1. Crystallization kinetics of equimolar liquid crystalline mixture and its components

Abstract

The new equimolar mixture comprises liquid crystalline compounds MHPOBC and partially fluorinated 3F2HPhF6. The phase sequence of the mixture is determined by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and broadband dielectric spectroscopy. The enantiotropic smectic A*, C*, and CA* phases are observed for the mixture. Only partial crystallization of the mixture is observed during cooling at 2-40 K/min and the remaining smectic CA* phase undergoes vitrification. In contrast, the crystallization of the pure components is complete or almost complete for the same range of cooling rates. The kinetics of the non-isothermal and isothermal crystallization of the mixture and pure components are investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. The non-isothermal data are analyzed by the isoconversional method, while the isothermal data are analyzed using the Avrami model. Typically, the nucleation-controlled crystallization kinetics are observed.

2. Mental health disparities of sexual minority refugees and asylum seekers: Provider perspectives on trauma exposure, symptom presentation, and treatment approach.

Abstract

Refugees and asylum seekers who identify as sexual minorities and/or who have been persecuted for same-sex acts maneuver through multiple oppressive systems at all stages of migration. Sexual minority refugees and asylum seekers (SM RAS) report experiencing a greater number of persecutory experiences and worse mental health symptoms than refugees and asylum seekers persecuted for reasons other than their sexual orientation (non-SM RAS). SM RAS are growing in numbers, report a need and desire for mental health treatment, and are often referred to therapy during the asylum process. However, little research has been conducted on the treatment needs of SM RAS in therapy or the strategies therapists use to address these needs. This study sought to identify these factors through qualitative interviews with providers at a specialty refugee mental health clinic (N = 11), who had experience treating both SM RAS and non-SM RAS. Interviews were transcribed and coded for themes of similarities and differences between SM RAS and non-SM RAS observed during treatment and factors that could be leveraged to reduce mental health disparities between SM RAS and non-SM RAS. Clinicians reported that compared to the non-SM RAS, SM RAS reported greater childhood trauma exposure, increased isolation, decreased support, identity-related shame, difficulty trusting others, and continued discrimination due to their SM identitiy. Suggested adaptations included reducing isolation, preparing for ongoing identity-based challenges, creating safe spaces to express SM identity, and a slower treatment pace. Providers reported benefits and drawbacks to centering the client's SM identity in treatment and encouraging community involvement for SM RAS, and noted additional training in cultural awareness would be beneficial. Abstract

Increasingly, lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals are fleeing the 67 countries that criminalize consensual same-sex intimate relationships, seeking asylum in countries such as the United States. Minority stress theory posits that compared with non-LGB refugees and asylum seekers (RAS), LGB RAS are likely to face persecution, rejection, and discrimination and have a higher risk of experiencing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. This study assessed differences in sociodemographic characteristics, persecution experiences, and mental health outcomes among 959 RAS persecuted for same-sex behavior (pLGB RAS) who presented for care and social services at the Boston Center for Refugee Health and Human Rights. Data were derived from intake interviews with RAS clients that elicited torture experiences and assessed PTSD symptoms using the Short Screening Scale for PTSD. Over 11% of the total sample were pLGB RAS. Compared with non-pLGB RAS, pLGB RAS reported higher PTSD symptom levels, β = .08, p = .031; more difficulty loving others, d = 0.13, p < .001; and feeling more isolated, d = 0.10, p = .005. pLGB RAS reported more persecution, d = 0.31, p = .002; physical assaults, d = 0.22, p = .029; and psychological assaults, d = 0.20, p = .047; and were more likely to be asylum seekers, d = 0.11, p = .001, and have experienced persecution in Uganda, d = 0.39, p < .001, and other countries that criminalize same-sex acts, d = 0.26, p < .001. More research is needed to understand clinical outcomes and implications of treatment for this population.

20. Influence of Sensorial Delay on Clustering and Swarming

Abstract

We show that sensorial delay alters the collective motion of self-propelling agents with aligning interactions: In a two-dimensional Vicsek model, short delays enhance the emergence of clusters and swarms, while long or negative delays prevent their formation. In order to quantify this phenomenon, we introduce a global clustering parameter based on the Voronoi tessellation, which permits us to efficiently measure the formation of clusters. Thanks to its simplicity, sensorial delay might already play a role in the organization of living organisms and can provide a powerful tool to engineer and dynamically tune the behavior of large ensembles of autonomous robots., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

26. Gluten-Free Diet in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Randomized, Controlled, Single-Blinded Trial

Abstract

To determine whether a gluten-free diet (GFD) compared with a gluten-containing diet (GD) influences functioning of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), we performed a randomized, controlled, single-blinded trial. Sixty-six children (36-69 months) with ASD, within the normal IQ (> 70) range, who had been on a GFD for at least 8 weeks before enrollment were eligible for inclusion. After an 8-week run-in period on a GFD, the GFD group continued this diet and the GD group consumed at least one normal meal containing gluten per day for 6 months. There were no differences between groups in autistic symptoms, maladaptive behaviors, or intellectual abilities after the intervention. A GFD compared with a GD did not affect functioning of children with ASD.

27. Surface roughness associated with bacterial adhesion on dental resin-based materials.

Abstract

This study investigates the surface quality and bacterial adhesion properties of various dental materials, including indirect composites, veneering composites, direct composites, polyether ether ketone (PEEK), and two millable polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). Material specimens were processed following manufacturer instructions, initially evaluated for surface roughness and Streptococcus sanguinis (S. sanguinis) adhesion. Subsequently, toothbrushing simulation was employed to simulate aging, and changes in material surfaces were assessed via roughness measurements and bacterial adhesion testing. Prior to simulated aging, direct and indirect composites exhibited the lowest roughness values. However, after the simulated toothbrushing, veneering composites displayed the highest roughness levels. Both PMMA materials demonstrated the highest S. sanguinis adhesion levels, both before and after artificial aging. Interestingly, the indirect composite material showed a reduction in bacterial adhesion following toothbrushing simulation. Surprisingly, this study did not reveal a clear correlation between roughness and bacterial adhesion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

29. Long‐Term Hemorrhagic Morbidity for Children With Moyamoya Treated With Revascularization Surgery in a Single Center Retrospective Cohort

Abstract

BACKGROUND Children with moyamoya arteriopathy have reduced subsequent ischemic risk after revascularization surgery and it is also suggested that hemorrhagic risk may also be reduced by minimizing hemodynamic stress on collateral vasculature recruited within the brain parenchyma, but this has been studied only in intermediate follow‐up or follow‐up for more than a decade in East Asian populations. We aimed to evaluate the incidence of hemorrhagic stroke in long‐term follow‐up and identify at‐risk subpopulations. METHODS A single surgeon's personal case series with decades of follow‐up was reviewed for children (18 years or younger) treated with revascularization surgery. This included medical records and the surgeon's personal correspondence. RESULTS Hemorrhagic stroke occurred in 2.6% of 302 children followed for a median of 21 years after surgery. Occurring at a median of 19 years (interquartile range 14–22.75) after surgery, these hemorrhages would not be recognized in series that discontinue follow‐up at transition from pediatric to adult neurosurgical care. There was a higher proportion (5.5‐fold hazard, 95% CI, 1.1–27.6) of patients who had prior radiation therapy in the group with hemorrhagic stroke compared with the overall group. Close retrospective evaluation of vascular imaging suggests aneurysms of the collateral periventricular vessels as a common culprit. CONCLUSION Children who have moyamoya treated with revascularization surgery remain at long‐term risk of hemorrhagic stroke during adulthood, even though their ischemic stroke risk is significantly mitigated. These patients would benefit from continued clinical and radiological follow‐up, potentially with advanced imaging modalities.

The 2-hyperreflexivity of Toeplitz-harmonic type subspace generated by an isometry or a quasinormal operator is shown. The $k$-hyperreflexivity of the tensor product $\mathcal{S}\otimes \mathcal{V}$ of a $k$-hyperreflexive decomposable subspace $\mathcal{S}$ and an abelian von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{V}$ is established.
