Objective: To analyze the association between depressive symptoms and quality of life in older adults. Method: Cross-sectional study carried out between July and October, in 2020, with 596 older adults who answered three instruments, namely: bio-sociodemographic, Geriatric Depression Scale and WHOQOL-Old. Data were analyzed using Chi-square, Kruskal-Wallis, Spearman correlation and linear regression tests, considering a 95% confidence interval (p<0.05). Results: Depressive symptoms were negatively and statistically significantly associated with all facets of quality of life: sensory abilities (β= -1.922 [CI95%= -2.328 - -1.517]); autonomy (β= -2.410 [CI95%= - 2.755 - -2.064]); past, present and future activities (β= -3.534 [CI95%= -3.879 - -3.189]); social participation (β= -3.436 [CI95%= -3.816 - -3.056]); death and dying (β= -2.260 [CI95%= -2.792 - - 1.728]) and intimacy (β= -3.547 [CI95%= -3,900 - -3.194]). Conclusion: The presence of depressive symptoms is negatively associated with the quality of life of older adults, thus requiring interventions in this area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To assess the effectiveness of an educational intervention on perceived stress and metabolic syndrome parameters among adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus., Method: Fifty-one adults (aged 48.73±7.84; 86.3% of women) were included in a non-randomized clinical trial performed in a healthcare unit for six months (Brazilian Clinical Trial Registry: RBR-43K52N). All participants were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome (intervention group, n=26; control group, n=25). The intervention consisted of a nurse-led educational health-promoting program with a multidisciplinary approach organized in seven workshops. The primary outcome was decreased perceived stress, and the secondary outcome was improvement in metabolic syndrome parameters according to perceived stress levels. These outcomes were assessed at two points in time, at the baseline and follow-up., Results: Participation in the intervention program resulted in a significant decrease in perceived stress (p=0.028). The stressed participants in the intervention group experienced a significant decrease in blood glucose levels (p=0.001) and a significant increase in high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (p=0.003) concentrations after the six-month intervention., Conclusion: The nurse-led educational health-promoting program decreased perceived stress among adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome, improving fasting blood glucose and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol among the stressed participants in the intervention group., Competing Interests: The authors of this article and the planning committee members and staff have no relevant financial relationships with commercial interests to disclose., (Copyright� by the Universidad de Antioquia.)

Objective: To evaluate factors associated with the quality of life of intensive care nurses., Methods: Cross-sectional, exploratory, descriptive study developed in three intensive care units of a public hospital of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, between January and May 2013. The study sample consisted of 40 nurses. Two questionnaires were applied: sociodemographic and WHOQOL-bref. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean, minimum, maximum and 0-100 score)., Results: 90% of the participants were females (n=36), of whom 50% were aged between 25 and 30 years (n=20) and 50% single (n=20). 62.5% of them did not have children (n=25) and 60% had a workload of more than 44 hours per week (n=24). Regarding their understanding about quality of life (QoL), 22.5% stated that they felt "bad" in relation to health satisfaction, and 27.5% said they were "dissatisfied". As for the domains of QoL, the following scores were obtained: physical (63.04); psychological (65.44); social relations (62.71) and environment (52.73)., Conclusion: These results show that intensive care nurses obtained less satisfactory scores in the domains of QoL evaluated by the WHOQOL-bref, mainly in the domains of social relations and environment.
