Abstract Osseointegration is a crucial property of biomaterials used for bone defect repair. While titanium is the gold standard in craniofacial surgeries, various polymeric biomaterials are being explored as alternatives. However, polymeric materials can be bioinert, hindering integration with surrounding tissues. In this investigation, plasma ion immersion implantation (PIII)-treated polyether ether ketone (PEEK) and polyether ketone (PEK) implants were assessed in a sheep maxilla and mandible model. Defects were filled with PIII-treated PEEK and PEK implants, produced through fused filament fabrication (FFF) and selective laser sintering (SLS), respectively. Positive controls were grade 23 titanium implants via selective laser melting, while untreated PEEK implants served as negative controls. Surface analyses using scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy revealed favorable properties. Osseointegration was qualitatively and quantitatively assessed at 8-, 10-, and 12-weeks post-implantation, showing significantly improved outcomes for both PIII-treated PEEK and PEK implants compared to untreated controls. The study suggests PIII treatment enhances FFF-printed PEEK’s osseointegration, and PIII-treated SLS-printed PEK achieves comparable osseointegration to 3D printed titanium. These findings underscore surface modification strategies’ potential for polymeric biomaterials, offering insights into developing alternative implant materials for craniofacial surgeries, with enhanced biocompatibility and osseointegration capabilities for improved clinical outcomes.

Magnesium biometals exhibit great potentials for orthopeadic applications owing to their biodegradability, bioactive effects and satisfactory mechanical properties. However, rapid corrosion of Mg implants in vivo combined with large amount of hydrogen gas evolution is harmful to bone healing process which seriously confines their clinical applications. Enlightened by the superior biocompatibility and corrosion resistance of passive titanium oxide layer automatically formed on titanium alloy, we employ the Ti and O dual plasma ion immersion implantation (PIII) technique to construct a multifunctional TiO 2 based nano-layer on ZK60 magnesium substrates for enhanced corrosion resistance, osteoconductivity and antimicrobial activity. The constructed nano-layer (TiO 2 /MgO) can effectively suppress degradation rate of ZK60 substrates in vitro and still maintain 94% implant volume after post-surgery eight weeks. In animal study, a large amount of bony tissue with increased bone mineral density and trabecular thickness is formed around the PIII treated group in post-operation eight weeks. Moreover, the newly formed bone in the PIII treated group is well mineralized and its mechanical property almost restores to the level of that of surrounding mature bone. Surprisingly, a remarkable killing ratio of 99.31% against S. aureus can be found on the PIII treated sample under ultra-violet (UV) irradiation which mainly attributes to the oxidative stress induced by the reactive oxygen species (ROS). We believe that this multifunctional TiO 2 based nano-layer not only controls the degradation of magnesium implant, but also regulates its implant-to-bone integration effectively. Rapid corrosion of magnesium implants is the major issue for orthopaedic applications. Inspired by the biocompatibility and corrosion resistance of passive titanium oxide layer automatically formed on titanium alloy, we construct a multifunctional TiO 2 /MgO nanolayer on magnesium substrates to simultaneously achieve superior corrosion resistance, satisfactory osteoconductivity in rat intramedullary bone defect model and excellent antimicrobial activity against S. aureus under UV irradiation. The current findings suggest that the specific TiO 2 /MgO nano-layer on magnesium surface can achieve the three objectives aforementioned and we believe this study can demonstrate the potential of biodegradable metals for future clinical applications. Copper nitride (Cu x N) thin films were prepared by plasma ion immersion implantation (PIII) then post-processed with oxygen plasma implantation at a voltage of − 1.5 kV. The resistive-switching properties of the Cu x N:O-based RRAM devices were studied with different oxygen implantation time from 0 to 20 min. The memory cells processed with oxygen plasma implantation for 5 min showed longest endurance performances, largest resistance window and highest yield. Linear fitting results of the electrical measurements indicated the formation of copper oxide (CuO) is benefit for prolonged cycle life of the Cu x N based RRAM devices, while increasing Cu 2 O species will lead to severe performance degradation. In this work, zero valent iron nanoparticles (Fe zero -NPs) and iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe ox -NPs) were synthesized at the subsurface and surface regions of titanium oxide coatings (TOCs) by plasma immersion ion implantation. This novel Fe-NPs/TOC system showed negligible iron releasing, great electron storage capability and excellent cytocompatibility in vitro. Importantly, the system showed selective antibacterial ability which can kill Staphylococcus aureus under dark conditions but has no obvious antibacterial effect against Escherichia coli . Owing to a bipolar Schottky barrier between Fe zero -NPs/TOC and Fe zero -NPs/Fe ox -NPs, electrons could be captured by the Fe zero -NPs bounded at the subsurface region of the coating. This electron storage capability of the Fe-NPs/TOC system induced extracellular electron transportation and accumulation of adequate valence-band holes (h + ) at the external side, which caused oxidation damage to S. aureus cells in the dark. No obvious biocide effect against E. coli resulted from lack of electron transfer ability between E. coli and substrate materials. We present a numerical model aimed to accurately simulate the plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) process in micro and nano-patterned Si samples. The code, based on the Monte Carlo approach, is designed to reproduce all the relevant physical phenomena involved in the process. The particle based simulation technique is fundamental to efficiently compute the material modifications promoted by the plasma implantation at the atomic resolution. The accuracy in the description of the process kinetic is achieved linking (one to one) each virtual Monte Carlo event to each possible atomic phenomenon (e.g. ion penetration, neutral absorption, ion induced surface modification, etc.). The code is designed to be coupled with a generic plasma status, characterized by the particle types (ions and neutrals), their flow rates and their energy/angle distributions. The coupling with a Poisson solver allows the simulation of the correct trajectories of charged particles in the void regions of the micro-structures. Passive devices using metal containing amorphous (a-C) films have been successfully fabricated. However, difficulties in the etching of these films as well as their inferior inertness compared to pure a-C films led us to study the electrical and optical properties of pure a-C films. The films were deposited using a filtered cathodic vacuum arc system (FCVA) in conjunction with high substrate pulse biasing. It is possible to control the sp2 content and hence the properties, by varying the substrate pulse bias voltage. In this study, the a-C films were prepared by varying the high substrate bias between 3 and 11 kV using a Plasma immersion ion implantation (PI3) system. Characterization of these samples gives us an indication about the suitability of the films for integrated passive devices and other applications. Four-point probe measurement has been carried out to study the resistivity of the films deposited on quartz and SiO2. The resistivity decreases with increasing pulse bias voltage, which is likely attributed to the sp2 fraction in the film as well as the substrates’ resistivity. The sp2 content in the films is estimated using XPS and Raman spectroscopy. Optical properties of the films are characterized using spectroscopic phase-modulated ellipsometry.
