Purpose: This paper aims to improve the delimitation of plant growth stages in the context of weather index insurance design. We propose a data-driven phase division that minimizes estimation errors in the weather-yield relationship and investigate whether it can substitute an expert-based determination of plant growth phases. We combine this procedure with various statistical and machine learning estimation methods and compare their performance. Design/methodology/approach: Using the example of winter barley, we divide the complete growth cycle into four sub-phases based on phenology reports and expert instructions and evaluate all combinations of start and end points of the various growth stages by their estimation errors of the respective yield models. Some of the most commonly used statistical and machine learning methods are employed to model the weather-yield relationship with each selected method we applied. Findings: Our results confirm that the fit of crop-yield models can be improved by disaggregation of the vegetation period. Moreover, we find that the data-driven approach leads to similar division points as the expert-based approach. Regarding the statistical model, in terms of yield model prediction accuracy, Support Vector Machine ranks first and Polynomial Regression last; however, the performance across different methods exhibits only minor differences. Originality/value: This research addresses the challenge of separating plant growth stages when phenology information is unavailable. Moreover, it evaluates the performance of statistical and machine learning methods in the context of crop yield prediction. Background: Biochar application has become one of the most potential tools to improve soil fertility and plant growth for sustainable and eco-friendly agriculture. However, both positive and negative effects of biochar application have been recorded on plant growth and soil fertility. Methods: This study investigated the impact of different application rates (0, 600, 900, 1200, and 1800 kg/ha) of biochar on the soil nutrient contents, accumulation of nutrients and dry matter in different plant parts, and growth of flue-cured tobacco plants under field conditions. Results: Results demonstrated that soil organic carbon pool and carbon/nitrogen ratio were increased proportionally with the increasing dosage of biochar, 25.54 g/kg and 14.07 g/kg compared with control 17 g/kg and 10.13 g/kg, respectively. The contents of soil total nitrogen were also significantly increased after biochar application in the middle (1.77 g/kg) and late-growth (1.54 g/kg) stages of fluecured tobacco than in control (1.60 g/kg and 1.41 g/kg, respectively). The contents of soil nitrate nitrogen were also higher under low (600 and 900 kg/ha) application rates of biochar and reduced when higher (1200 and 1800 kg/ha) dosages of biochar were applied. However, it was observed that varying application rates of biochar had no impact on soil ammonium nitrogen content during the growth period of flue-cured tobacco plants. The nutrient accumulation (N, P, K) in different parts of flue-cured tobacco plants was significantly increased under a low application rate of biochar, which enhanced the soil and plant analyzer development values, effective leaves number, growth, dry matter accumulation, and leaf yield of flue-cured tobacco. In contrast, the high biochar application rate (1200 and 1800 kg/ha) negatively impacted nutrient accumulation and growth of flue-cured tobacco. Conclusion: Conclusively, the optimum application of biochar (600 and 900 kg/ha) is beneficial for plant growth, soil fertility, accumulation of nutrients, and dry matter in different plant parts. However, excessive biochar application (> 900 kg/ha) could inhibit flue-cured tobacco plant growth. Introduction: The photosynthetic electron transport chain (ETC) is the bridge that links energy harvesting during the photophysical reactions at one end and energy consumption during the biochemical reactions at the other. Its functioning is thus fundamental for the proper balance between energy supply and demand in photosynthesis. Currently, there is a lack of understanding regarding how the structural properties of the ETC are affected by nutrient availability and plant developmental stages, which is a major roadblock to comprehensive modeling of photosynthesis. Methods: Redox parameters reflect the structural controls of ETC on the photochemical reactions and electron transport. We conducted joint measurements of chlorophyll fluorescence (ChlF) and gas exchange under systematically varying environmental conditions and growth stages of maize and sampled foliar nutrient contents. We utilized the recently developed steadystate photochemical model to infer redox parameters of electron transport from these measurements. Results and discussion: We found that the inferred values of these photochemical redox parameters varied with leaf macronutrient content. These variations may be caused either directly by these nutrients being components of protein complexes on the ETC or indirectly by their impacts on the structural integrity of the thylakoid and feedback from the biochemical reactions. Also, the redox parameters varied with plant morphology and developmental stage, reflecting seasonal changes in the structural properties of the ETC. Given the assumption that weather risks affect crop yields, we designed a weather index insurance product for soybean producers in the US state of Illinois. By separating the entire vegetation cycle into four growth stages, we investigate whether the phase-division procedure contributes to weather–yield loss relation estimation and, hence, to basis risk mitigation. Concretely, supposing stage-variant interaction patterns between temperature-based weather index growing degree days and rainfall-based weather index cumulative rainfall, a nonparametric weather–yield loss relation is estimated by a generalized additive model. The model includes penalized B-spline (P-spline) approach based on nonlinear optimal indemnity solutions under the expected utility framework. The P-spline analysis of variance (PS-ANOVA) method is used for efficient estimation through mixed model re-parameterization. The results indicate that the phase-division models significantly outperform the benchmark whole-cycle ones either under quadratic utility or exponential utility, given different levels of risk aversions. Finally, regarding hedging effectiveness, the expected utility ratio between the phase-division contract and the whole-cycle contract, and the percentage changes of mean root square loss and variance of revenues support the proposed phase-division contract. Abstract Nowadays, deficit irrigation is of particular importance in areas facing the water shortage and drought. This study focused on the investigation and prediction of the values of five quantitative traits of guar beans under different deficit irrigation methods. Deficit irrigation methods were carried out at the initial, development, mid, and late plant growth stages. The experiment was carried out in 25 treatments each with four replications in 2018 and 2019. Initially, the values of five quantitative traits of guar beans were divided into three categories, the values of which were clustered using the K-means algorithm. Then, clusters were predicted using a combination of K-means and CART algorithms. Finally, the relationship between different deficit irrigation methods and clusters was investigated by a combination of K-means and Apriori algorithms. The results of two hybrid algorithms determined that the amount of irrigation in the mid-stage of plant growth significantly affected the five quantitative traits of guar beans. After the mid-stage of the plant growth, the amount of irrigation in the development, initial, and late growth stages had the greatest effect on the quantitative traits of guar beans. Among the deficit irrigation methods, irrigation rates of 60% in the primary stage, 80% in the development stage, 100% in the mid-stage, and 40% in the late stage of the plant growth were the best deficit irrigation methods in the four stages of growth.

Rhizoremediation is a promising remediation technology for the removal of soil persistent organic pollutants (POPs), especially benzo[a]pyrene (BaP). However, our understanding of the associations among rhizospheric soil metabolites, functional microorganisms, and POPs degradation in different plant growth stages is limited. We combined stable-isotope probing (SIP), high-throughput sequencing, and metabolomics to analyze changes in rhizospheric soil metabolites, functional microbes, and BaP biodegradation in the early growth stages (tillering, jointing) and later stage (booting) of ryegrass. Microbial community structures differed significantly among growth stages. Metabolisms such as benzenoids and carboxylic acids tended to be enriched in the early growth stage, while lipids and organic heterocyclic compounds dominated in the later stage. From SIP, eight BaP-degrading microbes were identified, and most of which such as Ilumatobacter and Singulisphaera were first linked with BaP biodegradation. Notably, the relationship between the differential metabolites and BaP degradation efficiency further suggested that BaP-degrading microbes might metabolize BaP directly to produce benzenoid metabolites (3-hydroxybenzo[a]pyrene), or utilize benzenoids (phyllodulcin) to stimulate the co-metabolism of BaP in early growth stage; some lipids and organic acids, e.g. 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid, might provide nutrients for the degraders to promote BaP metabolism in later stage. Accordingly, we determined that certain rhizospheric metabolites might regulate the rhizospheric microbial communities at different growth stages, and shift the composition and diversity of BaP-degrading bacteria, thereby enhancing in situ BaP degradation. Our study sheds light on POPs rhizoremediation mechanisms in petroleum-contaminated soils.

Glycine max (L.) Merr. (soybean) has been mentioned as a potential accumulator of hazardous metals, such as Pb. The main route of human exposure to heavy metals is consumption. This study evaluates Pb accumulation in soybean at different growth stages. The aim was to determine the period of the crop development when absorption and distribution mostly occur. Soybean plants were grown in control and Pb-polluted soils in a greenhouse experiment. Morpho-physiological parameters and Pb content in organs were analyzed. Results showed that Pb affected the biomass of roots and plant height, with the highest Pb accumulation occurring in the roots and with low translocation to aerial organs. Moreover, Pb accumulation and distribution occurred before grain filling, the crop critical period. Soybean seeds accumulated Pb above permissible values, but with no associated toxicological risk. Furthermore, pods showed higher Pb values ​​than seeds, suggesting a protective effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Relative feed value and structural mineral differentiation of native grasses and their relationships at different plant growth stages were studied to create a more informative multivariate model to predict relative feed value. The hierarchical clustering grouped the species and their growth stages under six distinct categories with their average relative feed values of 122.6, 108.6, 99.6, 90.3, 80.9 and 71.5. The principal component analyses for the relative feed value and the mineral composition of native grasses was efficient to classify the forages with the total explained variation of 63.69% with the first two principal components. The most important predictors for relative feed value were determined as nitrogen and potassium contents of the native grasses according to beta coefficients from the partial least square regression analyses. Three partial least square regression based new empirical equations for predicting the relative feed value were constructed by using the forage nitrogen content. The coefficients of determination (R2) and the root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) for the equations were 0.92, 0.35, 0.81 and 2.17, 11.29, 5.88, respectively. Progressive soil compaction is a disadvantage of intensive tillage. Compaction exerts a negative impact on the physical properties of soil and decreases crop performance. The adverse effects of soil compaction can be mitigated by replacing conventional tillage with simplified tillage techniques. Simplified tillage exerts a protective effect on soil, reduces production costs and preserves agricultural ecosystems. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of compaction and different tillage methods on the bulk density and moisture content of soil. The experimental factors were as follows: Soil compaction before sowing (non-compacted control treatment and experimental treatments where soil was compacted after the harvest of the preceding crop) and four different methods of seedbed preparation in a three-field rotation system (winter oilseed rape, winter wheat, spring barley). The influence of compaction on the bulk density and moisture content of soil varied across the rotated crops and their developmental stages. Soil compaction had no significant effect on the analyzed parameters in the cultivation of winter oilseed rape. In treatments sown with winter wheat, soil compaction resulted in significantly lower soil density and significantly higher soil moisture content. In plots sown with spring barley, soil compaction led to a significant increase in the values of both parameters. The average bulk density of soil after various tillage operations in the examined crop rotation system ranged from 1.49–1.69 g·m−3 (winter oilseed rape), 1.47–1.59 g·m−3 (winter wheat), 1.47–1.61 g·m−3 (spring barley). The bulk density and moisture content of soil were lowest after conventional tillage (control treatment) and higher after simplified tillage. Regardless of soil compaction, the greatest reduction in winter oilseed rape yields was noted in response to skimming, harrowing and the absence of pre-sowing plowing. Spring barley yields were higher in non-compacted treatments, whereas the reverse was observed in winter wheat. Chisel plowing and single plowing induced the greatest decrease in wheat yields relative to conventional tillage. Single plowing significantly decreased the grain yield of spring barley relative to the tillage system that involved skimming and fall plowing to a depth of 25.

Background: Thymus daenensis is on e of the endemic aromatic species in Iran that its essential oil is used in food and pharmaceutical industries. Objective: In this study, the effects of plant growth stages and distillation methods on essential oil content and thymol percentage of this species were evaluated. Methods: The aerial parts of Th. daenensis were collected in three stages of plant growth from Tehran province of Iran. The plant materials were dried in shade and their essential oils were isolated by hydro-distillation in three replications. In addition, the essential oils of plant materials at full flowering stage were obtained by hydro-distillation, water&steam distillation and steam distillation. The essential oils were analyzed by capillary GC and GC/MS. Results: The result showed that the different plant growth stages and distillation methods had significant effect on essential oil content. The highest essential oil content was obtained at full flowering stage (2.28% w/w). Among distillation methods, the highest essential oil content was obtained by hydro-distillation (2.27%) that was significant difference with other distillation method. There was no significant difference between essential oil composition at different plant growth stages. Also, thymol, p-cymene and -terpinene were the main components. The highest percentage of thymol was obtained by hydro-distillation. Conclusion: Generally, it can be concluded that harvesting of Th. daenensis at full flowering stage and extraction of its essential oil by hydro-distillation were more suitable for obtaining the higher oil content and thymol percentage.

Avanços na adubação nitrogenada em cobertura em milho poderão ser obtidos com a inclusão de características de solo como indicadores complementares da disponibilidade de N. Os objetivos deste estudo foram avaliar o potencial de uso, o nível crítico e o melhor estádio de desenvolvimento da cultura para determinação do teor de N-NO3- no solo, visando à predição da disponibilidade de N ao milho, e verificar se a determinação do teor de N-NH4+, em adição ao teor de N-NO3-, aumenta a eficiência na avaliação da disponibilidade de N. Para isso, realizou-se um experimento por dois anos agrícolas (2002/03 e 2003/04) em Argissolo Vermelho da Depressão Central do RS, no qual se realizou a simulação de diferentes níveis de disponibilidade de N no solo a partir da utilização de cinco doses de N (0, 50, 100, 200 e 300 kg ha-1), parte na semeadura (20 %) e o restante em cobertura (estádio V3). O experimento seguiu o delineamento de blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições, e nos dois anos agrícolas foram avaliados os teores de N-NO3-, de N-NH4+ e de N mineral (N-NO3- + N-NH4+) no solo (0-30 cm), em diferentes estádios de desenvolvimento (V3, V6, V10 e espigamento), e o rendimento de grãos do milho. Em geral, os teores de N-NO3- no solo foram sensíveis às doses de N aplicadas, com destaque para o estádio V6, no qual se verificou também a melhor relação desse elemento com o rendimento de grãos do milho. O nível crítico de N-NO3- no solo, a partir do qual a resposta à aplicação de N é improvável, foi estimado em 20 mg kg-1 para o solo estudado. A avaliação do teor de N-NH4+ do solo, em adição ao teor de N-NO3-, melhorou a predição da disponibilidade de N do solo, como evidenciado pela maior relação deste indicador com o rendimento de grãos, destacando a necessidade de desenvolvimento de kits de determinação rápida do teor de N mineral (N-NO3- + N-NH4+) no solo. Os resultados do uso de N-NO3- e N-NH4+ como indicadores complementares da disponibilidade de N do solo para o milho são promissores, e estudos deverão ser desenvolvidos em diferentes condições edafoclimáticas para confirmar a adequação de seu uso no manejo da adubação nitrogenada em cobertura no milho.Nitrogen fertilization applied as sidedressing in corn can be optimized by considering additional soil characteristics as complementary indicators of soil N availability. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the potential use, critical level and best sampling time of the soil nitrate (NO3--N) concentration to predict soil N availability in corn, as well as to verify if the determination of the soil ammonium (NH4+-N) concentration, in addition to NO3--N concentration, enhances the efficiency of N availability evaluation. A field experiment was conducted in two growing seasons (2002/03 and 2003/04) in Eldorado do Sul, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Different levels of soil N availability were simulated by the application of five N rates (0, 50, 100, 200, and 300 kg ha-1) 20 % at sowing and the rest sidedressed at V3. The experiment was structured in a randomized block design with four replications. NO3--N, NH4+-N and soil mineral N (NO3--N + NH4+-N) concentrations in the 0-30 cm soil layer at V3, V6, V10 and at silking, as well as corn grain yield were evaluated in both growing seasons. In general, NO3--N soil concentrations were sensitive to the applied N rates, mainly in V6 when the best relationship between NO3--N and corn grain yield was found. The critical level of soil NO3--N concentration, above which a response to N application is unlikely, was estimated at 20 mg kg-1 in the studied soil, at growth stage V6. The determination of soil NH4+-N concentration, in addition to soil NO3--N concentration, improved the prediction of N availability. A better relationship of soil mineral N (NH4+-N + NO3--N) than of NO3--N concentration with corn grain yield was observed. These results indicate that the development of kits for instant determination of soil mineral N concentration is necessary. NO3--N and NH4+-N as complementary indicators of soil N availability for corn appear promising and studies should be developed under different climate and soil conditions to adequate their use to the management of sidedressed N in corn.

Vegetation collection is one of the most effective scavenging methods but relevant studies are limited. It can be described by some abstract parameters such as collection rates and deposition fluxes within the canopy. In order to estimate the dry deposition within the canopy of particular matters (PMs) in Beijing, a highly particle-polluted city, and reveal the PM pollution-removal abilities of plants in wetlands and forests, concentration and meteorological data were collected during the daytime in an artificial forest and a wetland in the Olympic Park in Beijing. The dry depositions within the canopy and vegetation collection rates were calculated by a well-developed model and validated by measured deposition fluxes in 11 random experiment days. The experiment year was divided into three plant growth stages based on canopy density, and the day was divided into four different times. Two heights, 10 and 1.5 m, were defined in the forest while in the wetland, 0.5 and 1.5 m were defined. The results showed that in Beijing, the most severe pollution by PMs occurs in the non-leaf stage (NS), and the full-leaf stage (FS) is the cleanest stage. In NS, namely winter, more fossil fuel was used for worms in Beijing and peripheral areas and this might be the reason for the serious pollution condition. Within the canopy, PM deposition fluxes in the wetland are more than those in the forest, but the vegetation collection rates of the forest are higher. The lower temperature conditions led to more dry deposition, and the larger canopy contributed to the higher collection rates. During the daytime, over the year, the deposition of PM in three plant growth stages is NS ≥ half-leaf stages (HS) ≥ FS, whereas the deposition of PM is NS ≥ FS ≥ HS, and during the daytime, the maximum deposition fluxes occur in 6:00-9:00 in the wetland while the minimum deposition values occur in 15:00-18:00. Giant rosettes are ones of the most striking features of the vegetation in the high tropical Andes, with Coespeletia moritziana reaching the highest altitudes up to 4,600 m a.s.l. Different from other giant rosettes, this species grows on rock outcrops with poorly developed soils and where water availability may be limited. Two questions are addressed in this study: How does this species respond in terms of water relations to maintain favorable gas-exchange conditions? Considering that adult plants rely on a water-reserving central pith, how do early stages respond to this environment's extreme conditions? Water relations and gas-exchange studies were carried out on juveniles, intermediate and adult C. moritziana plants during wet and dry seasons in Páramo de Piedras Blancas at 4,200 m a.s.l. Adult plants maintained higher leaf water potentials (Ψ) during the wet season, however, no differences between stages were found for the dry season. Minimum dry season Ψ were never near the turgor loss point in any of the stages. Juveniles show a more strict stomatal control during the dry season to maintain a favorable water status. Net photosynthesis significantly decreased in intermediate and juvenile stages from wet to dry seasons. In the present study, models for estimation of the content of main secondary metabolites, namely hypericin, pseudohypericin, and hyperforin, were developed for Hypericum origanifolium Willd. (Guttiferae), Hypericum perfoliatum L., and Hypericum montbretii Spach., growing in Northern Turkey. Wild growing plants were harvested at vegetative, floral budding, full flowering, fresh fruiting, and mature fruiting stages and dissected into stem, leaf, and reproductive tissues. Actual secondary metabolite contents of plant materials were measured by a high performance liquid chromatography method. Multiple regression analysis using the Excel 2003 computer package was performed for each species and chemical separately to develop multiple regression models. The equation produced for predicting the content of secondary metabolites in different tissues of the species was formulized as: SMC = [ a + ( b1 × S) + ( b2 × L) + ( b3 × RP) + ( b4 × S²) + ( b5 × (1/RP))], where SMC is the secondary metabolite content of the whole plant, S is the secondary metabolite content of the stem, L is the secondary metabolite content of the leaf, RP is the secondary metabolite content of the reproductive parts, and a, b1, b2, b3, b4, and b5 are coefficients. The R2 coefficient values between predicted and observed contents of secondary metabolites were determined as 0.99 for H. origanifolium, 0.95–0.98 for H. perfoliatum, and 0.90–0.99 for H. montbretii. Of the total methane (CH4) emitted from a rice field during the growing season 60–90% is emitted through the rice plants. We determined the methane transport capacity (MTC) of rice plants at different physiological growth stages using an automatic measuring system under greenhouse conditions. A total of 12 cultivars (10 inbred varieties and 2 hybrids) were studied in sets of two experiments and was distinguished into three groups according to the patterns of MTC development. MTC is generally increasing from seedling stage to panicle initiation (PI), but differs in the development from PI to maturity. While the hybrid showed a gradual increase in MTC, the inbred cultivars showed either minor changes in MTC or a drastic decrease from flowering to maturity. Among tall cultivars, Dular showed the highest MTC, followed by B40; the lowest MTC was found in Intan. High-yielding dwarf cultivars showed MTC in the descending order of IR72 > IR52 > IR64 > PSBRc 20. New plant type cultivars showed very low MTC with IR65600 exhibiting the smallest MTC at PI, flowering, and maturity. Hybrids (Magat and APHR 2) showed the largest MTC that continued to increased with plant growth. The MTC patterns were attributed to growth parameters and the development of morphological characteristics of the aerenchyma. These results suggest that in tall, dwarf, and NPT cultivars, increase in root or aboveground biomass during initial growth determines a corresponding increase in MTC. Once aerenchyma has fully developed, further increase in plant biomass would not influence MTC. However, in the case of hybrids, a positive relationship of MTC with root + shoot biomass (r = 0.672, p ≥ 0.05) and a total plant biomass including grain (r = 0.849, p ≥ 0.01) indicate continuous development of aerenchyma with plant growth, resulting in enhanced MTC. In all cultivars, tiller number, but not height, was linearly related to MTC, indicating that the number of outlets/channels rather than plant size/biomass determines the transport of CH4. These results clearly demonstrate that rice cultivars differ significantly in MTC. Therefore, the use of high-yielding cultivars with low MTC (for example, PSBRc 20, IR65598, and IR65600) could be an economically feasible, environmentally sound, and promising approach to mitigate CH4 emissions from rice fields. A major portion (60–90%) of the methane (CH4) emitted from rice fields to the atmosphere is transported through the aerenchyma of the rice plants. However, a rapid and accurate method to study the CH4 transport capacity (MTC) of rice plants is not available. We developed a gas sampling and analytical device based on a closed two-compartment chamber technique and analyzed the enrichment of the CH4 mixing ratio inside the shoot compartment of cylindrical cuvettes enclosing individual rice plants under ambient conditions. The computer-controlled analytical system consists of a gas chromatograph (GC) and a pressure-controlled autosampler for eight cuvettes (seven for plants and one for CH4-calibration gas). The system automates closure and opening of plant cuvettes using pneumatic pressure, air sample collection and injection into the GC, and CH4 analysis. It minimizes sources of error during air sampling by continuously mixing headspace air of each cuvette, maintaining pressure and composition of the headspace inside the cuvettes, purging the dead volumes between the sampler induction tube and GC, and running a reference CH4-calibration gas sample in each cycle. Tests showed that the automated system is a useful tool for accurate sampling of headspace air of cylindrical cuvettes enclosing individual rice plants and enables rapid and accurate fully automated analysis of CH4 in the headspace air samples. A linear relationship was obtained between CH4 transported by rice plants of two cultivars (IR72, a high-yielding dwarf, and Dular, a traditional tall cultivar) and concentration of CH4 up to 7,500 ppm used for purging the nutrient culture solution surrounding the roots in the root compartment of the chamber. Further increase in CH4 emission by shoots was not observed at 10,000 ppm CH4 concentration in the root compartment of the chamber. The MTC of IR72 was measured at six development stages; it was lowest at seedling stage, increasing gradually until panicle initiation. There was no further change at flowering, but a marked decrease at maturity was noted. These results suggest that the plants have 45–246% greater potential to transport CH4 than the highest CH4 emission rates reported under field conditions, and plants would not emit CH4 at early growth and at a reduced rate close to ripening. Progressive soil compaction is a disadvantage of intensive tillage. Compaction exerts a negative impact on the physical properties of soil and decreases crop performance. The adverse effects of soil compaction can be mitigated by replacing conventional tillage with simplified tillage techniques. Simplified tillage exerts a protective effect on soil, reduces production costs and preserves agricultural ecosystems. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of compaction and different tillage methods on the bulk density and moisture content of soil. The experimental factors were as follows: Soil compaction before sowing (non-compacted control treatment and experimental treatments where soil was compacted after the harvest of the preceding crop) and four different methods of seedbed preparation in a three-field rotation system (winter oilseed rape, winter wheat, spring barley). The influence of compaction on the bulk density and moisture content of soil varied across the rotated crops and their developmental stages. Soil compaction had no significant effect on the analyzed parameters in the cultivation of winter oilseed rape. In treatments sown with winter wheat, soil compaction resulted in significantly lower soil density and significantly higher soil moisture content. In plots sown with spring barley, soil compaction led to a significant increase in the values of both parameters. The average bulk density of soil after various tillage operations in the examined crop rotation system ranged from 1.49–1.69 g·m−3 (winter oilseed rape), 1.47–1.59 g·m−3 (winter wheat), 1.47–1.61 g·m−3 (spring barley). The bulk density and moisture content of soil were lowest after conventional tillage (control treatment) and higher after simplified tillage. Regardless of soil compaction, the greatest reduction in winter oilseed rape yields was noted in response to skimming, harrowing and the absence of pre-sowing plowing. Spring barley yields were higher in non-compacted treatments, whereas the reverse was observed in winter wheat. Chisel plowing and single plowing induced the greatest decrease in wheat yields relative to conventional tillage. The rhizosphere is a key zone for pollutant removal in treatment wetlands; therefore, studies on microbial activity may provide helpful information for a better understanding of purification processes. We studied microbial activity in a vertical-downflow constructed wetland system treating waste activated sludge with high organic matter concentrations, under Mediterranean climate. The aims of the work were to study the influence of (i) the presence of plants, (ii) the plant species (Phragmites australis Cav., Typha latifolia L., Iris pseudacorus L.), and (iii) the plant growth stage (plant senescence and plant fast growing stage) on total respiration rate and phosphatase activity in the substrate (intented here as the solid support on which the plants grow). The presence of plants had a positive influence on microbial activity, since substrate respiration and both acid and alkaline phosphatase activity were always higher in planted than in unplanted mesocosms. Among the three tested species, Phragmites was the one that most stimulated both substrate respiration rate and phosphatase activity, followed by Typha and Iris. These differences of microbial activity between mesocosms were corresponding to differences of removal efficiency. Substrate respiration and phosphatase activity were of similar magnitude at the two growth stages, while the stimulating effect of plants seemed to have been delayed and microbial activity showed higher fluctuations at plant fast growing stage than at plant senescence.
