Due to severe resource use and waste generation, the building sector causes an immense pressure on the natural environment. One potential mitigation strategy is eco-design, which can be defined as a systematic way of including environmental considerations in the design phase with the aim of reducing adverse environmental impacts throughout the life cycle of a product or building. The building sector lacks implementation of eco-design and knowledge on how to apply it to buildings. Through a systematic literature review it was identified that the most promising way to eco-design buildings is through the application of so-called eco-design strategies. For example, material substitution, where traditionally used construction materials are replaced with less impacting ones. The aim of eco-design strategies is to reduce adverse environmental impacts. However, quantitative evidence supporting their effectiveness is currently lacking. The main objective of this project was to quantify the environmental consequences of applying eco-design strategies in the building sector and prioritize between them across multiple impact categories. The environmental consequences were evaluated based on two assessments. The first assessment was conducted at an urban scale, where a building stock model capable of simulating the future demand for housing and related material flows within the urban building stock was developed. This model was coupled with consequential life cycle assessment (LCA) to quantify the environmental impacts. A multi-step approach was used to conduct a building-scale assessment that quantified the environmental consequences of applying various eco-design strategies to eight different building components, such as interior walls and floor separations. The approach employed consequential LCA to quantify the environmental impacts and statistical analysis, such as linear regression, to interpret the output. Value preservation is key for the transition from a linear economy to a sufficiency-based circular economy. However, to keep the value of products and materials at the highest level possible over time, different actors such as businesses, designers, consumers, and policymakers must know when value is reduced during a product's lifetime, and how to capture and preserve this value. This study results in a comprehensive mapping of factors with a negative impact on the perceived value of products from a consumer's perspective and suggests new routes to value preservation, as a way of turning the negative factors into positive changes. Next, the paper presents a conceptual model for value preservation. The model identifies new key actors: value transformers (product developers), value co-operators (consumers), value gatekeepers (businesses), and value accountants (policymakers) and suggests important changes to their linear practices, which are needed for the sufficiency-based circular economy paradigm to flourish., Responsible Marketing and Consumer Behavior

Seaweed is increasingly considered a promising resource to produce high-value products such as bioplastics due to potential environmental benefits such as carbon uptake and no land-use change. However, the environmental assessment of emerging technologies for producing bioplastic from seaweed remains challenging due to the difficulties in modeling future seaweed supply and demand. Within the consequential approach to life cycle assessment, an increase in demand for seaweed is met by the marginal suppliers in the market: those that are not constrained in their capacity to increase supply in response to an increase in demand. Current methods to identify marginal suppliers are however based on quantitative information and do not consider qualitative aspects and uncertainties inherent in the study of emerging technologies. This study, therefore, proposes and tests the use of quantitative storytelling to identify marginal suppliers. The results show that there are two main groups of countries that are expected to be the marginal suppliers of brown seaweed for different reasons. Asian countries are currently the main brown seaweed suppliers and are expected to keep increasing and be marginal suppliers in the future. However, these countries have well-established brown seaweed aquaculture and their growth is expected to be steady. On the other hand, brown seaweed suppliers in Northern Europe and North America are still emerging but are expected to grow faster in the future due to their production capacity and technological development.
