9. A mouse model of uterine exposure to long-term hyperglycemia and a high-fat diet*

Abstract

A growing body of literature has shown that type 1 diabetes (T1D) and high-fat diet (HFD) affect female reproductive function and may be involved in a chronic inflammatory state. Our previous studies indicated that T1D as well as HFD may evoke perturbations in the receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) signaling pathway. The aim of the study was to determine the amount of RAGE protein and its proinflammatory ligands in uterine tissues harvested from T1D and HFD/pre-diabetic mice (n = 5 per group). We sought the impact of T1D and HFD on the activity of the RAGE signaling pathway in uterine tissues during the estrous cycle. The abundance of RAGE and its ligands were estimated using immunohistochemical staining. However, we also performed nerve conduction velocity studies to confirm diabetic neuropathy. The highest amount of RAGE and its ligands were observed in uterine tissues of T1D mice. Moreover, myometrial activity of the RAGE signaling pathway was increased in HFD in comparison to the control group (P≤0.05). We observed a strong relationship between RAGE, Nε-(carboxymethyl)lysine (CML) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) proteins in mice myometrium. These data suggest that T1D and HFD could modulate the activity of RAGE and thus RAGE signaling pathway in uterine tissues during estrous cycle. Long-term diabetes and HFD may induce malfunctions in the uterine milieu. In the future RAGE protein may serve as a molecular marker in the diagnosis of malfunctions in pre- and diabetic uterus milieu.

11. A comparison of the nutritional value, technological and sensory properties of pork loin and ham and their changes during freezer storage.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to compare the nutritional value, technological and sensory properties of pork loin and ham, and their changes during freezer storage. After slaughter and post-slaughter processing in the Warmia Meat Processing Plant in Biskupiec, carcasses were chilled at a temperature of 2-4°C for 24 h. Samples of loin (longissimus dorsi muscle, LD) and ham (semimembranosus muscle, SM) were collected from right half-carcasses. Loin and ham samples were divided into three portions. The first portion (fresh meat) was analyzed immediately, and the second and third portions were frozen and stored at a temperature of -18°C for one month and three months, respectively. Samples of fresh and stored meat were analyzed to determine their chemical composition, active acidity, water-holding capacity (WHC), emulsifying capacity, and color (CIE L*, a*, b* color space). The values of chroma (C*) and hue angle (h°) were calculated based on the values of color parameters a* and b*. Steam-cooked samples were analyzed to determine cooking loss and sensory attributes. The content of dry matter (DM) and fat was higher, and the protein concentration was lower in ham than in loin. The chemical composition of loin and ham, in particular DM content, was also affected by freezer storage. The pH values of both muscles were comparable, which points to the high quality of the analyzed meat, and they decreased in both loin and ham during freezer storage. Changes in active acidity observed in frozen loin and ham were reflected in the functional properties of meat. The emulsifying capacity increased and the WHC decreased, which resulted in greater cooking loss. An analysis of fresh meat samples revealed that loin was characterized by lower WHC and higher cooking loss than ham. Ham was darker in color than loin, and color lightness decreased in both loin and ham with prolonged freezer storage. The storage of frozen meat had a positive influence on its sensory attributes. Meat samples stored in a freezer for three months received the highest scores in the sensory analysis, and loin scored somewhat higher than ham. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We discuss the design and performance of a threshold Cerenkov counter for identification of charged hadrons. The radiator is pressurized gas, which is contained in thin-walled cylindrical modules. A mirror system of novel design transports Cerenkov photons to photomultiplier tubes. This system is compact, contains relatively little material, and has a large fraction of active volume. A prototype of a module designed for the proposed CLEO III detector has been studied using cosmic rays. Results from these studies show good agreement with a detailed Monte Carlo simulation of the module and indicate that it should achieve separation of pions and kaons at the 2.5-3.0sigma level in the momentum range 0.8-2.8 GeV/c. Abstract

The CLEO II detector at the e+e− storage ring CESR has been used to search for two-photon production of the fJ(2220) decaying into π+π−. No evidence for a signal is found in 4.77fb−1 of data and a 95% C.L. upper limit on [τγγBπ+π−]fJ(2220) of 2.5 eV is set. If this result is combined with the BES Collaboration's measurement of fJ(2220)→π+π− in radiative J/Ψ decay and the recent CLEO result for [τγγBK0SK0S]fJ(2220), a 95% C.L. lower limit on the stickiness of 102 is obtained. This result for the stickiness provides further support for a substantial neutral parton content in the fJ(2220). © 1998 The American Physical Society.

In many areas, there is an increasing use of technology, not with the use of personal computers, even in the form of laptops, but with smartphones. The increasing technological possibilities of these devices, faster and faster communication and, what is important, the affordability of devices and services for the majority of society have made them one of the practically indispensable accessories of every human being. The aim of the article is to verify how significantly mobile payment technologies influenced consumer behavior in the area related to meeting transport needs on the example of a selected city by purchasing public transport tickets or parking fees. 33. Observation of the radiative decay D*+-> D+gamma

Abstract

We have observed a signal for the decay D*+ → D+ γ at a significance of 4 standard deviations. From the measured branching ratio B(D*+ → D+ γ)/B(D*+ → D+ π0) = 0.055 ± 0.014 ± 0.010 we find B(D*+ → D+ γ) = 0.017 ± 0.004 ± 0.003, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. We also report the highest precision determination of the remaining D*+ branching fractions.

Abstract

We use the CLEO detector at the Cornell e+ e- storage ring, CESR, to search for the two-photon production of the glueball candidate fJ(2220) in its decay to KsKs. We present a restrictive upper limit on the product of the two-photon partial width and the KsKs branching fraction, (Γγγ BKsks)fJ(2220). We use this limit to calculate a lower limit on the stickiness, which is a measure of the two-gluon coupling relative to the two-photon coupling. This limit on stickiness indicates that the fJ(2220) has substantial glueball content.

Abstract

We have observed four fully reconstructed B0 → D*+D*- candidates in 5.8 × 106 Υ(4S) → BB̄ decays recorded with the CLEO detector. The background is estimated to be 0.31 ± 0.10 events. The probability that the background could produce four or more signal candidates with the observed distribution among D*+ and D*- decay modes is 1.1 × 10-4. The measured decay rate, B(B0 → D*+D*-) = [6.2-2.9+4.0(stat) ± 1.0(syst)] × 10-4, is large enough for this decay mode to be of interest for the measurement of a time-dependent CP asymmetry. © 1999 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

Using a sample of 3.3 × 106 B-meson decays collected with the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have studied B → D0ℓ ν̄ and B̄0 → D ℓ ν̄ decays, where ℓ can be either e- or μ-. We distinguish B → Dℓν from other B semileptonic decays by examining the net momentum and energy of the particles recoiling against D - ℓ pairs. We find Γ(B → Dℓν) = (14.1 ± 1.0 ± 1.2) ns-1 and derive branching fractions for B- → D0ℓ- ν̄ and B̄0 → D+ℓ- ν̄ of (2.32 ± 0.17 ± 0.20)% and (2.20 ± 0.16 ± 0.19)%, respectively, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic. We also investigate the B → Dℓν form factor and the implication of the result for |Vcb|. © 1999 The American Physical Society.

39. Arthroscopic Latarjet Stabilization: Analysis of the Learning Curve in the First 90 Primary Cases: Early Clinical Results and Computed Tomography Evaluation.

Abstract

Purpose: To assess the learning curve of arthroscopic Latarjet, evaluating time of surgery, clinical outcomes, complications, revisions, and recurrence.Methods: Arthroscopic Latarjet procedures performed from 2011 to 2016 were reviewed. Satisfaction rate, subjective shoulder value, Walch-Duplay, Rowe scores, range of motion, and stability were evaluated on clinical examination. Graft position and fusion were analyzed using computed tomography. All patients were divided into 3 chronological groups.Results: Ninety patients (3 groups of 30) were available for clinical evaluation (96,8%). The mean follow-up was 23.7 months. Surgical time was significantly (P = .0028) longer in group I (mean 128 minutes, standard deviation [SD] 33.6) when compared with groups II (mean 102 minutes, SD 16.2) and III (mean 108 minutes, SD 21.8). A regression analysis and cumulative sum learning curve analysis showed the surgeon oscillated around mean operative time (112.7 minutes; SD 27.2) after 30 procedures. The number of intraoperative complications was significantly greater (P = .024) in Group I (5 cases; 17%) compared with zero in group II, and 3 (10%) in group III. All 3 cases (3.3%) of recurrence were reported in group I (P = .033). Significantly, 2 of 3 patients with recurrence had intraoperative graft complications (P = .0107). Overall patient satisfaction was evaluated as 92%, SSV 90%, Walch-Duplay and Rowe scores, respectively, 79 and 81 points. Nine revisions (10%) were reported. No significant differences were found between the results and revisions of the 3 chronological groups.Conclusions: This study confirms that the arthroscopic Latarjet procedure provides good clinical and radiologic results at short-term follow-up. The surgical time, frequency of complications, and number of hardware problems significantly decreased after the first 30 cases. As such, surgeons should be aware of the elevated potential for complications and recurrence early in the learning curve-serious intraoperative complications are important risk factors for recurrence.Level Of Evidence: III. 40. Development of energy renovation packages for the Danish residential sector.

Abstract

Abstract The work presented in this paper is developed as a part of the Horizon 2020 EU project REFURB. The number of deep energy retrofits is falling behind the EU ambitious targets. The REFURB project aims at finding technical and nontechnical solutions that match the demand and supply side of the residential building renovation market. Due to the multiple significant differences at the national level, compelling offers are developed specifically for each country participant. This paper elaborates only on the Danish approach. The Danish approach to create compelling offers for pre-selected homeowner target groups is based on (I) selection of dwelling segment with high impact and energy saving potential, (II) sequenced approach in creating renovation package solutions, (III) compelling offer to be proposed with specific timing. This paper focuses mainly on the second listed component, namely, development of the renovation package solutions. The paper only briefly highlights the selection of dwelling segment and does not present the creation of compelling offer due to the length of the paper. Initially, developed renovation packages are optimized purely focusing on the least-cost optimal, theoretical, energy savings. As a result, very rational packages were developed that were not met with acceptance from the building sector stakeholders. After several surveys and meetings with renovation market stakeholders such as building owners, energy renovation contractors, financial institutions, and energy consultants, the initial renovation packages were redefined in order to take account for factors such as securing investment in the renovated real estate, comfort, architectural aesthetic, and "low hanging fruit" energy saving solutions. Finally, ten different customized renovation packages were developed ranging between up to 7.500 and 62.000 € and bringing theoretical primary energy savings between 30 and up to 80%. 43. Comparison of salt solution and air drying methods for moisture fixation in highly porous building materials.

Abstract

In recent years, research has identified some bio-based, porous building materials as good or excellent regulators of moisture in buildings. The ability of a material to absorb, release and store moisture is described by vapour sorption isotherms. It is necessary input to simulations of indoor environmental parameters in regards to human comfort, and nowadays it can be determined by a number of laboratory experiments, each of which characterized by specific specimen size, equilibration time and methodology. The purpose of this study is to experimentally derive isotherms for three bio-based, porous building materials by a standardized testing method, using saturated salt solutions. Furthermore, results from the standard method are compared to values of moisture content for the same materials, obtained by air-drying at different relative humidity. This is done with the aim to compare the findings from the two methods with respect to time and repeatability of the results. Derived isotherms are further used as direct input in the building simulation software BSim, which is capable of predicting indoor environment parameters by solving coupled, transient heat and moisture transport equations using finite volume method discretization. Indoor air relative humidity and moisture content distribution in the construction are compared for the experimented materials and conventional building materials. Results show better agreement between isotherms obtained by standard method and air-drying for low density materials. Simulation results suggest that bio-based, highly porous building materials are comparable to conventional building materials in respect to air relative humidity variations, compared to conventional building materials. 44. New calculation method to solve moisture balance in the room with regenerator heat recovery and infiltration.

Abstract

This paper investigates moisture related performance of a regenerator heat exchanger located in a decentralized ventilation unit for residential building application. The decentralized ventilation solutions have recently become a more and more popular alternative to centralized ventilation systems. Due to the small space available and in order to avoid maintenance of these types of units, they are equipped with regenerator heat exchanger in some cases. In the recent past and also presently, Building Regulations (BR) and European directives have increased demands for heat recovery efficiency in air handling units (AHUs). In the case of regenerator heat exchanger, the higher the heat recovery efficiency obtained the higher risk that condensation might occur. This condensation might form small droplets on the surface of the regenerator that might not be possible to drain in the short switching time of the regenerator and consequently might be evaporated in the next cycle back to the building and cause elevated humidity conditions in the indoor spaces. Due to the fact that the traditionally used dilution equation must not be used to solve moisture balance in the room with regenerator heat exchanger and infiltration, this paper presents a new calculation methodology that takes into account infiltration, condensation in the regenerator, and back evaporation to the room. The paper compares humidity levels in the room ventilated with regenerator heat exchanger and ordinary counter-flow exchanger. Theoretical calculations indicate that the ability of a ventilation system with regenerator to remove moisture from the room is very dependent on moisture loads in the room, air change rate, and infiltration rate. Abstract

Based on a high statistics e+e-→cc̄ data sample, we report on the inclusive rate for charmed baryons to decay into Λ particles using charm-event tagging. We select e+e-→cc̄ events which have a clear anti-charm tag and measure the Λ content in the hemisphere opposite the tag (charge conjugate modes are implicit). This allows us to determine the product branching fraction BΛ=B(c→ΘcX)XB(Θ c→ΛX), where Θc represents a sum over all charmed baryons produced in e+e- fragmentation at √s=10.5 GeV, given our specific tags. We obtain BΛ=(1.87±0.03±0.33)%. ©2000 The American Physical Society.
