By using 2-photon 4-qubit cluster states we demonstrate deterministic one-way quantum computation in single qubit rotation algorithm. In this operation feed-forward measurements are automatically implemented by properly choosing the measurement basis of the qubits, while Pauli error corrections are realized by using two fast driven Pockels cells. We realized also a C-NOT gate for equatorial qubits and a C-Phase gate for a generic target qubit. Light–electron interaction is the seminal ingredient in free-electron lasers and dynamical investigation of matter. Pushing the coherent control of electrons by light to the attosecond timescale and below would enable unprecedented applications in quantum circuits and exploration of electronic motions and nuclear phenomena. Here we demonstrate attosecond coherent manipulation of a free-electron wave function, and show that it can be pushed down to the zeptosecond regime. We make a relativistic single-electron wavepacket interact in free-space with a semi-infinite light field generated by two light pulses reflected from a mirror and delayed by fractions of the optical cycle. The amplitude and phase of the resulting electron–state coherent oscillations are mapped in energy-momentum space via momentum-resolved ultrafast electron spectroscopy. The experimental results are in full agreement with our analytical theory, which predicts access to the zeptosecond timescale by adopting semi-infinite X-ray pulses., Manipulation of the electron–photon coupling is crucial for quantum circuits and exploration of electronic motions and nuclear phenomena. Femtosecond broadband photoluminescence studies are presented for Ir(ppy)3 (Ir1), Ir(ppy)2(pic) (Ir2), Ir(ppy)2(bpy)(PF6) (Ir3), Ir(ppz)3 (Ir4), and Ir(ppz)2dipy (Ir5) (where ppy = 2-phenylpyridine, pic = picolinate, bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine, ppz = 1-phenylpyrazole, and dipy = 5-phenyldipyrrinato) in solution. Upon 400-nm excitation of Ir1–Ir3, we observed a prompt population of the lowest MLCT states. The higher states decay on an ultrafast time scale (3MLCT state undergoes further vibrational relaxation on a 1-ps time scale. In Ir3, this relaxation is accompanied by an interligand decay from the ppy to the bpy ligand in ∼1.5 ps. For the ppy-containing complexes (Ir1 and Ir2), we found that, at 100 ps, the luminescence is red-shifted with respect to the steady-state emission. This is explained in terms of a time-delayed dual luminescence, which we attribute to a double-well minimum configuration of the lowest emitting triplet states involving the ppy moiety. Ir4 shows a prompt population of the lowest excited state, which then undergoes vibrational relaxation in ∼0.5 ps. Finally, at short times, Ir5 exhibits fluorescence from the lowest 1LC state, which decays in ∼100 fs to the manifold of 3LC states. Overall, this study shows that, although the ultrafast relaxation to the lowest electronic states is quite similar to that of other transition-metal complexes, most of the differences occur at the lowest emissive states, with effects such as time-delayed dual fluorescence, interligand decay, and nonradiative relaxation to the ground or lower-lying metal-centered states. Understanding these effects is crucial for obtaining optimal performances of iridium complexes, calling for further iterations between chemical synthesis and photophysical studies to optimize these complexes.

Vortex-carrying matter waves, such as chiral electron beams, are of significant interest in both applied and fundamental science. Continuous wave electron vortex beams are commonly prepared via passive phase masks imprinting a transverse phase modulation on the electron's wave function. Here, we show that femtosecond chiral plasmonic near fields enable the generation and dynamic control on the ultrafast timescale of an electron vortex beam. The vortex structure of the resulting electron wavepacket is probed in both real and reciprocal space using ultrafast transmission electron microscopy. This method offers a high degree of scalability to small length scales and a highly efficient manipulation of the electron vorticity with attosecond precision. Besides the direct implications in the investigation of nanoscale ultrafast processes in which chirality plays a major role, we further discuss the perspectives of using this technique to shape the wave function of charged composite particles, such as protons, and how it can be used to probe their internal structure., 14 pages, 4 figures

Holography relies on the interference between a known reference and a signal of interest to reconstruct both the amplitude and the phase of that signal. With electrons, the extension of holography to the ultrafast time domain remains a challenge, although it would yield the highest possible combined spatiotemporal resolution. Here, we show that holograms of local electromagnetic fields can be obtained with combined attosecond/nanometer resolution in an ultrafast transmission electron microscope (UEM). Unlike conventional holography, where signal and reference are spatially separated and then recombined to interfere, our method relies on electromagnetic fields to split an electron wave function in a quantum coherent superposition of different energy states. In the image plane, spatial modulation of the electron energy distribution reflects the phase relation between reference and signal fields. The electronic, optical, and magnetic properties of quantum solids are determined by their low-energy (< 100 meV) many-body excitations. Dynamical characterization and manipulation of such excitations relies on tools that combine nm-spatial, fs-temporal, and meV-spectral resolution. Currently, phonons and collective plasmon resonances can be imaged in nanostructures with sub-nm and 10s meV space/energy resolution using state-of-the-art energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy (TEM), but only under static conditions, while fs-resolved measurements are common but lack spatial or energy resolution. Here, we demonstrate a new method of spectrally resolved photon-induced near-field electron microscopy (SRPINEM) that allows us to obtain nm-fs-resolved maps of nanoparticle plasmons with an energy resolution determined by the laser linewidth (20 meV in this work), and not limited by electron beam and spectrometer energy spreading. This technique can be extended to any optically-accessible low-energy mode, thus pushing TEM to a previously inaccessible spectral domain with an unprecedented combination of space, energy and temporal resolution., 19 pages, 7 figures

We present developments in the technique of photo-induced near-field electron microscopy. (PINEM) We image the electron interaction with a far-field plane wave reflected from a mirror, and with the near-field resonance of a plasmonic nanowire.

Using femtosecond-resolved photoluminescence up-conversion, we report the observation of the fluorescence of the high-lying ligand-centered (LC) electronic state upon 266 nm excitation of an iridium complex, Ir(ppy)(3), with a lifetime of 70 +/- 10 fs. It is accompanied by a simultaneous emission of all lower-lying electronic states, except the lowest triplet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer ((MLCT)-M-3) state that shows a rise on the same time scale. Thus, we observe the departure, the intermediate steps, and the arrival of the relaxation cascade spanning similar to 1.6 eV from the (LC)-L-1 state to the lowest 3MLCT state, which then yields the long-lived luminescence of the molecule. We demonstrate that light-induced heat pulses of different duration and energy can write skyrmions in a broad range of temperatures and magnetic field in FeGe. Using a combination of camera-rate and pump-probe cryo-Lorentz Transmission Electron Microscopy, we directly resolve the spatio-temporal evolution of the magnetization ensuing optical excitation. The skyrmion lattice was found to maintain its structural properties during the laser-induced demagnetization, and its recovery to the initial state happened in the sub-{\mu}s to {\mu}s range, depending on the cooling rate of the system.
