14. On Intercell Interference and Its Cancellation in Cellular Multicarrier CDMA Systems

Abstract

Abstract The handling of intercell interference at the cell border area is a strong demand in future communication systems to guarantee efficient use of the available bandwidth. Therefore, this paper focuses on the application of iterative intercell interference cancellation schemes in cellular multicarrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) systems at the receiver side for the downlink. First, the influence of the interfering base stations to the total intercell interference is investigated. Then, different concepts for intercell interference cancellation are described and investigated for scenarios with several interfering cells. The first approach is based on the use of the hard decision of the demodulator to reconstruct the received signals. This does not require the higher amount of complexity compared to the second approach which is based on the use of the more reliable soft values from the decoding process. Furthermore, the extrinsic information as a reliability measure of this soft iterative cancellation process is investigated in more detail based on the geographical position of the mobile terminal. Both approaches show significant performance gains in the severe cell border area. With the soft intercell interference cancellation scheme, it is possible to reach the single-user bound. Therefore, the intercell interference can be almost eliminated.

Abstract

This paper covers location determination in wireless cellular networks based on time difference of arrival (TDoA) measurements in a factor graphs framework. The resulting nonlinear estimation problem of the localization process for the mobile station cannot be solved analytically. The well-known iterative Gauss-Newton method as standard solution fails to converge for certain geometric constellations and bad initial values, and thus, it is not suitable for a general solution in cellular networks. Therefore, we propose a TDoA positioning algorithm based on factor graphs. Simulation results in terms of root-mean-square errors and cumulative density functions show that this approach achieves very accurate positioning estimates by moderate computational complexity.

Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur Integritätsüberprüfung bei der Daten-kommunikation zwischen zwei Kommunikationsteilnehmern (11, 12), wobei ein Anforderungs-Funksignal (S1) generiert wird, bei dem ein Signalparameter be-züglich eines Referenzwertes variiert wird und basierend auf dem Anforderungs-Funksignal (S1) beim Empfang ein Antwort-Funksignal (S2) generiert wird, das die aktuelle Ortsposition des zweiten Kommunikationsteilnehmers (12) enthält. Bei Empfang des Antwort-Funksignals (S2) kann basierend auf den Ortspositionen und den Signallaufzeiten die Integrität des zweiten Kommunikationsteilnehmers (12) überprüft werden.

Abstract

Today’s and future communication systems in maritime rely on digital data communication between the ship and transceivers that are either on land, in air (satellite) or on sea. Analog voice communications is not an integrated part of future maritime communication system proposals. However, it is in general preserved in its functionality according to future maritime communication system proposals. In recent years parts of the dedicated voice spectrum was already reallocated for digital non-voice communication systems. Within this paper, we focus on the possible usage of digital voice communications in the maritime VHF frequency band regarding its technical feasibility, benefits, and challenges.

Abstract

In this paper we introduce a new location identification scheme based on the idea of Gray codes. The new scheme is particularly useful for applications which do have to cope with some level of inaccuracy or uncertainty and has a set of interesting properties. The applicability of the scheme is shown with some examples from the security domain.

Abstract

In this thesis a cellular multi-carrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) downlink system is investigated on the physical layer. This multi-carrier technique is a candidate for future mobile communications systems. First, the influence and characteristic of the emerging inter-cell interference at the critical cell border are described. This allows an appropriate modeling of the inter-cell interference. Three different approaches for handling inter-cell interference situations are developed. Coordination schemes of orthogonal resources from the network side are described such as frequency reuse or spreading codes. At the receiver soft iterative inter-cell interference cancellation schemes are introduced. Finally, cellular diversity is developed which combines macro diversity and transmit diversity techniques, e.g., cyclic delay diversity or the Alamouti scheme.
