Sediments from Lake Lubińskie, western Poland, were investigated to determine the limnological responses to environmental changes during the last 3,000 years. To identify the mechanisms driving the eutrophication in the lake, we distinguished six lithozones along with five major varve microfacies. An age-depth model based on varve counting and radiometric measurements was established resulting in final age of 946 +113/ -144 before the Common Era at the bottom of the composite profile. Varve microfacies as well as geochemical, pollen, and diatom data was used to determine major phases of landscape and lake ecosystem transformations. Our data shows that until the 4th century of the Common Era, conditions in the lake were stable. Several shifts occurred before the first millennium, when changes were observed in every proxy as a response to the increased agricultural activity in the area as well as climate fluctuations. The highest frequency of shifts was observed from the 17th century onward and mirrored further deforestation (decrease in arboreal pollen), accelerated erosion (increase in Ti), increased nutrient delivery (increased total nitrogen content), and better ventilation of the water body (higher Mn/Fe ratio). Simultaneously, the lake became more eutrophic as a response to changes in the lake catchment area. An isotopic monitoring was undertaken in 2012-2014 at Lake Żabińskie (Mazurian Lakeland, NE Poland). The aim was to identify the factors and processes controlling an isotopic composition of the lake water and to explore the mechanism responsible for recording the climatic signal in stable isotope composition of deposited carbonates. δ18O and δ2H in the precipitation, lake water column, inflows and outflow, δ18O and δ13C in the carbonate fraction of sediments trapped in the water column were recorded with monthly resolution. A relationship between δ18O and δ2H in local precipitation was used to estimate the local meteoric water line. The dataset obtained for the water enabled to identify the modification of the water’s isotopic composition due to evaporation, connected with seasonal lake water stratification and mixing patterns. Statistically significant correlation coefficients suggest that the δ18O of the carbonate fraction in the sediment traps depends on the δ18O of rainfall water and on air temperature. The fractionation coefficient α shows that in summer months the carbonate precipitation process is closest to equilibrium. As expected for an exorheic lake, no significant correlation was observed between δ18O and δ13C in precipitated carbonate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Radiocarbon and 210Pb were measured on the uppermost 40cm of a Wardenaar peat core retrieved from a Baltic raised bog at Słowińskie Błota (Pomerania, North Poland). This site is the subject of ongoing multiproxy studies covering the last 1300years. Radiocarbon age model was constructed on the basis of 14 AMS dates obtained on selected Sphagnum spp. fragments, with use of P_Sequence tool. 'Little Ice Age' (LIA) climatic deteriorations have been abundantly documented in various archives such as ice, lake sediments and peat bog deposits. Palaeoecological analyses of peat samples have identified these climatic deteriorations using a range of techniques, for example palynology, plant macrofossils, testate amoebae or carbon isotopic analyses. The use of inorganic geochemistry and the reconstruction of dust fluxes has remained a challenge in tracing the nature of LIA climatic changes. Although the idea of enhanced erosion conditions and storminess is commonly discussed, the conditions for dust deposition in peatlands over Europe during the LIAare rarely favourable, because the natural forest cover over Europe was much more important than nowadays, preventing dust deposition. This intense forest canopy masks the deposition of dust in peatlands. In northern Poland, near the Baltic shore, the Slowińskie Błota area was deforested around AD 1100, ie, just before the LIA, and therefore constitutes a key area for the reconstruction of LIA climatic change. With the support of a well-constrained chronology, climatic fluctuations are recorded in an ombrotrophic bog using inorganic geochemistry, plant macrofossils and carbon isotopic analyses. The reconstruction of LIA climatic changes is in good agreement with other records from Poland and NE Europe. However, a c. 50-year discrepancy can be observed between various records. Abstract: Tracing past climate signals from Lake Baikal sediments with a “multi-annual” resolution by conventional techniques is a difficult challenge since the sedimentation rates from Termination I up to the present range from 0.004 to 0.17 mm/year. In this paper, climate signals are reconstructed from three continuous sediment records from Vydrino Shoulder and Posolsky Bank in the Southern Basin, and Continent Ridge in the Northern Basin. For each coring site, a calendar age model was constructed using calibrated radiocarbon ages. The magnetic susceptibility is used to better constrain the age models over OIS4 to OIS1. The cores have been hardened using polymerized technique in order to allow the easy cut of thin sections that contain evidence for narrow biogenic/clayey laminations. The grey scale taken from the thin sections is used here as a high-resolution proxy record of diatom/clay ratio. The grey density values are qualitatively interpreted against the sediment components by optical microscopy from the thin sections. In the Northern Basin, the Continent station provides the best age model and sediment resolution over the Termination I period. In particular, four optima (i.e. Bölling, Alleröd, Atlantic, and Subboreal) are indicated by substantial increases of the grey scale, whereas cold periods like the Younger Dryas correspond to lower grey scale values. We emphasize that the short-term variations in the grey scale at 20 μm resolution could correspond to short climate responses in Lake Baikal sediments. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The idea of creating radiocarbon database came up in late 80's. In this time the staff of the Gliwice Radiocarbon Laboratory started developing the local database GdRDB that should contain all dates of samples measured in this laboratory. This first database had a simple structure - only one file. Later modification of GdRDB database in 1994 introduced changes in its structure, and the modified database had seven files. The modification was made in order to adapt GdRDB to databases already existing (in Japan, Great Britain and Yugoslavia) and to make it match the standard established by the International Radiocarbon Database (IRDB). The new database system was developed in the Gliwice Radiocarbon Laboratory in 2002. This system consists of five relational databases containing all information about submitters and institutions, samples, sites and the dating process. The access to these databases and management of data is provided through an application called Register of Samples Editor (RoSE). The RoS system is supplied with the Data Analyse application enabling analyses of database content and Web Assistant programme, which generates web pages containing information about dated archival samples. This paper reviews the reconstruction of European Atlantic storm events with the contribution of a new stormy reconstruction in its central part. Three marsh environments on the island of Yeu were chosen to identify disturbing storm events from the Mid- to Late Holocene with vibracore sampling, radiocarbon dating and sedimentary analysis. Nine probable intervals of high energy deposition in these low-transport-activity environments are estimated: 600–500, near 1590, 2100–1950, 2850–2350, 3500–3270, 5400–5370, 6650–6510, near 7000 and between 7670 and 7470 calibrated years before present (cal y BP). By comparison with sedimentological paleostorm studies, we confirm six European Atlantic storm events estimated at near 600–300, 1700–1100, 2900–2500, 3500–3300, 5500–5100 and 7700–7100 cal y BP, corresponding to worldwide Holocene cooling climatic periods. A comparison with other storminess reviews of worldwide main stormy coasts shows that Holocene storms can increase during global cooling periods in the northern hemisphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Red deer (Cervus elaphus) is one of the species that is rather wide spread and survived across Europe over the Holocene. The analyses of carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes in bone collagen of ungulate remains have been applied in paleoecological studies as environmental and dietary indicators. In this study we present the carbon and nitrogen stable isotope compositions of previously radiocarbon-dated red deer bone samples (N = 68) found in Central, Southern and Eastern Europe and Asia and aligned to one of two species: European red deer (Cervus elaphus) and wapiti (Cervus canadensis). We showed that the values of carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios of European red deer and wapiti overlapped. Among all analysed independent factors (determined for the locality and time period relevant for each of the analysed samples), the variability of δ 13C values in European red deer dated to the Holocene is best explained by forest cover and mean July temperature, and variability of δ 15N values by the mean July temperature, annual precipitation and altitude. Additionally, combining the results of the present study with isotopic data on European red deer collected from published sources, we revealed that the values of δ 13C and of δ 15N in C. elaphus bones changed according to environmental oscillations that took place in Europe over the last 50 000 years. We concluded that red deer shifted their feeding habitats in relation to changing environmental conditions, for example, forest expansion during the climate warming, and in the mid to later Holocene in response to deforestation caused by human activity and the spread of agriculture. We also found out that red deer reacted in varied ways to changing local conditions in different regions of Europe. In the rich of archaeological sites dated from the late Palaeolithic to the Modern Period region of the Serteyka River, deposits of an extensive accumulative fan were studied in detail. In the lower sector of the present-day Serteyka River valley, the strict chronology and depositional conditions of an extensive accumulative fan deposits were studied in detail. An important part of the project has been also: a checking of usefulness of luminescence, radiocarbon and lead methods of dating in determination of the age of inorganic deposits accumulation The 14C, optically stimulated luminescence (OSL), and 210Pb dating methods were used to determine the fan's deposition age. Then, we discussed the depositional conditions of the accumulative fan by the textural, geochemical, and palaeoecological analysis. The use of 14C and 210Pb methods of dating allows for elaboration of a reliable model of the evolution of slope processes occurring from the 2nd half of 17th c. AD to 2nd half of 19th c. AD (i.e. during the younger part of the Little Ice Age). It was a period of human induced deforestation, as confirmed by the first results of palaeobotanical analyses. In addition, four OSL dates have been obtained, but the acquired age significantly exceeded previous expectations. Three dates indicate the Neolithic period, and a chronological inversion of OSL dates can be seen. This may be due to incomplete bleaching of the sand grains during transport, which indicates that the material being transported had a relatively large volume. The lower deluvium of the accumulation fan is formed by the drainage of hydrated sediment (mudflows). Summarizing, slope sediments can be extremely difficult material for absolute dating. This may be due to the redeposition of the material, the hiatuses in deposition and incomplete bleaching of quartz grains. In the case of 14C (AMS) dating, the dependence is on the presence of plant macroremains within the studied material. In the case of slope deposits, there is a very high probability of the redeposition of organic material. Lead dating, on the other hand, has a small chronological range. Moreover, the dating of inorganic sediments with this method poses many problems, including of a methodological nature. In the tested accumulative fan, as a result of insufficient grain whitening and the short chronological range of the 210Pb method, the 14C method was the main analysis determining the age of inorganic sediments. Fens are underestimated carbon sinks. Knowledge about their role in the sequestration of CO2 in the past is limited. The research reported here focused on identifying long-term carbon accumulation rates (CARs) in a drained fen (Bagno Bruch) and a waterlogged fen (Bagno Mikołeska) in southern Poland. On the basis of 210Pb and AMS 14C dates and age–depth modeling, 7000- and 2000-year records of changes in bulk composition and carbon and sulfur content are presented and discussed. Strong human impact is detected, especially in Bagno Bruch. However, minor climatic signals linked to the ‘Little Ice Age’ and to the influence of wind-blown sands are also evident. The sand may have influenced the plant composition, peat accumulation rates (PARs), and CARs, in addition to the bulk composition at Bagno Mikołeska. The mean value of the CAR in the youngest peat layers spanning the last 200 years is generally lower in two cores from Bagno Bruch (c. 85 and 86 g/m2/yr) than in two cores from Bagno Mikołeska (c. 140 and 142 g/m2/yr). The fens are characterized by higher CARs compared with boreal peatlands. The reproducibility of the CAR values is the most promising result, suggesting the low mobility of 210Pb and the reliability of this method in assessing the chronology of fens. The present phylogeographic pattern of red deer in Eurasia is not only a result of the contraction of their distribution range into glacial refugia and postglacial expansion, but probably also an effect of replacement of some red deer s.l. mtDNA lineages by others during the last 50 000 years. To better recognize this process, we analysed 501 sequences of mtDNA cytochrome b , including 194 ancient and 75 contemporary samples newly obtained for this study. The inclusion of 161 radiocarbon-dated samples enabled us to study the phylogeny in a temporal context and conduct divergence-time estimation and molecular dating. Depending on methodology, our estimate of divergence between Cervus elaphus and Cervus canadensis varied considerably (370 000 or 1.37 million years BP, respectively). The divergence times of genetic lineages and haplogroups corresponded to large environmental changes associated with stadials and interstadials of the Late Pleistocene. Due to the climatic oscillations, the distribution of C. elaphus and C. canadensis fluctuated in north–south and east–west directions. Some haplotypes dated to pre-Last Glacial Maximum periods were not detected afterwards, representing possibly extinct populations. The paper reports the results of a palynological study of a newly exposed section in the peat sediments of Bezděkov site and its correlation with the previous palaeobotanical studies. The main goal was to elucidate the stratigraphic position and paleogeographic development of fossil peat bog and its environment in the Protected Landscape Area Žďárské vrchy and Železné hory in the Bohemian-Moravian Uplands. The development of peatbog vegetation, as shown by the pollen analysis and radiocarbon dating, took place in the Holocene. Pollen analyses provide evidence for occurrences of wetland assemblages with huge representation of alder wood in all the part of succession, followed by willow near the Cerhovka Brook. Alnus and Abies were the dominant trees during all the time. The deciduous forests consist of elm ( Ulmus), oak ( Quercus), lime tree ( Tilia), maple ( Acer) and hazel ( Corylus). The mosaic picture of woodland and wetland, which covered this landscape during the Upper Holocene, contrasts with the present day monotonous open lowland. Aim: The Expansion‐Contraction model has been used to explain the responses of species to climatic changes. During periods of unfavourable climatic conditions, species retreat to refugia from where they may later expand. This paper focuses on the palaeoecology of red deer over the past 54 ka across Europe and the Urals, to reveal patterns of change in their range and explore the role of environmental conditions in determining their distribution. Location: Europe and western Asia to 63°E. Taxon: Red deer (Cervus elaphus). Methods: We collected 984 records of radiocarbon‐dated red deer subfossils from the Late Pleistocene and the Holocene, including 93 original dates. For each deer sample we compiled climatic and biome type data for the corresponding time intervals. Results: During the last 54 ka changes in red deer range in Europe and the Urals were asynchronous and differed between western and eastern Europe and western Asia due to different environmental conditions in those regions. The range of suitable areas for deer during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) was larger than previously thought and covered vast regions not only in southern but also in western and eastern Europe. Throughout the period investigated the majority of specimens inhabited forests in the temperate climatic zone. The contribution of forests in deer localities significantly decreased during the last 4 ka, due to deforestation of Europe caused by humans. Mean January temperature was the main limiting factor for species distribution. Over 90% of the samples were found in areas where mean January temperature was above −10°C. Main conclusions: Red deer response to climatic oscillations are in agreement with the Expansion‐Contraction model but in contradiction to the statement of only the southernmost LGM refugia of the species. The climate variability and related sea-level changes during the Holocene are still under discussion, especially in a regional context. Very little information comes from the southern and south-eastern Baltic coast. The aim of the paper is to gain insight on the history of regional environmental changes, particularly sea-level and storminess, and their driving forces. The investigations were located on a peatland on the coast of Puck Lagoon (Gulf of Gdańsk, southern Baltic Sea). The analysis of peat core comprised: radiocarbon dating, analysis of stable isotopes 18O and 13C and chemical components, as well as palynological and diatomic studies. Results showed the 1.0 m peat section accumulated over 1500 years, with a time resolution of 100 years per sample. The average water level in the Puck Lagoon rose by ca. 0.85 m during the last 1500 years in a cyclic mode, with a period cycle of ca. 600–550 years and an amplitude not exceeding 0.5 m. The accelerated sea level rise and frequent storminess occurred during the first half of the Dark Ages (1500−1300 years b2k) and LIA (750−450 years b2k) and since the beginning of the 20th century. Recognized environmental changes are well correlated with both temperature changes in the North Atlantic and changes in total solar irradiance, suggesting synchronous Northern Hemisphere-wide fluctuations. Lake Baikal, lying in a rift zone in southeastern Siberia, is the world's oldest, deepest, and most voluminous lake that began to form over 30 million years ago. Cited as the "most outstanding example of a freshwater ecosystem" and designated a World Heritage Site in 1996 due to its high level of endemicity, the lake and its ecosystem have become increasingly threatened by both climate change and anthropogenic disturbance. Here, we present a record of nutrient cycling in the lake, derived from the silicon isotope composition of diatoms, which dominate aquatic primary productivity. Using historical records from the region, we assess the extent to which natural and anthropogenic factors have altered biogeochemical cycling in the lake over the last 2,000 y.We show that rates of nutrient supply from deep waters to the photic zone have dramatically increased since the mid-19th century in response to changing wind dynamics, reduced ice cover, and their associated impact on limnological processes in the lake. With stressors linked to untreated sewage and catchment development also now impacting the near-shore region of Lake Baikal, the resilience of the lake's highly endemic ecosystem to ongoing and future disturbance is increasingly uncertain. Spring-fed fen deposits (peat-tufa sequences) from northern Poland were investigated for Holocene environmental reconstruction (climate and hydrology) using multi-proxy analysis (lithofacies, molluscs, pollen, plant macrofossils, geochemistry, and stable oxygen- and carbon-isotopes). The main aims of these studies were: (1) comparison of several similar sites with the same type of groundwater supply and sedimentation on a widespread space scale, (2) detailed reconstruction of their long-term development, assessing their sensitivity to climate change, (3) verification of the synchronicity of the record of different proxies in distant sites in the context of Holocene climate changes in relation to specific well-known global and/or regional climate events (so-called Bond events), and (4) discussion on permafrost degradation as a driver of spring-fed fens development. Based on our palaeogeographical data, we have distinguished an asynchronicity of the beginning of the development of spring-fed fens in the eastern and western parts of the studied region that is associated with different times of ascending groundwater supply unblocking after complete permafrost degradation. Therein, asynchronicity of permafrost degradation was brought about by multiple climatic, geological and structural conditions. Our results also indicate significant differences in the trends of succession (ecological and lithological) caused by the geographical location of the studied sites. Asynchronicity of the occurrence of wet and dry phases, as well as significant differences in their duration were noted. This depended upon the influence of oceanic (western part) or continental climates (eastern part). Warm and humid oceanic climate promoted the domination and longer duration of wet phases (especially in the Eo- and early Mesoholocene), while the harsh continental climate promoted the more frequent occurrence of dry phases, with short episodes of increased humidity. From the middle Mesoholocene, this marked regional diversification becomes less pronounced. Results also allowed for the recognition of several palaeoclimatic events on a regional scale. Four main cold episodes (Bond events 8–5): during LG/H transition (11.5 ky cal BP), Eo- (∼10.25 ky cal BP, ∼9.4 ky cal BP) and at the beginning of the Mesoholocene (∼8.2 ky cal BP) are well-documented by multiple proxies at all study sites. Other cold episodes (Bond events 4–0) are slightly less documented and are not clear for interpretation. The Cyrilka Cave is the second longest pseudokarst cave and the longest crevice-type cave in Czechia. Developed within the headscarp area of a deep-seated landslide, the cave became a focus of scientific research in recent years when new passages were discovered. Structural analysis provided a general tectonic plan of the cave, as well as more detailed data on geometry and kinematics of the relaxed rock massif. The primary structure of NNE- to ENE-striking bedding is broken by a system of NNE-striking fissures interconnected by two continuous ENE-striking dextral fracture zones. Abundant signs of recent sinistral strike-slips within the rock massif represent a bold structural feature of the cave. Along with DEM imaging and a detailed survey of the cave, 2-D and 3-D ERT measurements completed an image of the main predispositions and revealed the internal structure of the slope deformation. These measures also detected unknown crevices above the existing headscarp, which indicate the retrograde evolution of the landslide. Methodologically, we used the 3-D electrical resistivity tomography in the incoherent sedimentary flysch rocks for the first time. Based on radiocarbon dating of the stalactite core, the minimum age of the cave is up to 19,900 ± 280 cal BP, which is the oldest age detected in the area of the Outer Flysch Carpathians so far; we thoroughly discuss further indirect evidence indicating a probable Late Pleistocene age of the cave. Short-term climate oscillations known form the Last Glacial Termination (LGT) have been firstly recognized in the Greenland ice cores as well as in the deep-marine and lacustrine profiles. Such climate changes have also been marked in terrestrial depositional environments, particularly in the fluvio-aeolian succession of the European Sand Belt (ESB). This is due to the high sensitivity of this depositional environment to changes in environmental conditions. However, unlike, for example, annually laminated lake sediments, dating the chronology of these changes encounters great difficulty. These are due to the peculiarities of sedimentary processes (especially aeolian), punctuated by periods of stabilization and development of soil covers. Comparison of previously accepted stratigraphic models of fluvio-aeolian succession with recent research results indicated the need for a new approach to the question of the chronology and rank of these processes. Therefore, a large-scale research project in the central part of the ESB was launched in 2019 to determine the chronology of sedimentary and soil processes and how they relate to global climate change during the LGT. To this end, detailed sedimentological, paleobiological, soil and geochemical studies have been carried out in more than 50 dune profiles. More than 300 luminescence and about 70 14C results have been madefor the studied sedimentary successions. The results obtained so far indicate that the response of depositional environments and their evolution creates a more complicated pattern than previously assumed. First of all, the beginning of intensive aeolian deposition as early as the turn of the oldest Dryas and Bølling and 2 distinct phases of dune formation during the warming of the Allerød interstadial are marked. More variability in aeolian accumulation and soil-forming processes is recorded in the Younger Dryas. All this is compounded by several local factors (permafrost disappearance, river incision, bedrock lithology) that modified the response of the fluvio-aeolian environment to climatic oscillations. The use of sufficiently dense sampling for OSL and radiocarbon dating made it possible to develop a new stratigraphic model, despite date inversions appearing in some profiles. This confirms the advantage of using both dating methods in the same profiles to cross-check them and eliminate reliably questionable results from further stratigraphic considerations. Loess formations in Poland display a close relationship with cooling and warming trends of the Northern Hemisphere during the Pleistocene. Loess sequences sensitively record regional palaeoclimatic and palaeoecological changes. The Złota loess profile (21°39'E, 50°39'N) provides a unique opportunity to reconstruct climate conditions in the past in this part of Poland. This continuous sequence of loess and palaeosol deposits allows to distinguish between warmer and more humid climate which is favourable for soil development and much colder and dry periods which are conducive to loess accumulation. The silty and sandy aeolian material originates mainly from weathered rock surfaces affected by frost shattering or from glaciofluvial/fluvial deposits of river flood plains. In Poland, loess and loess-like formations occur in the southern part of the country, mostly in the south polish uplands, i.e. in the Lublin, Sandomierz, and Cracow Uplands. We used different techniques to establish a chronological framework for this site. 21 samples for luminescence dating were collected from the investigated loess profile in Złota. Infrared post-IR IRSL dating method was applied to the polymineral fine grains (4-11µm). The dating results are accompanied by detailed analyses of the geochemical composition, organic carbon and carbonate. Also, analysis of magnetic susceptibility and grain-size distribution were investigated. The Danube delta is one of the few large deltas in the world the evolution of which has involved numerous and varied episodes within a complex framework of interactivity between river sediment supply, allochthonous sediments supplied by longshore currents, marine dispersing forces, vertical movements (neotectonics, sediment compaction) and sea level. The resulting complex morphology comprises diversified landscapes varying from labyrinthic net of channels and lakes (fluvial delta) to massive tracts of monotonous reed marshes, large lagoons divided by barriers, or beach-ridge plains accommodating large transgressive dunefields (maritime delta). Whilst previous studies have focused on various sectors of the Danube delta, the current paper proposes for the first time an integral reconstruction of delta evolution based on existing and new sedimentological and morphological analyses and absolute ages (AMS 14 C and OSL), enabling a comprehensive synthesis in terms of both evolutionary phases and growth patterns. A chronological framework was established for all the deltaic lobes and beach-ridge plains, highlighting the relationship between formation timespan, growth rates, and the resultant morphology. This work unveils the early stage of delta formation, including the reconstruction of delta front advancement into Danube Bay (Old Danube lobe: prior to 7.5–5.5 ka) and initial spit/barrier development (6.7/6.5–5.8 ka). Inception of the bayhead delta started > 1000 yr before the relative stabilization of sea level and of the initial spit formation. The original fluvial delta plain topography is now buried at a depth of 4–6 m depth below the present topography (representing the current stage of fluvial aggradation), as a result of subsidence and sea-level rise. Regarding the maritime delta, six large open-coast lobes developed in the last six millennia, of which four were formed by the Sf. Gheorghe branch, attesting the long uninterrupted activity of this branch, whereas the other two were created respectively by the Sulina and the Chilia branches. The evolution of each lobe is derived from successive (chronological) shoreline positions and discussed in relation with changes in Danube discharge. Special attention has been paid to their growth stages and progradation rates. For the southern delta, we bring in new arguments for an active southern distributary (the Dunavăţ, derived from the Sf. Gheorghe branch) that formed successive open-coast lobes between 2.6 and 1.3 ka. The forest-steppe ecotone in southern Siberia is highly sensitive to climate change; global warming is expected to push the ecotone northwards, at the same time resulting in degradation of the underlying permafrost. To gain a deeper understanding of long-term forest-steppe carbon dynamics, we use a highly resolved, multiproxy, palaeolimnological approach, based on sediment records from Lake Baikal. We reconstruct proxies that are relevant to understanding carbon dynamics including carbon mass accumulation rates ( CMAR; g C m−2 yr−1) and isotope composition of organic matter ( δ13 CTOC). Forest-steppe dynamics were reconstructed using pollen, and diatom records provided measures of primary production from near- and off-shore communities. We used a generalized additive model ( GAM) to identify significant change points in temporal series, and by applying generalized linear least-squares regression modelling to components of the multiproxy data, we address (1) What factors influence carbon dynamics during early Holocene warming and late Holocene cooling? (2) How did carbon dynamics respond to abrupt sub-Milankovitch scale events? and (3) What is the Holocene carbon storage budget for Lake Baikal. CMAR values range between 2.8 and 12.5 g C m−2 yr−1. Peak burial rates (and greatest variability) occurred during the early Holocene, associated with melting permafrost and retreating glaciers, while lowest burial rates occurred during the neoglacial. Significant shifts in carbon dynamics at 10.3, 4.1 and 2.8 kyr bp provide compelling evidence for the sensitivity of the region to sub-Milankovitch drivers of climate change. We estimate that 1.03 Pg C was buried in Lake Baikal sediments during the Holocene, almost one-quarter of which was buried during the early Holocene alone. Combined, our results highlight the importance of understanding the close linkages between carbon cycling and hydrological processes, not just temperatures, in southern Siberian environments. Pollen, non-pollen palynomorphs, charcoal and geochemical analyses of sediments from Lakes Salęt and Ruskowiejskie (NE Poland) were used to reconstruct vegetation changes in the former Galindia territory (Old Prussia) related to human activity and the climatic instability of the medieval period. Among archaeologists and historians, there is a widespread opinion that the permanent transformations of the environment in Prussia (south-eastern Baltic region) began not earlier than after its conquest by the Teutonic Order and resulted from its economic activity and intensive colonization. The impact of previous inhabitants of this land on the environment has been considered as definitely weak. Our results provide entirely contrasting evidence and demonstrate that strong and permanent deforestation started as early as in the early 11th century AD, in the pre-Teutonic Order time, and were associated with the economic activity of the Prussian Galinditae tribes. In this paper, we also discuss a possible interpretation of the medieval distribution patterns of Quercus. We assume that human activity catalysed and amplified both its spreading process and decline, primarily driven by the ‘Little Ice Age’ climatic deterioration. Our palynological results indicate the significant spread of Picea from ca. AD 1000, which we interpret as reflecting hydrological and climatic changes. Moreover, we hypothesize that the spread of Carpinus in the early medieval period (11th–13th centuries), which occurred in connection with more intense human activity, was largely because of woodland pasturing. Rapid ecosystem transitions and adverse effects on ecosystem services as responses to combined climate and human impacts are of major concern. Yet few long-term (i.e. >60 years) quantitative observational time series exist, particularly for ecosystems that have a long history of human intervention. Here, we combine three major environmental pressures (land use, nutrients and erosion) with quantitative summer and winter climate reconstructions and climate model simulations to explore the system dynamics, resilience and the role of disturbance regimes in varved eutrophic Lake Żabińskie (NE Poland) since AD 1000. The comparison between these independent sources of information allows us to establish the coherence and points of disagreements between such data sets. We find that climate reconstructions capture noticeably natural forced climate variability, while internal variability is the dominant source of variability during most parts of the last millennium at the regional scale, precisely at which climate models seem to underestimate forced variability. Using different multivariate analyses and change point detection techniques, we identify ecosystem changes through time and shifts between rather stable states and highly variable ones. Prior to AD 1600, the lake ecosystem was characterised by high stability and resilience against observed natural climate variability. During this period, the anthropogenic fingerprint was small; the lake ecosystem was buffered against the combined human and natural disturbance. In contrast, lake-ecosystem conditions started to fluctuate across a broad range of states after AD 1600. The period AD 1745-1886 represents the phase with the strongest human disturbance of the catchment-lake ecosystem. During that time, the range of natural climate variability did not increase. Analyses of the frequency of change points in the multi-proxy data set suggest that the last 400 years were highly variable and increased vulnerability of the ecosystem to the anthropogenic disturbances. Radiocarbon-dated spring-fed fen deposits from the Komarów site (Volhynia Upland, SE Poland) with its multi-proxy data (macrofossils, molluscs, geochemistry, pollen, stable isotopes of oxygen and carbon) enable us (1) to distinguish four main stages of fen evolution, which reflected a distinct variability of water supply conditions and (2) to reconstruct the Holocene humidity–temperature changes. The beginning of peat–tufa deposition took place in a Boreal phase, after a significant cool fluctuation of climate occurring ca. 9.4 ka cal. BP. We suggest that climate was the most important factor conditioning the development of the spring-fed fen. Permafrost degradation, and then wet periods, intensified the activity of ascending springs. The impact of humans was possible since the Neolithic period and increased during the Middle Ages: therefore, the anthropogenic influence could have partially overlapped with the regional tendencies of climate changes. Autogenic development of deposit succession in the studied fen was definitely conditioned by hydrological changes induced by climate. Based on the multi-proxy data, 12 cold events of different ranks were identified. They are also recorded in other Polish and European sites. A record of distinct variability of depositional conditions at ca. 9.4, 8.2, 5.9, 4.6, 2.8, 1.4 and 0.55 ka cal. BP corresponds to quasi-periodical global climate changes in the Holocene named the Bond events. In this study, we investigated morphologically and geochemically a skull from an open pit situated on the Călineasa-Şesu Gârzii Plateau, Bihor Mountains. The study presents the first 14C dating and stable isotope composition of bison skeletal remains from the Romanian Carpathians. The result of 14C determination yielded two relevant maxima: one is around AD 1550 and the second around AD 1645. The data indicate that the investigated bison died during the ‘Little Ice Age’ (LIA), approximately 200 years before the last ones were hunted to extinction. Stable isotope composition of carbon from bison tooth enamel suggests that the bison diet consisted mainly of C3 grasses, compatible with a high-altitude habitat, vegetation distribution and low mobility. Oxygen isotope composition of both phosphate and carbonate groups of tooth enamel indicates that the bison drank from stagnant water sources, such as lakes or puddles formed from rain water. This further suggests low mobility of the bison as well, as the presence of such small stagnant water sources is characteristic even today for the plateau. Calculated oxygen isotope compositions of rain and drinking water at the time the bison lived indicate a lower relative humidity, around 60–70% at that period of LIA when the bison lived, which is lower than today’s humidity of 80%. Pollen, non-pollen palynomorphs (NPPs), diatoms, and geochemistry of lake sediments with partially preserved annual lamination were used to reconstruct post-glacial environmental changes of northern Poland in the Baltic region. The main stages in the lake's evolution indicate the following: (1) eutrophic conditions in the final stage of the Lateglacial, (2) very low trophy and strongly changeable water levels in the early Holocene, (3) slowly rising trophy through the mid- and late Holocene enabling persistence of the oligotrophic state of the lake up to c. AD 1450, (4) strong cultural eutrophication of the lake in the recent period (c. 150 years), and (5) maximum Ca content in the early Holocene followed by a gradual decline to minimum values in recent time. Distinct, concurrent shifts in limnological proxies and tree pollen accumulation rates (PARs) enabled the identification of several potential Holocene cool climatic events of different magnitudes and durations. Strong reduction in Tetraëdron minimum and declines in tree PARs illustrate limitation of physiological processes in plants, which could result from shorter growing seasons and lower summer temperatures and insolation. Higher precipitation of Fe and Mn indicates more intensive weathering in the catchment, while peaks in Fe/Mn ratio and concurrent drops in Ca content suggest at least seasonal anoxia, which could result from a longer duration of ice cover and shorter periods of mixing. The data seem to display striking conformity of the main cooling events with the “Bond cycles” (Bond et al., 1997, 2001), but also indicate a more variable pattern that may reflect traces of a more complex cyclicity of climatic shifts. Metallurgical activities have been undertaken in northern South America (NSA) for millennia. However, it is still unknown how far atmospheric emissions from these activities have been transported. Since the timing of metallurgical activities is currently estimated from scarce archaeological discoveries, the availability of reliable and continuous records to refine the timing of past metal deposition in South America is essential, as it provides an alternative to discontinuous archives, as well as evidence for global trace metal transport. We show in a peat record from Tierra del Fuego that anthropogenic metals likely have been emitted into the atmosphere and transported from NSA to southern South America (SSA) over the last 4200 yrs. These findings are supported by modern time back-trajectories from NSA to SSA. We further show that apparent anthropogenic Cu and Sb emissions predate any archaeological evidence for metallurgical activities. Lead and Sn were also emitted into the atmosphere as by-products of Inca and Spanish metallurgy, whereas local coal-gold rushes and the industrial revolution contributed to local contamination. We suggest that the onset of pre-Hispanic metallurgical activities is earlier than previously reported from archaeological records and that atmospheric emissions of metals were transported from NSA to SSA. The composite sediment profile (12.39 m) from Lake Szurpiły (NE Poland) represents an annually laminated organic-carbonaceous gyttja occasionally interrupted by turbidites and massive sand layers. This study focuses on the 7.58-m long and almost continuously varved top section of the profile, which produced a 8410-year long varve chronology with a cumulative counting error of ± 1.24%. The age-depth model was established by multiple microscopic varve counts and improved by the application of independent radiometric dating methods (210Pb,137Cs). Ten additional AMS14C dates are consistent with varve counts. In some sections, missing varves were identified as a result of erosional processes related to turbidite deposition. Varve thickness ranges from less than 0.1 to 13.7 mm (mean: 0.83 mm; std: 0.75 mm) with highest variability during the last 1500 years. The accuracy of the varve chronology depends mostly on the regularity of the varve thickness and the distinctness of varve boundaries, and was not influenced by the varve thickness itself. Even though manual and semiautomated varve counting show similar results of the total amount of varves, with the difference of only 0.56%, the comparison between those two methods in intervals of 200 years indicates potential problems, especially for sections with complex lamination and turbidites. We found that semiautomatic varve counting overestimated the varve boundaries in sections with erosive turbidites. Abstract: A palaeolimnological study of Lake Khall was undertaken to reconstruct impacts from five thousand years of climate change and human activity in the Ol''khon region of Lake Baikal. Taiga biome dominated regional landscapes, although significant compositional turnover occurred due to the expansion of eurythermic and drought resistant Scots pine. Climate during the mid-Holocene was wetter than the present, and Lake Khall was fresh, with abundant molluscs. By 4.4 cal ka BP, sedimentary geochemistry indicated a gradual change in lake water chemistry with an increase in lake salinity up to the present day, most likely controlled by groundwater influences. Vegetation turnover rate was highest between 2.75 and 2.48 cal ka BP, with the onset of drier, more continental climate, which resulted in an influx of aeolian particles to the lake. This abrupt shift was coincident with ice rafted debris event (IRD-2) in North Atlantic sediments and an attenuation of the East Asian summer monsoon. A second arid period occurred shortly afterwards (2.12–1.87 cal ka BP) which resulted in the decline in ostracod numbers, especially Candona sp. A rather more quiescent, warmer period followed, between 1.9 and 0.7 cal ka BP, with very little change in vegetation composition, and low amounts of detrital transfer from catchment to the lake. Peak reconstructed temperatures (and low amounts of annual precipitation) were concurrent with the Medieval Climate Anomaly. Between 0.77 and 0.45 cal ka BP, climate in the Ol''khon region became colder and wetter, although Lake Khall did not become fresher. Cold, wet conditions are seen at other sites around Lake Baikal, and therefore represent a regional response to the period concurrent with the Little Ice Age and IRD-0. After AD 1845 the region warms, and Pediastrum appears in the lake in high abundances for the first time. Abstract: Four sediment cores were collected in 2008 from the Misten ombrotrophic peat bog in the Northern part of the Hautes Fagnes Plateau in Belgium. Total mercury (Hg) concentrations were analyzed to investigate the intra-site variability in atmospheric Hg deposition over the past 1500years. Mercury concentrations in the four cores ranged from 16 to 1100μgkg−1, with the maxima between 840 and 1100μgkg−1. A chronological framework was established using radiometric 210Pb and 14C dating of two cores (M1 and M4). Pollen horizons from these two cores were correlated with data from two additional cores, providing a consistent dating framework between all the sites. There was good agreement between atmospheric Hg accumulation rates in the four cores over time based on precise age dating and pollen chronosequences. The average Hg accumulation rate before the influence of human activities (from 500 to 1300AD) was 1.8±1μgm−2 y−1 (2SD). Maximum Hg accumulation rates ranged from 90 to 200μgm−2 y−1 between 1930 and 1980AD. During the European–North American Industrial Revolution, the mean Hg accumulation rate exceeded the pre-Industrial values by a factor of 63. Based on comparisons with historical records of anthropogenic activities in Europe and Belgium, the predominant regional anthropogenic sources of Hg during and after the Industrial Revolution were coal burning and smelter Hg emissions. Abstract: New results of carbon isotopic composition from tree rings have been analyzed. Δ14C and δ 13C data, representing the isotopic composition of carbon in “clean air”, were obtained from annual rings of a pine tree (Pinus sylvestris) taken in the Niepołomice area, 25km east Kraków, Poland. All samples were processed to extract α-cellulose, and the radiocarbon concentration in each annual ring was measured using AMS at the University of Nagoya. Stable isotopic composition of carbon was determined using isotope ratio mass spectrometry. The dataset covers the growth period between 1960 and 2003. The average difference between radiocarbon concentrations in Niepołomice and the North Hemisphere zone 1 (NH zone 1) for the period between 1960 and 1999 is 3.5±1.6‰. These data are compared with previously presented results from the city of Kraków, where a local decrease in 14C concentration was observed due to local CO2 emission from fossil fuel use. The differences in observed 14C concentrations were used to estimate a magnitude of the local Suess effect in Kraków. Based on mass balance equations for CO2 14C concentrations, it was possible to calculate the CO2 concentration associated with fossil fuel emission (C foss) into the atmosphere. The highest values of C foss were recorded in the years 1986 (11.9±1.4ppmV) and 1983 (8.1±1.3ppmV), while the lowest value of 0.6±1.8ppmV was recorded in 2001. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In this study, palaeoenvironmental changes recorded in the top metre of a peat profile (Misten bog, East Belgium) were investigated using a multiproxy approach. Proxies include bulk density, Ti and Si content, pollen, macrofossils, δ13C on specific Sphagnum stems, and δ13C–δ18O on Sphagnum leaves. A high-resolution chronology was generated using 210Pb measurements and 22 14C AMS dates on carefully selected Sphagnum macrofossils. δ13C only records large change in mire surface wetness. This is partly due to the fact that the core was taken from the edge of a hummock, which may make it difficult to track small isotopic changes. The δ13C signal seems to be dependent upon the Sphagnum species composition. For example, a change between Sphagnum section Cuspidata towards Sphagnum imbricatum causes a significant drop in the δ13C values. On the whole, the C and O isotopes record two shallow pool phases during the 8th–9th and the 13th centuries. Pollen and atmospheric soil dust (ASD) fluxes records increased human occupation in the area. There may be some climatic signals in the ASD flux, but they are difficult to decipher from the increasing human impact (land clearance, agriculture) during the last millennium. The variations in the proxies are not always synchronous, suggesting different triggering factors (temperature, wetness, windiness) for each proxy. This study also emphasizes that, compared to studies dealing with pollution using geochemical proxies, palaeoclimatic inferences from peat bogs need as many proxies as possible, together with highly accurate and precise age-models, in order to better understand climate variability and their consequences during the Holocene. Abstract: Boreal ecosystems are highly vulnerable to climate change, and severe ecological impacts in the near future are virtually certain to occur. We undertook a multiproxy study on an alpine lake (ESM-1) at the modern tree-line in boreal, southern Siberia. Steppe and tundra biomes were extensive in eastern Sayan landscapes during the early Holocene. Boreal forest quickly expanded by 9.1 ka BP, and dominated the landscape until c 0.7 ka BP, when the greatest period of compositional turnover occurred. At this time, alpine meadow landscape expanded and Picea obovata colonised new habitats along river valleys and lake shorelines, because of prevailing cool, moist conditions. During the early Holocene, chironomid assemblages were dominated by cold stenotherms. Diatoms for much of the Holocene were dominated by alkaliphilous, fragilarioid taxa, up until 0.2 ka BP, when epiphytic species expanded, indicative of increased habitat availability. C/N mass ratios ranged between 9.5 and 13.5 (11.1–15.8 C/N atomic ratios), indicative of algal communities dominating organic matter contributions to bottom sediments with small, persistent contributions from vascular plants. However, δ13C values increased steadily from −34.9‰ during the early Holocene (9.3 ka BP) to −24.8‰ by 0.6 ka BP. This large shift in magnitude may be due to a number of factors, including increasing within-lake productivity, increasing disequilibrium between the isotopic balance of the lake with the atmosphere as the lake became isotopically ‘mature’, and declining soil respiration linked to small, but distinct retreat in forest biomes. The influence of climatic variables on landscape vegetation was assessed using redundancy analysis (RDA), a linear, direct ordination technique. Changes in July insolation at 60 °N significantly explained over one-fifth of the variation in species composition, while changes in estimates of northern hemisphere temperature and ice-rafted debris events in the North Atlantic were also significant, but considerably less important. The potential importance of climate and biome development (tundra, steppe, cold deciduous forest and taiga) on different trophic levels (i.e. chironomid and diatom communities) in lake ESM-1 was also assessed using RDA. Climate predictors had a more significant influence on Holocene chironomid assemblages, especially July insolation at 60 °N, estimates of regional precipitation and estimates of northern hemisphere temperature, while only the development of the taiga biome had a significant impact on these primary consumers. Diatom communities also had a small, but significant influence on Holocene chironomid populations, perhaps linked to variation in faunal feeding strategies. In contrast, climatic and biome predictors explained similar amounts of variation in the Holocene diatom assemblage (approximately 20% each), while chironomids themselves as predictors explained just under 7% of diatom variation. Lake acidity was inferred using a diatom inference model. Results suggest that after deglaciation, the lake did not undergo a process of gradual acidification, most likely due to the presence of continuous permafrost and low levels of precipitation, preventing base cations and dissolved organic carbon entering the lake (except for the period between 1.7 and 0.7 ka BP). We conclude that lakes in continental, boreal regions undergo different models of lake ontogeny than oceanic boreal regions. Unlike other regions discussed, climate is a more important driver of ecosystem change than catchment changes. We also demonstrate that the start of the period coincident with the onset of the Little Ice Age resulted in important thresholds crossed in catchment vegetation and aquatic communities. The paper presents the results of interdisciplinary (multiproxy) palaeoenvironmental studies of peat - calcareous tufa depositional sequences of spring mire from Radzików site (east Poland). Analyses of three biotic proxies (plant macrofossils, pollen, molluscs) were supplemented with sedimentological, geochemical, oxygen and carbon stable isotopes analyses and radiocarbon dating and used for reconstruction of environmental changes in Late Glacial and Holocene. The obtained results enable us to (1) reconstruct main phases of mire development and (2) determine environmental factors influencing changes of water supply. The object started to develop in Allerød. The Late Glacial and Early Holocene deposit sequence is relatively thick (about 1.0 m), with good palaeoecological record. The boundary between Younger Dryas and Preboreal is especially well confirmed by palynological and malacological analyses as well as radiocarbon dating. Abstract: Lead pollution history over Northern Poland was reconstructed for the last ca. 1300years using the elemental and Pb isotope geochemistry of a dated Polish peat bog. The data show that Polish Pb–Zn ores and coal were the main sources of Pb, other heavy metals and S over Northern Poland up until the industrial revolution. After review of the potential mobility of each element, most of the historical interpretation was based on Pb and Pb isotopes, the other chemical elements (Zn, Cu, Ni, S) being considered secondary indicators of pollution. During the last century, leaded gasoline also contributed to anthropogenic Pb pollution over Poland. Coal and Pb–Zn ores, however, remained important sources of pollution in Eastern European countries during the last 50years, as demonstrated by a high 206Pb/207Pb ratio (1.153) relative to that of Western Europe (ca. 1.10). This high-resolution, multiproxy, palaeoenvironmental study of the Słowińskie Błota raised bog in N Poland, 10 km from the Baltic Sea, covering the last 1200 years reveals different aspects of environmental change in a range of spatial scales from local to regional. Testate amoebae allowed quantitative reconstruction of the local water table using a transfer function based on a training set from N and W Poland. Special attention is paid to the testate amoeba Arcella discoides, which responds to rapid water-table fluctuations more than to average surface wetness. Macrofossils supported by local pollen tracked the local vegetation dynamics caused by local human impact and disturbance, including nutrients. Regional pollen showed human-induced landscape change outside the bog. Tree rings of Pinus sylvestris reflected the history of tree establishment and desiccation of the bog. Strong correlations between DCA axes 1 of regional pollen, of macrofossils and of testate amoebae, and a testate-amoebae-based water-table reconstruction that excludes A. discoides, indicate that changes on all spatial scales are linked, which is explained by a strong hydrologic connection between bog and surroundings. The distribution of stable isotopes (18O and 13C) and radiocarbon in organic materials, carbonates and water samples collected from the environment of lacustrine sediments in Gosciąż Lake (Central Poland) and Wigry Lake (NE Poland) were investigated. The oxygen and carbon isotopic analysis of terrestrial semi submerged and submerged plants, shells and water samples were compared with the results of the uppermost sediments from lakes. It was found that the concentration of isotopes in different components of organic and carbonate materials in lakes and their environments are reflected in isotope composition averaging of lakes sediments, whereas the isotope composition of plants and carbonate depends on biogeochemical factors. The research carried out revealed significant variations in the distribution of the stable isotopes and 14C in different elements of lacustrine ecosystem. We have analyzed mean values and variations of 14C concentration, ◻18O, ◻13C of plants, carbonates and the relationship between the total content of carbon and ◻13C. In the case of plants, the isotope composition depends also on the physiognomy and the photosynthesis pathway. We noticed variations in ◻13C and ◻18O within plant tissues, variations in ◻13C among whole tissue material and alpha-cellulose, carbon isotopic composition of photosynthetically fixed carbon and syntaxonomic dependences and then we compared the results of isotope composition of plants and carbonates in Wigry Lake and Gośeciąż Lake. 14C concentration measurements together with carbon and oxygen stable isotope analysis in calcareous tufa give possibilities for reconstruction of time scale and palaeoclimatic conditions of sedimentary processes. Results of isotope examinations of 2 profiles with organic and tufa sediments from Eastern Poland and 8 calcareous tufa sites from Eastern India (Orissa) are given. A systematic error of 14C conventional age of carbonate fraction of tufa samples as reservoir age (TR) was estimated. The TR values of different type of tufa sediment are determined by stream water energy. On the basis of known experimental dependence between TR and δ13C for tufas deposited in high, average and low energy water, unknown values of TR and corrected 14C ages (TCCA) were calculated for samples from India tufa sites. Continuous deposition of organic and carbonate sediments in Polish profiles give the possibility to calculate the approximated TCCA ages on the basis of dependence between TCCA and a sample depth in a profile, and time scale reconstruction of δ13C and δ18O changes in carbonate fraction of tufa samples during the whole Holocene. Measurements of δ18O and δ13C in tufa samples dated by 14C method have been used to reconstruct climatic changes in Southern and Eastern Poland and in Eastern India (Orissa) for the last ca 13,500 years. Stable isotope time record δ18O in calcareous tufa profiles can be interpreted as palaeoclimatic record if dependence between oxygen isotope composition and temperature for the specific climatic region is known. Estimated sedimentation temperatures of calcareous tufas from Polish sites indicate the mean year of air temperatures during the last 12,000 years and mean winter and summer temperature for Orissa state, using stable isotope analysis for calcareous tufa from Indian sites. The estimated temperatures have real values, comparable with contemporaneous sedimentation temperature. The characteristic trend of the temperature changes increasing for Poland and decreasing for Orissa, since the beginning of the Holocene till today, can be observed with climatic optimum ca 5 000- 6000 BP synchronous in both countries. Abstract: New results of radiocarbon concentration in tree rings from the City of Valladolid (Spain) covering a growth period of 22year have been measured using an AMS. Samples were taken using a hollow drill from a living tree, and α-cellulose was extracted from each of annual rings (early and late wood separately). The set of data shows lower radiocarbon concentration than that reported for “clean air” at the reference station, indicating a remarkable input of “dead” CO2 of fossil fuel origin. Using data of carbon dioxide and 14C concentrations from Schauinsland, the corresponding summer and winter values of the fossil component (c f) in carbon dioxide were calculated for the City of Valladolid. By fitting exponential and linear functions to the experimental data, the exchange time was calculated, and the expected future 14C concentration in the atmosphere was estimated. Palaeoecological analyses of Falkland Island peat profiles have largely been confined to pollen analyses. In order to improve understanding of long-term Falkland Island peat development processes, the plant macrofossil and stable isotope stratigraphy of an 11,550 year Falkland Island Cortaderia pilosa ('whitegrass') peat profile was investigated. The peatland developed into an acid, whitegrass peatland via a poor fen stage. Macrofossil charcoal indicate that local fires have frequently occurred throughout the development of the peatland. Raman spectroscopy analyses indicate changes in the intensity of burning which are likely to be related to changes in fuel types, abundance of fine fuels due to reduced evapotranspiration/higher rainfall (under weaker Southern Westerly Winds), peat moisture and human disturbance. Stable isotope and thermogravimetric analyses were used to identify a period of enhanced decomposition of the peat matrices dating from ∼7020 cal yr BP, which possibly reflects increasing strength of the Southern Westerly winds. The southern westerly winds (SWW) play a major role in climate variability in Southern Hemisphere mid- and high-latitudes, regulating rainfall, ocean circulation, and the Southern Ocean carbon sink. Despite their importance, little is known about millennial scale changes in the SWW and how they have influenced the climate system in the past and interacted with the Earth's surface elements, such as dust, nutrients and carbon. Here we present a dust record from a 6.6 kyr old peat core in Amsterdam Island (AMS) situated at the northern edge of the SWW (37°S) in the Southern Indian Ocean. Mineral dust flux was used to track atmospheric dust production, long-distance transport and subsequent deposition. Dust provenance was determined from rare earth element (REE) and Nd isotopic signatures (εNd) in the peat core, compared with a reference dataset of Southern Hemisphere dust sources. Using a multi-proxy mixing model, the εNd and REE ratios show a relatively uniform mixture of ca. 40% local, 15% Southern African and 45% Southern South American dust sources since 6.6 cal kyr BP. However, from 1910 AD onwards, there is a doubling in the contribution from Southern Africa (32%). Two mineral dust flux minima occur at 6.2–4.9 cal kyr BP and 3.9–2.7 cal kyr BP, interpreted as periods with equatorward-shifted and/or strengthened SWW at the northern edge of the wind belt. Conversely, periods of higher dust flux at 6.6–6.2 cal kyr BP, 4.9–3.9 cal kyr BP, and 1.4 cal kyr BP onwards are interpreted as poleward-shifted and/or weakened SWW. These interpretations are based on the findings that higher (lower) wind speeds lead to enhanced (less) removal of distal dust on the way to AMS, by wet deposition and turbulence. Published Holocene SWW records at the northern edge of the wind belt (33–41°S) covering South-America, Southern-Africa and Australia, show much variability over the last 6.6 kyr. We suggest this reflects complex regional climate variability in the different SH longitudinal sectors, indicating that SWW are not zonally homogeneous at the northern edge of the wind belt. The recent shift in dust provenance is not accompanied by enhanced total dust deposition at AMS. We therefore suggest that human impact (e.g., land use changes) and drier climate conditions in Southern Africa have led to enhanced dust mobilization. • Amsterdam Island peat εNd and REE ratios indicate 40% local dust input, 15% Southern Africa and 45% Southern South America from 6.6 kyr cal BP to 1910AD. • Low mineral dust deposition to the peatland at 6.2–4.9 and 3.9–2.7 cal kyr BP suggests an equatorward-shifted and/or strengthened SWW at their northern edge. • Enhanced Southern African dust mobilization during the last 100 years is likely related to anthropogenic changes in land-use and the drier climate conditions. The Carpathian Mountains host several ice caves that preserve a large variety of geochemical information on past climate and environmental changes. In such caves, ice forms in winter by the freezing on infiltrating water, the later accumulating during the rainy season, between early summer and late autumn (depending on site-specific conditions). Here, we present the first reconstruction of summer temperature during the last 1000 years based on the d18O and d2H values measured in Focul Viu Ice Cave (Western Carpathian Mountains, Romania).Focul Viu (FV) is short (107 m long) descending cave, located at ca. 1165 m above sea level on the windward (western) side of the mountains. A stratified ice block, with a volume of ~25000 m3 and ~20 m thickness, occupies the floor of the cave. In May 2016 we have extracted a 4.86 m long ice core from the cave glacier and measured the stable isotope composition of ice in order to derive information on past climate variability. The chronology of the core is based on six 14C measurements on organic matter embedded in the ice. Monitoring of the stable isotope composition of precipitation in the vicinity of the cave shows that most of the summer precipitation is originating in the Atlantic Ocean, ca. 30 % percent of it being locally recycled during heavy summer storms.We have found a near-perfect correlation between d18O (and d2H) of the ice core and instrumental summer temperatures measurements at three local stations, located west, north and east of the cave's location and have used this correlation to reconstruct summer temperature variability during the past ~1100 years. Our results show little centennial-scale variability during this period, suggesting that summer temperatures were likely similar between the Medieval Warm Period (MWP) and the Little Ice Age (LIA). In contrast, winter temperatures reconstructed from the nearby Scărișoara Ice Cave clearly show lower temperatures during the LIA, compared to the MWP, suggesting that the well-known temperature contrast between the two periods was a the result of winter climatic conditions. On a decadal scale, both during the MWP and the LIA, summer temperatures fluctuated with a periodicity of ~20/30 years, the minima and the maxima matching the fluctuations recorded by the Atlantic Ocean sea surface temperatures. Both the periodicity and the observed variability are similar to those of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation, suggesting the d18O and d2H values in FV cave ice are recording climatic changes at hemispheric scale, thus being an important new proxy for both past temperatures and large-scale circulation changes. Atmospheric dust loadings play a crucial role in the global climate system. Southern South America is a key dust source, however, dust deposition rates remain poorly quantified since the last glacial termination (~17 kyr ago), an important timeframe to anticipate future climate changes. Here we use isotope and element geochemistry in a peat archive from Tierra del Fuego, to reconstruct atmospheric dust fluxes and associated environmental and westerly wind changes for the past 16.2 kyr. Dust depositions were elevated during the Antarctic Cold Reversal (ACR) and second half of the Younger Dryas (YD) stadial, originating from the glacial Beagle Channel valley. This increase was most probably associated with a strengthening of the westerlies during both periods as dust source areas were already available before the onset of the dust peaks and remained present throughout. Congruent with glacier advances across Patagonia, this dust record indicates an overall strengthening of the wind belt during the ACR. On the other hand, we argue that the YD dust peak is linked to strong and poleward shifted westerlies. The close interplay between dust fluxes and climatic changes demonstrates that atmospheric circulation was essential in generating and sustaining present-day interglacial conditions.
