3. Researching Children and Fashion: An Embodied Ethnography

Abstract

Child-centred research methods present a range of opportunities for the researcher to gather rich and detailed data on many aspects of the lives of children. This article examines the experience of using such methods in the context of a study of children as consumers of clothing and fashion. Its principal concern is with the application of an embodied reflexivity to the experience of fieldwork with an 8-year-old girl in intimate settings. The article argues that the current climate of concern about child abuse and paedophilia may be at odds with research approaches that necessitate an intimacy between child and researcher. Interviews with doctoral students and supervisors in physics, mathematics, and engineering attending nine English universities investigated student expectations of doctoral supervision, extent to which expectations were met, and the ways in which supervision changes as the doctoral process progresses. 8. Reshaping Education in the 1990s: Perspectives on Secondary Schooling.

Abstract

The 1988 Education Reform Act precipitated major educational change in the United Kingdom. This book is a compilation of papers originally presented at the 1994 Centre for Educational Development Appraisal and Research (CEDAR) conference at the University of Warwick (England). The papers focus on changes that have occurred and are occurring in the secondary sector, with a focus on three key areas of post-ERA education provision and management. Following the introduction by Christopher Pole and Rita Chawla-Duggan, three chapters in part 1 address issues related to schooling and the creation of an education market. They are: (1) "Dynamics of Competition--The Effects of Local Competitive Arenas on Schools" (Philip A. Woods, Carl Bagley, and Ron Glatter); (2) "Education and Business: Converging Models" (Ian Jamieson); and (3) "Unsaleable Goods and the Education Market" (Eric Blyth and Judith Milner). In part 2, the following four chapters examine different aspects of changes that have occurred in the governance of schools: (4) "The School, the Parent, the Banker and the Local Politician: What Can We Learn from the English Experience of Involving Lay People in the Site Based Management of Schools?" (Rosemary Deem); (5) "School Governing Bodies in Northern Ireland: Responses to Local Management of Schools" (Penny McKeown, Caitlin Donnelly, and Bob Osborne); (6) "Devolved Management: Variations of Response in Scottish School Boards" (Margaret Arnott, Charles Raab, and Pamela Munn); and (7) "The Grant Maintained Schools Policy: The English Experience of Educational Self-Governance" (Sally Power, David Halpin, and John Fitz). Chapters in part 3 focus on experience of local school management. They are: (8) "The New Headteacher: Budgetary Devolution and the Work Culture of Secondary Headship" (Julia Evetts); (9) "A Question of Costs: Budget Management in Secondary Schools" (Lynda Huckman and John Fletcher); (10) "Educational Change in the United Kingdom: A North-South Divide" (Sally Brown); and (11) "When 'Breadth and Balance' Means 'Balancing the Books': Curriculum Planning in Schools Post-ERA" (Dawn Penney and John Evans). Abstract

The thesis describes a study of the transfer from school to non-school of pupils from five schools in different areas of England. The study has focused on fifth year pupils in schools located in Leicester, Stevenage, Windsor, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Middlesbrough. Through a combination of both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods it has concentrated on many aspects of school leaving processes and careers education programmes. Within the context of the different local labour markets the study has given particular attention to the kinds of careers education provided by the schools and by the local authority careers services. The study is comparative in its approach, examining the influence of the local labour market on the organisation and content of careers education, the way in which it was received by the school leavers and its influence upon their aspirations and expectations in terms of employment and further education. The study has shown that in areas of high unemployment such as Middlesbrough and Newcastle, careers education may form part of the wider social education of the pupil. Furthermore, due to the lack of employment opportunities for young people in such areas, it may lose much of the instrumentalism which was apparent in the more prosperous areas of Stevenage, Leicester and in particular, Windsor. Differences between the schools in terms of fifth year perceptions of YTS, reasons for entering further education, the role of qualifications and the importance of occupational choice are also highlighted. The thesis concludes by giving consideration to the likely role of careers education in the context of the National Curriculum and to changing labour market demands for school leavers, in the light of demographic fluctuations.
