11. Low social contact among UK working parents

Abstract

According to the Poverty and Social Exclusion survey 2012, a sizeable minority of UK working parents identify lack of time due to paid work and childcare responsibilities and lack of resources as obstacles to achieving desired levels of social contact with friends and relatives. Drawing on a wide range of theories and evidence, this thesis explores these findings by carrying out in-depth quantitative analysis on the large body of information about parents' social contact, work patterns, time and economic resources, material and social deprivation contained in three large UK surveys. The findings from this thesis provide a strong rationale for focusing on parents' social contact with their personal communities (Pahl and Spencer, 2006) by showing that low levels of social contact with these are associated with reduced levels of social support; a crucial asset to maintaining psychological and physical wellbeing during stressful times. This thesis also finds that the busy schedules and tight budgets of some working parents can affect their social interactions, particularly with friends. Specifically, it shows that working fathers and mothers generally experience high levels of time scarcity because of paid and unpaid work and that this increases their likelihood of having low social contact with friends. In line with much of the social network literature, it also finds that despite their double shifts mothers generally manage to maintain higher levels of social contact with friends than fathers do. Finally, confirming some of the exploratory findings from the social exclusion literature (Millar, 2007), it shows that the relationship between poverty and social contact is complex, and uses theories articulated by Townsend (1978) and Walker (2014) to explain the low levels of social contact experienced by a sizeable minority of working parents just above the poverty line.

21. Assessing Progress towards SDG2: Trends and Patterns of Multiple Malnutrition in Young Children under 5 in West and Central Africa

Abstract

The co-occurrence of different forms of malnutrition in young children is known to carry differential risks of morbity and mortality. Despite this, there are few, if any, systematic analyses of the prevalence of multiple anthropometric failures (or deficits) in young children under 5. This paper presents the results of the first such an analysis done on data from one of the poorest geographic regions of the world – West and Central Africa. Using data from the demographic and health surveys (DHS) and UNICEF’s Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS), the paper details the prevalence and patterning of child malnutrition using a combination of conventional measures and the Composite Index of Anthropometric Failure (CIAF) for the period 1990–2015. It shows the advantages of the CIAF indicator for gauging the full extent of malnutrition and the ability of an indicator of ‘Multiple Malnutrition’ to identify children under 5 with higher risk of mortality. It also shows how relatively little progress has been made in reducing the extent of malnutrition and emphasises the importance of tracking progress by looking at both rates and total number of affected children. Malnutrition across the region remains strongly associated with household wealth and education. Poorer, rural households are much more likely to experience malnutition, but the widespread prevalence of poor living conditions in urban areas has the potential to undermine any gains made in reducing malnutrition.

Living standards in the United Kingdom are typically measured using income as a proxy. Past research into living standards focuses on how living standards have changed over time, the extent to which there are in inequalities in living standards for different groups, and the impact of the recession on living standards. To date, little research combines economic and non-economic indicators to inform living standards.\ud Multidimensional indicators of living standards (MILS) that go beyond disposable (net) income and expenditure or consumption as a proxy are able to capture a fuller picture of living standards and better inform policy making and research.

Abstract

A partir de l’Enquête Modulaire Intégrée sur les Conditions de Vie des Ménages (EMICoV) conduite en complément à l’Enquête Démographique et de Santé (EDSB III) de 2006, cet article présente la première étude de la pauvreté multidimensionnelle utilisant l'approche consensuelle de mesure de la pauvreté au Bénin. En nous appuyant sur les travaux inspirés de Townsend et de son concept de la privation relative, nous montrons comment une approche sociale peut constituer la base d'un indice de privation à la fois valide et fiable, qui peut être utilisé afin de refléter la pauvreté multidimensionnelle. L'article aborde également la question des préférences adaptatives, une théorie souvent invoquée pour critiquer l'approche consensuelle. Nous montrons que l'idée selon laquelle les plus pauvres tendraient à sous-estimer leurs besoins ne se vérifie pas à partir des données pour le Bénin.

Abstract

In 2005, the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) was commissioned\ud to evaluate the potential value of using an aptitude test (the SAT Reasoning TestTM) as\ud an additional tool in the selection of candidates for admission to higher education (HE).\ud This five-year study was co-funded by the Department for Business, Innovation, and\ud Skills (BIS), the NFER, the Sutton Trust and the College Board. This report presents\ud findings from the final phase of the project, relating the prior attainment and SAT®\ud scores of participating students who graduated in 2006 to their degree outcomes. It also\ud summarises findings from the study as a whole, and cross references where\ud appropriate to the various interim reports.

Abstract

This study explores the barriers and constraints young people currently face when deciding what to do at the end of their compulsory schooling in Year 11. The study conducted by the NFER, working in partnership with Triangle and QA Research, included a survey of 2029 young people who completed Year 11 in either 2008 or 2009 conducted between August and October 2009. This survey was supplemented by interviews with booster samples of 519 young people across specific sub-groups and 102 parent interviews.
