Rare amphibolite in the New Jersey Highlands containing plagioclase megacrysts ≤13 cm long forms bodies 0.5 to 2 m thick that preserve a penetrative metamorphic fabric and have sharp, conformable contacts against Mesoproterozoic country rocks. The megacrystic amphibolites were emplaced as thin dikes along extensional faults between 1160 and 1130 Ma. Amphibolites contain weakly zoned, subhedral andesine megacrysts (An29–44) in a matrix of plagioclase (An18–38), magnesio-hastingsite, biotite, diopside, Fe-Ti oxides, and apatite. The whole-rock major oxide composition of the megacrystic amphibolite matrix has high TiO2 (2.07 wt.% ± 2.0%), Al2O3 (17.03 wt.% ± 0.87%), and Fe2O3t (12.84 wt.% ± 3.2%) that represents an Al-Fe-rich mafic magma type that is characteristic of anorthosite associations globally. The whole-rock, rare earth element (REE) composition of the megacrystic amphibolite matrix is characterized by enrichments in light rare earth elements (LREEs) (La/YbN = 1.73–10.69) relative to middle (MREEs) and heavy (HREEs) rare earth elements (Gd/YbN = 1.30–1.85), and most samples have small positive Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 0.95–1.25). The megacrystic amphibolite matrix is also enriched in large ion lithophile elements (LILEs) and depleted in high field strength elements (HFSEs) (e.g., Ba/Nb = 24–22). Megacrystic amphibolites formed through partial melting of subduction-modified lithospheric mantle that fractionated olivine and plagioclase, producing a high-Al-Fe mafic magma. Plagioclase megacrysts formed through extraction of a plagioclase-rich crystal-liquid mush from anorthosite that mixed with mafic magma and collected in the upper part of the mid-crustal magma (depth of ~20 km based on Al-in-hornblende geobarometry) chamber through flotation. Periodic tapping of this mixed source by extensional fractures led to emplacement of the amphibolites as dikes and may have interrupted the extensive fractionation and plagioclase separation necessary to form voluminous anorthosite intrusions. At Mt. Etna volcano, the emission of plagioclase megacryst-bearing lavas, known locally as 'cicirara', has occurred rarely and generally in association with unusual volcanological phenomena. In this work, we interpret the magma chamber processes and the structural features of the plumbing system that led to the production of these peculiar volcanic rocks, based on a detailed study of plagioclase megacrysts, including their oscillatory zoning, sieve textures, and fluid inclusions. Patchy zoning suggests limited ascent in the deep levels of the plumbing system, based on the plagioclase nucleation threshold and the volatile saturation depth. At intermediate, water-undersaturated levels of the plumbing system ascent is faster, as indicated by crystals with coarse sieve textures. Storage at shallow, water-saturated levels (less than 6 km deep) is associated with oscillatory zoning with very small changes in An. Slightly larger An variations coupled with different wavelengths provide evidence of convection of crystals across distinct zones of the chamber. Stripes of melt inclusions formed at steps of magma ascent and volatile loss, whereas layers of fluid inclusions may be related to episodes of volatile flushing into the magma chamber. In contrast, strongly sieve-textured envelopes with An increase and constant FeO may be related to mixing with more volatile-rich magmas of similar composition. We interpret the repeated occurrence of 'cicirara' lavas as evidence that the shallow portion of the plumbing system underwent a progressive coalescence of a complex network of dykes and sills in response to increasing rates of magma supply from depth. Abstract: A small isolated Neogene, possibly Quaternary, monogenetic alkali olivine basalt cone in northeastern Iran contains both mantle peridotite and crustal gabbroic xenoliths, as well as plagioclase megacrysts. The basaltic magma rose to the surface along pathways associated with local extension at the junction between the N–S right-lateral and E–W left-lateral strike slip faults that form the northeastern boundary of the Lut microcontinental block. This basalt is enriched in LREE relative to HREE, and has trace-element ratios similar to that of oceanic island basalts (OIB). Its 87Sr/86Sr (0.705013 to 0.705252), 143Nd/144Nd (0.512735 to 0.512738), and Pb isotopic compositions all fall in the field of OIB derived from enriched (EM-2) mantle. It formed by mixing of small melt fractions from both garnet-bearing asthenospheric and spinel-facies lithospheric mantle. Plagioclase (An26-32) megacrysts, up to 4cm in length, have euhedral crystal faces and show no evidence of reaction with the host basalt. Their trace-element concentrations suggest that these megacrysts are co-genetic with the basalt host, although their 87Sr/86Sr (0.704796) and 143Nd/144Nd (0.512687) ratios are different than this basalt. Round to angular, medium-grained granoblastic meta-igneous gabbroic xenoliths, ranging from ~1 to 6cm in dimension, are derived from the lower continental crust. Spinel–peridotite xenoliths equilibrated in the subcontinental lithosphere at depths of 30 to 60km and temperatures of 965°C to 1065°C. These xenoliths do not preserve evidence of extensive metasomatic enrichment as has been inferred for the mantle below the Damavand volcano further to the west in north-central Iran, and clinopyroxenes separated from two different mantle xenoliths have 87Sr/86Sr (0.704309 and 0.704593) and 143Nd/144Nd (0.512798) ratios which are less radiogenic than either their host alkali basalt or Damavand basalts, implying significant regional variations in the composition and extent of metasomatism in the sub-Iranian mantle.
