IntroductionDietary fiber is a key component of a healthy diet, associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, chronic inflammation, or depression. The aim of the study was to perform an in-depth analysis of dietary fiber intake in the Polish population, taking account of the consumption of groups of products that are fiber sources and identify any age-related differences in the dietary fiber intake of the subjects.MethodsWe analyzed data obtained from two representative cross-sectional studies on the diet and nutritional status of adult Polish residents including the total of 4,000 individuals aged 19 years and more. Two 24-h recalls were used per individual to assess the diet using the computer-assisted personal interview (CAPI) technique. Total fiber content and fiber contained in cereal products, vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts and seeds were calculated. Fiber intake was compared to the recommendations: 25 g/d for adults up to 65 years of age and 20 g/d for those aged 66 years and older. All statistical analyses, including the Pearson’s chi-squared test, the Student’s t-test, and the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), were conducted using STATISTICA™ version 13.3, with the results being adjusted for demographic distribution biases to enhance the representativeness.ResultsThe average daily fiber intake was 17.83 ± 0.14 g/day (78% of the recommended intake), with 20.5% of respondents meeting the requirement. More men than women (27.05% vs. 14.3%;) met the requirement and men were characterized by a higher average intake (19.34 ± 0.20 g/day) than women (16.43 ± 0.19 g/day). The main fiber sources were cereals (44.1%), vegetables (23.6%), and fruits (16.0%). As regards men, the sources included refined bread (25.8%), vegetables (23.1%), and fruits (10.2%) and for women, they were vegetables (24.0%), fruits (17.2%), and refined bread (16.3%). Although refined bread is not recommended as a primary fiber source due to its lower fiber content compared to whole grain bread, its high consumption significantly contributed to the total fiber intake.ConclusionThe prevalence of widespread dietary fiber deficiency calls for the intensification of educational efforts that address the health advantages and sources of dietary fiber, as well as methods for its inclusion in daily meals.

Celiac disease (CD) is a chronic immune-mediated disorder triggered by the ingestion of gluten in genetically predisposed individuals, affecting about 1% of the general population in the developed world. In 2012, the European Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) recommendations for CD diagnoses in children and adolescents were introduced, allowing the "no-biopsy" approach if certain criteria were met. This approach was also confirmed in the revised guidelines published in 2020. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess—over a one-year period—the clinical presentations and current status of the management of children and adolescents diagnosed with CD in Poland. Medical records of children and adolescents, newly diagnosed with CD in 2022/2023 in three medical centers in Poland, were involved. Gastroenterologists completed the specific anonymous web-based forms developed in the CD SKILLS project, including data routinely assessed at individual visits about the diagnostic approach and clinical presentation of the disease. Our study assessed 100 patients (56% girls) with an age range 1.6–18.0 years. We found that 98% of patients were serologically tested prior to a CD diagnosis and 58% of patients were diagnosed using the "no-biopsy" approach. In the analyzed group, 40% belonged to a known risk group, only 22% had annual screening before the CD diagnosis (the longest for 9 years), and 19% showed no symptoms at the time of the CD diagnosis. Our research confirmed the applicability of the "no-biopsy" approach for the diagnosis of CD in children and adolescents in Poland, and also showed changes in the clinical picture of CD. Moreover, we highlight the need to introduce broad CD serological screening in risk groups of the Polish population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Evaluation of nasal resonance is an important part of everyday otolaryngological, phoniatric, and speech therapy practice. It allows the detection and monitoring of anatomical and functional abnormalities in the nasal and oropharyngeal cavities. Nasal resonance can be objectively measured by assessing acoustic energy emitted by each of the subject's nose and mouth. The ratio is called nasalance. The aim of this study was to develop normative values of nasal resonance on a digital device while adults were reading aloud Polish-language material. Material and methods: The study included 51 patients. Patients were tested with three language tests developed by Gąsiorek in 1996. Nasal resonance was measured using a Nasometer II (Model 6450) from Pentax Medical. Results: The mean nasalance in the vowel test was 18.8% (SD = 7.8%). The mean nasalance during the test based on sentences was 14.3% (SD = 4.0%), and for reading continuous text it was 11.7% (SD = 3.7%). Statistical analysis showed no significant difference between men and women on each test. The limiting normative value for nasalance was determined to be 20% in the sentence test (test III of Gąsiorek 1996). Conclusions: 1. Preliminary normative values of nasal resonance for Polish adults have been established based on current methodology. 2. Miscarriage is defined as the loss of pregnancy before 20–24 weeks of gestation, and it is the most common complication of early pregnancy. The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence and risk factors of spontaneous abortion in the population of Polish females to provide a reference for clinical work. Methods: A cross-sectional self-administered on-line survey was distributed between 4th and 5th of October 2019 in the social media across Poland. A total of 100,026 recipients responded to the questionnaire and 93,636 valid respondents were included in the analyses. Results: Among respondents who had ever been pregnant, 31.2% reported at least one spontaneous abortion. The prevalence of miscarriage varied based on age, parity, place of residence and the education level. The first symptom of miscarriage was a vaginal bleeding (56.2%) and abdominal cramps (25.8%), while 43% of respondents had no symptoms and found out during doctor's visit. No medical assistance was required after complete spontaneous abortion in 39.2% of cases. Conclusions: Miscarriage is a common complication of pregnancy, but it is not yet fully understood. The goal of future medicine is to minimize the medicalization of spontaneous abortion and excessive medical intervention by raising awareness about natural miscarriage route. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Proper nutrition may help in preventing deaths or at least alleviating the symptoms of many chronic diseases. While the COVID-19 disease was still taking its toll, the world had to adjust to new life conditions, which could change nutritional habits. In this observational, cross-sectional study, we aimed to identify the potential correlations between sociodemographic factors and diet and the presence of common chronic diseases among Polish inhabitants. Furthermore, we tried to determine whether the COVID-19 pandemic led to changes in nutritional habits. Therefore, based on the online study (the National Test for Poles' Health (NTPH), we collected data from 376,102 and 200,000 respondents in two different time frames (before the COVID-19 pandemic: 2019–2020 and during the COVID-19 pandemic: 2021–2022, respectively). Despite the rapid global rise of the COVID-19 pandemic, among our study group, hypertension was still the most commonly occurring disease in both time frames (32.33% in 2019–2020 and 34.95% in 2021–2022, p < 0.001). Furthermore, more chronic diseases were reported during the COVID-19 pandemic than in 2019–2020. Regarding sociodemographic factors, male respondents were more likely to develop hypertension and diabetes (OR = 1.35 CI 95% (1.28–1.43), p < 0.001; and OR = 1.20 CI 95% (1.11–1.30), p < 0.001). Vegetarian diet decreases the likelihood of hypertension, neurological disease, and diabetes (OR = 0.69, CI 95% (0.60–0.81), p < 0.001; OR = 0.72, CI 95% (0.59–0.88), p = 0.001; and OR = 0.73, CI 95% (0.55–0.96), p = 0.026). In line with this, consuming meat meals increases the risk of hypertension (OR = 1.09, CI 95% (1.02–1.17), p = 0.009). Interestingly, a reduced-sodium diet has an association with decreased morbidity of COVID-19 disease (OR = 0.72, CI 95% (0.63–0.82), p < 0.001). This result brings new light to more research to be done to allow efficient prevention of this disease. In conclusion, our study shows the beneficial role of a balanced diet in reducing the incidence rate of common chronic diseases. Our findings may be educational for those who would like to change their nutritional habits and/or for public health professionals to suggest the implementation of proper diets to their patients. IntroductionBlood transfusion is an intervention widely used in therapeutics (e.g., in the perioperative period), thus, knowledge about factors associated with blood donation is important. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of sociodemographic factors, personal values and life satisfaction on blood donation in Poland.MethodsSecondary analysis of data. A multiple logistic regression was carried out to assess the relationship between sociodemographic factors, life satisfaction (Satisfaction with Life Scale), personal values (Personal Values List) and blood donation.ResultsOf the 770 respondents aged 18–65 years, 262 respondents (34%) donated blood at least once in their lives. Respondents who believed that blood donation is safe (OR = 1.71; Cl95%: 1.20 to 2.43), were male (OR = 1.47; Cl95%: 1.26 to 1.72), married (OR = 1.31; Cl95%: 1.11 to 1.54) and those with high school education (OR = 0.81; Cl95%: 0.66 to 0.99) were more often blood donors.ConclusionPerceived blood donation safety and sociodemographic factors such as gender, marital status, and education level may influence blood donation. Health education is necessary to increase knowledge and shape positive attitudes toward blood donation among the society.

Recently, the experience of the COVID-19 global pandemic has significantly affected the mental condition of entire societies by increasing anxiety and stress resulting from its sudden and completely unexpected nature. In Poland, apart from the pandemic, there is an ongoing threat of an armed conflict just across the border, which can constitute direct and indirect threats to physical and mental health. Each of these situations is unusual and difficult. It is also in sharp contrast to the developmental needs of children and adolescents. It especially violates the principal need of this developmental period, which is to grow up in a predictable as well as physically and emotionally safe environment. The purpose of the conducted research was to assess the psychological condition of Polish adolescents, whose social situation is difficult, in order to take appropriate preventive measures based on this assessment. The study was conducted using the “Who are You?” Scale of Transparency Anxiety and the Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scale (RCADS), as well as a researcher-made survey containing questions about well-being in relation to the pandemic, distance learning and the ongoing war in a neighbouring country. Approval was obtained from the Bioethics Committee to conduct the projected research. The study included 945 adolescents aged 11 to 15 (M = 13.10; SD = 1.11) making a representative sample of adolescents from 14 regions in Poland. The results of the research and analyses show that the adolescents under study have a medium level of intensity of neuroticism, with the highest levels occurring in adolescents aged 14. Moreover, the adolescents manifest relatively lower symptoms of anxiety and depression as well as concern about the pandemic and the war in Ukraine than expected.

The APOBEC3B gene belongs to a cluster of DNA-editing enzymes on chromosome 22 and encodes an activation-induced cytidine deaminase. A large deletion of APOBEC3B was associated with increased breast cancer risk, but the evidence is inconclusive. To investigate whether or not APOBEC3B is a breast cancer susceptibility gene, we sequenced this gene in 617 Polish patients with hereditary breast cancer. We detected a single recurrent truncating mutation (c.783delG, p.Val262Phefs) in four of the 617 (0.65%) hereditary cases by sequencing. We then genotyped an additional 12,484 women with unselected breast cancer and 3740 cancer-free women for the c.783delG mutation. The APOBEC3B c.783delG allele was detected in 60 (0.48%) unselected cases and 19 (0.51%) controls (OR = 0.95, 95% CI 0.56–1.59, p = 0.94). The allele was present in 8 of 1968 (0.41%) familial breast cancer patients from unselected cases (OR = 0.80, 95% CI 0.35–1.83, p = 0.74). Clinical characteristics of breast tumors in carriers of the APOBEC3B mutation and non-carriers were similar. No cancer type was more frequent in the relatives of mutation carriers than in those of non-carriers. We conclude the APOBEC3B deleterious mutation p.Val262Phefs does not confer breast cancer risk. Aim of the study: To assess the prevalence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) risk factors in the Polish population of AMD patients and healthy individuals over 40 years of age. Material and methods: The Simplified Thea AMD Risk-Assessment Scale (STARS) was performed on people aged over 40 years old including AMD patients in Poland. The questionnaire contained questions about demographics and AMD risk factors. results: Data were obtained from 233 adults (65% were female). 54% of participants were in the age range of 40-64, 23% in the range 65-74 and 23% in the 75+ group. Age-related macular degeneration was reported in 90 cases, more often in adults over 65 years old (p < 0.001). Patients with AMD were more frequently diagnosed with hypertension (p = 0.006), hypercholesterolemia (p = 0.002) and arteriosclerosis (p = 0.03) compared to adults without AMD. Phacoemulsification procedures had been performed more often in the AMD group compared to the healthy one (p < 0.001). Smoking was more common in people with AMD (p = 0.004). STARS median score in the overall group was 9.5 points (0-30). The score was significantly higher in the AMD group compared with the no AMD group (p < 0.001). The distribution between low, moderate and high risk groups was respectively 32%, 60% and 13% in the AMD group, and 75%, 24% and 1% in the healthy group; the difference was statistically significant (p < 0.001). conclusions: Most AMD risk factors included in the questionnaire occurred more often in AMD patients. Therefore, it could be useful in determining the high risk of AMD in the Polish population. Moreover, there is a need for wider education about healthy lifestyle which influences AMD risk. Evidence has grown recently on the correlation between lifestyle and physical activity, and their impact on the functioning of the entire organism. In addition, a decrease in physical efficiency may be an indicator of the early diagnosis of systemic diseases. The aim of this study was to determine whether there is a relationship between exercise tolerance and possible erectile dysfunction or mental disorders. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 254 men in 4 cardiac rehabilitation centers in Poland using the standardized International Index of Erectile Function 5 (IIEF-5) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) questionnaires. Erectile dysfunction was directly proportional to the metabolic equivalent of the task (MET) variable. An increase in exercise tolerance by 1 point was associated with an increase in the IIEF-5 score by 1.62 points, indicating a reduction in the severity of erectile dysfunction. The 1-point increase in MET was associated with a 1.8-point decrease in BDI, indicating that an increase in exercise tolerance is associated with a decrease in the severity of depressive disorders. Increasing the tolerance of physical effort has a beneficial effect not only on the general well-being, but also on the sexual and mental health of men. An increase in exercise tolerance is associated with a reduction in the incidence of erectile dysfunction. On the other hand, in patients with depressive disorders, the improvement of exercise tolerance reduces the intensity of depression symptoms. Exercise tolerance can be an early and simple marker at the onset of erectile dysfunction or mood disorders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Several breast cancer susceptibility genes have been discovered, but more are likely to exist. To identify additional breast cancer susceptibility genes, we used the founder population of Poland and performed whole-exome sequencing on 510 women with familial breast cancer and 308 control subjects. We identified a rare mutation in ATRIP (GenBank: NM_130384.3: c.1152_1155del [p.Gly385Ter]) in two women with breast cancer. At the validation phase, we found this variant in 42/16,085 unselected Polish breast cancer-affected individuals and in 11/9,285 control subjects (OR = 2.14, 95% CI = 1.13–4.28, p = 0.02). By analyzing the sequence data of the UK Biobank study participants (450,000 individuals), we identified ATRIP loss-of-function variants among 13/15,643 breast cancer-affected individuals versus 40/157,943 control subjects (OR = 3.28, 95% CI = 1.76–6.14, p < 0.001). Immunohistochemistry and functional studies showed the ATRIP c.1152_1155del variant allele is weakly expressed compared to the wild-type allele, and truncated ATRIP fails to perform its normal function to prevent replicative stress. We showed that tumors of women with breast cancer who have a germline ATRIP mutation have loss of heterozygosity at the site of ATRIP mutation and genomic homologous recombination deficiency. ATRIP is a critical partner of ATR that binds to RPA coating single-stranded DNA at sites of stalled DNA replication forks. Proper activation of ATR-ATRIP elicits a DNA damage checkpoint crucial in regulating cellular responses to DNA replication stress. Based on our observations, we conclude ATRIP is a breast cancer susceptibility gene candidate linking DNA replication stress to breast cancer. We report an association between ATRIP mutations and increased risk of breast cancer. Identifying individuals with germline ATRIP mutations could lead to diagnosing cancer in earlier stages through more intensive cancer screening and could encourage use of more efficient targeted therapies at the time of cancer diagnosis. Objectives: Skin color is a classic example of a visible human trait that varies widely among and between human populations; it has evolved finely balancing photoprotection and 25(OH)D (vitamin D) synthesis as opposing selection forces. While the health effects of vitamin D deficiency in Northern European populations are profound, we are yet to accurately characterize the evolutionary relationship between vitamin D requirements and skin color diversity. Materials and Methods: This study explored this relation among a cohort of 170 children from central Poland considering season of measurement and socioeconomic status (SES). Alongside completed questionnaires, saliva was collected and the level of 25(OH)D was assessed using an enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay kit; furthermore, a Dermaspectrometer was used to measure skin color by recording the Melanin Index (MI). Results: First, 25(OH)D concentration or skin color variation are not significantly different between boys and girls; second, 25(OH)D concentration is lower in late autumn than in spring, while skin color (MI) is darker in autumn; crucially, we found significant association between MI and 25(OH)D concentration: higher MI is significantly associated with lower 25(OH)D levels only in boys measured in autumn, and not in spring. Conclusions: These results shed light on the factors affecting 25(OH)D concentration and MI variation in a cohort of Polish children: they offer an evolutionary perspective on the potential role of vitamin D as a driver of skin color diversity while informing a key public health debate. Aim of the Study: Genetic panel testing in paediatric and mixed adult and children populations has demonstrated clinical utility and provided a diagnostic yield of 18-40%. The data on adult epilepsies is limited. We aimed to investigate the diagnostic yield and analyse genetic diagnoses in whole exome sequenced adult patients with epilepsies in Poland., Material and Methods: We recruited 151 patients from 42 clinical centres across Poland. The patients had a diagnosis of epilepsy/ seizures, were 18 or older at the time of the genetic testing, and did not have a genetic diagnosis. All patients were tested with whole exome sequencing after an initial testing with a panel of 47 epilepsy-related genes., Results: We reached a diagnostic yield when considering pathogenic/probably pathogenic variants according to ClinVar of 8.6% (n = 13) and 17% (n = 26) when applying the American College of Medical Genetics (ACMG) criteria. Most patients had a pathogenic/probably pathogenic variant in epilepsy-related genes (54%), followed by potential epilepsy-related genes (19%), and neurodevelopment-associated epilepsy genes (15%)., Conclusions: Our study shows that whole exome sequencing-based testing reaches a slightly higher diagnostic yield that the traditional 300 gene panel. Genes related to childhood onset neurodevelopmental disorders and epilepsy should be considered as well. Clinical implications/future directions. Patients may have had a diagnosis related to a childhood syndrome, but due to limited diagnostic possibilities, it was not possible to diagnose them in childhood. We would consider testing adult patients with epilepsy with whole exome or genome sequencing (or if not possible with a panel) in cases of a diagnosis of epilepsy with no hints suggesting secondary epilepsy, and especially with clinical features indicating a genetic epilepsy diagnosis, such as neurodevelopmental delay and early onset of seizures.

Introduction and Objective: The disruption of daily activities caused by the COVID-19 pandemic had health consequences, especially during peak lockdown periods. The aim of the study is to assess the impact of the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic on the process of weight change among Polish adults., Material and Methods: Two representative studies involving Polish adults aged 18-65 years were conducted, the first in June 2020 (N = 2527, from the perspective of the last 2-3 months), and the second a year later, in June 2021 (N = 2087, covering the last 12 months). Both surveys included two groups of respondents, and conducted using the CAWI method - computer-assisted web interview., Results: In the first period of the COVID-19 pandemic, there were more individuals with obesity than a year later (18.7% vs 19.9%), and more respondents reported weight change in 2020 than in 2021 (53% vs 49.6%). In both surveys, women were more likely to report weight gain than men (p<0.001). Statistically significant factors for weight change in 2020 and 2021 were gender, age, and in 2021, education and relationship status. Multinomial logistic regression showed that BMI, age of 18-29 and 30-49, being male, and education below high school, was significant for weight gain. While for weight loss, BMI, age 18-29 and 30-49, being male, and year of study, were statistically significant., Conclusions: The findings confirmed that body weight changed throughout the pandemic, depending on the time of the pandemic and selected socio-demographic factors.

Evidence has grown recently on the correlation between lifestyle and physical activity, and their impact on the functioning of the entire organism. In addition, a decrease in physical efficiency may be an indicator of the early diagnosis of systemic diseases. The aim of this study was to determine whether there is a relationship between exercise tolerance and possible erectile dysfunction or mental disorders. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 254 men in 4 cardiac rehabilitation centers in Poland using the standardized International Index of Erectile Function 5 (IIEF-5) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) questionnaires. Erectile dysfunction was directly proportional to the metabolic equivalent of the task (MET) variable. An increase in exercise tolerance by 1 point was associated with an increase in the IIEF-5 score by 1.62 points, indicating a reduction in the severity of erectile dysfunction. The 1-point increase in MET was associated with a 1.8-point decrease in BDI, indicating that an increase in exercise tolerance is associated with a decrease in the severity of depressive disorders. Increasing the tolerance of physical effort has a beneficial effect not only on the general well-being, but also on the sexual and mental health of men. An increase in exercise tolerance is associated with a reduction in the incidence of erectile dysfunction. On the other hand, in patients with depressive disorders, the improvement of exercise tolerance reduces the intensity of depression symptoms. Exercise tolerance can be an early and simple marker at the onset of erectile dysfunction or mood disorders.

Y chromosome typing has been performed in forensic genetic practice for more than 20 years. The latest recommendations of the DNA Commission of the International Society of Forensic Genetics (ISFG) concerning the application of Y-chromosomal markers in forensic genetics were published in 2006. The aim of this report is to recapitulate, systematise and supplement existing recommendations on the forensic analysis of polymorphism of the Y chromosome with standards already implemented in practice, new capabilities linked to the development of research techniques as well as current solutions used in statistical analysis. The recommendations have been adapted specifically to aspects related to the preparation of expert opinions in the field of forensic genetics in Poland. The Polish Speaking Working Group of the ISFG believes that the presented guidelines should become a standard implemented by all Polish laboratories performing Y chromosome typing for forensic purposes.

Three substitutions in the ATM gene (c.6095G>A, c.7630-2A>C, c.5932G>T) are the most common mutations causing ataxia-telangiectasia among Polish patients. The aim of this study was to determine whether these ATM mutations are associated with increased risk of tobacco-related cancers. Material and methods 783 Polish patients with tobacco-related cancers were included in the study (468 with lung cancer, 153 with a single laryngeal cancer, 86 with multiple primary tumors localized in the larynx and 76 multiple primary tumors localized in the head or neck). The control group consisted of 464 healthy subjects from the Polish population. Three ATM mutations – c.5932G>T, c.6095G>A, c.7630-2A>C – were tested among selected patients. Molecular analyses were performed using high resolution melting analysis and restriction fragment length polymorphism. Results In the present study, we detected only one mutation, c.7630-2A>C, and no carriers of c.5932G>T, c.6095G>A mutations in the ATM gene among Polish patients with tobacco-related cancers. A patient with c.7630-2A>C mutation was diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma, the most common type of lung cancer. One carrier of c.6095G>A mutation was found in the control group. Conclusions The results indicate that the studied ATM variants do not seem to be associated with tobacco-related cancers in Poland.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic can cause emotional distress, which can in turn lead to the development of mental and physical symptoms. Aim: We examined the association of the COVID-19 outbreak and the mental, physical and sexual health of the female Polish population. Methods: Data were collected in an online survey distributed on social media from April 22, 2020 through to May 7, 2020. The data collection began one month after the start of lockdown in Poland. Main Outcome Measure: Women were asked to complete the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) questionnaires. Results: Overall, 1644 women (median age 23 years) took part in the survey. They reported a lower frequency of sexual activity (P < .001) and a lower libido level (P < .001) during the pandemic then before it. 57.5% of the study group (n = 944) strongly agreed or agreed that fear of the health condition of loved ones was a source of stress and depressed mood. The average BDI-II total score was 11 (range 0-51; IQR 5-18), which corresponds to minimal depression. The average FSFI total score was 27.01 ± 7.61 (range 2-36). The FSFI and BDI scores were significantly correlated (P < .001). The FSFI score was significantly correlated with the presence of any comorbid chronic disease, the intensity of the fear of infection and fear of health conditions, perceived loneliness, and the being up to date with media news. The BDI score was significantly correlated with age, the intensity of the fear of infection and fear of health conditions, perceived loneliness, being up to date with media news, and the more frequent use of stimulants. Background. It seems that one of the factors affecting the way of nutrition in Poland was the dietary habits of countries that in the late 18th century made partitions, ie. Russia, Prussia and Austria. Therefore, nutrition models in the areas of individual partitions have undergone significant changes. Objective. The aim of the study was to check whether after 85 years after regaining independence there were still differences in the way of feeding indigenous inhabitants of areas previously under Austrian, Prussian and Russian annexation. Material and methods. The data collected during the WOBASZ survey carried out in the years 2003-2005 were used for the analysis. Results. The greatest differences in the way of feeding were found in the area that was previously under the rule of Prussia. The nutrition model was still largely reminiscent of typical German cuisine. There was a large consumption of sausages and spreads, and small vegetables and fruit. Nutrition models in other areas were less characteristic. Conclusions. The way of feeding indigenous people living in areas that were once partitions of Poland is still diverse and similar to the cuisine of the occupying country.

Introduction. Genetic forms of Parkinson's disease (PD) often cluster in different ethnic groups and may present with recognisable unique clinical manifestations. Our aim was to summarise the current state of knowledge regarding the genetic causes of PD and describe the first Polish patient with SNCA duplication. PD and describe the first Polish patient with SNCA duplication. Methodology. We searched the electronic database, PubMed, for studies between January 1995 and June 2020 that evaluated genetics in Polish patients with PD, using the search terms 'Parkinson's disease, 'Polish', 'genetics', 'mutations', and 'variants'. Results. In total, 73 publications were included in the review; 11 genes responsible for monogenic forms and 19 risk factor genes have been analysed in the Polish population. Pathogenic variants were reported in four monogenic genes (LRRK2, PRKN, PINK1, and SNCA). Eight genes were associated with PD risk in the Polish population (GBA, TFAM, NFE2L2, MMP12, HLA-DRA, COMT, MAOB, and DBH). Multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification and Sanger sequencing in PRKN, PINK1, DJ1, LRRK2, and SNCA revealed SNCA duplication in a 43-year-old Polish patient with PD examined by movement disorder specialists. Conclusion. Only a limited number of positive results have been reported in genes previously associated with PD in the Polish population. The study presents a full analysis of the Y-chromosome variability of the modern male Polish population. It is the first study of the Polish population to be conducted with such a large set of data (2,705 individuals), which includes genetic information from inhabitants of all voivodeships, i.e., the first administrative level, in the country and the vast majority of its counties, i.e., the second level. In addition, the available data were divided into clusters corresponding to more natural geographic regions. Genetic analysis included the estimation of FST distances, the visualization with the use of multidimensional scaling plots and analysis of molecular variance. Y-chromosome binary haplogroups were classified and visualized with the use of interpolation maps. Results showed that the level of differentiation within Polish population is quite low, but some differences were indicated. It was confirmed that the Polish population is characterized by a high degree of homogeneity, with only slight genetic differences being observed at the regional level. The use of regional clustering as an alternative to counties and voivodeships provided a more detailed view of the genetic structure of the population. Those regional differences identified in the present study highlighted the need for additional division of the population by cultural and ethnic criteria in such studies rather than just by geographical or administrative regionalization.

Background: The aim of the study was to determine the location of the branchingof the renal arteries from the aorta in respect to superior mesenteric artery.Materials and Methods: Three hundred twenty four vasculorenal samples were collected from corpses (180 male and 144 female), and subject to X-ray contrasting and preparation. The distance between the branching of selected arteries from the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) was measured. Results were subject to statistical analysis.Results: Results were presented in group A (191/324; 58.9%) considering subjects with bilateral, single renal arteries, as well as group B (133/324; 41.1%) considering patients with multiple renal arteries. The average distance between SMA and the renal artery in group A male patients was 0.6 ± 0.57 cm, while in group B 1.3 ± 2.03 cm (p = 0.0001). In the case of female A patients, results amounted to 0.66 ± 0.58 cm and 1.12 ± 1.7 cm, respectively (p = 0.006). The above mentioned left-sided distance in male group A was 0.89 ± 56 cm, while the right-sided distance 0.73 ± 0.94 cm (p = 0.382). In female A patients 0.80 ± 0.50 cm and 0.71 ± 0.89 cm, respectively (p = 0.615). In left-sided group B male patients the distance amounted to 0.87 ± 0.70 cm, and the right-sided distance 0.71 ± 0.60 cm (p = 0.291). Considering female patients results were as follows: 0.82 ± 0.51 cm (left) and 71 ± 1.21 cm (right), respectively (p = 0.706).Conclusions: Knowledge of the described topography of renal artery branching from the aorta should be considered in the preoperative planning of vascular kidney system radiology examinations, as well as retroperitoneal surgical and urological procedures, especially endoscopic kidney transplantations. Plant sterols are compounds with multiple biological functions, mainly cholesterol-reducing. There are no comprehensive databases on plant sterols, which makes it difficult to estimate their intake in the Polish population. This work attempted to use international food databases, additionally supplemented by scientific data from the literature, to create a database of plant sterols, which would cover various kinds of foods and dishes consumed in Poland. The aim was to assess the size and sources of dietary plant sterols in the adult population of Poland. The literature search was conducted using PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar to identify possible sources of published food composition data for plant sterols. The study group consisted of 5690 participants of the WOBASZ II survey. We identified 361 dietary sources of plant sterols based on the consumption of foods and dishes reported by participants. Cereals and fats provided 61% of the total plant sterols, and together with vegetables and fruits, this totaled 80%. The median intake of plant sterols in the Polish population was 255.96 mg/day, and for men and women 291.76 and 230.61 mg/day, respectively. Canola oil provided the most plant sterols at 16.92%, followed by white bread at 16.65% and soft margarine at 8.33%. The study found that plant sterol intake in Poland is comparable to other populations, and women’s diets are more dense in plant sterols. Due to the lack of literature sources on plant sterol content in some foods, future studies should expand and complete the databases on plant sterol content in foods.

The paper presents the designs and methods of a cross-sectional study of two groups of randomly selected Polish inhabitants aged 19–64, and 65 and over, carried out as part of the National Health Program. The aim of the study was to illustrate the current health situation of the respondents in terms of nutrition and physical activity level. The quantitative and qualitative methods were used. The Computer Assisted Personal Interview technique was used. The dietary research was carried out through repeated interviews about the frequency of food consumption, and about what food had been consumed in the previous 24 h. In addition to the questionnaire studies, anthropometric data, blood pressure and the level of physical activity were measured. During the COVID-19 pandemic, some methods were modified according to hygiene rules. The Computer Assisted Telephone Interview technique was used to collect the data, and the anthropometric data were obtained via measurements made by the respondents themselves based on detailed instructions. The results will be used to present representative data for the Polish population, describing a wide range of eating behaviours and other lifestyle elements, food and nutrition knowledge, dietary supplement use, the occurrence of diet-related diseases, nutritional status and, in the seniors group, the risk of sarcopenia.

Background. Oxidative stress plays a key role in the development of most non-communicable diseases, including arterial hypertension (AH). Diet is the major source of exogenous antioxidants, which support the body in the elimination of excessive free radicals. Objectives. To assess dietary total antioxidant potential (DTAP) and dietary polyphenol intake (DPI), and to determine the relationship between DTAP, DPI and hypertension in the Polish adult population; to indicate dietary sources of DTAP and DPI in participants with and without AH. Material and methods. Within the frame of the National Multicenter Health Survey (WOBASZ II), a random sample of the whole Polish population aged 20 years and above was screened during the years 2013-2014. Dietary habits and blood pressure were assessed in 2,554 men and 3,136 women. Dietary total antioxidant potential and DPI were calculated according to the amount of food consumed by the participants combined with the antioxidant potential and polyphenol contents in foods. Results. The mean DTAP was 12.36 mmol/day in men and 12.27 mmol/day in women, and DPI was 2069 mg/day and 1989 mg/day, respectively. The DTAP and DPI were associated with reduced odds of AH in the Polish population. After adjusting for confounding variables, higher DTAP (by 1 mmol/day) had reduced odds of AH by 1.3% in men and by 1.8% in women and higher DPI (by 100 mg/day) by 1.1% and by 2.2%, respectively. Regardless of sex and AH, the main sources of DTAP and DPI were beverages, especially coffee and tea (over 50%), fruit (12-24%) and vegetables (12-18%). Conclusions. The intake of food with high antioxidant potential and rich in polyphenols was associated, slightly but independently of other factors, with a lower chance of hypertension in the adult Polish population. The impact of rare and damaging variants in genes associated with platelet function in large-vessel ischemic stroke (LVIS) remains unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the contribution of some of these variants to the genetic susceptibility to LVIS in Polish patients using a deep re-sequencing of 54 selected genes, coding for proteins associated with altered platelet function. Targeted pooled re-sequencing (Illumina HiSeq 2500) was performed on genomic DNA of 500 cases (patients with history of clinically proven diagnosis of LVIS) and 500 age-, smoking status-, and sex-matched controls (no history of any type of stroke), and from the same population as patients with LVIS. After quality control and prioritization based on allele frequency and damaging probability, individual genotyping of all deleterious rare variants was performed in patients from the original cohort, and stratified to concomitant cardiac conditions differing between the study and stroke groups. We demonstrated a statistically significant increase in the number of rare and potentially damaging variants in some of the investigated genes in the LVIS pool (an increase in the genomic variants burden). Furthermore, we identified an association between LVIS and 6 rare functional and damaging variants in the Kv7.1 potassium channel gene (KCNQ1). The predicted functional properties (partial loss-of function) for the three most damaging variants in KCNQ1 coding locus were further confirmed in vitro by analyzing the membrane potential changes in cell lines co-transfected heterogeneously with human muscarinic type 1 receptor and wild-type or mutated KCNQ1 cDNA constructs using fluorescence imaging plate reader. The study demonstrated an increased rare variants burden for 54 genes associated with platelet function, and identified a putative role for rare damaging variants in the KCNQ1 gene on LVIS susceptibility in the Polish population. Introduction: The Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a non-inflammatory, heritable connective tissue disorder divided into 13 types according to the 2017 International Classification of the Ehlers-Danlos syndromes. One of the subtypes of EDS, classical (cEDS), is characterized by joint hypermobility, skin hyperextensibility and atrophic scars, which are major criteria of cEDS. Aim: In this study, the first in Central Eastern Europe, 44 patients were investigated. All of them were tested for COL5A1 mutations with direct DNA sequencing. Material and methods: The study group included 44 patients of Polish origin, all of whom fulfilled criteria for the classical type of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. Direct sequencing of the COL5A1, COL5A2 and COL1A1 c.934C>T genes was performed for all of them. Evaluation of potential pathogenicity of detected missense mutation was conducted using SIFT (Sorting Intolerant from Tolerant), PolyPhen-2, AlignGVGD (Align Grantham Variance/Grantham Difference). The effect of the splice site mutations was predicted by Human Splicing Finder and NetGene2 tools. Results: Among all tested patients, nine mutations of COL5A1 gene were detected (8 missense mutations and 1 splice site). The alterations identified by us are new, hitherto not described in other reports. Evaluation of the mutations by in silico tools indicate their pathogenicity. Conclusions: Our study is the first COL5A1 gene molecular investigation conducted among cEDS patients from Central Eastern Europe. Besides new COL5A1 variant findings, we gained molecular confirmation of clinical diagnosis of cEDS. The objective of the study was to verify whether or not FTO rs9939609, rs9926289 and TMEM18 rs4854344, rs6548238, rs2867125 variants are important risk factors for overweight and/or obesity in Polish children aged 6-16 (n=283). FTO rs 9939609 and rs9926289 exhibited a strong codominant obesity-predisposing effect of genotypes homozygous for minor alleles (OR=5.42, 95% CI: 2.04-14.39, p=0.0006). The important finding of the study is increased risk of overweight (OR=5.03, 95% CI: 1.15-21.93, p=0.0306) in individuals homozygous for the minor alleles rs4854344, rs6548238 and rs2867125 in the recessive inheritance model, while no other significant associations between TMEM18 variants and risk of obesity were found. Given the identified interaction TMEM18 genotype × BMI category (p=0.0077), it seems that the effect of homozygous for the minor alleles may be compared to a “weight guard”, which significantly increases the risk of overweight, but not of obesity, because it promotes weight gain only up to the threshold of obesity. Conclusion: The proposed hypothetical effect (“weight guard”) of homozygous for the minor alleles in the TMEM18 based on a rather small sample is a possible explanation of the effects of minor alleles, which minimize the risk of obesity.

Introduction: Blood transfusion is an intervention widely used in therapeutics (e.g., in the perioperative period), thus, knowledge about factors associated with blood donation is important. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of sociodemographic factors, personal values and life satisfaction on blood donation in Poland., Methods: Secondary analysis of data. A multiple logistic regression was carried out to assess the relationship between sociodemographic factors, life satisfaction (Satisfaction with Life Scale), personal values (Personal Values List) and blood donation., Results: Of the 770 respondents aged 18-65 years, 262 respondents (34%) donated blood at least once in their lives. Respondents who believed that blood donation is safe (OR = 1.71; Cl95%: 1.20 to 2.43), were male (OR = 1.47; Cl95%: 1.26 to 1.72), married (OR = 1.31; Cl95%: 1.11 to 1.54) and those with high school education (OR = 0.81; Cl95%: 0.66 to 0.99) were more often blood donors., Conclusion: Perceived blood donation safety and sociodemographic factors such as gender, marital status, and education level may influence blood donation. Recently, the experience of the COVID-19 global pandemic has significantly affected the mental condition of entire societies by increasing anxiety and stress resulting from its sudden and completely unexpected nature. In Poland, apart from the pandemic, there is an ongoing threat of an armed conflict just across the border, which can constitute direct and indirect threats to physical and mental health. Each of these situations is unusual and difficult. It is also in sharp contrast to the developmental needs of children and adolescents. It especially violates the principal need of this developmental period, which is to grow up in a predictable as well as physically and emotionally safe environment. The purpose of the conducted research was to assess the psychological condition of Polish adolescents, whose social situation is difficult, in order to take appropriate preventive measures based on this assessment. The study was conducted using the "Who are You?" Scale of Transparency Anxiety and the Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scale (RCADS), as well as a researcher-made survey containing questions about well-being in relation to the pandemic, distance learning and the ongoing war in a neighbouring country. Approval was obtained from the Bioethics Committee to conduct the projected research. The study included 945 adolescents aged 11 to 15 (M = 13.10; SD = 1.11) making a representative sample of adolescents from 14 regions in Poland. The results of the research and analyses show that the adolescents under study have a medium level of intensity of neuroticism, with the highest levels occurring in adolescents aged 14.
