Abstract

The atmospheric C/O ratio of exoplanets is widely used to constrain their formation. To guarantee that the C/O ratio provides robust information, we need to accurately quantify the amount of C and O in exoplanetary atmospheres. In the case of O, water and carbon monoxide are generally studied as the two key carriers. However, oxygen is a very reactive element and does not bind with carbon; depending on the temperature, it also binds to refractory elements. Estimating the amount of oxygen bound to refractory elements is therefore critical for unbiased estimates of the C/O ratio. In this work, we investigate the oxygen deficit due to refractory elements and its effects on the atmospheric C/O ratio of giant exoplanets as a function of their metallicity and equilibrium temperature. We model the composition of planetary atmospheres assuming chemical equilibrium and using as input physically justified elemental mixtures arising from detailed planet formation simulations. Our results show how the interplay between the atmospheric temperature and non-solar abundances of oxygen and refractory elements can sequester large fractions of oxygen, introducing significant biases in evaluating the C/O ratio when this effect is not accounted for. We apply our results to the case of Jupiter in the Solar System and show how the currently estimated water abundance points to a true oxygen abundance that is four times the solar one., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication on the journal MNRAS

Abstract

One of the striking features about Venus atmosphere is its temporal variability and dynamics, with a chaotic polar vortex, large-scale atmospheric waves, sheared features, and variable winds that depend on local time and possibly orographic features. The aim of this research is to combine data accumulated over several years and obtain a global mean state of the atmosphere focusing in the global structure of the clouds using the cloud opacity and upper cloud temperatures. We have first produced global maps using the integrated radiance through the infrared atmospheric windows centred around 1.74{\mu}m and 2.25{\mu}m, that show the spatial variations of the cloud opacity in the lower clouds around 44-48 km altitude and also provide an indirect estimation of the possible particle size. We have also produced similar global maps using the brightness temperatures seen in the thermal region at 3.8{\mu}m and 5.0{\mu}m, which provide direct indication of the temperatures at the top of the clouds around 60-70 km altitude. These maps have been generated using the complete dataset of the Visible and InfraRed Thermal Imaging Spectrometer mapping channel (VIRTIS-M) on board Venus Express, with a wide spatial and long temporal coverage in the period from May 2006 until October 2008. Our results provide a global view of the cloud opacity, particle size and upper cloud temperatures at both hemispheres, showing the main different dynamical regions of the planet. The profiles obtained also provide the detailed dependencies with latitude, local time and longitude, diagnostic of the global circulation flow and dynamics at various altitude layers, from about 44 up to 70 km over the surface.

Abstract

PubMed: 31209238, The effectiveness of most cancer targeted therapies is short-lived. Tumors often develop resistance that might be overcome with drug combinations. However, the number of possible combinations is vast, necessitating data-driven approaches to find optimal patient-specific treatments. Here we report AstraZeneca’s large drug combination dataset, consisting of 11,576 experiments from 910 combinations across 85 molecularly characterized cancer cell lines, and results of a DREAM Challenge to evaluate computational strategies for predicting synergistic drug pairs and biomarkers. 160 teams participated to provide a comprehensive methodological development and benchmarking. Winning methods incorporate prior knowledge of drug-target interactions. Synergy is predicted with an accuracy matching biological replicates for >60% of combinations. However, 20% of drug combinations are poorly predicted by all methods. Abstract

The effectiveness of most cancer targeted therapies is short-lived. Tumors often develop resistance that might be overcome with drug combinations. However, the number of possible combinations is vast, necessitating data-driven approaches to find optimal patient-specific treatments. Here we report AstraZeneca’s large drug combination dataset, consisting of 11,576 experiments from 910 combinations across 85 molecularly characterized cancer cell lines, and results of a DREAM Challenge to evaluate computational strategies for predicting synergistic drug pairs and biomarkers. 160 teams participated to provide a comprehensive methodological development and benchmarking. Winning methods incorporate prior knowledge of drug-target interactions. Synergy is predicted with an accuracy matching biological replicates for >60% of combinations. However, 20% of drug combinations are poorly predicted by all methods. Genomic rationale for synergy predictions are identified, including ADAM17 inhibitor antagonism when combined with PIK3CB/D inhibition contrasting to synergy when combined with other PI3K-pathway inhibitors in PIK3CA mutant cells.

Abstract

The SIMBIO-SYS (Spectrometer and Imaging for MPO BepiColombo Integrated Observatory SYStem) is a complex instrument suite part of the scientific payload of the Mercury Planetary Orbiter for the BepiColombo mission, the last of the cornerstone missions of the European Space Agency (ESA) Horizon + science program. The SIMBIO-SYS instrument will provide all the science imaging capability of the BepiColombo MPO spacecraft. It consists of three channels: the STereo imaging Channel (STC), with a broad spectral band in the 400-950 nm range and medium spatial resolution (at best 58 m/px), that will provide Digital Terrain Model of the entire surface of the planet with an accuracy better than 80 m; the High Resolution Imaging Channel (HRIC), with broad spectral bands in the 400-900 nm range and high spatial resolution (at best 6 m/px), that will provide high-resolution images of about 20% of the surface, and the Visible and near-Infrared Hyperspectral Imaging channel (VIHI), with high spectral resolution (6 nm at finest) in the 400-2000 nm range and spatial resolution reaching 120 m/px, it will provide global coverage at 480 m/px with the spectral information, assuming the first orbit around Mercury with periherm at 480 km from the surface. SIMBIO-SYS will provide high-resolution images, the Digital Terrain Model of the entire surface, and the surface composition using a wide spectral range, as for instance detecting sulphides or material derived by sulphur and carbon oxidation, at resolutions and coverage higher than the MESSENGER mission with a full co-alignment of the three channels. All the data that will be acquired will allow to cover a wide range of scientific objectives, from the surface processes and cartography up to the internal structure, contributing to the libration experiment, and the surface-exosphere interaction. Abstract

On December 2018, the Near Earth Commissioning Phase (NECP) has been place forSIMBIO-SYS (Spectrometers and Imagers for MPO BepiColombo Integrated Observatory – SYStem), the suite part of the scientific payload of the BepiColombo ESA-JAXA mission. SIMBIO-SYS is composed of three channels: the high resolution camera (HRIC), the stereo camera (STC) and the Vis/NIR spectrometer (VIHI) . During the NECP the three channels have been operated properly. For the three channels were checked the operativity and the performance. The commanded operations allowed to verify all the instrument functionalities demonstrating that all SIMBIO-SYS channels and subsystems work nominally. During this phase we also validated the Ground Segment Equipment (GSE) and the data analysis tools developed by the team.

Abstract

The IAPS experience in the field of analysis of planetary atmospheres from visual and infrared measurements dates back to the early '90 in the frame of the IFSI participation to the Mars96 program. Since then, the forward models as well as retrieval schemes have been constantly updated and have seen a large usage in the analysis of data from Mars Express, Venus Express and Cassini missions. At the eve of a new series of missions (Juno, ExoMars, JUICE), we review the tools currently available to the Italian community, the latest developments and future perspectives. Notably, recent reanalysis of PFS-MEX and VIRTIS-VEX data \citep{Grassi2014} leaded to a full convergence of complete Bayesian retrieval schemes and approximate forward models, achieving a degree of maturity and flexibility quite close to the state-of-the-art NEMESIS package \citep{Irwin2007}. As a test case, the retrieval code for the JIRAM observations of hot-spots will be discussed, with extensive validation against simulated observations.

Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko undergoes periherm transit at 1.2 AU in August 2015. During this passage the illumination conditions above the south hemisphere of the nucleus rapidly improve becoming optimal for the retrieval of the surface properties by VIRTIS-M onboard Rosetta. A similar mapping of the surface at about 12.5 m/pixel and at solar phases below 40 deg has been already performed during the Philae prelanding phase (August-September 2014, heliocentric distance 3.6 AU) allowing us to build compositional maps of the entire north hemisphere and equatorial regions down to latitudes -50 deg on a limited part of the Hapi, or the comet’s neck, region. One year after this first mapping campaign the illumination geometry becomes favorable to complete the coverage above the South polar region. Since comet’s activity is rapidly increasing and the Rosetta spacecraft cannot orbit on low trajectories like during the prelanding phase, the south hemisphere maps shall be reasonably observed by VIRTIS-M with a spatial resolution of about 25 m/pixel. Global scale data have shown that the nucleus’ double-lobe surface is characterized by morphologically different units uniformly covered by a very dark, low-albedo, dehydrated organic-rich material. Compositional properties across the different regions of the nucleus are mapped by measuring visible and infrared spectral slopes, calculated on the best linear fit to the reflectance spectra between 0.5-0.8 μm and 1-2.5 μm, respectively. As pre-landing data have clearly shown, spectral slopes are highly diagnostic to identify active areas, like in the Hapi area, and exposed water ice deposits where the spectra appear less red. As heliocentric distance decreases and diurnal temperatures increase, the 3-5 μm spectral range becomes affected by thermal emission from the surface. This emission is overlapping with the 3 μm feature previously observed by VIRTIS during the pre-landing period making more difficult to retrieve the distribution of the organic material. A summary of the spectral characteristics observed on the south hemisphere region during the perihelion passage is given. Activity-driven spectral changes observed before and after perihelion passage on some specific areas of the surface are discussed.

Abstract

The Visible InfraRed Thermal Imaging Spectrometer, VIRTIS onboard ESA’s Rosetta mission has completed two extensive mapping campaigns of the 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko comet nucleus in August-September 2014. After calibration and geometrical projection on nucleus shape model, VIRTIS data were processed to retrieve the distribution of several spectral indicators (spectral slopes, organic material band depths) from which compositional maps are built. Apart from being appropriate to map surface composition, those indicators allow us to correlate them with local morphological features (patches, boulders, scarps, terraces, active areas) and thermal properties.

Abstract

Background: Humans are exposed to thousands of man-made chemicals in the environment. Some chemicals mimic natural endocrine hormones and, thus, have the potential to be endocrine disruptors. Most of these chemicals have never been tested for their ability to interact with the estrogen receptor (ER). Risk assessors need tools to prioritize chemicals for evaluation in costly in vivo tests, for instance, within the U.S. EPA Endocrine Disruptor Screening Program. oBjectives: We describe a large-scale modeling project called CERAPP (Collaborative Estrogen Receptor Activity Prediction Project) and demonstrate the efficacy of using predictive computational models trained on high-throughput screening data to evaluate thousands of chemicals for ER-related activity and prioritize them for further testing. Methods: CERAPP combined multiple models developed in collaboration with 17 groups in the United States and Europe to predict ER activity of a common set of 32,464 chemical structures. Quantitative structure-activity relationship models and docking approaches were employed, mostly using a common training set of 1,677 chemical structures provided by the U.S. EPA, to build a total of 40 categorical and 8 continuous models for binding, agonist, and antagonist ER activity. All predictions were evaluated on a set of 7,522 chemicals curated from the literature. To overcome the limitations of single models, a consensus was built by weighting models on scores based on their evaluated accuracies. results: Individual model scores ranged from 0.69 to 0.85, showing high prediction reliabilities. Out of the 32,464 chemicals, the consensus model predicted 4,001 chemicals (12.3%) as high priority actives and 6,742 potential actives (20.8%) to be considered for further testing. conclusion: This project demonstrated the possibility to screen large libraries of chemicals using a consensus of different in silico approaches. 41. Recent developments in polyimide and bismaleimide adhesives

Abstract

Research on high temperature resin systems has intensified. In the Aerospace Industry, the motivation for this increased activity has been to replace heat resistant alloys of aluminum, stainless steel and titanium by lighter weight glass and carbon fiber reinforced composites. Applications for these structures include: (1) engine nacelles involving long time exposure (thousands of hours) to temperatures in the 150 to 300 C range, (2) supersonic military aircraft involving moderately long exposure (hundreds of hours) to temperatures of 150 to 200 C, and (3) missile applications involving only brief exposure (seconds or minutes) to temperatures up to 500 C and above. Because of fatigue considerations, whenever possible, it is preferable to bond rather than mechanically fasten composite structures. For this reason, the increased usage of high temperature resin matrix systems for composites has necessitated the devlopment of compatible and equally heat stable adhesive systems. The performance of high temperature epoxy, epoxy phenolic and condensation polyimide adhesives is reviewed. This is followed by a discussion of three recently developed types of adhesives: (1) condensation reaction polyimides having improved processing characteristics; (2) addition reaction polyimides; and (3) bismaleimides.
