Abstract

In this work, a noninvasive microwave-based system for monitoring water content in stone materials used in Cultural Heritage structures is presented. By placing a planar resonator in contact with the considered stone sample, through reflection scattering parameter measurements, it is possible to associate the resonant frequency of the resonator to the moisture content of the stone sample. In this way, an experimental relationship between resonant frequency and moisture content can be obtained. Experimental tests are carried out on two types of materials, namely gentile and carparo stones: which are typically found in Cultural Heritage structures in outhern Italy and they are particularly affected by deterioration and decay phenomena. Measurements were performed for five levels of water content of the stone samples, and the mpirical relationship between each considered level of water content and the corresponding measured quantity were derived. The obtained results demonstrate that this solution appears robust.

Abstract

3D-printer materials are becoming increasingly more appealing also for high frequency applications. Thus, the electromagnetic characterization of these materials is an important step in order to evaluate their applicability in new technological devices. We present a measurement method for the loss tangent evaluation based on a dielectric loaded resonator (DR). Comparing the quality factor Q of the DR with a disk-shaped sample placed on a DR base with Q obtained when the sample is substituted with an air gap, allows a reliable loss tangent determination.

Abstract

In this work, a noninvasive low-cost TDR-based system for monitoring moisture content in Cultural Heritage structures is presented. The proposed system relies on an adhesive (removable) tape, constituted by two copper strips which run parallel to each other and act as sensing element. Experimental tests were carried out by intentionally moistening a portion of a wall, and monitoring the TDR response as the moistened area naturally dried up. Preliminary results showed that, thanks to the non-invasiveness features, the proposed system is a good candidate for noninvasive monitoring of moisture in monumental buildings.

Abstract

This paper describes the operating and technical details of the practical implementation of an innovative time domain reflectometry (TDR)-system for monitoring rising damp in building structures. The proposed system employs wire-like, passive, diffused sensing elements (SE's) that are embedded, at the time of construction or renovation, inside the walls of the building to be monitored. The SE's remain permanently inside the wall, ready to be interrogated when necessary.

Abstract

The reflection scattering parameter, the gain, and the radiation pattern in the E- and H-planes, have been measured for a woodpile-covered patch, with the superstrate at different distances from the antenna. The main effect of the EBG on the antenna performances is an enhancement of about 10 dB in maximum gain. Experimental results are also presented for the transmission properties of woodpile cavities, and a comparison is reported with the Fourier Modal Method. © 2010 EuMA.

Abstract

In this paper, a transverse electro-magnetic (TEM) coil operating at 128 MHz in a 3-T magnetic resonance imaging system has been studied in terms of the interaction with patients with or without an implanted pacemaker. The pacemaker has been simulated as a copper box with a catheter constituted by an insulated copper wire with an uncapped tip and it has been placed inside either box or anatomical models of the thorax. Electromagnetic and thermal simulations have been performed by using finite difference time domain codes. The obtained results show that in the absence of the pacemaker, and for a radiated power producing in the box a whole body specific absorption rate (SAR) of 1 W/kg, that is a typical value for MRI examinations, the coil produces in the anatomical models peak temperature values lower than the limits issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). In the presence of the pacemaker, temperature increments at the catheter tip in excess of those issued by the IEC standard are obtained when the MRI scanned area involves the pacemaker region. The 3-T coil produces lower SAR and temperature increments with respect to a 64-MHz (1.5-T system) birdcage antenna in patients with implanted pacemaker. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
