Abstract

The influence of the site of cancer on outcome in cancer women with venous thromboembolism (VTE) is poorly understood. Reliable information on its influence might facilitate better use of prevention strategies. We assessed the 30-day outcome in all women with active cancer in the RIETE Registry, trying to identify if differences exist according to the tumor site. Up to May 2010, 2474 women with cancer and acute VTE had been enrolled. The most common sites were the breast (26%), colon (13%), uterus (9.3%), and haematologic (8.6%) cancers. During the 30-day study period, 329 (13%) patients died. Of them, 71 (2.9%) died of pulmonary embolism (PE), 22 (0.9%) died of bleeding. Fatal PE was more common in women with breast, colorectal, lung or pancreatic cancer (59% of the fatal PEs). Fatal bleeding was more frequent in women with colorectal, haematologic, ovarian cancer or carcinoma of unknown origin (55% of fatal bleedings).

Abstract

Fecal samples and small intestinal content obtained by Enterotest were submitted between December 1994 and January 1996, by HIV (+) patients with gastrointestinal symptoms.Unconcentrated and concentrated fecal samples (by Sheater, Ritchie and Spontaneous Sedimentation) and intestinal content obtained by Enterotest, all stained by modificated Ziehl-Nielsen method, were compared (multiatributive comparison) based on the following parameters: yield, each test cost, morphology and the number of parasites per slide, in order to diagnose Cryptosporidium spp. e Isospora belli.Intestinal content obtained by Enterotest on the diagnosis of Cryptosporidium spp. e Isospora belli was not better than the fecal samples but it is more expensive. However, it reached a good diagnostic yield with adequate morphology, and a number of parasites per slide. Furthermore, it can be used as a second line diagnostic method (first line = fecal samples) and as an alternative in places where the use of endoscopy is not available.

Abstract

A critical review to the methods recommended by international bodies and widely used in the winery industry and research studies was performed. A Laccase biosensor was applied to the selective determination of polyphenols in wines. The biosensor response was characterised and it responds mainly to o-diphenols which are the principal polyphenols responsible for the stability and sensory qualities of wines. The spectrophotometric method to determine free and total sulphur dioxide recommended for beers was applied directly to wines. A sampling of 14 red and white wines was performed and they were analysed for biosensor polyphenol index (IBP) and sulphur dioxide concentration (SO2). The antioxidant capacity by the ABTS(+) spectrophotometric method was also determined. A correlation study was performed to elucidate the influence of the polyphenols and SO2 on the wines stability. High correlations were found between IBP and antioxidant capacity and low correlation between SO2 and antioxidant capacity. 24. Brain training with non-action video games enhances aspects of cognition in older adults: a randomized controlled trial.

Abstract

Age-related cognitive and brain declines can result in functional deterioration in many cognitive domains, dependency, and dementia. A major goal of aging research is to investigate methods that help to maintain brain health, cognition, independent living and wellbeing in older adults. This randomized controlled study investigated the effects of 20 1-h non-action video game training sessions with games selected from a commercially available package (Lumosity) on a series of age-declined cognitive functions and subjective wellbeing. Two groups of healthy older adults participated in the study, the experimental group who received the training and the control group who attended three meetings with the research team along the study. Groups were similar at baseline on demographics, vocabulary, global cognition, and depression status. All participants were assessed individually before and after the intervention, or a similar period of time, using neuropsychological tests and laboratory tasks to investigate possible transfer effects. The results showed significant improvements in the trained group, and no variation in the control group, in processing speed (choice reaction time), attention (reduction of distraction and increase of alertness), immediate and delayed visual recognition memory, as well as a trend to improve in Affection and Assertivity, two dimensions of the Wellbeing Scale. Visuospatial working memory (WM) and executive control (shifting strategy) did not improve. Overall, the current results support the idea that training healthy older adults with non-action video games will enhance some cognitive abilities but not others.

Abstract

Objective: The purpose of the present study was to determine the associations of cold pressor test (CPT) cardiovascular reactivity with gestational age at birth and neonatal size in normotensive pregnant women., Methods: Seventy (70) healthy pregnant women were enrolled. The CPT consisted of introducing the patients' hands in cold water (4 degrees C) for 3 min. An automatic oscillometric device was used to record blood pressure (BP) every minute for the following 5 min. Perinatal results were correlated with CPT findings., Results: Vascular reactivity assessed by CPT was higher in pregnant hypertensive women and in women with a hypertensive family history. Mean BP increases caused by CPT showed a significant negative correlation for gestational age (r = -0.58, p < 0.001) and cephalic perimeter (r = -0.57, p = 0.03). Diastolic BP increases caused by CPT were negatively correlated with newborn weight (r = -0.78, p < 0.001). Predictable newborn weight, gestational age, and cephalic perimeter were 4046 (47 x diastolic BP increase), 40.2 (0.07 x mean BP increase), and 35.8 (0.09 x mean BP increase), respectively., Conclusions: Results show that every mm Hg diastolic BP increase in response to CPT was correlated with a 47-g decrease in the newborn normal weight. Furthermore, every mean mm Hg BP increase in response to CPT was associated with a 0.07-week decrease in the newborn normal gestational age and a 0.09-cm decrease in the normal cephalic perimeter at birth.

Abstract

Fecal samples and small intestinal content obtained by Enterotest were submitted between December 1994 and January 1996, by HIV (+) patients with gastrointestinal symptoms.Unconcentrated and concentrated fecal samples (by Sheater, Ritchie and Spontaneous Sedimentation) and intestinal content obtained by Enterotest, all stained by modificated Ziehl-Nielsen method, were compared (multiatributive comparison) based on the following parameters: yield, each test cost, morphology and the number of parasites per slide, in order to diagnose Cryptosporidium spp. e Isospora belli.Intestinal content obtained by Enterotest on the diagnosis of Cryptosporidium spp. e Isospora belli was not better than the fecal samples but it is more expensive. However, it reached a good diagnostic yield with adequate morphology, and a number of parasites per slide. Furthermore, it can be used as a second line diagnostic method (first line = fecal samples) and as an alternative in places where the use of endoscopy is not available.

Abstract

Objective: To determine the clinical manifestations associated with resistant M. tuberculosis infection and the antimicrobial resistance in isolates from Mexican patients., Study Design: Epidemiological surveillance., Patients: Tuberculosis confirmed cases., Methods: Primary resistance: no history of treatment prior to diagnosis. The following critical concentrations (micrograms/mL) were used for susceptibility: isoniazid 0.2 and 1; rifampin 1 and 5; ethambutol 5 and 10; streptomycin 2 and 10; ethionamide 5; kanamycin 6; and para-aminosalicylic acid (PAS) 2 and 10., Results: Eighty-four patients with a mean age of 44.7 years were included; 54 men (64%) and 30 women (36%); most patients were from the Mexico City metropolitan area. In 34 patients there was clinical information available, 26 presented fever and weight loss and 8 respiratory symptoms. Fifty-nine patients (70%) were infected by pan-susceptible M. tuberculosis, and 25 (30%) by a resistant isolate; 17 (68%) of them were resistant to at least two drugs, 16 (64%) to isoniazid and rifampin. The proportion of resistance was: isoniazid 24%, rifampin 19%, streptomycin 12%, ethambutol 10%, PAS 9%, etionamide 7%, and kanamycin 6%. Of 47 patients without previous treatment, eight had a resistant microorganism (17%): 9% resistant to isoniazid, 6% to rifampin, 2% to streptomycin, 6% to PAS and 6% multiresistant. Of 37 patients with history of previous treatment for tuberculosis, 17 (46%) had a resistant isolate; 44% were resistant to isoniazid, 35% to rifampin, 24% to streptomycin, 19% to ethambutol, 12% to PAS and 35% multiresistant. Of the 84 patients, four were physicians infected by a resistant isolate, and seven HIV-infected patients, one with a multiresistant isolate, and another with isoniazid resistance., Conclusions: Antimicrobial resistance among M. tuberculosis is alarmingly high in Mexico City; these results emphasize the importance of case detection and early isolation of patients.
