Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico Podisus distinctus (Stal) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) is one of the most important species of predatory bugs in the Pentatomidae family. This natural predator can be created in the laboratory and used for biological control of defoliating insects. The use of natural enemies is recommended, especially generalist insets such as Podisus distinctus. Entomopathogenic fungi, with about 90 genera and over 700 species described, are responsible for 80% of diseases in insects and are used for biological control of pests. The fungi were the first pathogens to be used for microbial control, but insects possess defense mechanisms against micro-organisms through their cellular immune system. There is little known about the dynamic response of the cellular immune system in predatory stinkbugs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of entomopathogens on biological parameters of Podisus distinctus and characterize the cellular immune response against fungi Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae. The fungi were topically applied to the third instar nymphs of the predatory stinkbug with concentrations: 106, 107, and 108 conidia/mL of M. anisopliae and B. bassiana. The control was treated with sterile distilled water containing adhesive spreader Tween 80® / 0.01%. The parameters evaluated were the percentage of nymphal survival, duration of each stage, weight of females, and adult males originating from nymphs treated with fungal solutions. Couples were formed by concentration of fungal solutions B. bassiana and M. anisopliae. The parameters evaluated were pre-oviposition and oviposition, number of eggs, postures, nymphs per female, and longevity of adulthood for males and females. The immune response of the predatory stinkbug was studied in adults up to 48 hours old. These adults were treated topically with the deposition of a μL of the fungal suspensions in concentrations of 106, 107, and 108 conidia/mL; the control received a μL of spreader-sticker and distilled water. After 24, 48, 72, 96, and 120 hours of application the number of surviving P. distinctus males and females were evaluated. The hemocyte count of P. distinctus males and females were taken at each interval. The duration and survival of nymphs of the predatory stinkbug were negatively affected primarily by B. bassiana. The pre-oviposition period, number of eggs, and postures of nymphs were negatively affected after exposure to molds. The number of circulating hemocytes was lower in both genders after 24 hours of exposure to M. anisopliae. The survival of adult males and females of this predator stinkbug was lower in concentration of 108 conidia/mL of B. bassiana. Males and females of P. distinctus, after contact with B. bassiana, had fewer hemocytes. The negative influence of exposure to fungi B. bassiana and M. anisopliae indicates that although it is effective in controlling pests, these entomopathogenic fungi also negatively affect biological parameters of beneficial insects such as P. distinctus. Females and males of P. distinctus have an active immune system against the fungus M. anisopliae, but this was not enough to ensure their survival in the concentration of 108 conidia/mL of M. anisopliae and B. bassiana. Podisus distinctus (Stal) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) é uma das mais importantes espécies de percevejos predadores da família Pentatomidae. Esses inimigos naturais podem ser criados em laboratório e utilizados para o controle biológico de insetos desfolhadores. O uso de inimigos naturais nativos, especialmente zoofitofagos como P. distinctus é recomendável por serem generalistas. Fungos entomopatogênicos também são utilizados no controle biológico. Esses entomopatógenos, com cerca de 90 gêneros e mais de 700 espécies descritas, são utilizados no controle de insetos pragas e responsáveis por cerca de 80% das doenças causadas em insetos. Os fungos foram os primeiros patógenos a serem utilizados no controle microbiano, mas os insetos possuem mecanismos de defesa contra micro-organismos, através do sistema imune celular. A resposta e dinâmica do sistema imune celular em percevejos predadores são pouco conhecidas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o impacto dos entomopatógenos sobre parâmetros biológicos de Podisus distinctus e caracterizar a resposta imune celular contra os fungos Beauveria bassiana e Metarhizium anisopliae. Ninfas do terceiro instar do percevejo predador foram expostas topicamente as concentrações fúngicas (106, 107 e 108 conídios/mL) de M. anisopliae e B. bassiana e o controle tratado com água destilada esterilizada contendo espalhante adesivo Tween 80® a 0,01%. Os parâmetros avaliados foram porcentagem de sobrevivência ninfal, duração de cada estádio, peso de fêmeas e machos adultos oriundos de ninfas tratadas com as soluções fúngicas. Casais foram formados por concentração das soluções fúngicas de B. bassiana e M. anisopliae. Os parâmetros avaliados foram período de pré-oviposição e oviposição, número de ovos, posturas, ninfas por fêmea e longevidade da fase adulta de machos e fêmeas. A resposta imune do percevejo predador foi estudada com adultos de até 48h de idade. Esses adultos foram tratados topicamente com a deposição de um μL das suspensões do fungo nas concentrações de 106, 107, 108 conídios/mL e o controle recebeu um μL água destilada e espalhante adesivo. A sobrevivência e o número de hemócitos de machos e fêmeas de P. distinctus foram avaliados após 24, 48, 72, 96 e 120 horas da aplicação do fungo. A duração e a sobrevivência das ninfas do percevejo predador foram afetadas negativamente principalmente pelo B. bassiana. O período de pré oviposição, número de ovos e posturas, ninfas afetados negativamente após a exposição aos fungos. O número de hemócitos circulantes foi menor em ambos os gêneros após 24 horas da exposição ao M. anisopliae. A sobrevivência de fêmeas e machos adultos desse percevejo predador foi menor na concentração de 108 conídios/mL de B. bassiana. Machos e fêmeas de P. distinctus, após o contato com B. bassiana, apresentaram menor número de hemócitos. A influência negativa da exposição aos fungos B. bassiana e M. anisopliae indica que, apesar de eficientes no controle de insetos pragas, esses fungos entomopatogênicos, também, afetam negativamente parâmetros biológicos de insetos benéficos como P. distinctus. Fêmeas e machos de P. distinctus possuem sistema imune ativo contra o fungo M. anisopliae, mas isto não foi suficiente para garantir sua sobrevivência na concentração de 108 conídios/mL de M. anisopliae e B. bassiana.

Heraclides anchisiades capys (Hübner, [1809]) (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae) is an abundant insect pest on crops of Citrus spp. (Rutaceae) in Brazil and pupae of this defoliator could be used for the mass rearing of parasitoids. The aim of this study was to evaluate the parasitism of Palmistichus elaeisis Delvare & LaSalle, 1993 (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) on H. anchisiades capys pupae in the laboratory. Twenty 1-day-old H. anchisiades capys pupae were individualized in test tubes (14 cm length x 2.2 cm diameter) with a drop of honey as food and with ten mated P. elaeisis females for ten days. The duration of the life cycle (egg to adult), emergence rate, total individuals emerged per pupa, sex ratio, size of the body and longevity of P. elaeisis males and females emerged from H. anchisiades capys pupae were evaluated. The duration of the life cycle of P. elaeisis was 21.15 +/- 0.15 days. Forty percent of H. anchisiades capys pupae showed emergence of parasitoids, with an average of 323 +/- 38 individuals from each one and a sex ratio of 0.95 +/- 0.02. The total number of parasitoids emerged was 2,584 individuals. The size of the body and the head capsule (mm) of female and male P. elaeisis progeny were 1.92 +/- 0.04; 0.52 +/- 0.02 and 1.28 +/- 0.04; 0.40 +/- 0.02, respectively. The average longevity was 23.72 +/- 1.15 days for females and 30.1 +/- 2.42 days for males of P. elaeisis. Heraclides anchisiades capys, abundant on crops of Citrus spp. in Brazil, has potential to be used as a host for mass rearing of P. elaeisis in the laboratory for biological control programs.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico The subfamily Asopinae presents important species of predators, as Supputius cincticeps (Stal) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae). These stinkbug present potential for the biological control of Lepidoptera defoliators in eucalyptus plantations in Brazil.Botanical insecticides, mainly neem (Azadirachta indica), are alternative for the control of herbivore insects of agroforestry system, but the impact of that botanical insecticide in stinkbug predators is poor studied. This research evaluated the impact of the neem in the survival of nymphs, adult s morphometry, in the reproductive and digestive tract and cellular immune response of S. cincticeps. About 30% of the nymphs of that predator exposed to 1.0% neem solution had difficulties in the ecdysis from the third to the fourth instar. Of the total adult survivors of nymphs treated with this solution, 10% had deformities in the pronotum and wings. This solution insecticide reduced the percentage of living individuals by isntar. Females of S. cincticeps presented shorter ovariole (6.4mm), lower oocytes (22.4) and oocytes/ovarioles more developed (3.86) with 1.0% neem oil. Adult males of S. cincticeps, from second instar of nymphs of treated topically with 0.5 and 1.0 % had area of the testicles, similar (0.67 and 0.69 mm) respectively but smaller than in the control (0.75 mm2). Changes in in the digestive tract were not observed in S.cincticeps exposed to neem solutions. The adult of S.cincticeps cellular immune system was activated after four hours of the ingestion of the oil of neem seed. Three haemocytes types,plasmatocytes, prohemocytes and granulocytes were observed,but just, the plasmatocytes had the cellular dynamics affected after four hours of the ingestion of neen solution. The oil of neem seeds alter the morphometry of the reproductive system and it doesn't cause alterations in the digestive system of the stinkbug S. cincticeps. A subfamília Asopinae possui espécies importantes de percevejos predadores, como Supputius cincticeps (Stal) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae). Estes percevejos apresentam potencial para o controle biológico de lepidópteros desfolhadores em plantações de eucalipto no Brasil. Inseticidas botânicos, como produtos do neem (Azadirachta indica), representam outra alternativa para o controle de insetos herbívoros de sistemas agroflorestais, mas o impacto desse inseticida botânico em percevejos predadores é pouco conhecido. Esse estudo objetivou avaliar o impacto do neem na sobrevivência de ninfas, morfometria de adultos, no aparelho reprodutor, sistema digestivo e imune celular de S. cincticeps. Cerca de 30% das ninfas desse predador submetidas a solução a 1,0% de neem tiveram dificuldades na ecdise do terceiro para o quarto estádio. Do total de adultos sobreviventes, de ninfas tratadas com essa solução, 10% apresentaram deformidades no pronoto e asas. Essa solução inseticida reduziu a porcentagem de indivíduos vivos por instar. Fêmeas de S. cincticeps apresentaram menor comprimento do ovaríolo (6,4mm), menor número total de ovócitos (22,4) e de ovócitos por ovaríolo mais desenvolvido (3,86) com óleo de neem a 1,0%. Machos adultos de S. cincticeps, de ninfas de segundo estádio tratadas topicamente com a solução a 1,0 e 0,5%, tiveram área dos testículos, semelhantes (0,67 e 0,69 mm) respectivamente e menor que no controle (0,75 mm2). Esse percevejo predador não apresentou alterações morfológicas no sistema digestivo. O sistema imune celular de adultos de S. cincticeps foi ativado após quatro horas da ingestão do óleo de semente de neem. Três tipos de hemócitos: plasmatócitos, prohemocitos e granulócitos foram observados, mas apenas, os plasmatócitos tiveram a dinâmica celular afetada após quatro horas da ingestão da solução inseticida. O óleo de semente de neem altera a morfometria do sistema reprodutivo e não causa alterações no sistema digestivo do percevejo Supputius cincticeps.

Tapirira guianensis Aubl. is a tree species important for wood, phytoterapy and restoration of degraded areas. The objective of this work was to characterize the structure of flowers, fruits and seeds. This study was carried out in the Agronomy Department of the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS), São Cristóvão, SE, Brazil. In the floral structure analysis, individuals were identified having male and female structures with characterization of androgynous type; plants with male and androgynous flowers, characterizing the andromonoecious type; and plants with male flowers. The fruits of pau-pombo are ellipsoid drupes, almost spherical and indehiscent, with ellipsoid seeds, no endosperm; with epigeous-phanerocotyl germination. Tapirira guianensis Aubl. é uma espécie arbórea importante para uso madeireiro, medicinal e para ser empregada na recuperação de áreas, cujos ecossistemas estejam degradados. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi caracterizar a estrutura de flores, frutos e sementes. Este estudo foi desenvolvido no Departamento de Engenharia Agronômica (DEA-UFS) no Campus da Universidade Federal de Sergipe (UFS), localizado no município de São Cristóvão, SE, Brasil. Na análise da estrutura floral, foram identificados indivíduos com flores contendo estruturas masculinas e femininas, caracterizando o tipo andrógino; plantas com flores masculinas e andróginas, caracterizando o tipo andromonóico; e plantas com flores masculinas. O fruto de pau-pombo é uma drupa elipsóide quase esférica e indeiscente; possui semente com forma elipsoidal, sem endosperma; com germinação epígea-fanerocotiledonar. Piracicaba, SP

Resumo. Entre os anos de 2005 e 2007, foram observados mensalmente os danos causados por lagartas sobre as plantas Erythrina velutina (Willd.) no município de São Cristovão, Sergipe, Brasil. As mudas com os danos foram levadas ao laboratório, com o objetivo de caracterizar os danos e identificar a praga. Esta foi identificada como Agathodes designalis (Guenée), encontrada em 35% das plantas em 2005 e 49% em 2007, causando danos da base para o ápice. Este é o primeiro registro de A. designalis atacando E. velutina no Estado de Sergipe, Brasil.Registration of the Agathodes designalis (Guenée, 1854) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) in Mulungu (Erythrina velutina) (Willd.) in the Nursery of Seedlings of Native Forest Species in São Cristovão’s District, Sergipe, BrazilAbstract. Among the years 2005 to 2007, it was observed monthly the damaged caused by caterpillars on the Erythrina velutina (Willd.) plants in São Cristovão’s District, Sergipe, Brazil. The damaged seedlings were taken to the laboratory, with the objective to characterize the damage and identify the insect pest. It was identified as Agathodes designalis (Guenée), found in 35% of plants in 2005 and 49% in 2007, causing damage to the base for the higher. It was the first record of the A. designalis attacking on E. velutina in Sergipe State, Brazil.
