The article analyzes how central and eastern European members of the EU relate to the main nodes of the EU's politics of memory, such as the first and second world wars, the Holocaust as Europe's negative founding myth, Soviet Communism being equally as criminal as the Nazi regime, expulsions as a pan-European trauma, the legacy of colonialism, Europe as a continent of immigration, and Europe's post-1945 success story. The author argues that mnemonic divides between the West and East in Europe remain visible despite the EU's efforts to bridge this gap over the twenty years since the 2004 enlargement. By applying the sociological concept of 'emplacement', this article analyses the creation of the 'District of Mutual Respect' in the old, neglected part of Wrocław (former German Breslau), a city which became Polish and lost its German population due to their forced migration after the Second World War. The District has in the last 20 years been transformed from slum to attractive environment and an important symbol of Wrocław's new identity and image. The District showcases the local authorities' new politics of cultural heritage and memory that emphasises intercultural dialogue and multiculturalism after decades of nationalist memory narratives and suppression of the German heritage. The authors outline a 'biography' of the District and analyse its functions. Furthermore, they apply Knudsen's and Kølvraa's concepts of repression, removal, reframing and re-emergence to evaluate to what extent that the District can be seen as a largely successful example of creating cultural heritage for a more cosmopolitan, inclusive future. The article discusses the nationalist right-wing memory discourses in contemporary East Central and Southeastern Europe. It points out their main features such as: nationalization, re-nationalization, securitization, victimization, and weaponization of the Communist and post-Communist past. The focus is to explain the historical and cultural roots of these memory discourses, which are of vital importance for understanding the rise of the rightwing populism in the region. Moreover, the article shows that the right-wing memory discourses include a number of elements that are typical for populism as political style, such as the appeal to “the people“ put against “the elite”, the Manichean vision of the world and strategic soliciting of emotions. I have analyzed the coverage of the 30th anniversary of the Roundtable Agreement and June elections in Polish newspapers of all political hues. Additionally, I scrutinized several official speeches held in connection with the commemorations. The goal of my inquiry has been to examine the uses of memory of 1989 in Polish politics of 2019 and highlight the strategic choices and constraints faced by mnemonic actors in this context. Thus, the study presented may be seen as a follow-up to Bernhard’s and Kubik’s investigation conducted ten years ago. However, this analysis expands the focus of Bernhard’s and Kubik’s work by paying special attention to cultural constraints on politics of memory. Thus, the aim is both to give insight into contemporary politics of memory in Poland in relation to the recent past and contribute to the more general understanding of how culture works in politics of memory. Nowadays the processes of crossing of different mammalian species are well characterized in light of genetics, and possibility of reproduction. Generally, lack detailed studies on changes in anatomy and histology of internal systems of hybrids. Bison bonasus hybrid is an interspecific species between the bull of European bison (Bison bonasus), and female of domesticated cattle (Bos taurus). To study the anatomy of tongue and distribution of lingual papillae on Bison bonasus hybrid tongue, a stereomicroscopic and scanning electron microscopic observations was conducted. We aimed to study the appearance of macro‐ and microscopic traits in relation to parental species and other bovids. Results indicate that Bison bonasus hybrid tongue possesses characteristic traits for parental species and ruminants from Bovidae family and also species‐specific features differ from mentioned animals. Specific new traits in hybrid are: V‐shaped arrangement of lingual papillae on ventral surface of the tongue, rosette arrangement of conical papillae on the top of lingual prominence, bigger number of vallate papillae and closer arrangement of vallate papillae. In hybrid observed also the appearance of combination of parental traits. Similar to European bison are rectangular shape of lingual prominence and absence of filiform papillae on the root of tongue. Presence of lateral processes of filiform papillae on the apex of tongue, and arrangement of vallate papillae into two rows corresponded to cattle. Development of new morphological features of tongue and its mucosal papillae in Bison bonasus hybrid opens new issue for future studies on organs of digestive system in animals after hybridization.
