3. Eliot as Satirist

Abstract

T.S. Eliot is seldom considered a satirist, even though satirical elements have long been perceived in his early poetry, most notably by Hugh Kenner and W.B. Yeats. Building on the scholarship from the last two decades which explores Eliot's relationship with popular culture, as well as the recently published letters from Eliot's early life and the drafts of The Waste Land, this dissertation argues that Eliot's earliest impetus was towards satire, and that his early career was a development, and finally an abandonment, of this mode. The first section surveys Eliot's earliest satirical poetry from Inventions of the March Hare to the controversial 'King Bolo' verses, contending that Eliot's initial satirical project was to provoke the particularly American puritanical culture that he grew up in. The second chapter explores Eliot's development of this satirical impetus as it relates to Poems 1920, particularly as it manifests in Eliot's defences of Wyndham Lewis, Ben Jonson, and Francis Cornford's theory of ancient 'tragi-comedy'. The concluding chapter deals with The Waste Land, firstly with the earliest reviews that correctly perceive Eliot's satirical tone in the poem, and then with Ezra Pound's edits, contending that the pair's differing opinions on the nature and purpose of satire motivated this editorial process and Eliot's eventual abandonment of the form.

Abstract

Coral reefs are effective natural flood barriers that protect adjacent coastal communities. As the need to adapt to rising sea levels, storms, and environmental changes increases, reef restoration may be one of the best tools available to mitigate coastal flooding along tropical coastlines, now and in the future. Reefs act as a barrier to incoming short-wave energy but can amplify low-frequency infragravity waves that, in turn, drive coastal flooding along low-lying tropical coastlines. Here, we investigate whether the spacing of reef restoration elements can be optimized to maximize infragravity wave energy dissipation while minimizing the number of elements—a key factor in the cost of a restoration project. With this goal, we model the hydrodynamics of infragravity wave dissipation over a coral restoration or artificial reef, represented by a canopy of idealized hemispherical roughness elements, using a three-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations solver (OpenFOAM). The results demonstrate that denser canopies of restoration elements produce greater wave dissipation under larger waves with longer periods. Wave dissipation is also frequency-dependent: dense canopies remove wave energy at the predominant wave frequency, whereas sparse canopies remove energy at higher frequencies, and hence are less efficient. We also identify an inflection point in the canopy density–energy dissipation curve that balances optimal energy losses with a minimum number of canopy elements. Through this work, we show that there are an ideal number of restoration elements per across-shore meter of coral reef flat that can be installed to dissipate infragravity wave energy for given incident heights and periods. Abstract

The growth in the number of recreational boaters has required the expansion of recreational boating facilities to ease congestion, increase throughput, and provide an improved user experience. Here we describe a novel use of discrete event simulation to model open network queues at recreational boating facilities. Behaviours associated with boat launching and retrieving were modelled in Python and used statistical distributions to describe arrivals, departures, and operations within a recreational boating facility. The model was recently applied to simulate an extreme changeover scenario at the Altona Safe Boat Harbour in Seaholme, Victoria. The simulated queue lengths for the existing facility were found to be consistent with anecdotal evidence provided by local stakeholders. The model was subsequently used to inform the concept design of an upgraded facility with the aim of reducing congestion. The number of parking spaces and boat ramp lanes were optimised to achieve a reduced wait time, whereas the simulated queue length was used to inform the provision of additional holding berths and landside queuing space. The results suggest that desirable wait times and queue lengths at an expanded recreational boating facility can be achieved by carefully balancing throughput (i.e., number of boat ramp lanes) and capacity (i.e., number of parking spaces). Abstract

If coral reefs continue to degrade, waves on coastlines may substantially increase, leading to greater coastal erosion., Coral reefs are diverse ecosystems that support millions of people worldwide by providing coastal protection from waves. Climate change and human impacts are leading to degraded coral reefs and to rising sea levels, posing concerns for the protection of tropical coastal regions in the near future. We use a wave dissipation model calibrated with empirical wave data to calculate the future increase of back-reef wave height. We show that, in the near future, the structural complexity of coral reefs is more important than sea-level rise in determining the coastal protection provided by coral reefs from average waves. We also show that a significant increase in average wave heights could occur at present sea level if there is sustained degradation of benthic structural complexity. Our results highlight that maintaining the structural complexity of coral reefs is key to ensure coastal protection on tropical coastlines in the future.

Abstract

The patterns and rates of sediment transport across coral reefs influence numerous ecological and morphological processes, yet these dynamics still remain poorly understood. We investigated rates of sediment transport across a 1:15 scale laboratory model with a 1:5 forereef slope, a fixed reef flat and a movable bed (sand) lagoon and beach. Four seven-hour irregular wave simulations were conducted with and without roughness elements on the forereef and reef flat, and with low and high mean water levels. Hydrodynamic processes were analyzed from 18 surface elevation and 8 velocity measurement stations. Suspended sediment concentration across the reef flat was measured continuously at five locations with fast response optical sensors that were periodically supplemented with direct pump sampling. Within the reef system, low frequency wave motions (both infragravity and very low frequency motions) were comparable and sometimes greater than short period motions that defined the incident wave band. Analysis of the sediment concentration signals and decomposition of velocity moments indicate that lower frequency motions play an increasing role across the reef flat and lagoon in driving sediment suspension and transport.
