We study the system size dependence of heavy quark (HQ) observables at a center of mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=5.02$ TeV to explore whether it can provide further constraints on the physical processes which are involved: energy loss of HQs in the quark gluon plasma (QGP), hadronization and hadronic rescattering. We use the EPOS4HQ approach to study p-p and 0-10\% central O-O, Ar-Ar, Kr-Kr and Pb-Pb reactions and investigate in detail the momentum change of heavy quarks from creation until their detection as part of a hadron as well as the enhancement of heavy baryon production at low $p_T$. We investigate furthermore the origin and the system size dependence of the azimuthal correlations between the heavy quark $Q$ and the heavy antiquark $\bar Q$ and how one can bypass the problem that correlations are washed out due to the combinatorial background. We conclude that a systematic study of the system size dependence of the momentum loss allows to separate the momentum loss due to the passage through the QGP from the momentum change due to hadronization and the $Q\bar Q$ correlations allow to gain inside into the different pQCD processes in which the heavy quarks are created.

We present a new model for jet quenching in a quark gluon plasma (QGP). The jet energy loss has two steps. The initial jet parton with a high virtuality loses energy by a perturbative vacuum parton shower modified by medium interactions until it becomes on shell. Subsequent energy loss originates from elastic and radiative collisions with the medium constituents. Coherency of the radiative collisions is achieved by starting with virtual gluons that act as field dressing of the initial jet parton. These are formed according to a Gunion-Bertsch seed. The QCD version of the LPM effect is obtained by increasing the phase of the virtual gluons through elastic scatterings with the medium. Above a phase threshold, the virtual gluons will be formed and can produce coherent radiation themselves. The model has been implemented in a Monte Carlo code and is validated by successfully reproducing the BDMPS-Z prediction for the energy spectrum of radiated gluons in a static medium. Results for the more realistic case, in which the assumptions of the BDMPS-Z approach are released, are also shown. We investigate the influence of various parameters on the energy spectrum and the transverse momentum distribution, such as the in-medium quark masses, the energy transfer in the recoil process, and the phase accumulation criteria, especially for low and intermediate energy gluons.

We present numerical solutions in a one-dimensional setting of quantum master equations that have been recently derived. We focus on the dynamics of a single heavy quark-antiquark pair in a Quark-Gluon Plasma in thermal equilibrium, in the so-called quantum Brownian regime where the temperature of the plasma is large in comparison with the spacing between the energy levels of the $Q\bar{Q}$ system. The one-dimensional potential used in the calculations has been adjusted so as to produce numbers that are relevant for the phenomenology of the charmonium. The equations are solved using different initial states and medium configurations. Various temperature regimes are studied and the effects of screening and collisions thoroughly analyzed. Technical features of the equations are analyzed. The contributions of the different operators that control the evolution are discussed as a function of the temperature. Some phenomenological consequences are addressed.

Employing the recently developed EPOS4HQ event generator, we study the production of different heavy-flavor mesons in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies. The transverse momentum spectra, yield ratio, nuclear modification factor, and elliptic flow can be well described in the EPOS4HQ framework. We furthermore analyze the processes which modify these observables as compared to $pp$ collisions and are at the origin of the experimentally determined nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$., Comment: 17 pages, 25 figures

We investigate the charmonium and bottomonium production in $pp$ collisions using the Wigner densities formalism. The Wigner density of the quarkonia is approximated by analytical 3-D isotropic harmonic oscillator Wigner densities with the same root-mean-square radius given by the solution of the Schr\"odinger equation. This approach reproduces quite well the available experimental transverse momentum and rapidity distributions., Comment: Proceedings QM2023

Heavy-flavor hadrons produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions are a sensitive probe for studying hadronization mechanisms of the quark-gluon-plasma. In this work, we survey how different transport models for the simulation of heavy-quark diffusion through a quark-gluon plasma in heavy-ion collisions implement hadronization and how this affects final-state observables. Utilizing the same input charm-quark distribution in all models at the hadronization transition, we find that the transverse-momentum dependence of the nuclear modification factor of various charm hadron species has significant sensitivity to the hadronization scheme. In addition, the charm-hadron elliptic flow exhibits a nontrivial dependence on the elliptic flow of the hadronizing partonic medium., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures

The creation of a quark-gluon plasma (QGP) is expected in heavy ion collisions. It came as a surprise that proton-proton collisions at ultrarelativistic energies show as well a ``QGP-like'' behavior and signs of the creation of a fluid, although the corresponding system size is not more than a few cubic femtometers. Even more surprisingly, also heavy flavor particles seem to be part of the fluid or at least interact with it. In this paper, we will investigate in a quantitative way this ``collective behavior'' of heavy flavor, by employing the newly developed EPOS4HQ approach, which has proven to be compatible with basic experimental data of light flavor hadrons. We will investigate all observables, which may manifest collectivity, as particle spectra, elliptic flow, baryon-to-meson ratios, and two-particle correlations, and compare the results with experimental data. We will try to disentangle initial state effects, those being due to interactions between charm quarks and plasma partons, and final state effects (hadronization)., Comment: 9 pages, 14 figures

We study bottomonium $b\bar b$ production in pp collisions as well as in heavy-ion collisions, using a quantal density matrix approach. The initial bottom (anti)quarks are provided by the PYTHIA event generator. We solve the Schr\"odinger equation for the $b\bar b$ pair, identifying the potential with the free energy, calculated with lattice QCD, to obtain the temperature dependent $b\bar b$ density matrix as well as the dissociation temperature. The formation of bottomonium is given by projection of the bottomonium density matrix onto the density matrix of the system. With this approach we describe the rapidity and transverse momentum distribution of the $\Upsilon $(nS) in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=$ 5.02 TeV extending a similar calculation for the charmonium states \cite{Song:2017phm}. We employ the Remler formalism to study the $b\bar b$ production in heavy ion collisions in which the heavy quarks scatter elastically with partons from the quark gluon plasma (QGP). The elastic scattering of heavy (anti)quark in QGP is realized by the dynamical quasi-particle model (DQPM) and the expanding QGP is modeled by PHSD. We find that a reduction to 10 \% of the scattering cross section for a (anti)bottom quark with a QGP parton reproduces the experimental data. This suggests that due to color neutrality the scattering cross section of the small $b\bar b$ system with a parton is considerably smaller than twice the bottom-parton scattering cross section., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

We present a new model for the creation of \J mesons in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions, which allows to follow the individual heavy quarks from their creation until the detector through the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP), which is formed in these collisions and described by the EPOS2 event generator. The \cc quarks interact via a potential, based on results of lattice gauge calculations. The annihilation and creation of \J is described by a density matrix approach whose time evolution is studied in the expanding system. The comparison with PbPb data at $\sqrt{s}$=5.02 TeV shows that this model can describe simultaneously the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ and the elliptic flow $v_2$ of the \J at low transverse momen, Comment: Computational error corrected. final version accepted by PRC

Master equations of the Lindblad type have recently been derived to describe the dynamics of quarkonium states in the quark-gluon plasma. Because their full resolution in three dimensions is very challenging, the equations are often reduced to one dimension. The main ingredient of these equations is the complex potential that describes the binding of the heavy quark-antiquark pairs and their interactions with the medium. In this work, we propose a one-dimensional complex potential parameterized to reproduce at best two key properties -- the temperature-dependent masses of the eigenstates and their decay widths -- of a three-dimensional lattice QCD inspired potential. Their spectral decompositions are calculated to check their compatibility with the positivity of the master equations., Comment: 24 pages, 48 figures

Prospects for quarkonium-production studies accessible during the upcoming high-luminosity phases of the CERN Large Hadron Collider operation after 2021 are reviewed. Current experimental and theoretical open issues in the field are assessed together with the potential for future studies in quarkonium-related physics. This will be possible through the exploitation of the huge data samples to be collected in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions, both in the collider and fixed-target modes. Such investigations include, among others, those of: (i) J/psi and Upsilon produced in association with other hard particles; (ii) chi(c,b) and eta(c,b) down to small transverse momenta; (iii) the constraints brought in by quarkonia on gluon PDFs, nuclear PDFs, TMDs, GPDs and GTMDs, as well as on the low-x parton dynamics; (iv) the gluon Sivers effect in polarised-nucleon collisions; (v) the properties of the quark-gluon plasma produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions and of collective partonic effects in general; and (vi) double and triple parton scatterings., Comment: Latex, 115 pages, 55 figures, 4 tables. v2: Review published in Progress in Particle and Nuclear Physics

We report on a benchmark calculation of the in-medium radiative energy loss of low-virtuality jet partons within the EPOS3-Jet framework. The radiative energy loss is based on an extension of the Gunion-Bertsch matrix element for a massive projectile and a massive radiated gluon. On top of that, the coherence (LPM effect) is implemented by assigning a formation phase to the trial radiated gluons in a fashion similar to the approach in JHEP 07 (2011), 118, by Zapp, Stachel and Wiedemann. In a calculation with a simplified radiation kernel, we reproduce the radiation spectrum reported in the approach above. The radiation spectrum produces the LPM behaviour $dI/d\omega\propto\omega^{-1/2}$ up to an energy $\omega=\omega_c$, when the formation length of radiated gluons becomes comparable to the size of the medium. Beyond $\omega_c$, the radiation spectrum shows a characteristic suppression due to a smaller probability for a gluon to be formed in-medium. Next, we embed the radiative energy loss of low-virtuality jet partons into a more realistic "parton gun" calculation, where a stream of hard partons at high initial energy $E_\text{ini}=100$ GeV and initial virtuality $Q^2=E^2$ passes through a box of QGP medium with a constant temperature. At the end of the box evolution, the partons are hadronized using Pythia 8, and the jets are reconstructed with the FASTJET package. We find that the full jet energy loss in such scenario approaches a ballpark value reported by the ALICE collaboration. We study how heavy quark dynamics is affected by the nature of the bulk evolution of the QCD matter, the initial condition of the system, and the treatment of elementary interactions between heavy quarks and the surrounding medium. For the same initial condition and the same QGP expansion scenario we discuss the consequences of the assumption of a local equilibrium by comparing the consequences for the nuclear modification factor and the elliptic flows of charm quarks. For this purpose we employ the parton-hadron-string dynamics (PHSD), which is an off-shell microscopic transport approach, as well as the linearized-Boltzmann (LB) scheme obtained by coarse graining the PHSD bulk and assuming local equilibrium for the interactions of the charm quarks with the bulk. The $R_{\rm AA}$ of charm quarks stemming from the later LB approach is also compared to a genuine fluid dynamics evolution initiated by the coarse grained PHSD, which allows to further assess the consequences of reducing the full n-body dynamics. We then proceed to a systematic comparison of PHSD with MC@HQ, another transport model for heavy flavors which also relies on LB approach. In particular, we investigate the consequences for the nuclear modification factor of charm quarks if we vary separately the initial heavy quark distribution function in matter, the expansion dynamics of the QGP and the elementary interactions of heavy quarks of these models. We find that the results for both models vary significantly depending on the details of the calculation. However, both models achieve very similar predictions for key heavy quark observables for certain combinations of initial condition, bulk evolution and interactions. EPOS3-Jet is an integrated framework for jet modelling in heavy ion collisions, where the initial hard (jet) partons are produced along with soft (medium) partons in the initial state EPOS approach. The jet partons then propagate in the hydrodynamically expanding medium. The energy and momentum lost by the jet partons is added to the hydrodynamic medium via the source terms. The full evolution proceeds in a concurrent mode, without separating hydrodynamic and jet parts. The EPOS-HQ model is a framework designed for predicting heavy-flavor observables both in p-p, p-A and A-A collisions. It results from the integration of the MC$@_s$HQ and EPOS3 codes and should supersede predictions made with each of these two. In this contribution, we briefly present the new ingredients of the EPOS-HQ model as well as some preliminary results. I review the current status and some prospects of theoretical studies on open heavy flavor physics in nuclear collisions at RHIC and LHC energies., Comment: Proceedings from Quark Matter 2018 plenary talk (Venezia)

Several transport models have been employed in recent years to analyze heavy-flavor meson spectra in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Heavy-quark transport coefficients extracted from these models with their default parameters vary, however, by up to a factor of 5 at high momenta. To investigate the origin of this large theoretical uncertainty, a systematic comparison of heavy-quark transport coefficients is carried out between various transport models. Within a common scheme devised for the nuclear modification factor of charm quarks in a brick medium of a quark-gluon plasma, the systematic uncertainty of the extracted drag coefficient among these models is shown to be reduced to a factor of 2, which can be viewed as the smallest intrinsic systematical error band achievable at present time. This indicates the importance of a realistic hydrodynamic evolution constrained by bulk hadron spectra and of heavy-quark hadronization for understanding the final heavy-flavor hadron spectra and extracting heavy-quark drag coefficient. The transverse transport coefficient is less constrained due to the influence of the underlying mechanism for heavy-quark medium interaction. Additional constraints on transport models such as energy loss fluctuation and transverse-momentum broadening can further reduce theoretical uncertainties in the extracted transport coefficients., Comment: 20 pages in ReVTex with 11 figures, final version to appear in PRC

Energy-loss studies of hard particle probes produced in heavy ion collisions have often been used to get information on the interactions within the medium of a quark-gluon plasma (QGP). However, with the study of in-medium energy-loss of individual particles alone, it remains still ambiguous, whether the occured decrease in particle energy is caused by predominantly radiative or collisional energy-loss mechanisms. Focusing on the in-medium energy-loss of hard jet-partons, we propose additional studies of the angular jet-structure as a means to further constrain the energy-loss mechanisms.

In this talk we will discuss the recent advances in describing heavy-quark dynamics in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP), which evolves hydrodynamically. We present an analysis of the comparison between 2nd and 3rd flow harmonics of $\pi$, protons and D mesons produced in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. We advocate that such an analysis could turn out to be a good strategy in order to quantify the off-equilibrium dynamics of heavy flavor at lower transverse momentum $p_T$., Comment: QM 2017 proceedings

Two-particle correlations obtained from parton showers that pass the hot and dense medium of the quark gluon plasma (QGP) can be used as an alternative observable, in addition to the combination of the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ and the elliptic flow $v_2$, to study the mechanisms of in-medium heavy quark energy-loss. In particular, angular correlations represent a promising tool to distinguish between energy loss due to collisional and radiative interactions of jet and medium particles. To this end, parton cascades were created in Monte-Carlo simulations, where individual particles can undergo both parton splitting as well as an effective jet-medium interaction. A first model simulates the effects of induced radiations on parton cascades. Its consequences on angular correlations of partons within jets were studied in detail, with particular focus on angular broadening. The results can be compared to a second model that effectively describes elastic scatterings of jet and medium particles.

Heavy-quark observables in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions, like the nuclear modification factor and the elliptic flow, give insight into the mechanisms of high-momentum suppression and low-momentum thermalization of heavy quarks. Here, we present a global study of these two observables within a coupled approach of the heavy-quark propagation in a realistic fluid dynamical medium, MC@sHQ+EPOS2, and compare to experimental data from RHIC and LHC experiments. The heavy quarks scatter elastically and inelastically with the quasiparticles of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP), which are represented consistently with the underlying equation of state. We examine two scenarios: first, we interpret the lattice QCD equation of state as a sum of partonic and hadronic contributions, and second, as a gas of massive partonic quasiparticles. It is observed that independent of their momentum the energy loss of heavy quarks depends strongly on how the lattice QCD equation of state is translated into degrees of freedom of the QGP.

We treat the question of bottomonia suppression in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions (URHIC) as a dynamical open quantum problem, tackled for the first time using the Schr\"odinger-Langevin equation. Coupling this equation to the EPOS2 event generator, predictions are made for the nuclear modification factor of $\Upsilon (1S)$ and $\Upsilon (2S)$., Comment: proceedings of Quark Matter 2015 conference, submitted to Nucl. It is the central goal of our studies to describe parton fragmentation in the hot and dense medium of a quark gluon plasma (QGP). Under the assumption that the medium is not static and homogeneous, knowledge about the temporal evolution of the processes involved can be of essential importance. Therefore, parton fragmentation has been studied with a Monte-Carlo algorithm that approximates the DGLAP-evolution of fragmentation functions via a set of parton cascades. The presented work consists mainly of implementations of this kind of algorithm and the application of a simple approximation, which gives the time development of partonic cascades. As approximations to the parton-splitting processes of gluons and massless quarks in the vacuum two different schemes with the same leading-log contributions are investigated. Furthermore, the temporal evolutions of quantities related to partonic cascades have been examined: To our understanding, especially variables (like, e.g.: parton multiplicities or virtualities) that give insight, when parton splittings take place, are of great interest, as they allow identifying the parts of the fragmentation process that will be most affected by medium interactions., Comment: part of the proceedings of the EPS-HEP 2015 conference in Vienna, 6 pages

The Schr\"odinger-Langevin (SL) equation is considered as an effective open quantum system formalism suitable for phenomenological applications involving a quantum subsystem interacting with a thermal bath. We focus on two open issues relative to its solutions: the stationarity of the excited states of the non-interacting subsystem when one considers the dissipation only and the thermal relaxation toward asymptotic distributions with the additional stochastic term. We first show that a proper application of the Madelung/polar transformation of the wave function leads to a non zero damping of the excited states of the quantum subsystem. We then study analytically and numerically the SL equation ability to bring a quantum subsystem to the thermal equilibrium of statistical mechanics. To do so, concepts about statistical mixed states and quantum noises are discussed and a detailed analysis is carried with two kinds of noise and potential. We show that within our assumptions the use of the SL equation as an effective open quantum system formalism is possible and discuss some of its limitations., Comment: 38 pages, 31 figures

We investigate the elliptic and the triangular flow of heavy mesons in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC. The dynamics of heavy quarks is coupled to the locally thermalized and fluid dynamically evolving quark-gluon plasma. The elliptic flow of $D$ mesons and the centrality dependence measured at the LHC is well reproduced for purely collisional and bremsstrahlung interactions. Due to the event-by-event fluctuating initial conditions from the EPOS2 model, the $D$ meson triangular flow is predicted to be nonzero at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV and $\sqrt{s}=2.76$ TeV. We study the centrality dependence and quantify the contributions stemming from flow of the light bulk event and the hadronization process. The flow coefficients as response to the initial eccentricities behave differently for heavy mesons than for light hadrons due to their inertia. Higher-order flow coefficients of heavy flavor become important in order to quantify the degree of thermalization.

We investigate the charm-quark propagation in the QGP media produced in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC. Purely collisional and radiative processes lead to a significant suppression of final $D$-meson spectra at high transverse momentum and a finite flow of heavy quarks inside the fluid dynamical evolution of the light partons. The $D$-meson nuclear modification factor and the elliptic flow are studied at two collision energies. We extend the Gunion Bertsch calculation of gluon radiation in single scattering to the case of finite mass quarks. This case applies to the radiative energy-loss of heavy quarks of intermediate energies propagating in a quark gluon plasma. We discuss more specifically the dead cone effect as well as the mass hierarchy of the collisional and radiative energy loss and provide some predictions for observables sensitive to the mass hierarchy of energy loss in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions., Comment: Proceedings of the 24th Quark Matter conference, 19-24 May 2014, Darmstadt, Germany. 4 pp

In this study we evaluate the dynamical collisional energy loss of heavy quarks, their interaction rate as well as the different transport coefficients (drag and diffusion coefficients, $\hat{q}$, etc). We calculate these different quantities for i) perturbative partons (on-shell particles in the vacuum with fixed and running coupling) and ii) for dynamical quasi-particles (off-shell particles in the QGP medium at finite temperature $T$ with a running coupling in temperature as described by the dynamical quasi-particles model). We use the perturbative elastic $(q(g) Q \rightarrow q (g) Q)$ cross section for the first case, and the Infrared Enhanced Hard Thermal Loop cross sections for the second. The results obtained in this work demonstrate the effects of a finite parton mass and width on the heavy quark transport properties and provide the basic ingredients for an explicit study of the microscopic dynamics of heavy flavors in the QGP - as formed in relativistic heavy-ion collisions - within transport approaches developed previously by the authors., Comment: 32 pages, 30 figures

The suppression of D mesons in non-central heavy-ion collisions is investigated. The anisotropy in collisions at finite impact parameter leads to an ordering of all-angle, in- and out-of-plane nuclear modification factors due to the different in-medium path lengths. Within our MC@sHQ+EPOS model of heavy-quark propagation in the QGP we demonstrate that fluctuating initial conditions lead to an effective reduction of the energy loss of heavy quarks, which is seen in a larger nuclear modification factor at intermediate and high transverse momenta. We study the heavy quark/antiquark pair dynamics in strongly-coupled quark gluon plasma. A semi-classical approach, based on the Wigner distribution and Langevin dynamics, is applied to a color screened $c{\bar c}$ pair, in a hydrodynamically cooling fireball, to evaluate the total $J/\psi$ suppression at both RHIC and LHC energies. Observables of heavy-quark azimuthal correlations in heavy-ion collisions are a new and promising tool for the investigation of the in-medium energy loss. We explore the potential of these observables to discriminate the collisional and radiative contributions within a hybrid EPOS+MC@sHQ transport approach., Comment: final version of proceedings for SQM 2013, C13-07-22.1

Employing scalar QCD we study the gluon emission of heavy quarks created by the interaction with light quarks considered as dynamical scattering centers. We develop approximation formulas for the high energy limit and study when the full calculation reaches this high energy limit. For zero quark masses and in the high energy limit our model reproduces the Gunion-Bertsch results. We justify why scalar QCD represents a good approximation to the full QCD approach for the energy loss of heavy quarks. In the regime of accessible phenomenology we observe that the emission at small transverse momentum (dead cone effect) is less suppressed than originally suggested. We also investigate the influence of a finite gluon mass on the discussed results.

We investigate how the possible existence of hadronic bound states above the deconfinement transition temperature $T_c$ affects heavy-quark observables like the nuclear modification factor, the elliptic flow and azimuthal correlations. Lattice QCD calculations suggest that above $T_c$ the effective degrees of freedom might not be exclusively partonic but that a certain fraction of hadronic degrees of freedom might already form at higher temperatures. This is an interesting questions by itself but also has a strong influence on other probes of the strongly interacting matter produced in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. A substantial fraction of hadronic bound states above $T_c$ reduces on average the interaction of the heavy quarks with colored constituents of the medium. We find that all studied observables are highly sensitive to the active degrees of freedom in the quark-gluon plasma.

In this paper we study the azimuthal correlations of heavy quarks in Pb+Pb collisions with $\sqrt{s}=2.76$ TeV at LHC. Due to the interaction with the medium heavy quarks and antiquarks are deflected from their original direction and the initial correlation of the pair is broadened. We investigate this effect for different transverse momentum classes. Low-momentum heavy-quark pairs lose their leading order back-to-back initial correlation, while a significant residual correlation survives at large momenta. Due to the larger acquired average deflection from their original directions the azimuthal correlations of heavy-quark pairs are broadened more efficiently in a purely collisional energy loss mechanism compared to including radiative corrections. In an absorptive plasma, damping of radiation mechanisms can influence the bremsstrahlung formation in case of large radiation formation lengths. We study qualitatively the influence of this effect on the gluon bremsstrahlung spectrum off heavy quarks in the quark-gluon plasma. Independent of the heavy-quark mass, the spectrum is found to be strongly suppressed in an intermediate gluon energy region which grows with increasing gluon damping rate and increasing energy of the heavy quark. Thus, just as polarization effects in the plasma render the bremsstrahlung spectra independent of the quark mass in the soft gluon regime, damping effects tend to have a similar impact for larger gluon energies., Comment: contribution to the International Meeting "Excited QCD", Peniche, Portugal, 06 - 12 May 2012

We present a model for radiative energy loss of heavy quarks in quark gluon plasma which incorporates coherence effects. In this contribution, we present some predictions for the production of D and B mesons in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies and confront them with experimental results obtained so far by the STAR, PHENIX, ALICE and CMS collaborations. The radiative energy loss of a relativistic charge in a dense, absorptive medium can be affected significantly by damping phenomena. The effect is more pronounced for large energies of the charge and/or large damping of the radiation. This can be understood in terms of a competition between the formation time of bremsstrahlung and a damping time scale. We discuss this competition in detail for the absorptive QED and QCD medium, focusing on the case in which the mass of the charge is large compared to the in-medium mass of the radiation quanta. We identify the regions in energy and parameter space, in which either coherence or damping effects are of major importance for the radiative energy loss spectrum. The influence of the damping of radiation on the radiative energy loss spectrum of a relativistic charge in an infinite, absorptive plasma is studied. We find increasing reduction of the spectrum with increasing damping. Our studies, which represent an Abelian approximation for the colour charge dynamics in the quark-gluon plasma, may influence the analysis of jet quenching phenomena observed in high-energy nuclear collisions. Here, we focus on a formal discussion of the limiting behaviour with increasing radiation frequency. The energy loss of a relativistic charge undergoing multiple scatterings while traversing an infinite, polarizable and absorptive plasma is investigated. Polarization and damping mechanisms in the medium are phenomenologically modelled by a complex index of refraction. Apart from the known Ter-Mikaelian effect related to the dielectric polarization of matter, we find an additional, substantial reduction of the energy loss due to damping of radiation. The observed effect is more prominent for larger damping and/or larger energy of the charge. A conceivable analog of this phenomenon in QCD could influence the study of jet quenching phenomena in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC., Comment: Sep 2012. 4pp. 3 figures. We study the impact of different Quark-Gluon Plasma expansion scenarios in heavy-ion collisions on spectra and elliptic flow of heavy quarks. For identical heavy-quark transport coefficients relativistic Langevin simulations with different expansion scenarios can lead to appreciable variations in the calculated suppression and elliptic flow of the heavy-quark spectra, by up to a factor of two. A cross comparison with two sets of transport coefficients supports these findings, illustrating the importance of realistic expansion models for quantitative evaluations of heavy-quark observables in heavy-ion collisions. It also turns out that differences in freeze-out prescriptions and Langevin realizations play a significant role in these variations. Light-quark observables are essential in reducing the uncertainties associated with the bulk-matter evolution, even though uncertainties due to the freeze-out prescription persist., Comment: submitted to Physical Review C
