton) and gaugino masses exists. After this, a general argument showed that in fact gaugino masses are always significantly smaller than scalar masses if the universe is perturbatively stable. This arguments suggests that any viable vacuum should be (perturbatively) metastable, as had been previously noticed by Murayama and Nomura. In chapter 4, we try to explore alternatives to this scenario by considering the possibility that the vacuum doesn’t break supersymmetry by F-term vevs alone, but by a having simultaneously non-zero F and D-terms. It turns out that this does not happen in models where the Kahler potential is canonical, and the superpotential is a cubic polynomial in the fields, but it can happen if either of these constraints is violated. This leads us to consider a particular example, where we study a hidden sector model with SU(3) gauge group, two flavours of quarks and one singlet. The superpotential is the most general consistent with the tree-level symmetries. The R-symmetry is anomalous, however, but one can still derive selection rules that constrain the form of the effective superpotential. The only extra term that is allowed is an instanton induced contribution. This term explicitly breaks the R-symmetry, but the resulting low energy superpotential is not generic and SUSY is still spontaneously broken. While not a complete example of GMSB, this class of hidden sector models is interesting as it does not require metastability: the tension between the spontaneous breaking of an R-symmetry and the massless R-axion is bypassed by the naturally non-generic superpotential. These models usually have both F and D-term SUSY breaking, but these two vevs are not independent: in non-Abelian theories, the D-term vevs can only be induced by the F-term vevs of fields that are not gauge singlets. The implementation of GMSB in scenarios where the F-terms are not gauge singlets is then considered in both its direct and semi-direct forms: iv In chapter 5 we deal with direct gauge mediation with gauge messengers. In this version of gauge mediation, the spontaneously broken gauge group is identified with the MSSM GUT gauge group and generically leads to tachyonic squark or slepton masses. In the particular case where the GUT gauge group is SU(5), we show that this problem can be solved if there are two independent sectors where SUSY is spontaneously broken or simply by using a solution of the doublet-triplet splitting problem where the vev responsible for the spontaneous breaking of the GUT symmetry is larger than the SUSY breaking scale. In both cases the effects gauge and non-gauge messengers have to combine if a viable spectrum is to be reached. We then finish out study in chapter 6 by considering the semi-direct version of gauge mediation with gauge messengers. As it is known, gaugino masses are screened from messenger interactions, at leading order in the SUSY breaking parameter F. Because of this, gaugino soft masses will be suppressed with respect to scalar soft masses. This leads to a scenario of mildly split SUSY, i.e. scalars are at least one or two orders of magnitude heavier than gauginos. This generically leads to some extra fine-tuning to get the EW breaking scale to occur at the correct scale.

- Abstract
Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally. The availability of successful anticancer agents in the market is limited, and the development process of a new drug molecule is slow and difficult. The currently available commercial formulations are not sufficient to produce the desired therapeutic response within a specific time limit. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop novel nanocarrier-based therapies to defeat the restrictions of existing therapeutics. Nanoparticles have been investigated as novel formulations but are often inefficient in practical applications. However, several unanswered questions and challenges exist in their clinical development; thus, a better understanding of their influence on cancer biology, stability, and toxicity needs to be gained. This review discusses different types of lung cancers as well as diagnostic approaches to lung cancer. The review also explores the drug targeting mechanisms to cancer cells through nanoparticles and multi-drug resistance-associated challenges in lung cancer therapy. Various nanocarrier systems that are safe and effective for drug delivery in the treatment of lung cancer have been discussed. This communication will be of high relevance to the biological, formulation, and translational scientists working in the field of cancer biology and drug delivery.

- Abstract
Conveyor belts are the most effective way to transport ore in a mining complex. The ore that comes from the mining areas can be heterogeneous in size and type. As the ore needs to pass through several processing steps, online information about the ore’s type and degree of fragmentation can help improve mineral processing for both safety and efficiency. Current instrumentation systems are expensive and require frequent calibration and maintenance. This paper presents a novel intelligent instrument for online recognition of type and degree of fragmentation. A 2D LiDAR sensor and machine learning techniques were used to estimate the characteristics of iron ore particles on conveyor belts. An experiment was conducted using several types of ore and granulometry. Five machine learning models were compared using statistical methods, including analysis of average accuracy and normality and hypotheses tests. Among them, the Random Forest models achieved the highest average accuracy, 93.81% for ore type and 85.52% for the degree of fragmentation. These models were improved by a voting mechanism, resulting in a reduction of classification errors of 93.3% for ore type and 99.2% for the degree of fragmentation. These findings demonstrate potential for improving mineral processing controls and elevating operational safety within the mining sector.

- Abstract
We investigate the control challenges in grinding circuits---slow dynamics, long dead times, variable coupling--- and the controller tuning challenge, that is, the difficulty in translating operating goals into tuning goals and closed-loop performance. A tuning algorithm for DMC (dynamic matrix control), suitable for the mineral processing industry, is proposed. The tuning problem is posed as a multiobjective optimization problem, in which the tuning goals are directly related to the desired closed-loop performance of process variables. The problem is solved using a compromise optimization, which minimizes the Euclidian distance between a feasible solution and the Utopia solution. Three case studies are presented, which validate the tuning algorithm for DMC in linear and non-linear grinding circuit models. The closed-loop performance obtained with the proposed tuning algorithm is compared to the one obtained through a benchmark tuning technique from the literature. The proposed tuning method has the following features: i) it shapes the closed-loop response according to the goal definitions for linear systems; ii) it requires tailored initial guesses and search spaces to converge to a stabilizing solution in non-linear applications; and iii) it allows the user to specify the desired closed-loop performance behavior in the tuning procedure, allowing the implementation of an adequate controller for each situation.

La pareja es una estructura dinámica conformada por un sistema interactuante de dos componentes, las cuales integran un sistema social que forma la familia, núcleo de la socialización. A raíz de la pandemia del COVID-19 se ha generado cambios en la convivencia, posibilitando problemas que afectan el funcionamiento de cada uno de los componentes dentro de la propia pareja y otros sistemas. La presente investigación constó de una muestra de 325 personas convivientes pertenecientes a distintos departamentos de Bolivia. Se utilizó la Escala de Ajuste Marital de Spanier y la Escala de Problemas Conyugales construida por los investigadores; ambas mostraron óptimos niveles de confiabilidad. Se evidenció la presencia de insatisfacción debido al uso de recursos tecnológicos de comunicación, como también otro problema fue el referido a la distribución de roles en los quehaceres del hogar. Asimismo, la violencia verbal tiene una incidencia más acentuada que la violencia física, refiriéndose a que entre más violencia verbal tenga la pareja, mayor será la insatisfacción. Se detectó también la influencia de los niveles de satisfacción entre los factores de mayor relevancia son: la diferencia cultural, los celos, la enfermedad mental de la pareja, la enfermedad mental propia y finalmente el consumo de alcohol de la pareja. Se estableció como elementos favorables de la satisfacción a la inclusión del cónyuge en actividades personales y la organización del uso del dinero.

ABSTRACT In 2012, the first-generation protease inhibitors telaprevir (TVR) and boceprevir (BOC) were introduced in the Brazilian health system for treatment of chronic hepatitis C, after their approval by the National Committee for Health Technology Incorporation (CONITEC). However, these medicines were discontinued in 2015. The short period of use in therapy and their high cost require a discussion about the consequences for patients and for the health system of the early incorporation of new therapies. The article presents a qualitative analysis of the incorporation process of both medications in Brazil and the results of a multicenter study that included patients treated with BOC or TVR between January 2011 and December 2015 in five Brazilian cities. The study included 855 patients (BOC: n=247) and (TVR: n=608). The document analysis showed that CONITEC’s decision to incorporate BOC and TVR was based on results of phase III clinical trials that compared sustained virologic response (SVR) rates of patients treated with BOC and TVR with rates of those that received placebo. However, these studies included a low percentage of cirrhotic patients. The SVR rates observed in this multicenter study were worse than clinical trials pointed out (BOC: 45.6%; TVR: 51.8%), but similar to those achieved with previously adopted therapies. The discontinuation rate due to adverse events was (BOC: 15.4%; TVR: 12.7%). Based on these unsatisfactory results, the study brings a discussion that goes beyond the therapy outcomes, exploring the incorporation of these high-cost medicines and the related decision-making process, contributing to future decisions in medicine policies and in the treatment of chronic hepatitis C.
